I don't think Subway bread in the UK has a lot of sugar. I'm sure it doesn't. Bread in the USA is beyond disgusting. If you want to avoid that high fructose corn crap, you have to buy Italian or French styled bread. Almost pissed myself laughing in Texas when supermarket opening offers had 'Pan Francis' for a dollar. Baguettes to normal folks.
Gotta be honest, that makes me feel nauseous. I'd rather go to a greasy spoon and get a big brekkie and a cuppa with change from £8!! We ❤️ your vids, keep 'em coming. Stace
Yeah agreed. The price of subway has rocketed, and you can't beat a good old plated brekkie. The big question is full Scottish or full English. 😂. I'm Scottish but gimme the full English anyday but with a tattie scone. 👍
Subway in the UK is always overpriced and underwhelming - so am not surprised the shop was empty. Much better value around for under £8...! But thanks for splashing out on this, so that we don't have to...😂👍
Thank you for battling your way through it on our behalf so we don't waste our money - and bonus points for being brave enough to head out for a fried brekky with a white t shirt on. 😅
I have never been to our local sub, and have no intention of doing so, after finding out they got in trouble for hygiene issues. £8 is a lot of money to spend on something you didn't enjoy. I tend to steer clear of these chains, I prefer to use independent/family run cafes and sandwich shops. I really like it when you try things from your local butchers, farm shops, and bakeries.
I'll stick with my local sandwich shop where you get a large bacon, sausage and egg roll for £6. For £7.50 you get a generous full breakfast (2 bacon, 2 sausages, egg, tomato, mushrooms and beans). For an extra quid you can get Spam and an extra egg. Now I know why so many branches of Subway have closed.
I used to make very similar to these in a little cafe I worked in years ago. The bacon was lovely and crispy and we used proper cheddar cheese and chopped tinned tomatoes, they were served hot as well. We couldn’t make enough of them, they sold really well. Good quality ingredients will always sell well.
The bacon in that looked mostly fat, certainly wouldn’t taste the minimal meat, all the sugar will be from the cheapo bread and ketchup-these are the smallest eggs I’ve seen, were they sparrows eggs?? All in all an expensive disaster of a meal Gareth-I’ve not been to a subway in over 25 years, on this evidence it’ll be another 25 before I think of crossing their threshold….😮
@@billmagowan1492 I like a bit of fat I usually get streaky smoked back and fry it crispy then add tinned tomatoes, but the bacon in that sub was obese and far too underdone. I mean £8 is good money and it deserves better.
There used to be a Subway eight miles from me but they closed during the 2020 lockdowns, I'd have to drive thirty five miles to the nearest one now so I'll definitely give this a miss! Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
Sir-I think you're influence is growing! I thought i'd try the £5 M &S Gastropub pie you tried in a recent vid, and guess what? All sold out! and i tried three times at my local store in Norwich! Keep up the good work!
I used to like Subway, they were great for a lunchtime sandwich, but they have gone away down in quality and up in price. As for being sweet, Subway’s bread had so much sugar in it that it was classed as cake, some time last year, if I remember correctly. That was in Ireland, but I am guessing they use the same recipes in the UK. Add on the processed cheese, thin, fatty bacon, etc, and I think the seagulls are in for a treat.
The things you do to help us out Gaz, wearing a nice clean white T-shirt as well, ripe for the escaping sauce and egg 😝! I've got a couple of Subway customers near me, I repair their coffee machines and sometimes they offer me a sub to take with me. I have to say, I don't know what it is but the stores have this aroma that makes me slightly nauseous. I like a tuna with salad if I do have one. That doesn't look that good for the money, sorry mate. Cheers for the review though Gaz , always appreciate what you do.
You should try their Himalayan Bites. Found Him a lay in in the road. Any sub without Italian Herb & Cheese bread is no sub. But doubt it would have made a difference here.
How can you ruin a basic British breakfast? Over here in parts of Yorkshire some cafes still do what we call a breakfast flatcake (a very large plain teacake/breadbun). You get to choose just what you want on it, from beans, tomatoes, black pudding, sausage, bacon, all the usual. Some of those were outstanding and I think the last one I had was maybe £3. Probably get a bacon butty for £3 now :))). Fatty bacon is ok but it has to be well done.
In Lancashire sandwich shops sometimes do the "Bin Lid Barm" which I think is exactly what you describe and they are filled with more and better quality ingredients and probably half the price of subway.
