Kiba was one of the most important members in the team. He was the one able to track Sasuke, through his smell. Unless there would be any reason for Sasuke be carrying again a female bikochu when he left the village, Shino could never track him like that. Kiba could arguably be the most narratively important member of that mission, supposing there is intent in making the track of Sasuke more realistic.

Shino instead of Kiba would make more sense. Gaara helps Lee Temari helps Shikamaru Kankuro helps Shino They all help the ones they fought in the Exams Reminds me of that ZeXal moment where the Arclight Brothers help the guys they fought. I love this trope. Enemies to helpers.

The real reason is because Shino’s insects would have trivialized a lot of encounters especially vs Kidomaru since they can infest your body, he had different breeds for any situation and can absorb chakra so Miyamoto wrote him out. Plus Shino already showed he can beat high level genin who are essentially elite chunin-borderline jounin in terms of skills just without the rank same as sound 4.

I think... Kishimoto didn't had idea how or what power up give to Shino without being repetitive (you know, new bugs that just invade oponent and give him an insta win) and that's the reason because Shino never does absolutely nothing

I would have liked to see 2 leaf ninjas vs 1 of the sound 4. I personally think the 1v1 makes it seem like the sound 4 are too weak or the curse mark stage 2 is weak. If these genin nobodies beat them (even if it was close) it makes it feel like a single jonin would stomp all 4 of them. Plus it would be interesting to see the dynamic/teamwork between two genin on their first mission by themselves and nobody would have to be left out. Just make the sound 4 stronger and make the spider vs bug fight happen but the spider guy is emitting web so shino would have to be more resourceful than just drain that guys chakra (plus in theory they would be taking in nature energy so they would have a high amount of chakra).

It is easy to say that neji needed his moment, lee needed to prove himself, naruto is self explanatory, shikamaru had to be the leader, and kiba was necessary for tracking. But all they had to do was create another enemy, having him get diffed by shino, shino then comes to help his teammate kiba against the twins, but is ultimately to exhausted, then kankuro saves the day

I actually would have liked to see Shino fight against Jarubo. For one, they both use the same basic tactic of using their enemies resources to make themselves stronger. Namely chakra. It might also be a good way of showing how Konoha is different from all the other villages. We have this seemingly standard procedure of sacrificing people for the sake of the mission, to the point where Jirobo outright says the only reason he's fighting Choji is because they're the two weakest members of their groups. If Shino stayed behind on that first fight, he could have scolded the enemy. Told him that no, he's one of if not the strongest member of their team. The only reason they agreed to leave him behind was because they knew he'd catch up. After the fight, he could have even went to be backup on the next fight. Especially if he's strong enough to be doing jonin missions, supervised or not.

Shino worked hard for those vacation hours, and by god he's gonna use them.

i think the best explanation is that he was originally going to have shino be a part of the mission but couldn't come up with a way that made shino be in a losing battle for kankuro to have to step in and finish the job.

The advantage Shino would have against Kidomaru was the fact his insects could swarm him if the dude didn't see them, which is something that happened to all of Shino's enemies; they are both mid-long fighters if necessary.

Shino was just one of these cases of Kishimoto shooting his own feet. He made a character so strong that he had to put him asside, nerf him, or just pretend he was not strong to begin with (even tho we all know he was strong), just because he wasn't a good enough writer to excuse having vilains weaker then he was. It happened with the goat Gaara (they did him very dirty), with Neji, Itachi and Shino.

What would have been cool with Kiba vs Sakon is Kiba should have got an upgrade to his power or jutsu for winning against sakon. Kishimoto could have some how incorporated Sakons body morphing technique into Kibas jutsu, so we the viewers can see some character development from Kiba.

