Rolex is skyrocketing, Cartier is skyrocketing...what happens when even watch homages start to creep up in price? Is that just regular market scarcity? Chopard was established in 1860 as a watch manufacturer and didn’t begin making jewelry until the 1980’s. Today, they make approximately 75,000 timepieces and 75,000 jewelry pieces annually.

I'm new to watch collecting, and I have some watches with reasonable movements which cost multiples of what I spent on my Vostok Komradirskii, but it's that watch that gets all the attention ($80). Best of all, it isn't an homage and there is some actual history to discuss.

Yes but it’s not worth servicing and maintaining. It’s the disposable type item we should be trying to avoid
@roamready9732
@roamready9732 2 года назад
@@matthewpaw4184 you're arguing semantics; a Seiko nh35 was $35 for a movement, ETA 2824 $180-300, Vostok movements $25-35. A service for an ETA 2824-2 should run you $200. Until you touch one of the top 3 or high-end in-house movements they are all "disposable." So whether you like Patek or Vostok, welcome to the hobby.

Such a refreshing channel and topic, love watching these videos, my humble collection consists of a bronze undone on a black leather strap with textured black dial and two Baltic mr01's blue & salmon dials: both with beads of rice bracelets. Not only do I enjoy holding these beautiful time pieces, I enjoy the fact they were affordable. Having less is definitely more in a world where being posessionless is a state of being while surrounded by hype beasts and NPCs. However there is only one thing that cannot be bought.

I got a Tissot T-One auto last year and it was a great buy. It’s clearly Day Date inspired but there are some departures that make it its own thing-different font and number style, date window on the bottom, unique hands. Would love a review on this one and its 80 hour counterpart (whose bracelet is unfortunately way too big).

Rolex will end Rolex. Look at Harley Davidson. They're dying and nobody would have predicted it. Younger riders don't care about the tough guy image Harley spent 70 years cultivating. They're buying Hondas instead because they're better and a fraction of the price. Generation Z isn't going to care that boomers think of Rolex as a status symbol. Making people wait years to get an overpriced watch will eventually backfire. They'll be over it.

My off the beaten path watches: the breguet WG 7097 (same one as Christian’s), and Trilobe Nuit Fantastique that is on order. Steering Chopard towards using exclusively fairmined gold is an initiative driven by co-president Caroline Scheufele. Since she runs the jewelry side of things in chopard, that’s why you don’t see much fairmined gold themed marketing in their watch business. As for Lange, not only do they employ the same finishing techniques from their entry level references to the most complicated and expensive ones, they also assemble each watch twice!

No one is ending Rolex, its still has the ultimate cache in watches. If anything prices eventually normalize, but too many people aspire to get a Roller. Even kids that I didn't even think knew what a Rolex was want one. When they have the cash they'll get one and maybe buy homage before that point but eventually they get one. Rolex prices have skyrocketed simply because they can't keep up with global demand, it's not like they can just dial up a hundred more widgets per day on an assembly line.

I think you guys are spot-on noting people are choosing alternatives to Rolex. For example, last year I wanted to celebrate a major project milestone and thought a simple blue dial OP 41 would be great. Of course, none were available for sale at an AD. I refuse to play the game of paying a premium over retail, so that's a no-go. Looking around, I stumbled across and took a closer look at the Sinn 556i-B. Bought it, love it, and moved on. Sinn got a sale, Rolex lost a sale, and I pocketed the difference of what I would have spent.

I'd even go further and say it's a better watch than a sub for ME personally BECAUSE, the 39.5 mm x 12 case size makes it more wearable, and the movement finishing is superior, and the best part is that it is attainable, AT A DISCOUNT. @@glenking6418 The Rolex AD is a well-established high end family-owned jewelry store 30 minutes from me. I spent a good 2 hours in the store with the sales person looking at all their watch brands and jewelry. Tissot was not one they carried and when I was there my focus was to request the specific watch and begin building a relationship. Had them size and change a battery on an older Gucci watch I own. I feel very good about the experience and never felt any pressure to buy anything else. He gave me a very nice selection of watch books to take with me and said they would order the watch the following Monday. I told him I'd check in with him if I didn't hear from him in a few months since he couldn't guarantee how soon they'd be able to get the watch. Small brands will NOT end Rolex ..
@MPerry-ox9qb
@MPerry-ox9qb 2 года назад
I don’t see small brands ending Rolex’s run. The vast majority of people buying watches want that name recognition that comes with Rolex. Personally I refuse to buy Rolex, because of the way Rolex AD’s do business and I’m not paying inflated prices for one. I’d rather pick up a JLC or Omega. I do like smaller brands myself, but I’m not one to flip watches and have to worry about resale value.
@danielelim8276

The thing is, even if you buy the watch at grey market price, it’s still going to be sold for the same or more than you bought it for in the future.

@@MPerry-ox9qb even if the economy goes down, most of the people that pay attention to this market will mostly remain rich. Overall even a market crash would only drop overall value for second hand luxury watches by maximum 25% and eventually recovering.

@@danielelim8276 that’s good for Rolex owners. I’m not worried about flipping watches, so it doesn’t matter. If I’m buying a watch it’s going to be from an AD and Rolex AD’s are a hard pass.

Omega Aqua Terra, Carl F Burcherer Manero Peripheral and Rolex Sub. They're all great and different in styles. Small brands won't put Rolex out of business. It's a Rolex and I know there's a large group of people that dislike Rolex for one reason or another but, it's a Rolex, they're bad ass and I'll be adding another to my small collection. Just my thing. Enjoy your watch or watches!

Low key if you pay attention big brands are watching micro brands and copying them…for starters let just say the 36MM -39MM size that is flooding the market didn’t come from a luxury brand.

But small brands are not worth anything, which is what drives Patek, Rolex, AP. Different look. I buy into small brands via their historical value, like Smiths, Sturmanskie, Hanhart, as examples. One set of watches are investor watches, the other small set are for connoisseurs of the hobby.

What does “maybe polished a long long time ago” even mean? You mention it twice. Like, does the case material grow back over time? That’s the most BS thing I ever heard from a watch dealer.
@TheoandHarris
@TheoandHarris 2 года назад
Absolutely not BS - it means that, first of all, it may not have been polished. And, if it was, the signs of polishing have faded with time and wear.
@Armoer

@@TheoandHarris ah okay, so it hasn’t been polished before hitting the site of T&H and might contain some scratches and marks of wear?
@cnaarndt

This is absolutely not a BS statement. I recently looked at a '85 5513 at a watch shop. It was an original owner watch serviced from new at that shop. I mentioned to their watchmaker that either it had never been polished or lightly polished once years ago. He told me I had a good eye, as he had personally lightly polished the watch once, 20 years prior. That's what it means!
