Why The Detective Conan Movies Became More Commercial (Analysis) 

I don't like it when Kaito Kid was present in the movies except movie 10. They always use him as a Shinichi clone and it really annoys me.

The one good thing I can say about the newer ones though is we get some quality animation. In the movie that summarizes the first episode, I loved how they kept the same color palette, but updated the style.

I just saw the Bride of Halloween and the inclusion of the police academy students were excellent. This recent movie was funnier and extremely tight plot left no breaks, I thought it was a huge improvement compared to just blowing up large pieces of infrastructure like dams/pirate ships/trains/underground art museums/buildings. The reasoning admittedly not as great as past decades, but nevertheless was a great watch!

Countdown to Heaven. I recently came to understand the culprit heartbreak over not being able to see Mt. Fuji. See, My house is west facing, and in front of it there's another building, but it was just one floor. I used to enjoy walking in my backyard watching the sky above the building from my vantage point. But the past year they decided to add one more floor to it, blocking that wide scenery of sunset colored sky I used to enjoy so much. And at that moment, I felt that old man's pain.

Yeah i really feel this when i watched the fist of blue sapphire straight from captured in her eyes. Those last third of the fist of blue saphhire seems like sequence from avengers lol. The problem with more bombastic approach to conan movie is that these kind of movies just didn't hit the same emotional beats like the old movies because the story didn't try to explore any personal element to any conan main characters

I've said it before, including on the Detective Conan Wiki and I'll say it again, that it's one hell of a disturbing coincidence that Countdown to Heaven was released months before 9/11 and shares plenty of parallels with it.

man I miss the old movies. You were right when you said movie 9 made people emotional the only emotion I felt during 23 was anger and cringe because of what they did to the plot/animation. Felt like I was watching any other generic anime

I wish they would include more Shiho in these films. She has only appeared twice in canon (not counting disguised version of her by Kaito Kid), so the films are a great way to include her without ruining the story.

Except for Baker street and countdown to heaven, the raven chaser, a quarter of silence and zero the enforcer are my favourite contemporary Conan films.

late comment is late, but my favourite movies are a tie between movie 6 "phantom of baker street" and movie 4 "captured through her eyes", although the latter might just make the top. my second favourite, however, is movie 23 "fist of blue sapphire", so what do i know lol overall i agree, the movies have become more bombastic, scenes are not given much room to breathe like they did in the older movies, and action scenes are so commonplace that they lose some of their impact. the newer movies are just louder in general, it's rare to not have music playing in the background in every scene, whereas older ones often just had ambient sounds, which overall made them feel more laid-back. that said though, i think the newer movies are still good, just in a different way. the plots and central mysteries are still intriguing, characters still have their good moments, the main difference is that there is a lot more over-the-top action, and sometimes it can get exhausting, as if they don't trust the audience to pay attention unless there's an explosion on screen. that's why i really didn't enjoy movie 20 "the darkest nightmare", it had no central mystery and was just non-stop action which is just not what i look for in this series. even then, however, one can argue that the movies can be used as an outlet to show bombastic action, whereas the manga/anime remains more grounded, so both can appeal to different audiences, while remaining true to the core of the genre.

I’ve only watched some of the newer and a couple of the oldest episodes, and I haven’t watched many detective movies except for phantom on baker street(forgot the number), movie 22, and 23. While 22 and 23 were interesting, they didn’t feel better than the average movie. They’re cool, but they don’t have anything special making them a Detective Conan movie besides the characters. For example, phantom on Baker Street had an SAO theme to it while keeping the detective Conan style. Meanwhile, movie 23 didn’t keep the character’s personalities or how they act as much. Kaito Kid didn’t feel like a magician, but rather a cat burglar. I don’t remember him checking if the jewel was Pandora’s Jem either(to ppl who don’t know what that is there’s an anime and manga series called “Magic Kaito 1412.” Basically, the original Kaito Kid, Kuroba Kaito’s father, Kuroba Toichi, was murdered by an organization looking for “Pandora’s Gem,” a gem allowing immortality, due to him stealing jewels. Kaito wants to avenge his father by finding this gem and destroying it, preventing the organization from taking it. As to which organization it is, possibly the black organization, it’s never told). It’s basically what this video explained. The older detective Conan movies feel special to the franchise, while the newer ones just feel like the average action movie.

It’s interresting that you say that the movie about Rey Furuya (Zero the enforcer I think) was very patriotic. I remember that many characters were using themes like “Japan”, “national security”, “save your country”, and so on. I really don’t know why the writters decided this lines. I feel that I miss the sociopolitical context of the movie.

