6:45 Anakin speaking about sand is definitely rough, but to be fair, in context he is an emotionally stunted man who probably has ptsd and his trauma is largely connected to sand, having him give a well reasoned and thought out argument about why he doesn't like sand would seem like worse writing and it being clunky and awkward makes sense to me
@Nousos
@Nousos Год назад
It's like how Lucas wanted luke to give that big, long, well thought out line about how "fear is their greatest defense". Mark finally convinced him that normal people don't talk like that, and it wouldve sounded stupid for a farmboy to say.
@TooSweet353
@TooSweet353 Год назад
Actually no, if he had a well defined reason for why he doesn't like sand, it would still be out of place but at least it'd allow for deeper insight into Anakin. Anakin coding why he doesn't like sand feels out of place, it doesn't really feel lovably awkward, just feels off-putting because Anakin has been a creep throughout this movie and literally brought up sand as a way to flirt with Padme and call her smooth. So bro is following up his talk about "deep emotional trauma" to call a woman smooth. I think it's best when you look at the situation as Anakin failing at flirting.
@sevach
@sevach 11 месяцев назад
The fact that it worked as a pickup line is weird, his distaste of sand is very understandable, he grew up on a sand planet, dealing with sandstorms... and he was a mechanic... sand is like poison for mechanical parts. Then he moved away from that crap and saw water, grass... all much more pleasing to contact than sand. There's a reason no one says go outside and touch some sand lol.

@@sevach it's not a pickup line. They were already friends and clearly interested. This is a bizarre snapshot of a conversation.

About knowing languages and Rey knowing the Wookie one - even if you learn one sort of well once, but then don't use it regularly for some years - you will forget most of it. I used to be somewhat fluent in both German and Swedish because they were taught in school here, at least to the extent that I understood both well enough to do something like being able to read a newspaper, or even get most of what was said in some television program in that language. But then I stopped trying to practice, no more reading or listening and no attempts to speak either one. I forgot both almost completely in way less than 10 years. At one period of my life I even forgot a lot of English when I didn't regularly read or write it for some years (I'm old - kids, guess what, once upon a time, before the internet existed, you didn't necessarily need this language daily unless you traveled a lot). Rey is young, so if she had at some moment managed to learn Wookie she might still retain some because it could not have been that long ago for her, but even if we assume that she is a natural prodigy with languages (too...) and was able to pick one up in only a few weeks or maybe a few months, then she'd forget even faster once she stopped using it.

I agree, I don't feel bad for her. She was stupid and nasty towards fans who called out the flaws of her character, even when many defended her performance. I am of the opinion that she is not a good actress either. She was unconvincing when it came to the physical demands of her stunts and fight choreography AND she can't emote to save her life. So many scenes I can't tell what emotion she was trying to convey with her facial expressions. I never got those that said she is a good actress or did a good job with the role. I think they fell for the emotional manipulation of the character (which they tried really hard to make her sympathetic) and people accidently extended that sympathy to the actress. Fortunately for me, I have little sympathy; especially for entitled dumb actors.

I think one angle to look at is why does Anakin origin repeating similar beats to Luke makes sense but Rey's origin feels like pale copy that was forced since Abrams was remaking a new hope instead of a new story. On paper, she sounds like an interesting character who is then destroyed by being force to be a clone of Luke. Lucas when writing the Prequels wanted to setup parallels between Luke and Anakin showing how they were alike and different when it came to the decision to embrace the dark side.
@DarkHourYT

For one thing, historically, family members are often from the same planet. Rey has no relation to the Skywalker boys so while much of it is coincidental it is not surprising that Luke and his own father have similar upbringings where Rey just miraculously has a similar upbringing on a completely different planet and apparently without any parental figures. Additionally, the prequels are not without criticism. If George Lucas was creatively bankrupt in 1999 j.j. Abrams has absolutely no excuse in 2014. It doesn't help that the rest of the force awakens is equally a pale imitation of a new hope. If we've been shown a similar origin and then veered off in a new direction, it might not be as egregious.

