After losing another Grammy for best rap album, the controversy between Travis Scott and the Grammys has never been worse, but what this tells us about the award show and their problems with hip hop as a whole will shock you...
The clip of Killer Mike getting arrested doesn’t help. Yeah sure Trav fans will use the optics of the situation to poke fun at him. But it proves a point Grammys dgaf about rap.
I mean it’s not like they never show it in the main broadcast ever, hell it was showed in last year’s show as well, it’s just that this year was the year they decided not to put it in the main show, still strange nonetheless
They didn’t broadcast it because they knew KM was going to win and KM doesn’t have enough star power to warrant him being on the telecast. It sucks but that’s how producers think. Had Travis won a big rap category they likely would’ve broadcast the category because he’s a big star
@@Craftmaster3 one of the most viewed videos on the Grammy RU-vid channel is Cardi B’a acceptance speech for winning Best Rap Album. It was definitely televised.
When The Weeknd made the ALBUM OF THE YEAR with After Hours, he was snubbed so hard at Grammys. Metro Boomin made a banger of album with multiple hits and was one of the producers of Spiderman animation sequel, but he lost in Producer of the Year to Taylor's producer.
i'm not mad that Travis lost to Killer Mike, i'm literally so frustrated by the fact that the Grammys made the worst Taylor Swift album with absolutely mediocre songs win AOTY against SZA who had the best mainstream r&b album in years
yeah but taylor is the number one mosted listened to artist on spotify. If she didn't win album of the year everytime she dropped one, every swiftie would boycott the grammies.
the grammies are not even a respectable award anymore in general. all they do is give it to who will lose them the least viewers because it all boils down to sponserships, ad revenue, and money.
I feel like he deserved it more in Astroworld in 2019 than here with Utopia imo. Astroworld losing to Cardi B was more unfair since that album actually sucked
10000% . I feel most people who are crying about this album not getting a Grammy are TS Stan’s. And this is coming from someone who was following him HEAVY back in the Owl Pharaoh - Astroworld days.
@@helptheresacockroachinmyba1939 to u that is. If u see it from an unbiased perspective then heroes and villains or utopia would be the only two which were supposed to win grammys.
Killer Mike's Album was a good album, I am sure even Nas a goat mcee will appreciate losing the Grammy to an actual good Rap conceptual album. Lyricists won this years Grammy. Utopia was good to especially sonically.
I think that’s the problem with today’s music. The only way music can progress is by combining lyrics and vocals as an instrument and the way the tracks sound sonically. I will admit Travis does have vagueness regarding his lyrics, the production alone should have won the award. Tired of lyricists thinking that’s what comprises good music. Still ground to be broken.
@@bigstevedzn2353 The award was about “Rap" not “Instrumentals". Rap is originally known for it's messages. When you talk about Rap you think of guys like 2Pac that spoke of the ills in the society and encouraged the black youth to strive for better, guys like Nas Lupe fiasco Jay Z Kendrick Lamar J Cole Lil Wayne Eminem Biggie Big L Big Pun 50 Cent and even Drake are the one's that define Hip-hop and Rap. Without Kanye West Travis Scott would never be where he is today. The Grammys made a wise decision and handed the award to an actual Rap album. They should maybe create another award for popular music like trap and drill category.
@@7sneves I think that is the perfect compromise. The Grammies are too all encompassing anyways. But then again the more categories that are created the less effect winning a Grammy becomes. Man I hate labels and the Grammies.
