The political context of Israel may be set to change forever. Yet as a growing number of Jewish women reject the age-old tradition of the headscarf, a local battle tests Israel s capacity to change.
The headscarf is a defining Jewish tradition, symbolising a woman's marital status. As times move forward, more women are turning to an alternate way of covering their hair without covering themselves - the wig. The controversial issue, "This is a very divisive issue, because women want to be beautiful and look good", has been challenged by Orthodox Jews. The wig in itself has also caused more conflict, "The wig shows quite clearly who you are and what social class you belong to". This argument goes deeper than just a hairstyle - as the women of Israel stand up against tradition and social expectations.

Well, they don't have to dress like nuns. It's okay to be attractive. The hairdo of a married Jewish lady is private, only to be viewed by her husband. This is the same hair she showed to everybody when she was single. It's not the hair itself; but an attitude which keeps some things reserved only for one's spouse.

That's not true. A woman must look presentable and clean but not attractive outside the house. That nonsense is only recent lies and if you look at my great grandmother for example She's covered like a nun and that's hardly far from today. We aren't supposed to change modesty to fit to today's styles of the haughty and showy. Wigs are not modest and will never be. If u knew how men think you'd be afraid walking around even in a tent.

Can marital status not be determined by a ring? A woman can be modest and look or feel beautiful. I understand a Jewish woman wanting to wear a wig vs. a head scarf to a special occasion or daily. It seems that modesty standards vary by different Jewish group. Some focus on not drawing attention, physical modesty, other factors, or a combination. The diversity of human experiences, traditions, cultures, and beliefs is a wonderful and beautiful thing!

To anyone familiar with Jewish law, the strictures placed on men vis-a-vis the man-woman relationship are far more severe than a simple headscarf. It starts from a young age, before marriage, and continues until death. So no, we don't have to wear a head covering once we are married--but the propriety that we are held to on account of our faith is much more difficult to follow. But by all means, continue asking your questions as though you are trying to be fair and open-minded, when you are transparently attempting to portray Judaism as a misogynistic religion.

I also was so interested in historical dress that I studied ancient history, cultural anthropology and world religions specifying on historical dress, fashion, styles from ancient to the late 1900’s. What I found through out my research was & is fascinating! Most countries if you look and study historical dressing you will see it was simply customary for woman to cover their hair it also had practical reasons and protected the hair actually making it healthier & more beautiful...... Even Druid woman that were “medicine woman” as well as your average Druid and celtic female wore head coverings, as well as Ethiopian woman. Egyptians were known for wearing wigs, however the majority of countries from Africa to Europe, Asia, Central, South, and later North America also wore head coverings; From the ancients whom wore gorgeous veils, even the nomadic desert tribes wore beautifully adorned veils..... their are several styles and names for head coverings from ancient times and through out history...... it all stemmed from the practice that anything beautiful, valued and considered holy or important anything cared for that was considered vital to life was always specially covered with exquisitely designed coverings signifying that what was kept underneath was of upmost importance, value, care, respect, beauty and needed to be known that what was underneath NEEDED to be treated with the upmost respect, dignity, and care........ therefore in those days it was viewed as very empowering for a woman to be veiled. Queens had exquisite veils of all sorts of prized materials made for them; the Persian woman had gorgeous veils with traditional embroidery as did most countries in which most times certain embroidery would signify what tribe a person was from..... Gypsies from different countries wore veils now called head scarfs as well, Belly dancers even worse veils, even Brothel workers still wore veils! It signified the importance of a woman..... veils just like modern day name brands also denoted someone’s status in society...... In India till this day woman wear veils with their Salwars, part of their Saris serve as veil/head covering; the ancient Greek woman, the Roman woman and on & on all wore veils; Woman from all parts of the world from poor to middle class and rich all wore veils/head coverings; not wearing a veil or head covering is actually a fairly new concept for even the Edwardian, Victorian eras and even the 1920’s to 40’s wore different head coverings, be they hats, scarfs, this was also the case for men’s “shawls”/coats, like Joseph’s multi colored coat made for him which would have denoted his status amongst his people. So from head wraps & veils in Africa and all over the world to caps, hats, bonnets, scarfs and typical veils this was the norm up until fairly recently....... I have an in depth load of varied information & sources with ancient petroglyphs, paintings, murals, statues, reliefs, carvings, writings, archaeological discoveries, pictures from as old as possible, sketches found, historical advertisements etc for anyone whom is truly interested in knowing and seeing the history of veiling/head covering etc. All that being said my personal opinion on the matter is that head covering and veiling is a beautiful empowering lifestyle practice for a woman whom freely chooses to do so; however I must admit that I’m not fond of the wig aspect and using a wig as a head/hair covering...... I personally believe if you choose to be modest and truly veil and cover your hair as our ancestors did then you will do so the same way in which our ancestors did which was with different veils, scarfs etc. I would never knock a sister whom chooses to wear a wig but if asked MY opinion regarding Jewish woman and the Torah I would have to say I believe it is not really adhering to complete modesty if using a wig instead of truly veiling & protecting the hair. To me MY opinion is that the beauty & empowerment comes from actually truly covering ones hair with veil, head scarf etc. so that no hair in itself is being shown. But that is only MY opinion regarding wigs. This has been a debate for a long time between Rabbis, students, & people. The truth is for Jewish woman the wigs did not become popular until the late 18 then it went out of “style” and then in the 1900’s came back so originally it was a veil, scarf used to cover the head/hair for Jewish woman just as it was for must woman through out the world in the past. Finally it’s MY personal opinion that by rejecting the headscarf or by beginning to reject certain things that have been part of any persons custom/culture & traditions that this how sadly & unfortunately ppl begin loosing their time honored traditions from their ancestors; it starts with rejecting one thing and once that’s acceptable then another and another until eventually sadly most ppl loose something previous, loose their heritage, and before you know you are no different from anyone else whether it’s eventually loosing all sense of modesty or loosing beautiful traditions passed painstakingly down from our ancestors. Our traditions, customs, beliefs, practices passed down from each culture is what makes each magically beautiful & unique. To see that die would be truly sad and another loss & another step away from our connectedness to the source.

