I always wonder why Detective Conan was not popular in the west. It's big here in the Philippines and it's still selling well in Japan as evidenced by the annual movie releases which apparently outsold Avengers Endgame in Japan. I grew up with this anime and I feel like it's one of those series that I don't want to end because it's episodic and very educational. But I do want to see him back as Shinichi. Doraemon and DC are the anime that fulfilled my childhood and teen years. I'm currently rewatching all the episodes and I'm falling in love with this series once again. Truly a masterpiece.

I remember an episode somewhere around the 160-170 range where the kids and the professor go into the prof's aunt's old manor where they try to solve a bunch of sun/moon/star puzzles that are suppose to represent hiragana characters. Imagine you're the localizing team trying to translate that for a western audience. I think having a lot of cultural aspects of the show not being able to be fully appreciated from a western lens was the reason it never got popular in the west.

Well, here in Germany Detective Conan was dubbed from 2002 til 2007, and after so much pressure/support by the fans, the series finally picked up again in 2018. There are now 400 episodes dubbed, and it's pretty good!. It's gotten quite a cult following, and I'm glad that there are also people overseas who appreciate Aoyama's masterpiece. I think a lot of the established audience has probably stuck around, to be honest? Whereas a lot of newer anime fans find anything remotely long to be too much of a commitment, a lot of the time (even getting someone to watch a series that pushes 100 episodes is a difficult task). So unfortunately, I think by virtue of that stipulation alone, a lot of people miss out on it.

Conan is an all-time favorite of mine! Whenever my friends go to Japan, they take pics of all the Detective Conan merch and stuff to show me. I started Conan from the pilot, and I remember being shocked by the amount of blood and gore they were able to get in, in the guise of the Murder Mystery genre. But what I REALLY remember the first Volume I owned. It was Vol. 20 - the Magic Lover's case. I saw it had Kaitou Kid content I hadn't seen before, so I bought it. And it had a complete mystery featuring him... And then the first, unsolved half of a Conan mystery at the tail end of the volume. Of course, I wanted to know what happened next! Several years later, and I owned +50 volumes of the manga and have read 900 or so chapters of the series, in addition to watching the Movies and OVAs. I was happy to hear you express the sentiment that Detective Conan really is the most iconic, incredible detective of our generation. I stan Kudo Shinichi so hard! I love the voice acting cast as well. And the musical score. And how All Out the movies get - I thought it was hilarious the 23rd Conan movie did better in Japan than Avengers Endgame. Ha!

Really appreciate this review, it's the first review I've seen that actually focuses on the meat of the series, the actual crime solving. I'm not a big anime fan, but I am a mystery fan, and Conan has THE best who-done-its I've ever seen on TV. Few shows put as much love and thought into it's cases as this show does, and no other goes through as much trouble to make cases solvable by the viewer, no matter how complicated . Unfortunately in the west it seems to sit in limbo between people who would never give the show a shot, since it looks like just some kid's anime, and anime fans who seem too interested in plot developments between Shinichi and the black organization, or Shinichi and Ran. I've never seen a review on youtube focus as much on the cases as they have the overarching plot, which is just a device that gives some occasional intrigue and tension in between cases This review was just really well done and on point, I hope more people get to see it. I especially loved learning more about Gosho Aoyama, his commitment to his work is really inspiring.

The tense tea party episodes was the only case I ever figured out before Conan, (because I'm a tea snob), and as someone who loves mystery and isn't bad at figuring out culprits in western crime dramas, that says so much to me about how clever Aoyama is with crafting these cases. I love Detective Conan for the intensely smart tricks, the great overarching plot, and the loveable recurring characters. I personally love watching any episode with Heiji, Takagi, or Kaitou Kid, Not to menton Shuichi and Bourbon. 900 episodes and countless movies in, I'm still so excited every time I watch the show.

Cannot understand how this series is not well known in the west. When I was young, this series in Algeria and other arab countries was as big as in Japan. I remember when when I used to go home after school and watch it with my parents and siblings, parents seemed to really enjoy it as much as I did. The arabic adaptation was so good, Kogoro became a meme and the first arabic opening was legendary. We were eagerly waiting as to when he tells Ran the truth or when he regains his true form, but little did we know. I feels blessed to have had to watch this series and others such as Hunter x Hunter 1999 when I was young. Those are some memorable moments.