Jid being put on screen when he says "more deserving rappers" is so true, the forever story really shouldn't have been slept on the way it was by them 5:55
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266well she certainly was actually rapping on it., unlike a more pop oriented record. She was shifting between vocals & rapping similar to how Drake, Ye, & Andre would all incorporate later on similarly
That’s crazy because he wasn’t even nominated for melodic rap category or best album of the year like other rap or hip hop artist were and it’s crazy because sza win Grammies with the help of travis production on her album and his Ad libs but yet he only gets nominated for one category in one section this wasn’t a debate of wether his album was better than killer mikes it was a snub because they didn’t give him the same chance as killer mikes album to win any Grammy at all the unfair advantage killer mikes album had compared to the one category section they gave Travis is the snub not the albums themselves nobody is denying killer make made a solid good album but it’s stupid if you don’t think the Grammies snubbed Travis Scott this year again
@@iDewThis4Yu That’s funny because there’s been multiple artist like Nicki Minaj, Latto etc who get placed in categories that aren’t even what their music represents so your Trynna tell me Nicki’s label just does that behind her back without her finding out it’s them and then she decides to choose to not do anything about it. You think Travis’s label would do this and he’d be like that’s fine this some bs your spouting
Understand where you’re coming from, but this is still disrespectful to killer mike to even make this video. He had a great album and just because it wasn’t your number one pick, that doesn’t mean someone else was robbed. If we can agree that killer mike made a great album, how was anyone robbed, or snubbed? A great album beat a great album.
mate he legit says no disrespect to him and loved the album, you should realise the award isn't just for the best rap performance and numbers wise doesn't contend with the others
@@matthewchidiac5948do you know in the creation and the voting of the albums they are only supposed to vote on the art. It's album of the year. Not video of the year. Sales of the year. Sometimes popularity and previous works might come into play for someone to vote for the person but how many sales you have has never been a priority or even officially considered at the Grammys.
This one isn’t even in the same realm as bad because Killer Mike is a legend who made a pretty damn good album. But I genuinely think this was on purpose because now everyone is talking about the Grammy’s now and it’s now a hot topic
@@LondonbabyCamzhe is one half of one of the best hiphop duos ever and kept ATL’s lyrical side alive for years while trap took over. He is definitely a legend

Lyricists won. The underdog won, People always complained about it being a popularity contest and now when a smaller artist with a great album is finally recognized they get mad smh
'for once it was real hiphop that won' then howecome every kendrick album wins when he is considered 'real rap' plus nas winning recently too, AND when Tyler won it with call me if you get lost no one was complaining that its not real 'hip-hop'?
I mean…. It did beat out 50 cent get rich or die trying. And by the metric killer Mike won with regarding pure rap, the majority of speakerboxx/the love below is not traditional rap, therefore it was kinda half hearted. (I’m also saying this as a black Travis Scott fan btw)
@@OnDaLowWidIt yeah, it deserved to beat GRoDT, are you saying it didn’t? It’s a rap album, i don’t know how that’s even a question. What songs aren’t rap?
@@Dumpingdumplings nigga wut about hey ya is a rap song? @@DumpingdumplingsDawg wut about Hey Ya is rap song? I’m not saying it didn’t deserve the award I’m just saying it’s not a traditional rap album the way Michael or Grodt is. Essentially the Grammys never truly cared about rap music like that and there trying to make it seem like they do now so by the logic that Michael won over H&V with, it was half hearted.
Ye and Em are in a different phase of their careers. Neither are trying to make a blockbuster album and take a Grammy. I believe artists like Travis, Baby Keem and JID are in their prime and really changing the music landscape. Just my opinion tho...
Yeah how do you come to that conclusion unless you don’t know the the hell your talking about just a salty Travis stan who can’t accept his favourite artist is trash and only makes generic mainstream chart toppers
Isn't it so crazy that a mainstream award show gave an award to the biggest pop star ever????????????? It's almost like YOU had the fucked up expectations lmao
@@jaquandrejones SOS checked off every mark: it had the numbers, it had the impact, it had the diversity…give me a legitimate reason why MIDnights won other than Taylor being a huge star? And if that were the case, why did Travis Scott lose rap album of the year to Killer Mike? It’s very clear what the Grammys does
Travis Scott definitely got snubbed with Astroworld in 2019, but I feel Killer Mike deserves it and should have been acknowledged a long time ago. Edit: 2019, not 2018. 😂
Was he really snubbed in 2018? I agree that Cardi B was probably the worst option to win, but I still wouldn’t put Astroworld as 2018’s best rap album. Swimming, Daytona, Kids See Ghosts, Drogas Wave, Ta13oo, and Some Rap Songs were just as good if not better than Astroworld.