@@wullaballoo2642 Had the Barms very much the same thing :). Funny how in just a few miles names of foods are different but I will say even as a begrudging Yorkshireman Chorley/Eccles cakes are unmatched, bit of butter or a slither of Cheddar, pot of tea and the world is a better place for a few minutes.
@@wullaballoo2642was just about to say that, Full English on a Bin Lid, my favourite butty shop dont do them anymore. Belly Buster it was called, £4.50 with a hot drink.
They don't do a breakfast sandwich at Subway in Ontario and we have noticed at our local Subway that they are skimping on the ingredients on their regular subs, less meat, less cheese, etc etc. We stopped going to Subway and go to Tim Hortons for their meal deal, a sandwich, a coffee and a donut for around $9 (5 quid).
Reminds me of that film Falling Down with Michael Douglas where he ordered the beefburger in the fast food place. Nothing like the picture they show you. Always the same, except when we went to a Burger King in Budapest. They were great! £8 as well. 😆
Having worked for McDonald's for 30 years I now run a Subway store. To be honest I do like our food, and enjoy most of what I have when on break. Especially that our "bread" is baked daily on site so is always fresh. And we slice tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and peppers daily on site, so again it's fresh unlike the pre packed, pre sliced stuff they use at McD's. Tried the Breakwich once. It is hotter than most of our stuff simply because it has no salad in it. The eggs look terrible in the counter but are actually very nice. BUT, I completely agree. Overpriced and too sweet (caused by the amount of sugar in the bread and the Heinz ketchup). And it's massive pain in the A-hole to make. Stick to a BMT create your own is my advice Gareth!
@@steevobarker581 what charge? Standard amount of american or grated cheese is free. Extra cheese on a footlong is £1. Mozzarella or Monteray Jack cheese is also £1 per footlong as they are "premium" products.
It's a big sandwich to be fair. It just depends where you are and what else there is at the time. You should do another video and find a local cafe that could do something similar and see how the price and taste compares.
@@BaldFoodieGuy fair enough. My goto when it comes to chain breakfast sandwiches is the Gregg's bacon and sausage baguette. Adding on extra bacon for 60p more. Hits the spot and large enough at half the price.
That didn't look the best did Gaz. I've just bought some R B Woodall Cumberland sausage and bacon after seeing your review. Absolutely fantastic and they delivered it to the midlands for me. Thanks Gaz.
This looks like a decline in large chain fast food restaurants imo. Subway has risen their prices to the point of turning me away from their lunch deals now. Burger King charge a fortune and it's costing a pretty decent chunk of money just for a basic meal for 3 people. That's small family sized numbers, why would they spend nearly £50 to goto places like these? It's like they've changed their target audiences to be middle to upper middle-class and think they can get away serving medium to low quality food for those prices.
I'd rather go to Spoons and get the breakfast muffin for about £3.50 tbh I think that's fair value and you get a refillable coffee, tea, or now hot chocolate
Is it just me? Every time I go into a Subway it’s the same thing…..them trying to force you to have it toasted and with cheese! I’m having a turkey breast and ham salad sub for crying out loud! No I don’t want “cheese? toasted?” I want it cold so my lettuce isn’t soggy! I swear they ask you 3 times over! 😂 Sorry rant over! I think £8 for that is way too much by the way!
I tried the Emperor wrap today as you get a free 6inch sub the next day, valid for 7 days. It was £4.59 and was very nice and tasty. I had it toasted so the lettuce and cucumbers were a bit soggy but it was lovely. Still think it's all way overpriced in Subway though. If they were a bit more human with there prices they would get alot more business rather than charging too much. You get a nice pasta/wrap/sandwich with crisps/snacks and a drink for £3.50 in Sainsburys/Tesco so that's much better value if you ask me 🙂
As an ex-pat, lived in Canada since forever, only one choice at Subway, Italian Herb & Cheese Bread, BLT with extra bacon, all the trimmings with hot sauce, mayo & southwest. Last time I was in the UK 2019 it cost about £5.50. Costs about $10.00 CAD and was loverley.... I hate the spread of malls in the UK like the US, only noticed it over the past 15 years but there is no need in the UK, keep it local people.
