Remember alolan-muk? I think he fell to RU at one point, yet he had a strange habit of making himself useful in every tier. He could check mewtwo, lunala, mega-gengar and even xerneas.
A-Muk was a C-rank mon in Ubers whenever it was viable. Also whoever said A-muk was the *best* check against caly-S is high on crack, because that is just false lmao
It can tank 2-3 hits with AV and knock off which would do a lot to those mons not to mention the random poison touch activation makes it annoying against those psychic & ghost uber mons. Imo not the best Caly-S counter out there but it does its job.
@@doomknightsepulchure Checked SM ubers viability right now, alolan muk is listed as B- rank next to arceus-ghost and shaymin-s, though idk how outdated this is. Its usefulness is often matchup dependent, but knock off + poison touch can be surprisingly punishing for switch ins. Muk wasn't in gen 8 and doesn't have pursuit anymore so idk what it'd even do to caly-s in gen 9.
At the start, I was already thinking "I guess it's like quagsire?" and then you said "because of it's ability, unaware" and i went" SO, JUST LIKE QUAG..."
skeledirge is one of those pokemon who reminds you that you can't judge viability in a vacuum, a pokemon is made by it's relationship to it's competition
Dirge was a huge part of my best pre-home OU team, so when I heard it dropped to UU post home I was very sad. But hearing about how he's taking on titans in ubers is great, so let's give a hand for our favorite sounds-like-a-train alligator!
I'm so glad the best starter in the series also happens to be really really strong, without the need for the charizard treatment of getting a super duper special unique gimmick for it
Ain't that the truth, Charizard is like the nepo baby that gets everything handed to them by daddy whereas Skeledirge just wants to start an indie band with their phoenix best friend. Addendum: If Gen 3 OU Charizard is in the room, you get a pass for being a cool dood
I absolutely love Skeledirge! Alligators are my favorite animal, and fire/ghost is my favorite typing, so it has definitely shot up to my favorite starter. Sadly I didn't use it much in the story because I got a Gholdengo before the league lol I'm happy it's getting the love it deserves!
Skeledirge in UU is actually a war crime. Wouldn’t be surprised to see UUBL in its future, if not just rising back up when the OU meta gets shaken up again post DLC
Fuecoco was my first fire type starter. Ive never particularly liked any of the other fire starters except blaziken, but even then I still prefer mudkip and treeco. Im glad I broke my norm for such a good mon though, skeledirge was worth it.
Maybe a video on Moltres next? Another historically lower-tier mon that has reached OU usage because its type combination matches up incredibly well against current OU's top threats
I don't play competitively, but I thought skeledirge was overpowered for just a regular playthrough. Once I learned of torch song + throat spray. The already easy game became a walk in the park
What I'm finding funny is how all the Pokémon in A tier or higher are amazing largely due to their abilities (Minus Arceus forms, but still). And then there's the only poison type legendary Eternatus who has a largely useless ability pressure. Imagine if it actually had a good ability. Like why not levitate? It's a literal alien dragon. But if it had levitate I'm pretty sure it'd be S+ or atleast S tier. It'd be able to check both Arceus Ground and Arceus Fairy.
MA BOI HE SUCCEEDS Extra note: I'm liking the fact that this means Skeledirge could become even better later on with some luck. Here's to hoping future matchups will forever be in Skeledirge's favor!
He's become one of my favorite Pokémon, I honestly don't know how he got made, like, you're telling me there's ACTUALLY a person out there capable of creating something so perfect?
@@mandalorianhunter1 Wait, really? Dude Totodile's my favorite too! he was my first ever Pokémon in the games, my first ever Pokémon card, and my first ever best-est buddy!
In my humble opinion, a shitmon that has a niche use in Ubers is infinitely more interesting than a strong OU Pokémon that gets banned for being too strong. You gotta love the underdogs like Quagsire, Gastrodon, Ariados, etc. that have potential to be made into a RU-vid video thanks to their sheer conversation-starting potential. "Hey do you remember that silly little goofy goober bug? Yeah he kills the alien space virus" Of course, Skeledirge isn't actually a shitmon, he's UU after all, that's basically the equivalent of being Uber in gen 3 or something, but you get the idea.
