Thoughts prior to watching the video: they are called Death Eaters because Voldemort’s goal was to ultimately defeat death and not die. Death was one of the few things he truly feared and is also what his name translates to: Vol De Mort is French for Flight from Death

No actually Vol in french means both flight and theft. But from a grammatical point of view vol-de-mort would translate to flight of death wich doesnt make much sense, so i think it's intended to be translated as death theft. As in making the horcruxes he kills his victims in order to steal their life expectancy from them

Voldemort's perverted version of a Sin Eater ...A sin-eater is a person who consumes a ritual meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person. The food was believed to absorb the sins of a recently dead person, thus absolving the soul of the person. Sin-eaters, as a consequence, carried the sins of all people whose sins they had eaten. Cultural anthropologists and folklorists classify sin-eating as a form of ritual. It is most commonly associated with Wales, English counties bordering Wales and Welsh culture.[1]

There's a book called "Looking for God in Harry Potter" by John Granger (yes, that's his real last name) and he mentions in it that Christians used to be called life-eaters, meaning that they're basically given life by celebrating communion (eating and drinking the symbolic elements of Christ, the life giver). He believed Death Eaters were called such because they are the opposite of life eaters (Christians, allegorically most of the "good guys" in Harry Potter). It really fit in with everything else he said in the book when it came to Christian elements in Harry Potter, like each ending with a descent into a hades underground (or Forbidden Forest or literal graveyard) and a Christ-like figure rescuing Harry from a Satan-like enemy (Phoenix, stag patronus (white stags are Christ symbols), etc.). And then of course the whole "love conquers all" and the talk of sacrificing your life for others and the protecting others... Anyway, I do love how you guys fleshed out the meaning of holly and yew. So much thought went into those books.

Here's a point: I think ordering the basilisk to kill moaning Myrtle fits because Voldemort used Nagini to kill Snape, believing that would turn the wand over to him, so ordering someone's death with a snake probably counts as you killing them.

I would agree in the fact that you are using magic to speak to the snake. I dont think (from memory) you can just, learn to talk to snakes. Ron somewhat picked up bits from harry but i dont think he ever knew what he was saying in parseltoungue right?)
@Baskeva
@Baskeva 2 года назад
@@oswinosgood7870 Whether or not it has to do with magic, I don't think it's necessarily relevant. this was in response to his question of why Moaning Myrtle's death helped create the hoarcrux in the journal, because it wasn't actually Voldemort that killed Myrtle -- it was the basilisk... so his question was how could he be taking a life and create a hoarcrux when it was the basilisk that killed Myrtle and not actually Tom Riddle? But I'm saying that I think it would be consistent in the story, with Voldemort being considered the killer-by-snake, because he believed that killing Snape with Nagini would transfer ownership of the Elder Wand to him -- thus making him a killer-by-snake -- meaning it's not Nagini killing, it's Voldemort, in both Snap and Myrtle's case. Does that make sense?

I think the thing about Myrtle and the diary is that it was his first time attempting the spell. He had done a lot of research and there was still things he didn't know about the spell and how it worked. He probably wasn't sure if he would be able to communicate with the Horcrux or what kind of connection he would retain so using a diary would give him the best chance of being able to communicate if he wanted to or needed to and it allows that part of himself to communicate with others which obviously became quite usefull. It was his way of giving the spell every chance of working that he could. I think he used the snake because it would also test if he had to commit the murder himself or if it could just be him causing their death. In short I think he wanted to test as much about the spell that he could.

My guess regarding Dumbledore's wardrobe is that he got his titles (Headmaster, Supreme Warlock of the Wizengamot, Order of Merlin, ICW, etc.) after he defeated Grindelwald, and ungrateful traditionalists, blood purists, and the like won't take him seriously if he wears business suits which they might see as Muggle attire, no matter how formal it looks to us the audience. I mean you never see people like Lucius Malfoy in those suits (though I might be mistaken of course). Robes are part of Dumbledore's campaign to win people over.

Actually the business suits and the whole look of Dumbledore just screams “miscast” to me. Jude law does not have Auburn hair, which is well established in the Potter Canon and he never had the whole muggle attire vibe. Though I can more easily overlook the muggle fashion statement if Dumbledore actually looked like a young Dumbledore as portrayed in the main canons.

