Why The 'Worst' Maserati Is Now The Most Desirable - Maserati 3200GT

The Maserati 3200GT is objectively not as good as the 4200GT and yet I believe that it is the more desirable car and that it will be higher valued in Future. The very weaknesses that it had at launch have now become strengths.. especially that this is the last Maserati with it's own specific engine. Why The Maserati We Loved to Hate is Now The More Desirable. Why The Maserati We Loved to Hate Is The One To buy.
This 3200GT is for sale, check it out here: www.carandclassic.com/l/C1734275

Hmmm. Would you take this over a sporting Jag? Be interested to hear....

Probably not because of running cost and I find the chassis too stiff. But it’s still a very alluring car and would feel way more special than the equivalent Jag. As well as totally out handling it when driven hard..

true story about the tail lights.Actually we had designed those taillights for a proposal of a Fiat New Large,a Croma replacement that never went to production.Cantarella liked the idea and told me that he will take those to Giugiaro, that was was developing a Maserati….so I had to design new taillights for our New Large.2-3 years pass, had almost forgot that incident, but here comes the Maserati with those taillights.😂😂😂

I only drive Italian cars for almost 30 years now. I think they’re totally worth whatever extra effort or money is required to keep them right But you are also correct that the maintenance is essential, I drove a 4200 convertible about 20 years ago and it had belonged to some football player in LA, and at 50,000 miles. the thing was falling apart. It was horrible. Structural rigidity wasn’t particularly impressive either . Sure would like the chance to drive a nice example like this one, lovely car BTW, you shouldn’t pass on the chance to test one of the more impressive biturbo era cars like a Shamal or Ghibli 🤷‍♂️ Or maybe a late 90s Quattroporte Ottocilindri

@@Number27 - it was a brand new car at the time (Lancasters at Colchester - which I see got another name check in the comments). I’d inherited some money that was burning a hole in my pocket. The salesman didn’t help saying that he’d postpone the test drive if it was wet. Also, judging by the secondhand one they had on the forecourt, the depreciation was epic. I’m trying to remember what else I didn’t like (obvs a very long time ago) - pedals very close and offset? Trim was cheap. The driveline shunt was terrible - never felt it on a car before or since. I think it was this car that pivoted me from Italian to German GTs

In any case, I’ve never thought I wanted a Maserati since and, the next time I had a silly amount of money available for a car, it was a Merc GT I considered (bought a house instead and bought an SL a little later).

You know what I'd love to see you do? The original Quattroporte from the sixties. Somewhere here on YT there used to be a video of Peter Ustinov driving his. I never saw one here in Texas on the road; it was always just there in car mags. Of course when the M-B 6.3 300SEL came out in the late sixties it rather deposed the Quattroporte as the most desirable hi-po sedan, but of course the SEL just looked like any other big M-B sedan.

Great video, Jack. I looked long and hard at these before deciding on my GranSport. They look great and those tail lights are really something, but every one of the 3200’s I looked at had some sort of lingering gremlin and couldn’t get accustomed to the power delivery and throttle response. In my opinion, the GranSport is the best looking and best driving of the platform. The sound and power delivery is awesome and are generally more reliable than the 3200 (my mechanic also strongly recommended the 4200/GS). And I personally love the CambioCorsa, but I’m probably in the minority there. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more Maserati (and Pantera!) content.

A lot of people do not have an understanding of Maserati and will comment on how expensive they are to maintain. Hi Jack, you forgot to mention THE single biggest issue that should concern anyone interested in buying a 3200GT. The thrust bearing on the crank rear has a tendency to fail on the manual cars, causing "crank end float". When the bearing fails, it spins and damages the crank beyond repair. Preventive maintenance / replacement is the only solution, there may be some Maserati specialist that has designed upgraded components but I'm not aware of it.

Yes, parallel turbo system, so no 2nd kicking in, both always going the same. And fixed cam timing running lobe on bucket, and fixed intake path. So only variability that could account for that comment is something in the ECU tuning allowing more top-end boost or ignition timing.