@@boost3188 2019 as in the time of the award ceremony. Many expected Travis to win by the nominations because while the album was great, it also held great accolades. It’s a shame to say, but albums need to do numbers and be massively popular to be a shoe-in to win the award. Astroworld was great and arguably most accolades than any other record in that category so it made sense for it to win. I know there’s more better albums than Astroworld, some were even nominated. Some of my favorite albums indefinitely were in 2018, probably albums you never heard of and they’re so so SO many miles ahead of Astroworld, it’s just Astroworld just made the bigger splash.

@@jaycyclondo I mean what other genre is more popular and influential than hiphop? More than half of popular genres derive their current sound from us. Even their fashion
The only rappers today who can win a Grammy for album of the year are rappers with extreme versatility and a literally revolutionary artistic depth that goes beyond rap by strongly touching audiences and experts beyond other musical genres like Kendrick, Kanye or even Rocky which I find a little underrated. Travis Scott is good but his album Utopia lacks lyrical and thematic depth, it doesn't really reach the extent of the Utopian meaning even if there are beautiful sounds in this record, there are sounds like K Pop which have nothing to do in this album but who nevertheless put it which makes it more less authentic. Killer Mike's victory is fine and not as scandalous as Cardi b's.
I’m kind of torn tbh. On one hand, I’m happy for Mike and think that he genuinely deserved the win because, from what I’ve heard, Michael is a really album. But on the other hand, I can’t help but feel like Travis genuinely deserved the win this time. Utopia was easily the most talked about and hyped up rap album that came out this year with the years long speculation leading up to its release and the Circus Maximus tour which has been going crazy for a few months now.
Utopia is not head and shoulders above Michael. I wouldn’t say he deserves the awards, it’s completely fair the album with the better rapping and on best rap album.
Sadly that is likely true. To nominate him is one thing, they just can’t not nominate an album with that kind of magnitude, that would make the Grammys look even worse than they already do. Awarding him is another. That would cause an outrage among not just music fans, but for normal people too that like to debate over certain things. The headlines would say something like “Astrofest demonic murderer Travis Scott’s Grammy win causes major outrage”. Sadly it is a stigma he will have to live with for at least a good few years until some other person does something even worse and people can ride that wave.
seeing the vast majority of ppl saying ‘Travis got robbed’ immeadiately after the award got announced honestly frustrated me. Michael is a phenomenal album and I’m not gonna say it’s better than utopia but I think ppl should give both a listen before deciding
As many people have, I stopped taking the Grammys seriously after The Heist won over GKMC, but when 1989 won Album of the Year over TPAB, I straight up loss hope. 😂🤣
we need a new award.Easier said than done because no one is gonna respect an award made overnight you need years and years of credibility to earn the same respect as the grammys or atleast the respect they had.But we really need a new award.
I'm truly happy for Killer Mike to win three Grammys. He's a legend and put out a great project last year and received great reviews from it. Me too, I thought Travis would win "Album Of The Year" with Utopia because this project truly exceeded our expectations and represents for me a generational opus of this decade. Now, I don't agree with the fact he was robbed in the "Album Of The Year" because as I said, "Michael" is an excellent album from the lyrics to the beats. For me, it checks everything it requires in a hip-hop album. In my opinion, we should be fair play and give Mike his flowers. Utopia is still an incredible project but "Michael" was really pushed by the hip-hop community. So even though I usually don't care about the Grammys, I stand with Killer Mike for the culture and also for his great album.