Han was able to understand Shyriiwook, aka, 'Tongue of the tree people', because according to the EU young Han Solo trilogy, he grew up and was cared for by an elderly Wookiee widow called Dewlanna, his closest friend and the closest thing to a real mother he ever knew. She couldn't speak Basic, and Han could barely speak Shyriiwook, but each understood the other. Han was in his early teens when he first met Dewlanna, and at that point, you learn stuff very quickly. Dewlanna was nearing 600, but she had more than likely interacted with enough Basic speakers to know what was said and when. In all likelihood, Han's second language was one of the main Wookiee languages. Rey knowing Shyriiwook is, at best, explained away by her idolising the most famous Wookiee in the galaxy following the drop of the Empire. But in all honesty, you can put it down to one thing. Lazy writing.

Her skill level, personality, and attitude towards life are in no way aligned with her given origin. It is one of the most off putting things about her character. She is naïve, posh, personable and comes across like an overly sheltered teen, not someone that is starving, desperate, unnurtured, abused, neglected, or isolated (you know character traits aligned with a loner scavenger). Her background as a scavenger does not explain her fighting abilities or her competence with piloting, mechanics etc. Yes surprise surprise a scavenger is not typically a great mechanic; it turns out taking things apart is not the same as putting them together and making them work. If maybe they showed her doing other jobs for her rations; such as engaging in a fighting pit or doing transporting jobs; then her skills would justified. But they didn't they instead focused on her isolation to try to manipulate the audience in to feeling maximum sympathy towards her. They pulled out every stop they could to try to force her to be likable to the audience. And that manipulation annoyed the shit out of me.
@patrickthomas2119
@patrickthomas2119 Год назад
To elaborate, and to vent, one of the scenes that first set me off about her character and what they were clearly tying to do with her was in the scene where she first meets BB-8. Nothing about the scene makes sense. first off she confronts the other scavenger about him trying to claim BB-8 as scrap (which is what scavengers do). Rey for some reason confronts him and for some reason with one snap of her finger he gives up his prize and runs away. Fine I guess Rey is claiming it for herself right? No she is setting it free? why? Oh and she is having full conversations with it; fully able to understand what it is saying? Is she a droid? she can comprehend auditable binary? I remember a day when you needed a translator of some kind to understand droids. And then she doesn't even help BB-8 but sends him ALONE to the very village the other scavenger would have been taking him. What was the point helping BB-8 just to then send him to be picked up by another scavenger. Why does she treat BB-8 like a person but then is annoyed with helping him? Why the fuck did she intervene in the first place if she is that reluctant to help. this scene literally broke my brain with how many things just don't make sense and how illogical it all is. But it is so clear what they were doing. They both wanted to make her a moral good character (so you root for her like Luke) but at the same time make her moral ambiguous (like Han Solo in the first film). They wanted her to be all the characters you loved rolled into one. Problem with that is, it simply doesn't work. You can't just mash together personalities of multiple characters into one.

I can almost see why they did it - they probably wanted a way to "detect" him, but without saying he was so powerful in the force that QuiJon detected him from orbit - it gave a reason for that bloodtest. 14:40 the thing is Rey has no absolute reason starting up the same way Anakin and his son did, Anakin and Luke grew up in the same planet, they were both natives off, being father and son it made sense for Luke to live in the same planet his father once did before turning into the dark side in a narrational perspective its consistant to how the two characters are made to parallel each other but ended up in two seperate paths in the end of there journey, meanwhile Rey was not even related to the chosen one and his son....😂

as a thought, she learned it from imperial database she could've found during her scavenging in Starship Graveyard. Wookies were slaves in the empire time (so it's logical for empire's ship to have that data) AND rey kind of strives for adventure (the only thing that keeps her on jakku is the idea that her family will return for her) so it would be logical for her to start learning any language what so ever because she hopes to leave it one day (also the girl lived in a desert, there's not much to do anyway) jj's the writing however does nothing to explain her abilities properly
@DarkHourYT

That was kind of the point. I'm not huge into throw away line explanations like "that's a one in a million shot" for the holdo maneuver. However, give me SOMETHING. This is a pattern in writing now a days not just Rey, but she's by far the greatest example