Im sorry to say that the time has come to make your own at home. Much cheaper and you put what you want inside the baguette. Will subway be with us in 5years? I dont think so with those prices. Karl.
i had the mighty McMuffin with brown sauce over the weekend, really nice defo worth a check, shame it's for a limited time only.. Also have you noticed that subway restaurant's have that Unique smell ! like sweaty feet lol.
Ooh i went to subway for first time in yrs and tried to get the 6 inch of this just last week but they had no eggs left so i got something different-so glad after seeing this!!!
If you freeze an egg in its shell overnight , then in the morning peel it and slice it. You can cook each slice like little mini fried egg. Try it- it works and it's so cute!
Its good you do these videos because now we know what not to buy, the bad ones are just as important as the good ones, just felt sorry for you having to pay out for it apart from it not being very nice it was also robbery without violence. Thanks for this informative video Gaz. 👍
I used to love Subway until they changed the chilli sauce. One thing I've always thought is they have this weird smell to their food. Kinda reminds me of a sandwich factory I used to work in when I was 16. Interesting fact...the sandwiches we made were universal. The same ones that went to Waitrose and M and S were the same ones that went to corner shops, just with different packaging.. Same with the Pizzas which we used to do also.
Oh yeah, we were offered free food at the end of our shift but we never bothered as the cheese was tasteless as were the rest of the ingredients we used which mirrors Subway!
I've only ever had one Subway sandwich. That was in the Strand in London. The problem for me is that I just can't get my mouth around the bread. Anyway, the sandwich here looks very uninspiring and to charge £8 is criminal criminal.
Our local branch is usually quite busy with students as its in a retail unit in the new bus station and they have to walk past on the way to college. I've never bought anything from Subway - did look at the menu once but didn't like the look of the bread in particular. Local sandwich shop does a full English on a big breadcake for £4.
Subway for me has always been underwhelming and overcharging :D, Luckily i have a ton of cafes around me so Subway are right off the radar,Super upload as usual mate :)
Had one years a go total Rubbish. Bacon and sausage just appalling. The bread is/was full of sugar too. There was a ‘thing’ a few years back about their bread actually containing more sugar than some cakes. I’ve not eaten subway for years now and probably won’t again. Always something better not too far from a subway. Brave man! Take it easy mate.
Hi Gareth, once went to a Subway will stay as a 'once' can't even remember what I had but it wasn't nice and was expensive for what it was. Love your video's. Have you thought about doing local cafes and food vans. Down here we have a good roadside cafe called Big Baps and they are too. The bread cakes I mean of course. Keep 'em coming.
Gareth, perhaps Subway use the same overly sweet ketchup I bought at Farm Foods the other day, a brand called Winflo, as Lidl were out of stock of Batts and I'm too tight to pay for a massive bottle of Heinz. Winflo sounds like a slightly detuned Windowlene, for windows that aren't very dirty.
I love a Subway and did know before seeing your video Gareth, that their prices have gotten high. Over £8 is crazy. If you order from Just Eat they are charging over £9 plus delivery 😮. That's too much for what is essentially a sandwich.
A good evening to you Gareth, how are you feeling? After the "Subway Fried Breakfast Baguette of Death😮" The first brave thing you did,a white t-shirt!With all that splodge, your luck held😊Then, the food? arrived 😢Gawd help us,it's almost beyond words, But kack,c**p,dogs breakfast, come to mind . Good things to come from this video. You had a nice drive in the sunshine, and i won't waste my money on that garbage 😅😊for this much thanks. We all need a hero,to face our danger and save us .Another blinding video. Keep it going Cheers 🥂
Occasionally i go into Subway for breakfast. I usually go for Sausage and cheese which is around £5 footlong with drink. In that one its a standard sausage pre chopped in half
used to dream of a subway breakfast, when i was 16 i had the most amazing one, never been able to replicate, the idea very much better than the product , thanks for sharing
I'm amazed that Subway are still in business, much better suited to the American market. As a Cornishman the only fast food I ever buy is a large Cornish pasty if I'm out and about. A hundred times better and cheaper than anything Subway could offer. 😊
I had one the other day mate Didn’t rate it at all, won’t be having another one, better off going to a cafe and getting a bacon and egg butty for £4.50. Great video mate keep em coming
Alright Gaz, long time since lve been to Subway....and won't be going back any time soon. Looked minging and like you say, expensive. Great honest review. Cheers.