This was the show that got me hardcore into anime as well. I casually watched Sailor Moon as a middle school kid, but never went beyond that. My brother was a DBZ fanatic, but it didn't do anything for me. So I aged on into high school, never really giving anime much of a second thought. One night, after I had gone to bed, my brother was in the next room watching the TV too loudly. I barged in and asked him to turn it down. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the screen. Some guy impaled to a wall with a katana. I ask him, "What are you watching anyway? Looks like a horror flick." My brother goes, "No, no. You'll like this. You like detective stories, right? Like Sherlock Holmes and stuff?" I was a pretty big mystery fan. Ever since reading my first Nancy Drew in 5th grade. That led to Poirot and Sherlock before too long. So I eyed him cautiously. "Yeah. Why?" "This is like a Sherlock thing. He's a detective." "... that little kid?" "He's not actually a kid. He's a teenager. He just looks like a kid. Look, it's complicated. Sit down and watch and if you like it, I'll take you back to the first episode." And so I sat. And within minutes, was hooked. We were watching the dub at the time. But I started borrowing his DVDs and eventually had to switch to subs just because they had stopped dubbing it but I just couldn't stop watching. I was already too invested. Next thing I know, I'm watching other anime shows. Inuyasha. Yu Yu Hakusho. Now I'm super into Black Clover, MHA, and Re:Zero. And it's pretty much all I watch anymore. But Detective Conan continues to be my first love. The show that got me hooked on the art form. And the one I come back to again and again. We (hubby and I) recently started rewatching the series from Episode 1. We're in the early 200s already. But it's still just as enjoyable as the first time around. :)

You know what I love most about Detective Conan? That I got to learn so much about Japan. Conan with his friends or with Ran & Mouri travel all around Japan, the animation beautifully shows many historical places where characters tell about the place and the history. Although I'm not sure every information is accurate but it's still pretty great knowing something. I doubt there are other anime that does that. And not just the geography of Japan but also the people and the society norms. And when Conan reveals the secrets to tricks used in murders involving chemistry, physical or sometimes medical elements, it's so fun to learn that. Really Crime Procedurals shows of any country can tell you a lot about the culture of the country, i feel that and that's why it's my fav genre. I can probably blab a lot more but At last i can only say that it's been an honour to watch DC and to have felt closer to the culture of Japan. It's hard to keep something running for so long and do it weekly and for it to be from mystery genre, it's really difficult. So for the dedication of the creators, writers, animators, etc., I'm determined to watch DC, as long as I can.

When I started watching anime, Detective Conan was among the first I got into outside of what was shown on Danish television at the time. After all, I was new to the whole internet thing as I had just gotten my own computer and I could only really figure out how to look up anime on RU-vid (since heck, I had just started learning English), so I'd look up titles from anime I had seen on TV or manga I had read to see if anime adaptations existed. Tokyo Mew Mew, Yu-Gi-Oh, Shaman King, etc. being among them. As I got better at English and my thirst for anime grew I embarked on the adventure. :D I have been watching the anime for about 13 years now. I don't remember when exactly I started reading the series as I'd pull down the manga from the shelves in the library whenever I got the chance. I even got my hands on volume 16 amongst other manga volumes from a handful of different manga series when they sold off retired books to make room for new books when moving the library to a more central location. So I have 2 volume 16s in Danish the old worn out from the library and one I bought new from a book store. I don't want to get rid of either of them. Unfortunately they no longer translate the manga to Danish, so the old volumes are quite hard to come by. :) Even if Detective Conan were to continue for another 20 years, I'll be there watching it until the end. No matter how bittersweet that feeling is going to be. If I had to pick a favorite filler case on the top of my head, it would have to be the one with the ventriloquist (episodes 806-807).

Weird comment 6 months after this video went up but I just now saw this video and oh my god. You put to words what I couldn't when trying to explain to my friends why this series is so amazing. Conan was my first manga ever. (Not my first anime, that was Moomin Tanoshii no Ikka but I didn't know it was an anime. I was like 3, gimme a break) I saw the 2nd volume of it in the supermarket and I asked my mom to buy it for me. She did, she didnt even check the age recommendation, which was 12. I was 11, going on 12 later that year and if mom had known what the manga is actually about... She woud not had let me read it. I asked her this some time ago actually and showed her that same volume she got for me. She was shocked but said that I turned out ok regardless so it's fine. xD I went back by myself to buy the 1st volume and I have all 80-something volumes of the Finnish run of the manga. I can't overstate how devastated I was when it got discontinued.. Thank god for the internet. I'm still here, 15 years later at 27 years old and still completely in love with this series. I honestly don't think any other series compares in how it captivates my attention so completely. I'm very invested in the characters and I love the rare Actual Plot episodes the most. Yall don't know slow burn romance until you read Detective Conan. It might be my Aspergers talking out of my ass but no other series of manga or anime has come even close being as engaging as Conan, for me. Every time my friend visits Japan, she brings me Conan merch back as a souvenier and I just have so much Conan junk everywhere and moms getting annoyed. My friend moved to Japan recently so if I get to visit, we're definetly gonna have to visit some of the hotspots :3 Anyway, a longass rant later, thank you for making this video. Now I can just link this when my words fail in me when trying to express how cool Conan is.

Awesome review! Those episodes you mentioned and showed were some of my favourites. My most favourite being the Sherlock Holmes case where Heiji finds out about Conan being Kudo. I’m currently on episode 428 feeling a bit scared on what happens next as Ran mentioned a new Male student who looked like a Black Organisation member who’s in a coma. So yeah scared. Recently I’ve been trying to get a friend of mine into Detective Conan and while this video would be great to share with her, it has way too many spoilers that she won’t appreciate. But I appreciate, I appreciate loads. Best Detective Conan review ever as everyone else are just idiots who don’t know what they’re talking about. ❤️DETECTIVE CONAN RULES!

