Why Red Bull's F1 rivals were spared an even bigger defeat in Abu Dhabi | PODCAST

For one of only a handful of times in 2023, Red Bull looked vulnerable in practice for the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 season finale - yet Max Verstappen ended the weekend with one of his more dominant wins in recent memory.
How that transpired, and how the remaining battles in the constructors' championship were settled, are the main themes of this season's final grand prix review episode of The Race F1 Podcast.
Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Edd Straw to dissect another Max Verstappen triumph and how Red Bull turned things around, plus the battle for second overall behind it that came alive in the closing stages - including whether Mercedes' eventual 'triumph' in that fight over Ferrari will even matter to it.
Yuki Tsunoda's strong end to the campaign ultimately proved to be in vain as far as AlphaTauri's hopes of overhauling Williams for seventh in the points were concerned, but there's still a look at how he strung together his impressive weekend as well as what a best overall finish in six years means for Williams.
And, of course, for one final time in 2023 there's a host of questions from The Race Members' Club to work through - a number of which are asked with an eye on 2024.
00:00 Intro
02:30 - How Red Bull turned poor practice form around
05:50 - How Mercedes v Ferrari battle was decided

On Leclerc potentially holding George up at the end calling it unsportsmanlike behavior, the podcast talked about how Perez did it in 2021 with Hamilton (which he was praised for) AND don't forget that Lewis did it to Rosberg in 2016 when he was holding Nico up so that he can be potentially be passed so Lewis could win the championship

I am glad that you guys have in a way taken back some of the very harsh comments you had made a few podcasts ago about Yuki "costing the team P7". No doubt it was a big mistake by him but he has outperformed all his teammates (including Ricciardo) and I think he deserves more credit for his mostly consistent performance throughout the year. He is the last person that should be blamed, it was ultimately the team's fault for having such a poor car at the beginning of the season, and Daniel should also have been there to assist Yuki a bit more (granted he had a lot of bad luck as well).

When I saw that Alonso/Hamilton thing happen, it didn't look like a brake check to me. If you rewatch it, alonso was really focused on his mirrors and his car was actually veering off to the right. If he didn't look up, slow down, and correct his steering over to the left, his trajectory was off into the barriers. So to me it looked like he got too focused on his mirrors and then when he looked up to see the barrier coming at him, he did an "oh shit" moment and slightly over corrected. Thats what it looked like to me anyway.

The rag Norris keeps taking on Twitter is amazing. He’s not feeling pressure from Piastri (even though he’s like watching Jack Brabham reborn), Norris’ pressure has being trying to catch Verstappen, trouble is the limit of the McLaren hits about 0.05s earlier on a fast qualifier. Everytime Norris pushed that car over its limit, everyone’s said “dang, he should’ve had pole!” Well yeah, there’s a reason for that & its kinda obvious. He’s asking the MCL60 to go places it just won’t, he knows this, but if he never tried he’d always be left wondering. When it comes to the races the RB19 gets up to tire temp and its gone so qualifying is all McLaren can do to hurt em. Here’s hoping for more fight in 2024.

Regarding the length of the F1 schedule : Unlike NA sports leagues that get more events out of simply adding a team without impacting the workload of other franchises, F1 is stuck with a model that doesn't lend itself to expansion. Indeed, every single driver, mechanic and team member is expected to be present at every single event on the calendar. Adding events means they get to bear a harder workload. We're reaching the tipping point of that unsustainable expansion model. I believe sprint races were an easy enough antidote: adding races without increasing the logistical and workload burden significantly. Still, as much as we love to see more racing, I don't think sprint races have found their singular purpose yet; they still seem like an afterthought. If F1 wants to keep increasing its number of events, the every-hand-on-deck-every-weekend will have to give way, and they'll have to dilute their product. Perhaps we have 30 events per season, but no singular individual is allowed to partake in more than 20, also allowing for more drivers to get an eye in (and getting rid of the dodgy feeder teams model). Perhaps have the World Grand Slam (BRA, CAN, JAP, AUS) and European Cup (GBR, ITA, MON, BEL) races be worth twice the points to make sure every driver is present for marquee events. Perhaps force sprint races to be driven by a rookie driver and count towards the championship.

not sure it's fair to say Mercedes got ''stitched up'' with the 2021 rule change...before that season started it was speculated by many that the changes would actually suit Mercedes more. And who can forget the bullish statements by other low rake cars (before their sudden melt down a day after the first race). 2020 Mercedes was so far clear of the rest, not making a single change would absolutely guarantee another free title. The changes made didn't make a huge change in performance, but it's constantly used as an excuse.

