My wonderful and very patient husband gave me a massive hug. He then said thank you. I said for what? He said for creating our family heirloom seed library even when family teased me about it, for learning how to grow food, and cook and preserve it. He said thank you for all my efforts to think ahead and to keep us safe…just in case. He said today, after so many years of watching me build my ‘crazy’ he finally understood, he finally truly got it. He said it was so overwhelming to see the problems for the first time and realise the problem was already solved for our family. Not so crazy afterall. Keep up the good work everyone. Thank you Leisa for your leadership and realism. I learn so much from you and I’m so grateful.

When Mt ex left in the middle of the night. He took every dime we had. I've been so hungry, I was actually throwing up bile, bcuz there was nothing in my stomach. I never want to be in that situation again. So, now I prep so that I have at least 3 months worth of food in my old broken down motorhome. I have a tiny solar system that charges my cell phone, 3 lights, and my 9" fan. It could charge my fridge/freezer if I had a couple more batteries easily in the summer time. But not in the winter. And barely keeps 1 light and my cell phone charged in the winter, bcuz Michigan is not the sunshine state. In the winter I choose heat over food. That's another reason I try to have at least 3 months worth of food. I think I'm doing a great job taking care of me.

My mother was born in ‘32 during depression My grandparents farmed and I remember they got rations of sugar flour and other staples. My grandparents house is still standing because it was made from pine heartwood, resistant to termites. My mom in her 80’s Told me that seeds would be the most important thing to have. She was never interested in money or wealth, but loved her family ❤. She died November of 2019, right before all the crazy co$&id started, which was a blessing. Her birthday is June 14!! Flag day! I’ll be flying it proudly in honor of her. She canned and saved and recycled and taught us all how to make the best out of any situation. Miss her…

I'm from a big family, so I learned how to do a lot. We are in our 60s, and the kids are scattered across the country. I've never been a doom and gloom person, but things are going to get bad. 68, single (divorced for so many yrs I barely remember being married), small town girl who moved to BIG cities 1200 miles from home. Had a good and interesting career until I decided to build my homestead house and move to a rural area. Then I had the double car, metal garage door crash onto my head and cause traumatic brain injury. No more professional job, so I had to make sure I was ready for whatever. Started canning, dehydrating foods, and creating my own complete pantry. I am trying to encourage others to have extra supplies and food 'just in case". My parents grew up during the Depression and I listened to their stories about the coal mining towns where they grew up and growing their food and harvesting their meat animals. If they could do it, I can do it. I raise chickens for eggs and meat and breed goats for sale and meat. I have more than enough "stuff" from so many hobbies that I could probably figure out a way to make whatever I need. I have planned and executed those plans. I can only depend on me.

My ultimate goal is to sever as many ties to any governmental system as possible. From taking control of my health, my finances & my stores so that I will NEVER have to be dependent upon anything that the government can "provide". Because anything that is provided by ANYONE other than yourself, can just as quickly be taken away. It's up to us, & us alone to provide for ourselves & our own & maybe even be in a position to help others if practical. Anything else is as uncertain as a weather forecast. 😉

Papa 1886... they taught us foraging, gardening and putting food up for winter. And about thrift stores! Also to keep a little something in the "sock drawer." Mama was a little "special" so Grandma taught me (Mama's oldest of 8) how to take care of everything. Best gift I have ever received. Carried that into my marriage/family as well. Who's going to take care of you when you get old? That's exactly what my hysterical mother screamed at me when I told her I wasn't going to have kids. Yes, because I didn't have kids I was the one who had to take care of her in her old age. I ended up doing so much better physically/financially than my siblings with families. I totally believe I'm the only person to take care of myself, I have made the proper decisions for myself and will never be dependent on anyone else. Once I can no longer take care of myself I have set up benefits (already paid for) that will handle my daily needs. In the meantime, I garden/cook/preserve food, keep my home in good working order so I'm safe, never put myself in a position to need to ask for help, and keep informed on the topics affecting my life. My disabled husband and I have managed this all on a civil servants pay/pension, we pushed like crazy when younger to make sure we would be self sufficient. It is the way it should be done.

I do wonder what people plans are when they don't have children. That is not why I had my child however. My siblings and I cared for my father as he died of brain cancer. He was unable to be admitted to a care facility because he was diagnosed quickly and it was very aggressive. He was basically sent home after being in the hospital for 3 days. He became immobile pretty quickly and was bed ridden for some time. You have stated you have benefits set up, which I think is honestly the smartest thing to do and even if people do have children they should do this. I wonder some times if people just think they will up and die. For a lot of people, its a slow sad process. Thank you for sharing. I am just kind of typing out loud here and thinking.