I think it comes down to popularity polls. Kishimoto was probably advised to not put Shino in and choose Kiba instead. That's also probably why the Akatsuki and Shikamaru got so much love and why so many others fell to the wayside Though Rock Lee remains a mystery. He had a lot more potential

The point is that Shikamaru formed a team of friends, not the best. Choji and Kiba are his friends Neji is a person he highly respects He didn't bring the best but what he could find and knew they would agree. Ideally Shino, Tenten, Ino would be better combos in terms of synergy

I think a better way to manage him being kinda overpower is by having him in a situation like "I lost too many bugs in my last battle, im regrowing them, sorry lol", where he is clearly weaker and with consequences of just throwing your bugs as shield or other things that kill them.

i think one thing people overlook about shino is that he was considered for anbu material.. because his body could house the secret insect of the aburame clan but ultimately the lack of shino being present for the sasuke retrieval mission boils down too Shikamaru failing to realize the potential Shino had as an ally and combatant toppled with naruto forgetting that it was shino who allowed for him and sakura to catch up to sasuke when they were chasing after gaara. but at the least kishimoto did want to show us that shino could be useful an important by having him join naruto the second time around in shippuden and he was able to help the group discern what kind of ninjutsu that "tobi" was using to avoid their attacks which one could argue is why kishimoto decided to end their fight with that chapter because he didn't want "tobi" to be fully revealed just yet by having him struggle against his direct counter being present which was kakashi.

Kankuro beat Sakon, but Ukon was in control of the body at the time and it was stated that Ukon doesn’t really controls the body as good as Sakon, and aside from that he was running out of chakra (stated as well)

I always thought Shino should have faced Kabuto during The Sasuke Retrieval Arc. Let's say one by one the team splits up against each member of The Sound Collective as in canon, until it's just down to Naruto and Shino. Though he could help any of the others with their respective fights, Shino opts to stick with Naruto for the sake of the mission until Kabuto blocks their path. As a test of Sasuke's conviction, Kabuto allows Naruto to pass, reasoning that if he can convince Sasuke to return to Konoha, then he was a failed experiment. Naruto moves on, but Shino challenges Kabuto. Kabuto is ambivalent, but indulges him. Despite Shino"s skills, Kabuto's mastery of medical ninjutsu combined with prep time means he's accounted for every possible tactic Shino can imagine at this stage of his training. For the first time in Shino"s life, he'd be completely in over his head. He might put up an admirable fight in spite of being as out of his depth as Naruto and Sasuke against Zabuza or Haku, but with no safety nets, he'd only surviving by using insects to fake his death. To add insult to injury, it would later be confirmed that had Kabuto cared enough about Shino to pay closer attention, he could've easily seen he was still alive. Assuming Kishimoto had any intention of properly utilizing Shino (or the supporting cast on the whole) this would offer something to build off of.

The in-store explanation we get is that he was away on a mission with his father, and I think the real-world explanation is Kishimoto couldn't think of what to do with his character I mean when you're dealing with multiple characters in a story when you're a writer you have that means you have to come up with something for every character to do but you can't come up with something you leave that character out let me give you an example of the 90s X-Men show and the Justice League show from the 2000s you noticed that now I don't know if you see no shows or not but you notice that it's kind of rare to see all the members of the team in a single episode usually it's just like 4 or 5 members who are missing 3 or missing something like that

My best bet on why cool and strong characters like Chino and Rock Lee got either Canonically nerfed or narratively nerfed is because they had the potential to be just as popular as Naruto and Sasuke as they display the same character tropes. Rock Lee is a whimsical underdog that is quirky and has a bubbly character, just like Naruto, and Chino is the stoic 2 cool 4 school character that has an awesome design which is edgy enough to not be cringey. They are sleeper fan favorites now and they were sleeper fan favorites 15 years ago. Had Kishimoto not shelved them as quick as he did, fans might have started demanding way too much for secondary characters.

6:47 huh, this art is weird, showing Pain with orange-ish colored iris yet simultaneously still appearing to have the rinnegan. I actually kinda dig this design, it could merely be that it's unique and unusual specifically due to it deviating from the norm we're so used to seeing, but I could imagine a parallel universe where they went with this design and it still being incredibly well liked, even moreso. Then you could even vary up the color between characters and not all rinnegan would look identical, and it solves the sharingan/rinnegan switching problems etc.

