When laying out a metro, you won't see much parking around an inner-city metro stop. You will however see a TON of parking around your outer most metro stops. Idea is people will park outside of town and ride metro into town then walk around. Not that you won't need parking in an IT cluster like that, but walkability is more important in that kind of cluster than parking near the metro stop. Washington DC is a perfect example of that. If you look at a fringe stop like Shady Grove (end of the red line) there are two huge parking garages and three huge parking lots. If you look at a any downtown stop there is no parking - just bus and taxi. So when you're talking transit priority trains, busses, and cars move people to outter most stops, then walkability and buses move people around downtown. This will be really fun to play with when the Plaza's DLC drops.

@Clavichordist
@Clavichordist Год назад
@@hellsop The trend over here is to discourage commuters from driving into the cities through either high parking costs or limiting their options for parking. The regional transit agencies have done just as Dean describes. In the greater Boston MA area, the MBTA subway (metro) red and orange lines run out to the outer suburbs and cross through the downtown. The red line starts out in Cambridge on the Arlington line at Alewife Brook Parkway and runs clear out to Braintree on the Southshore far from the downtown. The orange line runs from Oak Grove on the north side in Melrose to Forest Hills in Hyde Park well out in the western suburbs. These outer termini have large parking lots and as the lines get closer to the metropolitan center, there's no parking at all. In Boston itself there are a few parking garages, but the parking is at a premium and you do pay for that luxury. This scenario also plays out in Chicagoland and in the greater New York City area.
@hellsop

Can we have a little moment to respect the editing/music choice for the flyover at around the 30 minute mark... Beautiful stuff... Great build today... Feels like the city is getting some direction and character now... Addition of the quay wall was great as well. Was thinking the same thing before you added it. Would also be perfect for the pedestrianised areas when the DLC comes out with people walking down to the river for lunch at various cafes and restaurants on the waterfront under the shadow of the mega towers...

29:23 This type of courtyard in an American city will always have trees in it. They are either in a raised bed or in the ground with a grate around the base. Some of them will have small fences around the trunks. There's no open gound unless they use the grate method so you could just add the trees and it would look authentic. Love this section of the city!

Hi ... 14:52 I really like the idea of giving metro coverage to almost every (built) area of the map. The thing is: you built Metro Plaza and its 5 platforms / 10 opportunites to connect tracks to it seem to dictate the structure of you network. All metro lines go to Metro Plaza which is the only real place to transfer from one metro line to another, and as these lines extend to areas further away from the Metro Plaza you are forced to implement these meandering, longer, less direct routes. Centralistic approach and meandering both reduce the attractiveness of the metro network. A solution to both would be a (semi-)circle line with transfer opportunities all/most of the other metro lines. Several of you meandering spurs would become parts of that line. The idea is actually inspired by the "S-train (Copenhagen)" network (wikipedia article of that name shows a map), where the F-Line is the only one avoiding the busy shared central tunnel (which would be the equivalent to Metro Plaza in Mississipatea) and its 5-minute-headways indicate how well utilized it is. With further growth there might even be potential for a second (semi-)circle line. Why SEMI-circle? Well, Copenhagen has its dense areas near the ocean, so the F-Line will never form a real circle. You placed Metro Plaza at the edge of you built area creating a similar situation for now ... but further growth might change that.
@edwardmiessner6502

The US has centralised metros irl meaning they're only good for ferrying office workers from the outskirts or suburbs to downtown and back. The most notorious of these is the MBTA or 'The T' in Boston which before the pandemic was unbelievably choked beyond its carrying capacity, especially on the Red and Green Lines.
@corporatelobbyist2124

This wouldn’t happen. Most subways here shuttle office workers to and from the suburbs centrally from a central transfer center. MARTA and the L are good examples

I love the idea of the river being called the Mississipitea River. I live near the river it's named for so I think it's fitting. I like that new trick of placing a random building from a filtered selection. It also lets you build houses in a new development just like in RL. Doing it this way will allow building a new development including all needed services that can be designed for different zoning types. An example of what I mean would be a bedroom community or an office park. One would need education and lots of parks but offices just need some green space for lunch but not needed in the evenings. But a sports complex located somewhere in or near the office park would bring people to the area in the evenings & weekends. I'm thinking in RL and not game mechanics but who knows.
@Roger_Kirk

Love this area and the different sizes of buildings you've added. Like the square modern city centre buildings you made along the river, but then you cut one in half and added random buildings in the middle - maybe a series of square buildings of different sizes would look better, with plazas in between for the seating. Would also make the view of the buildings look better from the river/across the river - something that would likely be required in a real development.

Y junction instead of a X one? And then that one only bridge creates a T junction with the collector that will eventually continue over at the center of the isle? 4:37

I'd concrete in the whole midtown and use invisible paths instead of the ugly standard paths. With a bit of decorating this would works just fine, i guess

A number of those tall buildings are a tad too close to each other and need more space between them. Perhaps even a courtyard or some other open space here and there as to help break it up a bit. A few buildings are even touching, which is not good for tall buildings as they need some degree of space between them. Take the rules from New York City for example, tall buildings must have shorter ones in between so that there would not be too much height in one area for aesthetics and safety. Regular parking lots will not due for such a dense area, with that many people there needs to be some parking garages and big ones for the bigger building areas. When I do spots of super tall buildings in my builds, I imagine the simple method used by the French when building rooms for their chateaus. The 1, 2, 3 rule where the width, length, and height of a room should keep within a ratio of 1, 2, and 3. Since super tall buildings take of the 3 spot, the width and depth of the plot would be a rectangle of either one width or depth withe the two being the remaining spot. The width of the building, or average width, would be the one spot. The two would then be open area, whether it be all on one side or asymmetrically split. In the end, if I had a super tall that takes up 5 by 5 squares, I would have two squares open area on one side, three on the back or side, and then an open area of eight by eight squares on the remaining side for a hefty open area. If the building were of an extreme height, I would give the plot its own road so that I can fit the building further from the main road more and then proceed to give it the same asymmetrical rectangular plot treatment.

If you use zoning along your american road you may set an offest with the tool so grass don't interfer. I often use it at max offset to add pedestrian/bike path to road missing them or making them look wider and having trees around sidewalk

Biffa, I don't know if you know, but with the node controller, you can change the type of node and have better curves on your pedestrians path, and have a unified look until the next intersection (at least vanilla, as I didn't tried any pedestrian path modded yet). Also, if someone can tell me the name of the mod which gives the panel with "elevation steps", "modes" and "straight slope" options, it will be warmly welcomed. Thank you for your content.
