Read it several times, the more I read the more I sensed a poverty mentality, a meanness and callousness, and an outright encouragement of emotional manipulation. And ironically I found that, while his advice was valuable to certain degrees, it always came at a cost that he'd never mention, because I don't think it occurred to him. Just a different wavelength I guess, but in my opinion, whatever power people could gain from his advice would come with some serious stipulations.

It's not a book what you should do, but what others will do or are capable of. Power is knowledge, knowledge is power. Power can be used for good or bad, but thinking power is bad will not prevent others from (ab)using it.

agreed. Even though I wouldn't personally abuse others or manipulate them using the tactics in 48 Laws, it does help to be aware of when others are attempting to use them on you. Then you can masterfully parry their tactics and always come out smelling like roses rather than shit (which is inevitably where the tactics of 48 laws leads you as a human).

Not outshining you boss, being bold, and not saying stupid stuf are examples of laws that you should adhere to. And there ones you can do so without hurting anyone. A lot of the laws can be interpreted in a way that does not even have a negative effect on anyone. Like get others to do the work but take the credit might convince someone to pay an overseas contractor on up-work to take over some of there small business task. Or it might convince them to learn some basic prompt engineering so they can use chat GPT to do parts of there business. As it is is essentiality the AI version of that law as it is being trained on the entirety of open source internet materials. It isn’t just simply a book about what you should or shouldn’t do or should just be aware of. The laws are situational and some will apply in many more jobs and situations than others.

I feel that his book helps us learn what to watch out for when dealing with people. I'm in my early 20s and i was and and still am to a certain extent quite naive when dealing with people in the sense that I could not easily understand the low key manipulation and narcissistic behavior of people around me. I would see everything in black and white and find it difficult to understand the gray. I'm still trying to figure it out....but this book gives good clues about what kind of weird stuff people are capable of while simultaneously acting like the best of friends.

The letting others take the credit has a lot of nuances so for some people it’s tough to take at face value. One thing that I think is important is not having the need for credit. You do what you do to achieve the desired outcome, and that in itself is rewarding. If you’re constantly seeking praise / reward your appetite for this will keep growing and you’ll feel frustrated. Getting these things as a surprise is much nicer, and even then crediting others will showcase your selflessness. Incidentally that’s also a great leadership quality. If a manager is trying to make out they’ve done loads of things that their team has actually done, it’s far less believable than a manager who praises their team. If you’re worried about the optics, your team’s performance is a reflection of how you lead them, and specifically empower them, to achieve great things.

The “master” is just the person above you. To attain the “heights of POWER”, it’s helpful to be aware of when you’re making that person jealous or insecure in their position. He mentioned 50 cent so use that example. When 50 cent was working with Dr Dre at the start of his career, and he was a nobody, the law wasn’t saying “don’t be a better rapper than him” or “rap shitty so he isn’t jealous”. It was saying don’t go in there and show him you’re a better producer than him in his own studio, don’t make him think that you’re gonna take over his shit. *If you’re a threat to him or his position of power, try to make sure he doesn’t know it.* I doubt that was a problem in that situation considering how good and dominant of a producer Dre was at the time, but that is the idea of the law. IF 50 cent had intended to take over Dre’s position of power, he should conceal this from Dre as long as Dre is his boss. Another example: if 50 cent, before he made it big, had had a friend who was also a rapper, who had a connection to a producer that 50 wanted, it would also be important for 50 to manage the relationship in such a way that his friend did not think “this guy is better than me, he’s gonna steal my record deal, maybe I shouldn’t help him network.” Managing this could involve all sorts of maneuvering to make yourself look harmless and unthreatening. This can extend to many other jobs and careers. Do your job well, but be aware that if you do your boss’ job better than him in front of him, he may try to get rid of you or block your rise to power.

I have never read the book but "do all the work and let others take the credit" I work as engineer and if I start allowing others to take credit then I'll loose my chance of ever getting a promotion. Please help me understand.

I think the problem with 48 laws is that it gives very little guidance on when and where you should use the laws. The best example is the chinese generals anecdotes. 1. A new emperor essentially bribes the generals of the former emperor instead of killing them to secure loyalty 2. An emperor merely defeats his enemy and lets him live, the enemy then betrays him 3. An emperor employs his old enemy and hes more loyal because he forgave him All these laws contradict eachother and Robert gives no indication of when either law is more applicable. Now people will say "Be formless" but in that case the book is of no use at all. Its comes down to the fact that there aren't any real laws to follow.

Same thing with "How to win friends and influence people". The person who introduced me to that book won me over at first but in the end I realized how he was an expert at manipulation. By the time I finished the book I could not stand that man. Read those books so you will recognize it when you come across it. Also people will use the bible for manipulation purposes.

I don't think even Robert Greene would consider himself one of the best nonfiction writers of 1998. The book is a pop pseudoscience cash grab for insecure cynics

Outshining the master/teacher is the whole point of the student/mentor relationship. We don´t flaunt it or even think about it, but we must never hesitate to be our best selves, no matter what. The ¨masters¨ ego needs to be toned down, too.

The writer seems to have ripped off _The Book of Worldly Wisdom_ by Balthazar Gracian. He was a Jesuit ambassador who had to negotiate alliances and work with difficult people. One of his 108 maxims was about not showing up your boss by being overtly smarter, cleverer or stronger than them. Another is to give them the impression that your proposed ideas are really theirs. Doing work for others who then take the credit for themselves actually weakens your position. Being irreplaceable or essential makes your position stronger.

Just imagine everyone are little controllable ants and then the laws of power flow naturally from there. Don't even need the book, you will have intuitively mastered the concept.

Most of the tools in the 48 laws of power can be used morally. Tools are seldom good or bad. A scalpel could be used to heal or to hurt.