Shino is unironically really powerful, he could even beat an Otsutski if the writers didn’t hate him. Bugs a busted in the Naruto verse, they can’t be negated like every other jutsu unless they’re killed off and it’s extremely difficult to kill off every single bug of an Aburame attack

I think i remember a smug line from Shino on the second Sasuke retrieval mission saying: "Sasuke got away because I was not around that time"

I think the behind the scenes reason he was left out was two-fold: 1) He's already strong enough to make the fights less challenging, thus less growth to show like the other fights have, which was one of the main reasons for this style of 1v1 fights. 2) With the idea that they all get powerups, I don't think Kishimoto had one to give Shino. I mean, he had no real change in his abilities until the war with the giant bugs and poison bugs. And yes, Neji didn't really get a powerup during his fight either, but he was initially intended to die. So the powerup can be seen as a necessity for the genin to avoid death. It would be really odd to have Shino win with his base abilities and be so visibly stronger than the others. Especially when he's such a minor character by comparison (though he's probably my favorite character). And having him get backup from the Sand would be even worse if he didn't have some new ability to show off first. It'd feel like he only needed the backup because his moveset hadn't changed since the Exams, and he doesn't come off as that lazy.

Perhaps Shino could have been taken out early in order to preserve the danger. Imagine Sasuke and the Sound Four doing a team battle with Shikamaru's team and Shino before they do their individual battles. Sasuke, acknowledging Shino's strength, decides he is the only threat and wants to take him out early. During the battle, Sasuke lands a powerful fireball on Shino. He lives but is so badly damaged that he is unable to continue with the mission.

Shino vs Sound 4: Jirobo: Shino could easily outsmart him but needs to be careful with his raw power since one wrong move and Shino is dead Tayuya: bugs can break Shino out of genjutsu and just has or watch out for her spiritual beings, which likely can kill the swarm of bugs Sakon/Ukon: the strongest of the sound 4 in terms of speed and Taijutsu, Shino’s second toughest fight imo Kidomaru: toughest fight imo due to his summons and long range arrows

I think Kiba was setup more as a rival for Naruto so he got that opportunity to get some screen time. Kishimoto probably didn’t want too many fights so it wouldn’t get too confusing so he had to reduce the numbers. Shino was a cool character but apart from his ability he wasn’t that memorable and didn’t interact much with the others because of his passiv and quiet nature. There wasn’t anything that was set up in the narrative for Shino unlike with Kiba and Choji who still had to prove themselves, so that’s probably why he chose to include them.

shino seems like a hard counter to sakon and ukon cause there whole gimmick is merging with a targets body but shino has his bugs in his body and they could easily attack them from the inside or just siphon there chakra at a high rate

I mean its either that or maybe kishi knew he could only take so many ninja on this mission and picked some fan favorites, some of which he may have even intended to kill off before some hypothetical 3rd party informed him of how well that would go over killing these said favorites. But, whos to say?

Kidomaru's spiders vs Shino's beetles would have been an interesting fight.

Absolutely. Shino can fight long and mid range well. Sakon is close range. Sakon/udon would have bugs all over them and not be able to track shino easily. Even is they use that bonding jutsu, it’s possible that shino, as an aburame gives their bodies to host the bugs. Bonding with them could cause u to be internally infested with bugs which for some other ninja would be painful and chakra draining.

Kiba was the best to sniff out Sasuke or enemies outside of neji's Byakugan. Kiba for smell/tracking, neji for scanning, choji for defense, shikamaru for control, Naruto for stalling/ clean up

I whole heartedly agree that Shino was very underused. He was simply too strong in that part of the story. honestly it wouldnt have shocked me if he had been allowed to become a jonin right along with Neji when the timeskip happened. And him getting saved by Kankoro would have been more impactful from a story telling perspective. But oh well. Kiba does woof woof things so he was automatically cooler than Shino. A shame it had to be something uncool like bugs.