I don’t think mercs dominance has affected their ability to develop a strong aero package, I think it’s them having relied on a budget of both redbull and Ferraris combined that’s let them down slightly. Still they’ve had overall the second best car throughout the year as the W14 has been the most stable throughout each weekend, while Aston, Ferrari, mclaren and alpine all have certain tracks where they have massive drop offs in pace or tyre wear, where as aside from Brazil which was due to a poor setup, merc was mostly always amongst the top 3 cars each and every weekend. Love albon, he’s a really great driver, although I think he’s slightly overrated. That Williams car is no where near as terrible as everyone (Williams included) seem to make out. It’s a simple car and more balanced from last season but still a force on the long straights. Pretty damn low on Sargent, don’t think he ever deserved to be on the grid, but even he managed some really great single lap paces. If they had a better #2 they would have easily finished 7th.

The mental gymnastics to excuse another one of Hamilton's abysmal performances. 1 "The car" Car was capable of scoring a podium and over the season the 2nd best car in the field. 2 "Nothing to gain for Hamilton" Second in the constructor championship was very much on the line, as if that is even necessary. Other drivers still gave it their all. Even those not running in the points. 3 "He had a brake issue because of his wing-end plate" What a stretch, but even then it is because of damage he caused himself! 4 "He was fighting till the last lap" Yeah and looked like a rookie well doing it But I guess we never criticize Hamilton. P9 in second best car with no mitigating circumstances. That's pretty awful.

6:14 On the contrary, I think this was judged exactly as it should always be judged. Most pieces of problematic stewarding stem from the logic of judging solely by the outcome and not by the action. If you cause a collision, it's highly likely that it will cost you some time anyway, this doesn't make it ok. In terms of upholding driving standards, it doesn't make sense to say that Perez's dive bomb should not be penalized because didn't manage to benefit at that moment. The consequences to the other driver were out of his control in that moment anyway. He should have been given a penalty and if he had managed to benefit from what he did, the penalty should have been higher to not make it worthwhile doing this. In a similar fashion, but judged incorrectly, Alonso allegedly brake checked Hamilton. As long as stewards agree that that's what happened, the question is why wasn't he punished? Because Hamilton braked, so they didn't crash? When it comes to dangerous driving, we don't care if the other driver avoided the collision, it's not even about who ended up in what position anymore. In short, the consequences should matter more regarding the severity of the penalty, not if any penalty should be given. So what if Perez's actions decided P2 in the championship? it's drivers and their teams that should have to deal with that, not the stewards.
@maverickstclare3756

Jesus Christ.... Here we go with the bad takes on what is a racing incident and what isn't again. Listen: A racing incident is an incident where there drivers more or less equally share the blame, or there are some mitigating circumstances in regards to the incident that excuses the driver who would be predominantly be to blame normally. None of that is present in the Perez/Norris crash. Perez: 1) Dove late for the overtake 2) Carried too much speed. 3) Understeered. 4) Missed the apex 5) Hit Lando. That Lando cut the track is 100% IRRELEVANT. Anything that happens after the crash is irrelevant to whether or not Perez deserved the penalty - and him cutting the track was Perez fault for barging into Lando. He's not entitled to get a position swap. And arguing that it shouldn't have been a penalty because it helped deciding the P2 in the championship... Are you guys even listening to yourself? This is embarrassing. 😑

@@nunocarmona 1) Max and George collided before the corner. Perez and Norris collided after the corner. 2) Max was alongside George for 2 seconds before George turned in. Perez did a very late lunge from behind. 3) Max didn't understeer and made the apex. Perez understeered and didn't make the apex. As such, Perez was not considered to be in control of his car. So in short, upon inspection, these two incidents are not similar at all.
@Athinira
@Athinira 7 месяцев назад
@@Lanse1984Yes it was. It was a textbook divebomb, and there's no mitigating circumstances to speak of. Perez made a late lunge, understeered, went wide, and as such wasn't in control of his car. But the overtaking rules, it's a slam dunk penalty. They state that overtakes must be done in a safe and controlled manner. Carrying too much speed into an inside overtake is not being in control of your car. Same reason Hamilton was penalized in the Spa Sprint versus Perez. While they collided a bit further after exiting the corner compared to this, the logic is the same: understeered into the other driver on an inside overtake by carrying too much speed.

@@user-wy5xe6ht2m Stop making assumptions….I have no hero in F1 racing….I just don’t find the racing or its participants of any interest….it was just as bad when (yes that’s right I don’t actually like him by the way ) Lewis Hamilton was winning everything. It’s not a great sport because they have allowed themselves too much emphasis on engineering excellence and patting themselves on the back for it, that they have lost sight of what it should be about - wheel to wheel racing. At least have the decency to get your facts right and not make childish assumptions before making a critical comment.
