Why Southern White People Remain Racist

Here is the link to the full video - • Her Family Were Racist...
She was filmed in 1989 as part of a television series that I was making asking baby boomers to reflect back on their upbringings in the 1950s and 1960s. We selected about 200 people to interview at length from thousands and she was selected because she was such a thoughtful and kind person with an understanding, and some sympathy, for those segregationists in her family who she described as having intense fear - a fear of losing control.
All of my career of interviewing thousands of people, I never found anyone as blunt and direct describing what was her people feared so much. As she described it, her family and the South feared any change in the status quo. There were politicians - local, state and national politicians, who publicly stated these fears and fueled the flames.
She makes a statement in this interview which is much debated in the comments. that good people can be racist. She describes people who heard conspiracy theories from the Reconstruction time after the Civil War, people who saw the murder of Emmett Till as "fake news". The concept of integration, of equality and fairness and civil rights was an anathema to her people. It all frightened and they were convinced that they could stop it and return to things as they had been.
I'm sure she would not say today exactly what she said back then with all that has changed and all that has been revealed about those times and her people. I respect her courage for expressing to us what she had witnessed and experienced in the relatives in her own family and those who lived in her town including those who fueled the flames of fear and the racism that came as a result.
if you search the word "segregation" on my RU-vid channel you will find more comments from others with different points of view.
Although I have not shared her name (she has not given me her permission) I want to thank her for sharing her thoughts and feelings with me.
If you found this interview of interest, please support my efforts by clicking the super thanks button below the video screen. That support allows me to continue posting clips from my archives.
Thank you
David Hoffman filmmaker

Both races? We're inundated with many races and the government is a racist organization. They keep track of race so they can award some and punish others. And now they have accepted CRT. CRT calls for the extermination of whites. The South knew all along that if they let up, they'd be gone. All whites will be gone by 2050 unless a movement to prevent it is formed and succeeds.

I've studied American history and the South today isn't anywhere near as racist as it was during Reconstruction and the Jim crow era, 1860's-1960's. You mentioned three examples and, to name a few others, over 3400 Black Americans were lynched, Black Americans were kept out of politics for about a century, there were Black codes, Black voters intimidated at the polls, the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment, poll tests, dozens of race riots during which Black communities were destroyed, reparations that were granted were taken back from Black Americans, Black Americans assaulted or killed, massacres of Black families, opposition to equal rights, violent and deadly paramilitary groups formed against Black Americans, discrimination in business and politics was much worse, excessive force by police against Back Americans was much worse...all that and more, and it was a certain political party that was responsible for, I'd say, about 98% of it. Many others opposed them, but that party held a longstanding dominance in those Southern states. I live in the South now and I don't see anywhere near the racial oppression that once existed here, although there is certainly some racism still in the USA. As someone who has studied the matter for years, it's clear to me that there's been a lot of progress.

Sure on the face of it they're sweet and polite and like to avoid conflict in public, but behind your back it's another story. Like the way they say "well bless your heart" as a way to say "f*** you". They won't be racist to your face but if they have racist attitudes they just won't let on where you can see them. It's not that the north is more or less racist it's just in the north we're more open and direct about everything so if we don't like someone we just tell them "I don't like you." I think k some southerners think their facade of politeness makes them better but I think it just makes them untrustworthy. People don't realize that racism isn't just a problem between white and black people. It's contextual - there's a large amount of unspoken racism between colored cultures and white people - especially in native cultures, where children are born with a multitude of differing skin tones regardless of the particular ancestry of the parents - in native communities, all kids with native blood are supposed to be important, and some natives respond to "Invisible Children" or native children with white skin with awful prejudice and project their own pain and hurt on them in a cycle of pain that's intergenerational. People don't realize that the biggest racism is not committed by members of the rabble, of the public; but the most real and impacting examples of racism come from the home, the way that people treat and think of their own people and pass down ways of thinking to the new generations. Ive had some disturbing conversations with black people who literally just saw me as my skin color and don't listen, just think whatever they want. The prejudice doesn't need to continue - I know this because I myself am an Invisible Child and grew up being treated like garbage because of my skin color even though all I knew was being a native. And the solution, the terms I came to was understanding how deep and pervasive the pain and suffering and trauma was, that those who attempted to raise me, despite all the physical and emotional harm they caused me, were just caught in a cycle - and for reasons I dont really quite understand, or maybe I'm not proud enough to fully acknowledge, I have more ability to end the cycle than them. I was lucky and unlucky enough to grow up without hope for the future, and because of this I wasn't hit so hard by the reality of life and it's horrors - I instead found a reason to forgive them and moved on from them. I don't speak to them anymore because I know my existence makes them feel guilty. And if they don't want to face it, they can at least try to get all the peace they can as they retire from life itself. It's my honest belief that everyone should ideally die in peace, because what comes after can be easier or harder depending on whether we do

It’s a free method of stimulating oppressed people to volunteer to be overseers of other oppressed people. When you are the “superior” class surrounded by people you are exploiting, you live in constant fear of being torn apart by the “rabble”. So, you select one group and elevate them slightly. You tell them that they can one day have what you have if they are loyal enough, that it isn’t possible for the other group because they are fundamentally inferior. But they would come take away your privileges if they are not controlled. Of course it’s all just BS to protect the owners, but it is how these things work.