I think Killer Mike deserved this win. I went back to his album way more than Utopia. It’s lyrical, it’s sonically pleasing, it features a Sac rapper (I’m from sac), and Mike is a pillar of the black community. He’s always advocated for the black community through his music so this win for him was well deserved
I think that rappers, rnb artist, and other black artist and producers need to just make their own award show on the level of the Grammy's. Not only are they never going to be considered the best performers, but they are left to fight over one category of awards because they will never be considered for anything outside of "Rapper" or "Melodic Rap". I loved IGOR, but Tyler was right when he said that its idiotic to consider it a rap album. Now you have a younger audience and old heads fighting over if Killer Mike is even relevent anymore or if Travis Scott is even a "real rapper" or a "mumble rapper" and if he represents rap at all. We need to be able to divide the categories up in a satisfying way that makes sense to us.
tbh travis losing sucks to me but what sucks even more is that despite metro making a phenominal album and producing an entire movies soundtrack he still lost best producer to a taylor swift producer which i find wayyyyy worse
It really pisses me off about how little they respect Hip-hop and almost all black artists. It's just outrageous and needs some addressing; how can people even watch the Grammys? The Weeknd got zero nominations after he dropped After Hours, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly lost to Taylor Swift's 1986 in Album of the Year when TPAB is the clear winner (and a far better album, no hate to Taylor Swift or her album but I'm just speaking by artistic vision and the meaning of the album,) Jay-Z said in the Grammys 2 days ago that DMX didn't even get nominated for Rap Album of the Year after releasing two successful albums and that's just shocking, Eminem lost many times in Album of the Year and this right here really irritates me, Cardi B winning against Travis Scott in Rap Album of the Year, Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar losing to Harry Styles in Album of the Year, SZA losing to Taylor Swift in Album of the Year (Again, no hate towards Taylor Swift but come on, SOS is a better album than Midnights. And I know Lana Del Ray is not a black artist or anything like that but she got robbed too,) and of course good kid, m.a.ad city loosing to The Heist. These are examples of why no one respects the Grammys anymore, how can this even happen? To be honest with you the Grammys is just a popular contest at this point. How can an artist feel rewarded or good about winning the Grammys when it's clear that it's not really rewarding? The 66th Grammys would probably be the first and last time watching the Grammys....
I almost forgot but The Miseducation of Lauryn and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below are the only two "Rap" albums that won Album of the Year but that's funny to me because it's very clear that both albums are not really Rap albums. There's many other things that I forgot to address but I think I got my point across.
Astroworld got snubbed...Utopia, I'm not sure, tbh I've listened to it a couple of times and it didn't do much for me, but idk was Michael not grammy deserving?
I think Michael deserves this win though🎉. I really liked scientists and engineers and shed tears. They were my favorite on his album. I remember him rapping with Andre 3000 and most recently (like a couple of years ago) in nobody speak. He’s really a great lyricist❤ I do like Travis Scott no doubt, however, Michael has been around for such a LONG time💕
Dont get me wrong. I respect the fuck out of Killer Mike and his album. He does deserve it, but travis should have won. His album had such a huge impact on the year.
Y’all thinking Travis deserved this more than killer Mike…a legend of 10 plus years who constantly puts out great - classic material and is highly regarded as one of the best lyricist is crazy😂.
The amount of time doesnt matter. Travis deserved this award because he put out the better album that year. Killer mikes album was good Travis’s was just better!
@@jeisonjj look at you….be more self aware. If people said “we need to see who’s on this voting bored” and they realized your pic…don’t you think everybody and they momma would say “see this why they get the hip hop category wrong”😂. And then you go take “I like a bi girl on a bicycle” over killer Mike? Ugh it’s like we move backwards every generation
The Comparison between Eminem’s / Kanye’s albums and Travis albums is pretty accurate in my opinion. It’s game changing albums and the Grammies decide to take a shit on em
it's not '85 and it's disrespectful to the artists that try so hard to revolutionize music. old shih is good in the old days but this isn't the old days and you not bumping killer mike's album in public.
I wish you were as right as you are passionate. 1) old shit belongs in the old days is a false premise not worth exploring, everything about that statement doesn’t make sense, music is either timeless or it isn’t 2) “you wouldn’t bump Killer Mike’s album in public” is false, because I have, I do and I still will. If you can’t hear music and see the talent or quality in content and arrangement, then you are operating from bias. Both albums are dope, don’t discount quality trying to prove a point.