Loved this review and your passion for Italian cars. Nobody seems to understand the Maserati (Ferrari) Cambiocorsa system. The clutch is very controllable - you use the revs to do it, not a clutch pedal. I’ve been driving my 4200 Spyder for 8 years and I make gear changes without thinking now, smoothly under any conditions. It takes some time and mechanical sympathy to get used to, but becomes second nature, no different from eg heel and toe (but much easier). It helps if they are set up properly as well, which is easier these days. Maybe someone will make a video about how to actually drive a CC one day.

Hi there's a French guy Hedii (Smells Like Gasoline) who got his hands on a 3200GT to fix . Ok he likes to get his hands dirty fixing cars, but he certainly didn't like the experience. He's also done an old 4.24 Biturbo ,not much better...Worth a watch , you have to really love these cars too keep as a classic.

At launch, those tail lamps were ground breaking. I'm pleased the 3200 is coming of age, and getting appreciation. Its a stunning shape...1998! Years ahead of the game... buy one whilst they're still affordable!

It looks lovely, but I'll keep my 4.2L Jaguar XK convertible, thank you very much, plus I will never go back to manual!

As the owner of a 1999 model I totally agree, the car has flaws and the reliability is very average. However, put replacement silencers on it and it sounds epic. as you say, the engine really wants to rev up and the power delivered between 4000 and 6000rpm is brutal!! at 6000 change gear and repeat. The way the engine revs and punch has no equivalent in modern turbo engines. charming car. Fun. Feel very very fast for 370-400bhp faster than 4200 gt , Gransport. I drive both

I owned a 2000 model with 19,000 kms, navy blue with cream interior from 2007 to 2010 and I can agree with most of what is said by this gentleman in the road test. For sure it’s a flawed vehicle. Beautiful to look at, gorgeous interior, and an utterly phenomenal sound with the Mille Miglia mufflers that I had fitted. But the hair trigger throttle, various electrical problems, average handling/roadholding, high repair costs and regular throttle body issues detracted from my ownership experience. Your heart may desire it but I would not recommend this car to anyone.

I remember that they had to change the rear lights for the USA market as drivers couldn't figure out when the car was breaking...

Gorgeous car, always dreamed of it. In the pre-Ferrari era they had reliability issues. Today you can find fault with them, maybe the design and performance are not what they were before. But reliability is the last complaint about the current Maserati

Jack. It never came with Cambiocorsa. Was either a manual or a BTR4 speed auto. The auto was a nice box.

That certainly was never an assetto corsa. They never made them in mistral green, and only ever with black leather. It does have the later wheels that they put in the early 4200’s. Nice to see you review this beast.

Would really love to see a review of the Gandini designed Quattroporte IV, particularly the final Evoluzione version reworked when Ferrari took over. Or maybe you’ve already reviewed one? 🤔 It would make for a decent “was it really as bad as they said?” video!

Hey big brother Jack! Oh wow, you got me with this one, big bro. I am an American here in NYC and have always loved these Maserati's. Just so conservatively, classically gorgeous and lovely-a perfect sports car for a perpetual JV baseball guy like me lol. I have never seen one of these early examples with those super sexy and even more feminine taillights and with that pure Maserati turbo V8. Really a great machine! I wish I was there with ya, even stuffed in that backseat, which literally looks like my baseball mitt. Amazing! Thanks big bro. JV Johnny ⚾⚾

Very good review of an oftenly missunderstood car, and brand. As someone stated already, after-sales service is miserable. Premium car maybe, but Maserati brand and service is well below standards found on less special cars. Would buy one only with heart, loving the product, and having big savings on patience and cash to service it properly. As much as I love the 3200, is one of those cars in which the buyer must be certain first who will be servicing it, and after finding the proper specialist, start browsing the web to buy the best example he/she can afford. Thanks for the review.

Speculators love to hate exotic cars initially to depreciate them, only to flip them later.

I love them - I think the restyle ruined the looks - the inverted hockey stick rear lights looked brilliant. And that tan leather interior and Alcantara head lining - wonderful. My kind of car!
