I love how the shot of Iroh redirecting lightning in this episode sort of indicates that this is the first time he's actually used this technique. We can tell he'd already invented it prior to this because he gets into position as he senses the lightning coming, but then he kind of seems shocked (sorry) that the technique actually worked! And then the next time he uses it, on Azula, he's much more confident. It's such a great little detail.

I've often wondered if he dealt with other lightning benders before but that he never directed an actual lightning bolt before. I'd imagine the electric charge from a lightning bolt would be way more powerful than any lightning produced by a person. I'm honestly surprised it didn't cause his heart to stop or fry his brain.

Considering that the only Firebenders who use lightning are the royal family, it's highly likely this is the first time.

Also, that moment when Zuko lets the Avatar go and saves his crew members gives stark contrast later to when Azula is told by her men that they shouldn't sail into an unsafe condition because it could kill them, and Azula's response to that.

What I always liked about Avatar was that while there are world ending stakes, a Chosen One, and huge battles, the writers never forgot that their main characters were still very young. I remeber the cliche of 'wise beyond their years' or just some kind specialness that was du regur for many YA characters but while Team Avatar do all possess a little bit of that they still respond the way most people in their age bracket would either by running away, trying to be the tough leader, or the peacemaker.

@@J__T how? We know he gave them money just not alot of it. They said in the waterbending scrolls episode that they're almost out of the money King Bumi gave them. So he obviously gave them money and that was only 4 episodes ago. I understand why the writers didn't give them a ton of money. It's a plot device for two of the upcoming episodes so they needed to be broke. No plot if Katara legitimately buys the waterbending scroll and Sokka doesn't go out during the storm if they have money. But Bumi only giving them 3 episodes of money seems cheap for a king's contribution to his friend trying to save the world.

@@Puckett. Money is heavy and bulky (and a huge target for thieves etc). I feel like Bumi knew that if he gave them too much it would just put a target on their back and also slow them down.

I've never thought of the symbolism of Ozai=lightning and Iroh redirecting it and teaching Zuko how to redirect it, and it is now one of my favorite things, thank you for it! I love how someone (me) could have spent hours watching the show and watching other people watch it, and watching analysis videos and still find new bits on every watch

@@solalabell9674 Glad that's been your experience. I've seen people who actually hate Katara (including one of my irl friends 😭) and it's both heartbreaking and infuriating. It was somewhat a trend to hate her back in 2020 when the show had a huge revival, & while it's largely died down there's still some people that cling to invalid talking points to devalue her character & her role in the show & it's just sad :')

I have encountered people who hate her, I think it comes from the type of person she is. Like, with me, I think she's a great character and very needed type of person for the story and so I appreciate her a lot, but there's also a sense I have of her that I'd probably not get along with her at all, especially back when I was a kid. She's the type of person who had to develop a strong sense of responsibility way too soon, which usually leads to a teen that's very bossy and somewhat high strung which are characteristics that I would get annoyed very quickly, especially back when I was a kid. There's something to be said about how Katara is much more stereotypically feminine in a lot of ways which for many can make character flaws feel more annoying to them then they otherwise would, especially from when they were kids Now to be clear, I don't hate her, I think she's a great character and fills a very needed position in the dynamics of the gang but I think what makes other people hate her is what I reference but also their own experience with that type of person and projecting that experience onto her.

My personal favourite has to be the blue spirit, I don't have the literary analysis skills necessary to fully articulate why, but it's just really really good As for a guess at what yours would be, it'd be real fun if it was also the blue spirit but I guess I'll have to wait and see :P

@@hez859a lot of people think Katara's 'whiny' and 'annoying' because y'know, the show portrays her accurately as a teenage girl. The same people tend to get inconsolably FURIOUS about that episode where she steals from pirates and doesn't learn that ' stealing is always wrong and evil'. It's a weirdly large (or just vocal) number of people