Gareth, try the Subway Steak & Cheese salad - £4 or £6 - excellent value - other salads are great too! ie mixed meat/turkey and bacon etc with chilli mayo Mmmmm!
My local breakfast cafe does a "binlid", a very large barmcake, probably about 8 inches in diameter. Relatively expensive at £7.50 but you get a proper breakfast on it, sausages, bacon, black pudding, eggs, mushrooms tomatoes and beans, i don't bother with the beans. Looks much better than whatever that was that Subway served you.
The only breakfast thing american cheese is allowed to even touch is a mcmuffin. Also im sure Subway bread was classed as cake in, I think it was Ireland, due to how much sugar is packed into it.
I had the baller when i went down last time, pepperoni, meatballs, marinara sauce, monteray jack cheese, with added lettuce, gherkin and jalapenos with southwest sauce, i actually enjoyed it. I often find bacon from most chain places disappointing because it always looks like its been microwaved instead of cooked properly, even wetherspoons bacon looks microwaved. Burger king burgers are usually cold by the time you go from the counter to the table because while the lettuce and tomatoes might be fresh because they are kept chilled and slapped on a wafer thin burger it all ends up cold by the time you try and eat it. Plus it's expensive which is why its probably empty.
I make my own Gaz. Cone to my house and do my subway. Lip smacking good and my subway would put a big smile on your face. Thanks so much for reviewing this roll or rattler shambolic roll 😂😂😂😂😂
Went to Canada and there's a Quiznos down the road from where i was, i can never go back to subway after eating there, everything was fresh, had its own taste, amazing sub shop. Subway tries to think its a premium fast food joint, but its not. Its worse than Maccas. Also, would love for you to try the Ed's Diner Pizza, especially the cheese one, from Iceland/Food warehouse. They're surprisingly nice for £1.50!
Someone I work with raves about those subs, I don't think I'll bother now I've seen one. I live in Huddersfield, we have 4 Subways I know of , there could be more, but like you've found, they are a total rip-off. As a comparison, my local cafe is in a small shopping centre, they have had to put their prices up, but a small English breakfast is £4.15p, you get 1 large rasher of good quality bacon, 1 sausage, 1 fried egg, beans, tomatoes a hash brown or mushrooms, a slice of toast and a mug of tea or coffee, and get to sit in and eat it. Sounds more like value for money to me.
£8 ! FYI a low stable gas camping stove is around £25-£30 and a gas bottle which can last a month is about £7 and you can use a regular frying pan or pay extra for a lightweight backpacking type frying pan, then you can cook on the go from boot of your car, ontop of some carbon felt. Or if you're never backpacking (so weight not important) with them a butane cook kit with months of fuel is less than £30. So 4 or 5 uses you've saved all those £8 (!!!) Subway purchases. Comes in handy to store in boot so you've got options to cook or reheat on long car journeys. I've got the lightweight backpacking style but keep a cook kit in the car just in case. Handy to own such stuff as backup just in case.
Maybe consolidate only the eggs & sausage into half of it, then maybe you've got a semi-OK expensive 6-inch? Dunno if it might actually be more or less expensive than just getting a custom 6in sausage & egg though...
Shrinkflation plus inflation means they are bulking these things out with crap. About 2 years ago I was up at Carlisle doing some training for work and every morning I was going into subway for their breakfast sub, a 6inch bacon (proper bacon) sausage (again proper sausages 2 of them) egg and cheese, a regular coffee and a cookie for £2.99 How times have changed, and not for the better.
Great video as usual Gareth, I must admit if you’d have said that was lovely and good value then I would’ve gone down and tried one, however it did look as bad as it no doubt tasted. Will never see me in a Subway, keep going from strength to strength……..
the price of Subway in the UK is disgraceful. in America a Footlong Meatball Marinara costs $5.50 on average which is around £4.30 yet the same Footlong in the UK is over £8(Dominos are the same, almost everything they sell in the UK is smaller and almost double the price).
thats why i prefer brown sauce as tommy sauce can be hit and miss (imho) and it sounds like you have the sauce thats basically red coloured sugar lol , iv never had subway (not been to mcdonalds/kfc for over 10yrs) and i cant see me going anytime soon.
Gareth, for £8 .... I COOK IT MYSELF Proberly that pattie was from ALDI 🤭 TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM... all red complete with flashing lights 💯 but still good review and to be honest i have never been in a subway and from the look 👀 from that thing i'm not missing nowt 😎