Nice to see skeledirge finalky being useful playing through pokemon scarlet I noticed how weak he was (new player btw) so it'll be interesting to try him in ubers
Skelidirge knows how to tank a lot of hits, even ones it is weak against. It hits hard as well. Definitely best starter in generation 9. It was my MVP in my first play through when i did a team of generation 9 starters. It destroyed Larry's gym once I used it on my second play through.
imagine when they make a legendary with 680 bst and with the ability "calmness" or something that is just rebranded unaware. edit: the new galapagos turtle with all types and therefore seemingly being "typeless" would make sense to get something like that
@@Jerome7-v5u Let me guess, next you'll tell me it also functions as a better version of filter. Yeah right Pokémon would never make tha- Pokémon: "and now we'd like to introduce our latest creation, Arceus's dad, A-RC-eus, (the RC stands for "Really Cool") This dude does everything, heck, we had to scrap every pre-existing Pokémon for our new game just to balance him! And "balance him" is being generous!"
My favourite older example of this is Shedinja. Shedinja was always a bottom tier Pokemon, but performed the best in ubers, as a surprisingly high percentage of the uber tier didn't typically run any moves that could hit it. If you could bait out and defeat the ones that could hit it early in the fight, Shedinja just became a "win by default."
Guess this shows how good the ability unaware can be. Holding off some of the top Arceus forms, E-Killer and Fairy Arceus, and Zacian-C and Koraidon isn't something you see every day, even if it doesn't Terastalize. Quagsire was surprisingly effective in gen 8 ubers for the same reason, that is until Zacian got banned from the tier since having to run Unaware Quagsire just so Zacian wouldn't stomp your team was a bad restraint on teambuilding.
This video could also be summarized by the utter lack of strong fighting, steel, or fairy offensive threats. It will always be excellent in a tier that spams offensive steels and fairies.
Unrelated to Skeledirge, but y'know, I've spent all of this time viewing Genesect as this mythical, unobtainable prize, brilliant but never to be had. (which honestly just makes him the best "Mythical" out of all of them) But I've never stopped to ask: How IS Genesect in game? Is he any good? Is he any fun to use? As a long-standing Genesect lover who has only now made this realization I have so many questions that I need answers to.
It shits on OU for a week until it's quickbanned without vote, then is irrelevant in Ubers. Been that way since Gen 5, they didn't even bother letting it in OU in Gen 9 lol
Outside of Terastallizing it's typing has 5 weeknesses which isn't good, something Id avoid being anything beyond 4 weekness, but with wil o wisp it help get around that problem. On top of that with it's a huge amount hp and decent defenses to sponge damage as well.
any other exampls of this? i know gastrodon always popped up in vgc when kyoger was legal and id assume that gives him some neice in ubers when there are strong water types
I love seeing a "low-tier trash" pokemon rise from UU or PU etc and make its name in Ubers. Imagine the scene: someone shows up with a mon that got laughed out of OU, and suddenly *literal gods* start sweating bullets and hyperventilating, trying to excuse themselves from the match like "oh you know what, I left a universe in the oven gotta go". Also sets up a wierd rock-paper-scissors situation where ubers can beat lots of OU, OU stomps skeledirge out of the tier, but skeledirge can thrash many ubers. On the personal side, Skelley was my pick when playing single player because I loved how the pre and final evolutions looked, and I stand by that choice even today. Happy to see Skelley still destroying gods and self-proclaimed gods. ^_^
In fairness, Skele is in no way low tier trash. Still a solid mon in OU and one of the best in UU. Just a mon that people aren't using right now cause of meta shifts. Skele will prob rise back to OU at some point.
I wish the only way koraidon could beat skeledirge was band dragon moves…. Just pretend koraidon can’t tera and… it still can lose to wacky stuff like taunt but it would be better :D
Another example of an actual terrible Pokémon that fares well in Ubers depending on the generation is Shedinja. In gen 3, Shedinja is nowhere to be seen in standard play because of Tyranitar and its sandstorm that instantly KOs it, and the prevalence of spikes in pretty much every tier. But in Ubers, Tyranitar isn't a problem at all, and spikes aren't as common; furthermore, Shedinja completely walls top threats like Kyogre and Latios. Same thing in gen 8, as Shedinja doesn't need to worry about entry hazards thanks to Heavy-Duty Boots, and it still walls Kyogre, as well as newer additions like Zygarde-Complete and Zacian-Crowned. Granted, in both cases, it won't be as useful as Skeledirge, and it's very tricky to use, but with proper support this is a win condition.
@@jacksonbranby I mean, Incin's moveset could get gutted for all we know. If it loses moves like Parting Shot, Snarl, and U-turn, then it loses a huge part of what made it good and at that point there are probably better choices of Intimidate Pokemon to use.
You know. Ive loved skeledirge ever since I saw it revealed. Now i can clown on my friends because 1. Not furry bait (or at least easy furry bait lets be honest) 2. Competetively viable in OU