I think bits extremely bizarre of women to be wearing a wig over their natural hair since I don’t think it’s part of the observance of Judaism as much as wearing head coverings that is a part of grooming or of showing modesty when it comes to being married. I think it’s extremely weird for women to embrace the idea of wearing wigs over their own hair, when there are those who lose their own hair from a treatment through chemotherapy. .

Jewish women have been wearing wigs for centuries - how is this being presented as a novelty? 19th century rabbis (the Vilna Gaon for instance) didn't like the practice. But it's been absolutely standard in the ultra-Orthodox and part of the Orthodox community this has been standard for DECADES. There's a huge debate over artificial versus real hair wigs, and different chasidic sects have different rules.

I hear about all the things that women must do to be modest or who knows what but i would like to know for sure how men treat these women in marriage. Are they faithful till the end ? Were they themselves virgins on their wedding day since they require virginity from women, i claim that the same should be expected from them and, finally, do they take care of their wife and care for them the way they should till the end ? Because this is really what is at stake, no just men who get their ways no matter what.

As it was explained to me, the hair holds power, and thus the need for the female to cover her hair to subdue her power. Also, the man is gaining necessary power through his marriage to a female, whose spiritual power he gets to benefit from and take as his own. A rabbi must be married, it is his woman who facilitates his access to spiritual power. What I extrapolated from my religious (non orthodox) education. I was raised Jewish. Its called a shaytel. My sister would be the one to cut them in the towns. In the culture.. it seems to act as a head covering and you can usualy tell its a shaytel and it does work exactly as a head covering. However the tradition eminated is one thing, but you should seek to understand the culture first. The shaytels can b stylized very nicely but the more styled and perfect the more it is obvious that it is a shaytel and so it serves the dual purpose to be modern and cover the hair. I dont personally believe its necessary all the time but there is something surely spiritually significant about natural hair and privacy and protection that goes hand in hand with this practice. And i think its deeper than just seeing it as a wig that is incorrect. Its a head covering first and foremost

I know some of them. Don't believe me? Visit my hometown Antwerp in Belgium. You will get the shock of your life!!! Or google some pics. It came indeed from Eastern Europe like you said in the 1800's and the black men clothing with peyos. This is not a Sefaradi, Tamani or Mizrachi custom. Just saying. Nowhere in Jewish Halacha there is an ordonance for women to wear wigs as a headcover and Rav Ovadia Yossef A" S' was strongly opposed. To each their own. If you like it wear it and on the contrary instead of being modest it looks very, very fake and as a result they draw more attention upon them and I can hear my country people talking LOUDLY about them. I do cover my head with a prayer shawl going outside, but not a right-ruling must, but a choice, to cover me in His covering and from the elements and evil in the world. She never gave up her Jewishness and was a member of a local Messianic Synagogue. This particular congregation actually observed Christmas! They called it Yom Yeshua. They just call Easter: Passover & Resurrection! Much like the Baptists or Pentecostals, they do not "Christen" infants. They Baptize professed Born Again believers by full immersion in Yeshua's Name.

How ridiculous. Just another way to repress women by taking away their identity. What’s immodest about showing your hair?

FYI: the only women popularizing this whole wig notion are for the most part Hasidic women. Sephardi jews (jews from Middle East including some from south Europe) DO NOT agree with this. It’s NOT modest let’s me honest about this.

None of these practices are Jewish! - headscraff leave it to Muslims women ... or Hassidic women but they are Ashkenazim ... - wings : Egyptian women wore them in Antiquity Both has NOTHING TO DO with Judaism now ...

I'm an orthodox jew and there isn't any social standing like that, women are respected equally no matter what choice they make with headcoverings or lack there of.
