Why Russia's Ceasefire Proposal to the U.S. Went Nowhere

Last week, a report indicated that Russia approached the United States at the end of 2023, looking for a ceasefire in Ukraine. That Washington ignored the proposal is not interesting; the United States is not the one fighting the war. What is interesting is how the proposal itself appears to misinterpret where the bargaining power lies and how it has evolved over time. This video goes over the report and breaks down the current negotiating situation.

The fact is, if the conflict gets frozen once again after 2014, with Russia having taken and keeping more territories of Ukraine, we'll be here again in a few years, talking about a ceasefire after the next "special military operation" in Odesa, Kharkiv, and the rest of the Kherson, Donetsk, and Zaporizhia oblasts has stalled. With a strengthened Russia and a West that has fallen back to its slumbering peace-time mode, and some more fancy protagonists playing with their muscles, starting with China and Iran. I can be wrong, but I doubt I am.
@ActionAlligator
@ActionAlligator 3 месяца назад
2014 was a very different situation and a very different Ukraine. The current conflict looks like a disaster for Russia, all things considered. Russia is looking more and more like a desperately flailing fish trying to breathe, at the expense of innocent Ukrainians. Sure, neither of us can see the future and I'm not going to pretend I'm anything but a random online pleb without a clue, but based on my limited understanding and what other more knowledgeable people are reporting, I don't see this as some beginning of a line of Russian successes. These tugs of war with Russia, China, & Iran may end up starting WW3, which would be a horrible tragedy... but I don't see how they're going to actually win it.

Russia nationalizing a lot of businesses or forcing them to sell for fraction of actual value and also allowing the businesses afterwards to operate sometimes even without a new branding has REALLY soured people from investing into Russia for long time after the war. In regards to the comment about businesses being reluctant to invest in Russia, I have a personal example for that. The company I do IT work for is currently engaged in a lawsuit against certain Russian entities as a result of the war causing many high value investments being located in Russia at the time and no longer being able to be recovered or moved out of Russia, due to actions taken by Russian entities. It's been going on for about a year and a half, and the general vibe I get from the decision makers is that they plan to never invest in anything that resides in Russia again.
@TheRealIdiotIsntHere
@TheRealIdiotIsntHere 2 месяца назад
Russias GDP looks good but it's totally skewed by the war footing that they are running (for a SMO?) And the issue is also that along with declining interest in investing in Russia, the war effort destroys sectors of business to accommodate and make best use of the materials. The skilled men in these areas may then get sent to war or go elsewhere. Once the war stance is over the economy can't just pick back up where it left off without huge investment.

I’m a Republican in the US and it’s been frustrating seeing how large swathes of the party eat up Russian propaganda. Why wouldn’t we continue aiding Ukraine? We are a couple years into the conflict. Ukraine won the first part of the war by 1. Not folding 2. Pushing Russia out of half its gains and 3. Making allies with Europe and the US. It’s hard to remember now but when Russia first attacked most thought best case scenario was funding an insurgency. So great, we’ve limited Russia to small gains (given they wanted all of Ukraine), the Black Sea corridor is open and we have some stability. It is now a battle of attrition. Ukraine can win if it can keep up the fight till 2032 - Putin will be 82 years old and we know the Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan after a decade. Russians will tire out after a decade of war, tiny results (geopolitically speaking), economic stagnation and frankly an elderly leader. Ukraine is going to need a lot of work after that but hey, what else do we have to do? We will have to help rebuild Ukraine, exploit its resources, have lots of babies and more.

It's not about _learning_ the opponent's ability and willingness to continue fighting. It's about _destroying_ the enemy's will or ability to fight. The lines-on-maps nonsense is always irrelevant. It assumes that any settlement is automatically enforceable, when in fact no settlement except unconditional surrender is enforceable, and that only when the victor is willing and able to carry out an occupation. War ends when one side has lost the will or ability to keep fighting. When the positions of troops in the field are static, attrition is still going on. When no territory is lost or gained, one side or both is making progress toward wearing down the other's ability or will.