Some Pagan practitioners and some witches still practice the magic of Ogham. The woods and their meanings are most likely based on Irish Ogham trees charts which use trees similarly to zodiac signs. Holly is the tree for the 8th lunar month for dates between July 8th and Aug 4th- and Harry was born July 31st. The yew tree is the tree for Yule which in pagan practice is the celebration of the winter solstice which is the longest night of the year, or the darkest day which can loosely be associated to Tom Riddle/Voldemort. JK Rowling frequently incorporates lore and mythology of all kinds. Her use of the meanings and representations of the trees of Ogham would not be unfounded. Btw love the channel!

Avada Kedavra definitely is not powered by lightning. The spell does not leave a mark on or damage the body in any way. The coroner's report on the Riddle family showed that. They all had a look of fear. Since the patronus require a happy thought and Harry's cruciatus curse didn't work because of his righteous anger, could Avada Kedavra be similar? Possibly a focus on anger or hatred. That would play into Harry's scar hurting badly when Voldemort kills someone since he picks up the spike in emotion.

@Cailus3542
@Cailus3542 2 года назад
I figured that Avada Kedavra was somewhat more basic than that. The spell simply rips the soul from the body. Nothing more, nothing less. It's spiritual violence, in a sense, and as such, requires substantial magical power and will. It's a cool theory that some form of negative emotion is involved, though, to be sure, but I see it more as that hatred making it easier to cast the spell, rather than the hatred being required. Sufficiently powerful wizards (Snape, for instance, when he euthanised Dumbledore) don't necessarily require that emotion to cast the spell.

Partial lyric: The holly and the ivy When they are both full grown Of all trees that are in the wood The holly bears the crown Also, at least as far as I can recall, the Holly and the Ivy also signifies Jesus' escape as a baby from the forces of King Herod, a baby marked by when he was born, and has an overall connection to the Slaughter Of The Innocents, the red and the green symbolizing both spilled blood and life, and summed up in the equally haunting Coventry Carol. Now, this one may not have been in JKR's wheelhouse when she wrote all this, but many scholars - devoted and believing - hold that the Slaughter probably did not happen because Herod's soldiers would have refused to perform this act, fearing reprisals from the populace among other things. So out of secrecy, wishing to get it right and fearing possible hesitation by his some of his followers (Not all are like Bella or Barty), he sets out to kill these possible-champions himself, surpassing or sinking lower than Herod is said to have. The yew tree, symbol of the graveyard, is overcome by the one will wield the might of the holly tree, associated perhaps twice over with another boy who lived. Merry Christmas!

Just saw your Spider-Man review, possible video topic for you. Did Dr. Strange break the timeline, or create an alternate reality with his spell in Spider-Man? Cause the spell made it so no one knew Peter existed...ever. Which means that Tony never could have recruited him into the Avengers, so Peter couldn't have partaken in Civil War, Infinity, End Game....or Happy would have known him which he doesn't. However, at the end of Spider-Man it seems as if all is the same minus Peter's identity known...how can the events that happened have happened if Peter was never in the Avengers? Did the spell not work, and the world does still have the proof that Peter is Spider-Man but no physical memory? Did the spell work and the reality we see at the end of Spider-Man can't exist cause Peter was never part of the Avengers so the events couldn't have happened the same? Or did we see Peter in a new timeline or universe that's similar but a universe were he never existed in the first place so things could happen the same without him being a part of it?

My thinking is it would have played the same, only with Tony recruiting Spider-Man with no knowledge of what Spider-Man's true identity is. Though alternative time lines is also a possibility, since the act of sending everyone to their home reality technically created 7+ new timelines

AS I understand it, yew wood is also traditionally used to make bows. And is the etymological origin of the word "yeoman". Not that this has anything to do with the term "Death Eater", but bows were used to bring death to an enemy in battle (or death to an animal in hunting - which you would then eat).