2 things, 1 while Astroworld, Victory Lap, Daytona and Swimming definitely deserved the grammy over Invasion of Privacy I've never actually understood why that album is so maligned it's just an album full of well written and well performed club tracks and some more personal stuff as well, it's not a bad album at all just nowhere near the level of the other 4 in the category. 2 Killer Mike deserved that award and I don't care what anyone says, he has worked tirelessly for so long in the genre and has recieved support from so many rap legends throughout the years on top of releasing consistently amazing projects, this award was long overdue and seeing him get so excited over winning was the cherry on top. Utopia also wasn't even close to Michael imo(obviously it was still a good album but it is far from Travis' best both production and performance wise)
They probably knew Killer Mike was going to get arrested and arranged for it to happen = clicks They knew we would've got mad about them sleeping on travis = clicks It's just a circle jerk though isn't it, do any of us even watch it?
First and foremost, fuck the grammy's. Imho though, as great of an album as Utopia is, the rapping itself on it isn't all that. I feel Mike deserves this one for this category.
I really never understand the Travis hype, I don’t find utopia to be anything that hasn’t been done before or is even that personal to him. He just sounds like diet Kanye, cudi and Frank ocean to me. None of this is pushing the culture in a way that Michael or even Tyler the creator do
Travis made an album that gets better as time passes by, he displayed his journey in the making of that album, he made a movie and all of us thought that aight cool he’s got this year in the bag but nah the Grammys just had to show us how worthless their awards truly are. Like Travis Scott once said: They slept on me ten Tiiiiiimnmnnmmmmmeeeeessssssssss 🔥🔥
Invasion of Privacy sounded like an unfinished mixtape and she got up there and said she rushed to finish it in time. Definitely a slight. I think the album of the year thing is also based on the push for femininity. Not a lot of male artists have been nominated for big awards at any awards show lately
This dude just made an almost 10 minute Travis Scott propaganda video glazing Travis Scott because he didn't win Best Rap Album at the Grammys. First of all, Killer Mike been putting out great music since he first came into Hip Hop back in 2000. Second, the award is called BEST RAP ALBUM. I don't consider Travis Scott a rapper let alone Hip Hop. I always thought Travis Scott was the most overrated "rapper" of all time and I'm sticking by that statement. Also, the Astroworld incident put a well deserved black eye on him. He's lucky to even still have a career after that. Utopia was a mid album, and don't ever compare it to The Eminem Show and Graduation.
Bro same, never considered carti and travis as a rapper in the first place They make good trap song and that's it, no message aside from the vibe, it's good for party and hyoe train
Obviously Travis should have atleast 2 grammy's by now BUT, every time he works harder to make a better and better album each grammy nomination, the music can only get better from here. Utopia was an incredible album and I think its 2nd to rodeo, I wonder whats next
I really want to hear people who were in the ages of 20-35, in the 80s. I want to hear from them if it was always like this? Cause if you think about it, there was a lot of soul in the 80s a lot of fantastic music came out. From pop, hip hop, rock n roll. I just want to hear point of views. Did ppl also hear the ceo of the whole Grammy program spoke about how “the peers” are the ones that vote which doesn’t make sense. Yall would have to search the video to understand what he said. I’m not the best at explaining
I actually don’t agree on your statement when you said what Travis is to the culture is what Eminem and Kanye was in the last generation Travis entertains a certain demographic that happens to be a huge crowd but that crowd isn’t about hip hop culture compared to Kanye’s tbh
Hot take: While I agree that Hip-hop has been unrepresented at the Grammy's, who cares about getting one? Don't get me wrong, it's incredible to get one, but who needs a Grammy to present the value of your music, I'd rather sell out an arena than get a trophy. Getting a Grammy is low-key valueless in the long run.
This same thing just happened with the giving of African music performance by turning Nigerian acts against each other while giving the award to a South African who has many ancestors.