Call me crazy, but I actually think Kogoro is just about as smart as Shinichi is, he's just really brazen. Shinichi is less arrogant, usually more hesitant to call a case solved and is also a lot more perceptive. Kogoro often jumps to conclusions with minimal evidence, and that's really the main flaw in his approach. Shinichi is definitely a better overall detective, but when it comes to problem solving skills, as long as they are equipped with the same complete knowledge of the case, Mori can usually come to the correct conclusion as well. If he was more willing to take his time with each mystery and be more observant of his surroundings, he could probably rival Shinichi.

ran's hair is fiction
@ReneandMae
@ReneandMae 4 года назад
@@8geoking184 If you ever read the first couple volumes of the manga, you might remember when her hair did not have that one long spike/horn on her forehead. Aoyama's art style evolved as he was developing the looks of the characters in the early chapters. Ran's hair spike is meant to represent her bangs being styled up, then flipped over to one side. You can find fan-arts where someone has tried to draw Ran in realism style, to see this. Unfortunately, over the years, Aoyama has let Ran's spike/horn travel all over her head, depending on the scene. I'd love to see him tame that thing once and for all. I would also love to see his style return to how the characters looked in the manga/anime after the first couple of years, where his style was cleaned up a bit, Conan and the Detective Boys weren't quite so chibi-fied, but Conan still had that adorable, quintessential look. His current manga style is still incredibly detailed, but it has a "harder" look, and the kids look older. In the anime, it's even more pronounced. Conan looks older, but Shinichi looks younger than he did in the early seasons.

Here in germany, Conan is huge with more than 400 dubbed episodes, all movies getting home releases shortly after the japanese home release and current new chapters from shonen sunday getting officially translated and released only days after the magazine coming out in japan. Also, our dub is not westernized at all, all names are left japanese and they really paid attention to properly pronouncing them, like for Shinichi Kudo, westerners would often pronounce his last name with a long "u" and a short "o", but in our dub they pronouce it the japanese way, meaning a short "u" and emphasis on the "o". I'm really thankful that our anime localzation team and our publisher of the manga put as much effort and love into it as Aoyama does in drawing Conan. That's probably one of the factors why the shy and reserved Aoyama even came to visit us and met with the german fans, answered questions and gave autographs. When Aoyama was hospitalized a few years ago, I and a lot of other german fans drew get-well postcards and our manga publisher took them straight to his hospital bed. I think no other country outside of japan has such an amazing author-fan-publisher relationship with Detective Conan.

I love CC/DC 'cuz of how incredibly slice-of-life/realistic the sequences of the episodes are. Many of the episodes take place during field trips, where people need to go to bathrooms, or lack lunch money, or talk about just... real, mundane stuff. And the thrill of the crimes takes place WITHIN, rather ON TOP OF, the settings. Many animes will go over mundane/realistic/slice-of-life events, too. I'm sure there's a filler episode of Bleach somewhere where on some field trip, a Hollow attacks people, and Ichigo has to save the day. This is an example of a thrilling sequence of events happening ON TOP OF a mundane setting. Meanwhile, CC/DC has thrills happening WITHIN mundane events. Hypothetically, keeping the field-trip example, CC/DC might show an episode where a kid goes to a vending-machine on a field-trip, and ends up finding razors in the chip bag he gets, after injecting the 1.25 -- or however much vending machines require in this economy --, and soon it turns into a whole mystery about who's been putting razors in the chip bags in the vending machines. CC/DC isn't the only anime or story that has ever done this, but I like stories that do, so... I like DC/CC. I like how grounded it is, whilst also still full of crazy criminals, as well as the theatrical Kuroba Kaitou (or, Phantom Thief Kid). It shows how thrilling and intense a fiction story can be, WITHOUT being fantasy. (I mean... yeah... there is the turn-into-a-kid Pill, but... meh.) Much like scooby-doo, everything in CC/DC comes to some sort of "it was actually this dude doing this and it's all grounded and rational", rather than anything supernatural, and I like exploring the different ways in which a series can be thrilling without being fantasy.

This is a genuinely well-made video, and, as a decently active member of the English part of the fandom, I would totally say that this video is a perfect beginning point for people getting into the series. Like I loved the episodic nature of it but eventually, I just got fatigued. I told myself that I wouldn't actively keep up with it until it was finished then I could just binge all the plot-relevant stuff and maybe a few episodic stories on the way but recently I just got this urge to start looking at it again. Looking at clips, maybe watching a movie or two, and it's easy to see why this show captured my attention for so long. It's the only long-running shounen show that I actually like and I'm so glad that you chose to give it the recognition it deserves I just hope it ends soon because as much as I like it I just have to know how it all ends.