@7:31 did you know that moldy-voldy died at 71, for a guy who wanted to be immortal, he only lived for 71 years, and we know wizards can live longer than 120 years (Dumbledore) and he died from outside forces actively trying to kill him. The way I concluded that Tim Roddle lives 71 years is this; in the second book, the chamber of secrets, we know that Tom was rewarded “a reward for special services to the school” fifty years ago along with the diary’s faded year indicating the same thing, he was sixteen, fifth year (the chamber scene says “-not a day older than sixteen”), when the events happened those fifty years ago, I then added those fifty years and sixty together, so 66 then the extra 5 years between Harry’s 2nd year and deathly hallows, and there you have it 71 years old when he died, this is hilarious because he died younger then the average life span lol, and wizards are shown to be able to live longer 🤣🤣🤣

Disclaimer, based on my theory in Rowling her writing style and not on the HP movies! This is based on the FBAWTFT link to HP. Prob Newt Scamander was the one who made the spell of making a horcrux. With no intent that Voldemort used it or manipulated it, but it happend. Newt Scamander made/fabricated a spell that Splits an obscurus with a host. But is turns out that with this same spell it can also split a soul of a wizard or even muggle, human or animal too. Phoenix comes into the scene, as the catalisor of 'from the ashes reborn'. Spell. I am in no intent de spell maker but let me continue in my theory: So, Newt used Fawkes the Phoenix as a part of the making of the spell of the ultimate split of souls. Obscurus and Horcrux= some 'crazy' names to tell in a story.. so in no way this is not relevant to Harry Potter lore AND in this the real spell Voldemort could use to make Horcrux.

A sin-eater is a person who consumes a ritual meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person.

My first thought was that well the Yew tree is just following the cycle of life, but then if it's preventing other life from taking the nutrients and having it all for itself and wards off others with poison, not that a tree can be evil, and it's specifically planted there by humans, who want their dead to be left alone.... A confusing situation but the symbolism works.

I’d also like to point out that Yew trees were central to Nordic religions. The tree Yggdrasil, a yew, was the passageway for the dead from the realm of the living to the underworld, their afterlife. Pagans would place the dead in the upper portion of the tree for their souls to be transported through the roots. As such, they were protected by their leaders. When the new king came around and aimed to wipe out paganism, he ordered all yew trees to be cut down and made into weaponry for war. Also, as someone mentioned before, the snake eating itself is known as ouroboros, a universal sign of immortality or the cycle of life

Regarding the look of the wands throughout the movies, I headcanon that all Ollivander wands look like the ones from Philosopher's Stone when he makes them and that it's the symbiotic sharing of magic through the wand through a magical life that warps the design until it takes on a truly unique design for each person. It even accounts for the odd design of the Elder Wand having changed hands so often and had so many different magics forced through it in it's time that it's now a hodge podge of hundreds of different magics. I know in reality it was just a design choice as the series went on, but I think it adds a new dimension to wand lore and I find it easier to believe than the idea Ollivander sold an eleven-year-old Tom Riddle a wand that looked like it was carved from evil bone and didn't immediately go: "Yep, that one's gonna be a Dark Lord for sure." That's not to say he can't or wont make a customer shaped wand (such as the one made for Luna) but those are usually made later in life and are custom made for a user he already has some idea about so can be better designed to fit the user from the outset so don't need as long to build the link between magical and focus.

I don't think Myrtle was turned into a Horcrux. Where does that come from? The diary shows Harry what happens way after Myrtle's death: How Tom points the finger at Hagrid. That couldn't be the case if Tom created the Horcrux right after Myrtle died. I think the Horcrux needs to be created right after killing, and neither did Tom kill Myrtle (it was the Basilisk) nor do I believe he wanted to make a Horcrux at the time.

I think a connection to the Michael Crichton novel "The Eaters of the Dead" aught to be considered. The book and its sister movie, The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas, tries to create the story of Beowulf using historical documents from the 900s. Grendel is replaced by a cult of pagans disguised as bearish monsters. They always take their dead with them to maintain the illusion of their monsterhood/immortality. Further, the story of Beowulf has been interpreted to connect Grendel to Cain. (Brian "wolfrick" Dumbledore, dumbledore is a British word for BEE. the name beowulf is "bee-hunter" Albus (white) wolf-bee that fights "Grendel"wold). Who are the descendants of Cain/Grendel? those that eat their dead to appear immortal

So when I heard Ben say that it was about the wand wood, I was very confused. Every part of the yew tree is poisonous…and I’m also sure every part of it has a use in curing ailments. This makes no sense when we are talking about Voldemort, and though I did know this about yew trees for a while, I never thought about it until I watched this video.