I grew up being raised by my grandmother who was born into a high society family in uptown New Orleans in 1929. Her family was actually pretty progressive in many ways, her dad insisted that she finish her college education when many other families thought the only reason girls should go to college was to meet their husbands, her dad who owned a business college would stay late and teach black men who were business owners to read, and write and do basic math because he saw people taking advantage of them in their businesses and he thought that was wrong, they were adamantly against the clan, and thought the people who were in it were awful people, but then on the flip side of things, they very much believed in this notion of “separate but equal”. I remember not being able to reconcile these things in my head as a child, and it was very confusing for me because I grew up going to school and being friends with so many black children, and I hated when my grandmother would say that we must love all people, but learn that we have to be separate but equal. I couldn’t even understand what that meant. Later when my sister had biracial children, my grandmother realized that some of her thoughts on this were very wrong, she loved her great grandchildren, and I’m glad that before she passed away she came to understand that many of the things she’d been raised to believe were wrong. Race is still this weird, and multifaceted issue in the south, in many ways people have gotten over some of the old prejudices, but in a lot of ways they haven’t, and I know that doesn’t seem to make any sense, but I feel like you’d have to live here, and grow up in it to understand. I also think it definitely depends on where you are in the south. In SE Louisiana, I think we are more cohesive than we’ve ever been, but it’s not fully gone, and everyone knows the rural areas that are still back in the 1940’s and 50’s with their overt r*cism.

I had many conversations with my mom from NC - wish I had more! She experienced many incidents of racism growing up white, with several black friends in neighboring homes. She would go to the black church and sit outside listening to the music. Born in '36, she couldn't go inside.😮😢

I spent my early life both in the Deep South and the North. Yes, there is racism in the North. But the racism in the South is a totalizing social order. In the South, segregation is in every aspect of life. A black neighborhood might be right next to a white neighborhood. But they won't cross into each other's space, or go to each other's churches.

After reading the comments, and looking at my own experiences, i say this: -: “getting along” is code for everyone knowing their place, not crossing or challenging boundaries, and never expecting different. -: All across the country and world, people have distrust based on fear, religion and historical conflicts. -: In a boiling pot (not melting pot), like New York City, there is no agreement on getting along. It’s not anger based just on race. There’s no hundreds of years of getting along. And who would expect that agreeability in NYC? Compare approximate total of North Carolina (state: 10 million) to just New York City (city: 8 million).

I grew up white in Southern California, born in ‘64, which is known as “Freedom Summer”. Race wasn’t an issue for the most part when we were little. We had neighbors of all colors and my best friend was black. She stopped hanging out with me when we entered middle school because she was told that she would lose all of her black friends if she didn’t. It was horrible for both of us My Mom had me at age 44, so she was born in 1920 in Virginia/Southern Maryland. Her family members were racists . She was very different from them and when she and my Dad moved to California, she changed even more. Being an Air Force family, my parents went to the NCO Club quite often. A black man asked her to dance and she accepted. Even for California it was kind of a big deal. Soon people relaxed and all enjoyed themselves, no matter skin color. She also pioneered the wearing of pants at her civil service job on base. She collected signatures and pointed out that it was unfair to force women to wear dresses only. When I married my husband on my 17th birthday, my great aunt from Virginia did us the honor of attending our wedding. She stayed at our family home, of course. I later found out that she was there when one of our black friends (a fine young man named David) came over just before the wedding to let us know that he’d be there. We were out gathering things for the ceremony. My Mom left him in the living room with her for only a couple of minutes while she got some sodas. When she got back, David had left! My great aunt shrugged when my Mom asked what happened. It turns out that she had said some vile things to him and asked him, “You’re not REALLY coming to the wedding, are you??” David waited until after the wedding to tell us what had happened. He did not attend and I didn’t blame him one bit. It is so sad that people have to be raised in and pass along such ignorance and hatred.😢

Remember the words of Malcolm X regarding the difference between the liberal and conservative. I won't repeat it, but the "conservative" variant of racism exists everywhere. The "liberal" kind exists outside of the South in staggering adundance.

I was raised in the South without notions of racism, but I have run up against hate from black people who were hurt from other white people who are a lot of times just plain cruel. It makes you mad to be falsely accused before you do anything. Even with black friends we hurt each others feelings out of ignorance sometimes.

I'm not from the south, but Black and White people from southern States have talked about growing up and partying in mixed neighborhoods in the 90s. No problem. There is an incident you can read about at Charlie's near Myrtle Beach, attacked by KKK dads in the 1950s. THE REASON was all the White teenagers and Black teenagers hanging out at dance parties. After the attack (there was gunfire but nobody was killed), White teenagers and Black teenagers resumed having their dance parties.

Then or now, you can't change people's hearts. These injustices occurred in the South many, many decades ago. There are few people still alive to provide us with a first-hand account of what actually transpired. To give a little perspective, I was 4 years old when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was ratified by Congress and signed into law by the President -- I am 64 now.

This how you help! When your a baby you notice from a few months old the expressions on adult’s faces. They know if they are negative or positive associations to the expression. You, as an adult and given your rearing environment, are a racist. You can’t get before it to change it, you simply find yourself feeling that way about the world. So if a black guy walks in to a shop you are in with a very young child present, be very aware of your actions, smile and remain positive, even if your feelings are negative. If you do this, institutional racism will be gone when you die. Remember your will find yourself feeling racist emotionally, don’t gather with other corrupted people and believe your racism must be justified because you all feel similar. You will come up with vile rationality to justify what you institutionally are. It must die with you. Be honest and be committed to ridding your culture of this vile injustice.
