Brent Spiner (Star Trek, Independence Day) joins us this week to drop some bombs about a certain someone’s return from the dead in Picard Season 3. Brent shares how he feels about being recognized (mostly) for a single character as Data in Star Trek - and later gets into the weeds on what his experience with the android has been like over the last few decades. We also talk about lessons learned from Joe DiMaggio, how he beat himself out for a Saturn Award, and tons of stories from his other roles in Night Court, Master of Disguise, and more!

Data is one of the best characters ever created for the screen of any size and Brent made the character into a cultural icon. It was fantastic work. I think Rosenbaum could have done Data justice too (right up until he told the producer to eff off anyway).

I wonder if the whole crew have been treated differently (more respect) in season 3 of Picard.. Not saying this was the difference, but holy hell, the acting, everything.... I think a bit more information about the Picard dynamic would have been interesting. I enjoy Picard’s acting skills as much as the next person but I’m sure there’s a bit of a difference between how most of us think or feel about him vs the real Picard and sometimes it’s good to hear some accurate facts just to remember even your hero’s are human. It sure seemed like there was a hint to the truth in his answer to working with Picard. I think the host should have let him expand a bit. I know it hurts to hear the truth sometimes but the truth alway sets you free if you can accept it.

Brent Spiner is such an incredible performer and actor. I loved him as Data, and it was heartbreaking when they “killed” the character off in Nemesis. But it was such a good sacrifice, something that Data would do in a heartbeat to save someone, regardless that the person he was saving was his friend and Captain. It saddens me that they didn’t treat him better on TNG though. That producer saying “we have faith in you” was basically “fuck you” to him. I hate it when people are treated as subhuman, like he’s a dog or a sheep.

brent got so good at playing data and lore and making them very distinct characters even in the slightest of movements... that in (spoiler alert) star trek picard season 3 when data is data and then a slight head movement probably less than a second had me going THATS LORE! and sure enough it was. the change was immediate and fans who watched tng a lot were basically conditioning ourselves just for this one moment that was less than a second. i respected brent spiner and always thought he was so talented but from one second of screen time i realized how wrong i was. he isnt just talented, hes probably one of the best actors of his generation. it is 100% believable that he did not sleep until he not just got the words right but the mannerisms and pacing as well. im thankful for his hard work and pure dedication to the craft

For those curious, the other Data-centric episode he was talking about was probably "Thine Own Self", or "the one where he lost his memory in a shuttle accident and exposed a medieval village to radioactive metal". If it wasn't Data it was LeForge who was spouting all the technobable. It's not like lex had paragraphs of meaningless goobledegook to spout off, more than that the directors and script supervisors on TNG were extremely strict that the actors recite the dialog exactly as it was on page. "No, sir. My brother's positronic brain has a type L phase discriminating amplifier. Mine is a type R." And that's mild. usually the technobable would go on for many sentences.

When Brent says the producers realized that each one of them could carry an episode, is where TNG\DS9\VOY ruled! It gave time to learn about and get involved with each character. These new shows, most notably Discovery (yes i hated it, but watched anyway) just seem to focus on the story arc only. I know really NOTHING about any of the characters in discovery...after 4 season. I don't care about the characters at all. Picard was great, but i think we should get back to episodic story telling. No more season long story arc, at least not entirely focused on it. TNG you can turn on any episode and enjoy it without needing to know what happened before it. THat was nice.

BTW the heavy audio processing makes it sound like it was recorded on a phone. The good mics should allow something more natural-sounding without suppression of quiet sounds and background.

Brent got the roles from "Masks" reversed, he was possessed by the Sun Goddess program, and Picard took on the role of the Moon God

Oh, man. "Masks" is definitely not a fan favorite for many TNG fans but it's funny to learn now that Spiner and Stewart were laughing at each other during filming.

Wait what? Why the heck would they start shooting one episode hours after finishing shooting another, if they made 26 episodes in a year? Wouldn't that mean they have 2 weeks to shoot the scenes for each episode, and the staff in post-production is just working on the previously finished episode?

Pretending for a living gave him anxiety? I think its being in the gravitational field of hollywood that would make one anxious. Ya know about the potential for losing ones soul

I liked "Masks" a lot -- I love it when shows that have the cred to take risks color WAY outside the lines just to see what will happen. It's a lot of fun.

The thing with TNG is that each actor totally nailed their character. That said Mr. Spiner also had to play a much wider variety of them. Respect!

The problem with DATA is in Star Trek he is called DATA and when they say to DATA do you have the darta that does my head in.

There's an outtake in the one where Soong activates him and he commandeers the ship where Picard makes a reference to him needing all the help he can get with his lines in then next few days b/c he's going to need it (or something like that). I think it was a reference to how many lines he was going to have to memorize playing Data, Lore, and Soong all interacting with himself basically, plus the scenes with the crew (and it was the one with the super password scene that he mouth mimics)

Back in the day where the actors and crew on set actually worked and created 26 episodes a season. 6 days a week 16 hours a day. now we get 8 episodes a season if we're lucky and it takes years for a season to come out.

I'll watch any interviews with the cast of TNG, hell I'll watch any interviews with ANY Star Trek alums....I grew up with them being my Church pew, gave stories of morality with BIPOC women in postuons of authority and that representation meant everything to this little girl, I was 5 years old when I first saw a colored woman on the bridge of a ship in charge of communications, I can still feel the chills when my Mom said in the future women will be just as valuable as men are considered to be now and that was in the year 1981....I still LOVE all things Star Trek because it's a show about human morality without ever the need to inject religion into it so EVERYONE can enjoy it!

The actors on StarTrek TNG did some of the best performances. As a kid Data was my favorite character, and the inspiration which caused me to pursue my degree in computer sciences. Im sorry to hear it was such a taxing role for Brent, but he did an excellent job.
