I had the privilege to visit several orthodox churches in Russia in 1995 on a school trip. The first time I stood in front of an icon wall was an incredibly intense experience. At that time I was not a spiritual person, but my path since has been influenced by those powerful images. I have painted in all the media you mention as well as watercolor. I really can’t imagine using acrylic and creating powerful and sacred images, it just… has no soul.

With the help of this video now I have some info on how to paint using egg tempera. The paint was quite amazing and the artist was so pro in using the brushes and the paint. keep up the good work and thank you for giving some great idea and techniques for me to use in my painting project.

Enjoyed your video. I use kolinsky brushes for oil painting. They are especially important when doing glazing & impasto. I keep my brushes separate. Meaning oils for oils, Acrylic for acrylics and so on.

Thank you for sharing your videos. It is fascinating to see that you use fingers to do hatching. I love painting with caseine tempera. But acrylic paints I tried were much more viscose. Assuming, viscosity helps to keeps the paint together. We can put it aside for one year and it could still be used. But viscosity changes how the paint behaves. If we drop ink on a kittchen paper, it soaks the ink immediately. We can see how color spreads in the paper. Now, if we put a portion of viscose paint on the kittchen paper, we can observe that the paper cannot soak the paint. We need to thin the paint to enable capilarity. Same happens in a brush. It cannot soak the paint if it is too viscose. To me the brush feels like I am using a soft-flexible palette knive. If I start to dilute the paint to get capillarity working, it seems to me that too much water is needed to get some acrylics fluid. The brush could soak it, but the color lost too much of its strength. Shopping for acrylic paints, often I cannot find information about how much water is needed to get it fluid. So I end up try different brands and test the colors. This month I try low viscosity acrylic paints. It seems to be the best match. They are fluid, and the brush can soak them like watercolor or tempera paint. Please keep it up. Thank you for your inspiring videos.

Thank you, it is hard finding good info on egg tempera. I have a question, as I do not want to make my own gesso, I was wondering if anyone has tried egg tempera on watercolorground. Would it work as it is absorbant? I'm going to try Daniel Smith watercolorground on a sealed and gessoed mdf panel! I will be using Sennelier Egg tempera. Thanks, cheers

I'm just stuck on the supplies needed to even start something like this. I'd love to paint a large wooden wardrobe. I think it would serve as a good base, but all the supplies required to paint in this fashion are totally outside of my experience level

Αν κατάλαβα καλά εφόσον τα υλικά πρέπει να είναι συμβατά μεταξύ τους, είναι εντελώς λάθος η αυγοτεμπερα σε στοκαρισμενη με ακρυλικό στόκο επιφάνεια; Πρακτικά αυτό τί σημαίνει; Ότι δεν στρώνει σωστά το χρώμα ή τί άλλο;

Πολύ ωραίο βίντεο. Έχω μια ερώτηση, κρατάει αυγοτέμπερα πάνω στο χρυσό;;; Σ'ένα μάθημα αγιογραφίας που πήγα μας έμαθαν οτι μπορούμε να ζωγραφίζουμε μόνο με ακρυλικά στο χρυσό, αλλιώς θα ξεφλουδίζει με τον καιρό. Βλέπω στο βίντεο όμως το αντίθετο.
