What you had there was vine weevil grubs! The adult beetles crawl into the pots and lay their eggs. The grubs then eat away at the roots of the plants and destroy the plant if left unchecked! The plant will reroot if caught early enough and placed into fresh soil. You can water the soil with a vine weevil killer to prevent them from attacking the plant but this is only active for 4 months in the soil and you have to then repeat. They love to attack succulents I find and have to repot regularly and watch for signs of damage! Hope that is useful? 😊
Thank you 🙂 I was wondering though- how can you tell that the grub is a vine weevil larva and not another type of beetle such as African black beetle or a Japanese beetle. I've seen all three beetles around my potted plants before and found grubs that were almost the size of my thumb in larger pots. They seemed too big for weevils? I try not to use insecticides for grubs as i think they can be quite harmful to native insects such as bees, butterflies and moths. Thankfully they are not a massive problem in my plants so i just handpick them & repot 🐝🦋 But yeah, it is an option 🙂