I saw Black Iron Submarine in the cinema and it was my first real exposure to the franchise since I never got into it back in the day. From looking up the series on Wikipedia, the main question I have is “how does it avoid franchise fatigue” after 26 films, 103 manga volumes and 1094 anime episodes?

I think Conan movies should find a balance of making it superheroes like and a compelling mystery. While yes it clearly works in profit so less likely to change but would make it more memorable movies. There is a reason we all got attached to the characters and it wasn't because they could all kickass. Also, while I haven't seen all the movies so far my favourite one is the Last Wizard of the Century or Captured in Her Eyes.

In my point of view, when Detective Conan was dub in english by Funmination aka (Case Closed: One Truth Prevails), it got bad start when air in adult swim and YTV due to the many rating however they release the DVD a few years later when the trial of a quebec group aka Les Bleu Poudres who made a parody of their sketchs on live court!!! When they release the DVD sets, Funmination release three versions of this show. The first sets was short and contains a secret code when enter allows the person to see the bloopers and hidden stuff about the show production making. The two others sets were 5 DVD box for a total of 5 seasons for a 130 episode. The only good thing Funmination did right the Case Closed were the 6 movies after that they lose their right to Viz Media who were in charge of the Manga version of the Case Closed. So in short, finding the right person for the dub who have been better from the start. Here a fact: Countdown to Heaven the firth movie of the series make reference to the twin tower of the World Trader in America back in 2001.

Im starting to get sad to hear that. I am a big fan of Conan and watched it since i was young. Im re-watching it rn, i am at ep..175 now. The old episodes are so much different then the new ones.. its amazing. Im scared for conan to end one day, but also it should at one point. With all these characters just adding and adding its starting to get confusing. Ahh im rambeling. Im just.. sad for conan to take this commercial kind of road. And i feel like its dying. I know just a few people who know what this anime is. They never bothered to watch it.

Kodama Kenji directed the first 7 films with Kouchi Kazunari as the screen writer for all of them except 6. Yamamoto directed film 8 to 14. Kouchi Kazunari was the screen writer for all of them except 10 and 11. Kouchi was never a director. Even when Shizuno started directing, Kouchi was still pulling relatively decent scripts when Shizuno went off the rails with his bakudan! bakudan! and more bakudan! Yamamoto is at blame here. Kodama - Kazunari combo was peerless. They created so many classics for the DC series, both films and TV. Yamamoto, even when he was directing the weekly episodes, could not replicate the cut-throat cutting style Kodama had. Despite Kouchi was still writing the script, the directorial choices by Yamamoto, who is middle of the road and plays safe all the time, did a lot damage to the "middle" films. But I think Yamamoto stayed on the Production Team not just because Kodama was getting up there with his age and Kouchi Kazunari passed away later, the Production Committee prefers someone who doesn't take a lot of risks. They want a steady flow of revenue, not necessarily creative choices that may or may not resonate with the audience. At the risk of misinforming the audience, maybe a re-edit is warranted.

Just watched this video today. Really insightful. Realized that I am simping DC hard and did not realize the shift of the movies. DC is my favorite anime of all time. 😁

I have not seen all of the movies, but I enjoyed The Last Wizard of the Century and Captured in Her Eyes. I don't know how to feel about Ran's memory loss in Captured in Her Eyes (I don't hate it though) but Odagiri Toshiro is just way too cool of a character. The ending scene is also really cool.

You have a point there, the newer episodes are more easily predictable as far as finding the culprit goes in those cases, but then again this might be because watching Conan for a long time does that to you so who knows /shrug The newer moves are cool, the music is great, animations are great, but the plot is getting repetitive XD

i feel like they became more fan service then actual good plot, not really complaining though. however, the older movies will remain superior

Case is good and I don't think people being too much out of character. I think it would have been the case with Sonoko who was like irritated by kids but in movies she would invite everyone herself. The main problem I have is the ending scene of movies that became worse and worse after movie 15. Personally I think that the answer of question why Gin could not kill Conan even after using a helicopter lies in his mentality. Edit : I forgot that I feel like that for movie 5 and 13 Gin's character was good and it showed its mysteriousness as it shows in episodes. But in movie 20, they showed his absolute madness, which I feel like is legit and more accurate especially how he clicked the button for bomb for a few times then smashed it and asked Korn and Chianti to shoot down the giant wheel(essentially showing how they work just like they were hunting conan in movie 13 and hunting sonoko in movie 5 mistaking her for Miyano).