I also, several years ago, had a pre-need, which has paid for my funeral, including the casket. You can find information at any funeral home. I'm 51 and served in Desert Storm, so I have pretty much always had a belief to keep a stocked pantry and freezer. It was maybe 10 years ago, when my "quality brand chest freezer" broke down and no one noticed until it was time to pull something out for the next day's supper and everything was not only thawed, but room temperature - I snapped. I felt physically broken because there were hundreds of dollars worth of food, bought on sale and in bulk in that freezer and it ALL went to waste. I was a divorced mother of three growing boys, subsisting on less than $20k per year. After a short time literally crying over the lost meals, I decided to try some different methods and just stock my pantry. After all, I didn't have enough money in savings and had no credit cards with which to purchase even a second-hand freezer to replace the one that broke. I had relied on SNAP/food stamps for a time, too, but as quickly as I could I got my family off of that assistance. I put in a garden, which has expanded over the years. I learned to ferment, home can more than just jams and jellies, and dehydrate foods. It's been wonderful to know the pantry is stocked and if something should happen where we can't harvest from our garden or "just run to the store", we'll still be fed. So - I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I can connect dots if they're big enough. I try not to pay TOO MUCH attention to all the paranoid rhetoric, but just the basic news periodically (because daily would totally either stress me out or desensitize me to the worst of the things that are reported on). I work at keeping a stocked pantry for any "just in case" time, regardless if it's some Mad Max Zombie Apacolypse or simply a bad garden harvest year.

We grew up gardening, canning, hunting , etc. In the last twenty years I've taken over all decisions/research for my health, food not relying on corporate media to spoon me their version of what to do. The laws are written by and for rich white men (former IRS employee here) not the average citizen. If we don't look after ourselves, No One else will. 66, I started preparing when hurricane Katrina happened. I saw all those people standing in line for water and food. I said oh heck no that will not be me. I need to stay at my home but remove myself if need be. I have planned for all scenarios and on low income it’s tricky. But with tornados, possible floods if the dam breaks, dam 20 miles away. EMP or CME, water plant going down, ice storm power outage etc so on so. I know the “ government “ will not be able to help. I help family and friends when job loss, sickness, storms with my supplies. I think I got a huge wake up call during hurricane Katrina.

I started gardening and canning when the Brady Bunch were all living at home. I kept canning because teenage boys have 2 hollow legs and never get full. I garden and can today because we are now both retired and it keeps our food bills down. I watch canning channels looking for new recipes. I like yours because of your by the book canning. Happy gardening and canning.

Getting together good medical kits for us and our dogs. Helping those near & dear to understand the value of prepping as they want / can do. There are four of us in this venture, 3 households, each with something to offer. If the shtf in any way we will get together to support each other. I do most of the food prep, my partner deals with the medical stuff (veterinarian) with my help. One friend provides food & supplies for prepping, the other provides physical help in the garden & home. I don’t go out to work, they do. So prepping for our future, letting those who ‘need’ to know, know (my sister who i will always help) - doing what i can for others i care about (v close friends, who think i’m canning etc as a hobby only) and no-one else needs know where or what we have. Just the thought of another pandemic or event that could keep me stuck at home scares the bejeebers out of me. And Floridians had it easy compared to most states! I prep for the realities of life, but with a conspiracy theory or two runs in my little prepper brain. I've learned to can, vacuum seal, dehydrate and grow veggies in containers. All since 2021. True facts! There's an old proverb: The left wing and the right wing are both on the same bird. Somewhere along the way, we forgot this whole grand experiment of a country started because people wanted to live life their own way and take care of themselves and not be forced to rely on government. And they did pretty darn well with far less than we have. I do what I do because I never want to be a burden to anyone, most specifically my kiddo. Oh my lord did this hit home! Can I get an amen sister?? I have experienced so many times of struggle over the last 40 years, that if I hadn't learned to prepare for whatever comes my way, I would have been homeless. We went through numerous layoffs with the auto industry. We had auto accidents with injuries, surgeries, owned a home that lost power regularly due to Detroit Edison not maintaining its lines throughout Michigan over the years despite being paid too high per kwh, job losses, loss of a spouse and a financial advisor that lost our 401ks value in under 3 months, and ultimately disabled, and having to sell the family home, before losing it, while fighting for social security. Each time we got through it and came out the other side we made a point of continuing to stay ready for whatever comes our way. I am not a conspiracy theorists but I will always believe in being prepared. I see the faces of family members when they visit, looking at my pantry, and making cracks about it. I don't care. We hedge inflation by buying on sale and storing it safely for future use. We eat very healthy, and scratch cook most of our meals and we aim to be healthy and active for decades to come.

Then we moved to the farm and there were many winters that we were snowed in and had no way of getting to a grocery store. Infact, one winter we were snowed in for a week before the county brought backhoes in to dig us out. We had over 22 inches. And we were able to help a neighbor. He was a cook at a local restaurant. So, he ate all of his meals there. He had 1 can of green beans in his house. He never thought about planning to be snowed in, or a layoff, or whatever. Needless-to-say, he was very grateful for the help and moved as soon as he could get up the hill. There are so many reasons to prep. And you can't depend on your neighbors for the help if something happens. They may be like our neighbor and not prep either.

These and many other things that our grandparents knew how to do have not been passed down to us from the last generation.
