Rodney Scott cooked his first whole pig at 11 years old, sealing his fate to become a barbecue pit master. Today, he runs the pit his parents - Roosevelt and Ella - opened in a converted garage in 1972: Scott's BBQ, in Hemingway, South Carolina. Mr. Scott, I am watching this video again and getting somewhat emotional. Years ago, I watched this, or you appeared on the Man Fire Food show and I thought "I can do that." You inspired me to build my own pit and I have done an annual neighborhood BBQ right here in Apex, NC, with a 100 pound hog for 6 years. Had 120+ people in 2019. Thank you Mr. Scott! I wrote to you here 3 years ago and my gratitude continues. So few food establishments care about the product or the customer- it's a franchise for rich folks to invest in. That's all they know, money to make more money. You renew my faith in the American idea, do what you love, and it's hard work, but rewards you every single day. You're inspiring life, family and amazing history are a gift to America and make me proud. Thanks again, someday I hope to get me some Scott's BBQ in person.

This isn’t easy work at all but what I see here is a man who takes pride in what he makes and hasn’t bent to new, modern and much quicker methods that will never be the same quality! "This is BBQ... At least around these parts." Respect. South Texas is where I stay, and although we have many people who love to pit one area against the other, each place has their landmark on BBQ. Each area has their style, and that's the beauty of it. Instead of wondering what area is best, just accept the variety and enjoy. It would be boring if everybody adapted to one style because it was "the best".

Lordy! Lordy! Rodney, you got my mouth watering like a hose!! It's been YEARS since I had good ol Southern BBQ. I used to live in Austin, TX (1962) and there was a BBQ place (actually a small store) on my home from work. It was owned by an old black gentleman, (probably about 75... not near as 'old' now that I'm 76). For 50 Cents/Lb I could get could (and always would) get a couple of pounds of brisket. I could take a bite, just let it sit on my tongue and it would just DISSOLVE and I'd swallow. I dearly hope that Heaven has food that tastes that good. IT WAS DELISHUS!!