I fully believe Shino is the second strongest genin in Og Naruto, right after Neji. Not only he was dominant in the few fights he had. The Sasuke retrieval arc does the thing where sand ninja come just to flex how much stronger they are than the leaf with Temari and Kankuro ending the fight in seconds. So Kankuro effortlessly beats Ukon - granted Ukon was exhausted and damaged but still even in that state Ukon would be able to fight back if Kankuro wasn't strong. The same Kankuro lost to Shino, well he managed to claw a draw, but Shino was without a doubt the dominant fighter

it makes sense that kiba would fight sakon because it’s 2 vs 2 so a similar matchup BUT gaara helped lee and temari helped shikamaru and they both have connections because they fought each other but kiba doesn’t have any connection with kankuro and shino does. I always imagined that all 15 genins should be present in this arc. Of course, the fights would have been 2x1, instead of 1x1, but it's actually a good thing. The Sound Four should have been waaay more powerful, they were Orochimaru's top tier henchmen, like jounin level, not kinda-chunin level. Besides, it would not increase that much the arc's lenght and it would close better some character arcs. Bear me out: Jiroubou fights Choji AND Ino. Ino could had developed a new technique like a mental attack. Jiroubou could be written as a formidable physical threat + extreme mental resilience. Ino's arc will be complete as she learns to respect Choji. Kidoumaru fights Neji AND Hinata. Making Hinata and Neji fight side by side, protecting each other as equals would have been a beautiful conclusion to their story on Classic Era. Tayuya fights Shikamaru AND Tenten. Not much to say, Tenten has to be present, and maybe she could talk a bit with Temari when she shows to save them. Sakon & Ukon fight Kiba AND Shino. The video explains very well how Shino's power could interact with Sakon/Ukon's powers. Maybe you could create a third secret brother, to ramp up even more the challenge before Kankuro rescues them. Kimimaru fights Naruto AND Sakura before Rock Lee appears. Sakura's realisation that she is too weak to retrieve Sasuke should be in this moment and she asks Naruto to go. Rock Lee and Sakura fights Kimimaru together (it would be funny to see Inner Sakura reacts to Drunken Lee). It would be the PERFECT opportunity to Sakura to get a new technique, probably a cool genjutsu (as hyped through all Classic Era). Gaara appears and fight basically solo as usual.

Yeah low Key, i like Kiba. But, it kind of messed up the Sand 3 saving their former foes scene. Gaara saved Lee, Temari saved Shikamaru, but rather than Kankuro saving Shini, it was Kiba. If it had been Shino, it would have been nice since it would allign that each sand member previously fought the person they are saving

Shino would probably fighting the spider guy. It would fit the theme (insect vs insect). The bugs could probably cut the spider net. And would probably find Kidomaru. But, its questionable, if they could overcome the Gold armor trick. At the same time, has Shino nothing to counter the arrows of Kidomaru. The bugs would probably only give covers for Shino.

The Sasuke Retrivial mission should have been a mission for ALL of the Konoha 11. They all should have try to bring back Sasuke and their failures would have been a good reason for them to train and get stronger. For the fights we got : - Hinata and Neji vs Kidomaru (first Time hinata is going to use the Protecting Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. Her and Neji winning this but they both badly injured) -Shino and Kiba vs Sakon & Ukon (At first, team 8 is winning thanks to Shino carying the fight but the Power of the sound duo is a counter to shino’s powers. Just like in the manga Kankuro is saving their ass) -Choji vs Jirobo (Nothing change here) -Ino Sakura and Tenten vs Tayuya (Instead of appearing in Shippuden, this fight is going to showcase Ino sensorial abilities. Her and Sakura are pretty good at Genjutsu allowing them to put a decent fight with the help of tenten but once Tayuya turn into mode 2, only Temari is able to save them. The Konoha girls realise their weaknesses and promise to do better in the future) -Lee and Shikamaru vs Kidomaru (Saved by Gaara)

The scouting/tracking ability of Shino is reason why he was left out. The village would know where Sasuke was from the jump way before shippuden. The female bug and male bug tracking theory was op. The story would have been ruined for Kish