Damn it I wish the old dub made it to the 9th movie and the episodes proceeding it the 9th movie sounds amazing for fans of Kogoro/Richard Mouri/Moore

I don’t know. I always thought these movies have always been commercial, almost Hollywood-like, even the older ones. Not that that’s a bad thing, after all they got a bigger budget. Might as well do something with it. I find them a nice change of pace from the main story, which honestly seems to drag on forever with little developments as of late. Least the movie plots goes SOMEWHERE. They serve decent stand alone stories if nothing else.

I gotta be honest with you, the Phantom of Baker Street is the movie I'm most critical of in terms of how it's written, old or new. I'd probably rank it above Zero the Enforcer for purely personal reasons, but that has nothing to do with that movie's actual quality. Phantom of Baker Street screws up it's own messaging. One could say it was mistake to begin with Japanese society pressuring kids follow whatever career their parents had in a fictional universe where all the Young Adult protagonists seems to have inherited whatever their talent is from one or both of their parents. One could have ignored that watching this movie as a stand alone, except that it draws attention to it, this of all the movies is the only one where Yusaku plays a role, and then it continues with the film's original characters. And then the final twist that the one kid in the game was really the AI the whole time erasing the character development we thought we were seeing really bugs me, I wasn't putting too much thought into those other issues on my initial viewing, but then that reveal brought the film down instantly. So it's Plot may technically have less holes then the modern exposition happy action movies, but the actual theming is incoherent which I care about far more, even in a "reasoning detective drama". So for that reason movies like Sunflowers, Nightmare, Blue Sapphire and the Lupin crossover are all in my opinion better written no mater how implausible their over the top speckle set pieces are. So Bakerstreet is still a fun movie, I'll probably re-watch it many times in the future. But it's one of the last ones I'd recommend to a newcomer.

I most of the time I rewatch the old movies(1-8). One time I tried to rewatch the 23rd movie but I was really getting bored. This has always happend to me in those movies(9-24) but I do not get bored while watching the other movies(1-8)

You make it sounds like movie 9 was the last one written by Kazunari Kouchi but it's not. He also didn't quite write all the first 9 movies, Phantom of Baker street was someone which explains why it was so bad.

Being nearly NTR'd by Kaito.. The idea of that is disgusting lol Ran is loyal af and just having a scene like that is just 🤡 Honestly it would be much better if Kaito Kid was used sparingly, without interacting with Ran at all (honestly just have him with his love interest) Ran did know that it was Kaito so it wouldn't have happened anyways. Shinichi was full on screaming the "HELP ME! HELP ME!!" meme and "Why are we here? Just to suffer..." 😂 Ran becoming a detective & lawyer that surpasses even her parents while going full Daredevil on criminals now THAT is a movie I'd love to see and would sell

I like to watch things in english sub because it's just easier to pay attention for me. However, my only judgement was on the first 6 films. The other films I loved and watched, which I now realize was just because it had badass scenes. However, the films I connected the most to the actual anime or emotion wise was the first 6. The other ones were kind of like nowadays hollywood movies, interesting only if you watch it for the action, but not really meaningful otherwise.

The newer movies have a better case in terms of mystery but the ending is always too unrealistic.

But Ghosho Aoyoma continued detective conan bcz the first movie was hit. And this series is continued till now bcz of the movies. So, the move successfull the more better. Also the in this video you compared a canon episode to a modern filler episode. Which is not worth it. Filler episodes are not worth being compared to cannon ones. The cannon episodes of detective conan has not lose any quality.

Lets see if movie 24 has got anything. Personally I don't think it will have a great ending like always. Edit : Its not bad, it went much more than my expectations.

Well it works, the recent movies as Dubbed by Bangzoom are what got me into Conan. But I've now watched countless episodes from multiple eras, several OVAs and 15 movies annual movies, plus the Lupin movie and Episode One. I've watched Conan subbed, I've watched both official Dub casts and fandubbed content. I'm not really sympathetic to complaining that the movies are more action oriented. The mysteries usually still seem perfectly logical to me. And I've never judged the Mystery genre solely on how well thought out it is either. The series even in it's Golden age still relied on a lot of coincidences and contrivances, I imagine there is a good chunk of the original generation of fans who feel the show jumped the shark the moment it's first Arc villain just so happened to be an old friend of the main character's mom,. If I'd gotten into Conan more chronologically, I'd recall how the second episode set up Ran as being the brawn of this operation and be constantly disappointed how rarely that set up actually pays off, on the big screen not seeing till movie 4. So you can mock the over the top spectacle of movie 13 all you want, but I was practically brought to tears when Ran dodged that bullet.
