A fleet of ships that could simply lower power level superlaser other ships on the other hand... Just take Venators (Or a similar ship that would have that much room/space etc.) and make small superlasers like Anakin did - a whole fleet of those fuckers - but with dedicated lasers and gravity wells and cloaking devices and black hole generators. Obviously you'd be adding more power, .6 hyperdrives (or just making .5s) and a LOT of turbolaser and point defense laser batteries... which you'd be able to power just fine, because you're not doing any ground landings. You have other ships for that. Then watch anyone stupid enough to oppose you with capital ships utterly decimated. And still have more than enough room on each one for 50+ TIE fighters.

The Death Star was more than just the weapon. It was a battle station. It had hangers big enough to park an imperial mark 2 battle ship where it could undergo refueling and provisioning and repairs in a protective environment conducive to rapid work. It would also be a major communication and control center for multiple fleets in the galaxy far from the capital. It was a safe and welcoming place for rest and recreation for imperial troops during long deployments and a hospital and long term care facility for the wounded. The weapon was a bonus since having the Death Star show up in your system would create the fear that the emperor thought would keep restive systems in check since it could blow a regular planet to pieces with one shot. But as always with despots, they counted on fear to do most of the work and looked at the little guys as not significant enough to worry about. A belief that was prevalent throughout the imperial hierarchy and was made manifest in all of their ships. All of which were designed for engagement with ships of the line in fleet engagements and which is why virtually every imperial ship destroyed, like the Death Stars 1 and 2, were destroyed by smaller ships and fighter bombers.
@thunderstudent
@thunderstudent Год назад
It should also be mentioned in legends, Vader and Thrawn both saw it as a waste of resources and time. They in this regard were very like minded, preferring more capital ships and better star fighters. Vader also saw the Death Star as insignificant compared to the Force, and said as much in the original film. In legends, he even smiled after the Death Star was destroyed, because although his master would punish him severely, he was ultimately proven correct. Thrawn as you said put the empire and his people above himself. In legends he knew the Yuzhazn Vong were coming with gigantic fleets and warships. He wanted to keep the galaxy safe from the Yuzhazn Vong, and wanted a united fleet that could combat them. If Thrawn had any faults, it would be him trying to fight the New Republic instead of trying to inform them of the threat and making a temporary peace until the Yuzhazn Vong were dealt with. Bringing the Imperial Remnant forces under his control and producing as many ships as he could under the circumstances and then fight the Republic when they were weakened.
@jaymikevillanueva1212
@jaymikevillanueva1212 Год назад
What Thrawn should have done is take control of the Imperial Remnant by either eliminating or strong arming the warlords to give complete control of the Imperial military while having the Moffs back him into brokering a peace with the New Republic. That way, he could have rebuilt the Imperial military by reforming it into an efficient machine designed to fight the Yuuzhan Vong. Remember, the Empire of the Hand had dozens more sectors than the Remnant. He could have combined the two states into a new Imperial state that is a realization of Thrawn's ideals and pragmatism.
@snerdterguson
@snerdterguson Год назад
He also had the same failing as the Emperor in taking for granted the loyalty of a subservient. It was his most trusted bodyguard, if I'm remembering the name right, Rukh, who kills him in Legends Canon. He became complacent and never thought the Noghri would find out the truth of what the Empire did to their home planet. That they did find out was what led to his downfall. On a semi related note, I know that it won't be Rukh vs Chewie, but I really hope the Noghri appear in Ahsoka and there's a scene where one beats down a wookie. I remember as a kid reading g the Thrawn trilogy and rereading the part where Chewie gets his ass kicked over and over. Because I didn't think anything could take down a Wookie that easily.
@alexschorr9551
@alexschorr9551 Год назад
The problem there was that he saw the Republic as weak, they didn’t have much of a focus on their military and their system of government made it hard to make tough decisions when they need a majority to agree. He calculated that it would be better to overthrow the new Republic and re-establish the empire, then to ally with the new Republic.
@owenb8636
@owenb8636 Год назад
A fair criticism of this I've seen is that the empire was so huge that the amount of resources it would have taken to build and crew the ships necessary to police it would have been prohibitive. As it turned out, it still would have been better to invest in the ships but it's understandable why the emperor went the route he did. This is the drawback of running a state without consent of the governed
@alexschorr9551
@alexschorr9551 Год назад
@@owenb8636 that’s more of a reason to build more fleets then. The Death Star can only bring order and control to a single system at a time, and is the biggest target for rebels in the galaxy.

Thrawn has an odd way of knowing the tactical background of a species or a culture, simply by studying their artwork. Paintings, sculpture, mobiles, artisanal weaponry, etc. It is almost as if he has a bit of Force intuition, if I didn't know better. But he has studied art for as long as he has strategy, has drawn a parallel between the two, and he is always right. At one point, he acquired some Mon Calamari art, and a particular piece uniquely accredited to Admiral Ackbar himself.

This video explains why Luke said to Darth Sidious in Episode 6 that "Over Confidence" was 'his' weakness. However, this video proves that it's not just over confidence that led to Sidious' downfall, it was his arrogance towards the fact that he believed that since the Jedi were all but defeated after the Clone Wars, nothing would stand against him, not even the Rebellion or the Force itself. It was also his ignorance towards others who expressed their concerns towards Sidious' plans including Thrawn and Vader. Overall, it was a combination of different factors that led to the downfall of both Sidious and the Empire. Had he heeded the concerns of Thrawn and Vader, the Galactic Civil War would have turned out differently.

A planets leadership may submit, but a chunk of its people may join the rebels, what then? Blow up the planet just because some of them rebeled? Other than that at the end of the day, it is still just one station, that could only be one place at a time. A powerful fleet on the other hand is another story. Centuries ago the Spanish built large ships with multiple rows of cannons along each side, built to overwhelm enemy ships with dozens of shots crashing through the enemy ship it went against. The English decided to build smaller ships with fewer cannons, and lots of them. When the conflict with the Spanish and English came to a head the Spanish sent their fleet into the English Channel to attach the English ports and invade England. The English fleet met them there and the battle begun. The smaller and lighter English ships were also much faster and were able to literally sail circles around the Spanish ships at speeds that made it very hard for the Spanish to time their shots so that they would hit and were further hampered by the fact that their cannons were designed to either hit other ships at a distance or similar sized ships up close. So by getting up close and maneuvering at high speeds and with multiple smaller ships for each smaller Spanish ship, the English were able to put enough holes in the sides of the Spanish ships at the water line that they were able to sink the majority of the Spanish fleet. In an attempt to escape the English and with their path south blocked by the English fleet, the remains Spanish fleet sailed north, right into the stormy North Sea which tore their sails apart which made it impossible for them to maneuver and let waves crashing into their sides roll them over and the seas to crash over the decks and sank the remainder of the Spanish fleet. The English were like small birds going after the fearsome hawk and driving it away, only much deadlier. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uSWcIbNlr9w.html

I think had they stuck to a Clone Army (verified that there were no chips or way for the clones to rebel against the Empire) and opted for an even larger fleet with a "third variant" of the ISDs and more SSDs I think the Empire would've lasted forever. (If they stuck with no more clones then sure more recruit) More flexibility, control, but most importantly presence. It's the presence of the Empire that has the people on its toes. Also, if Palpatine did not disavow the senate I think we would've seen more success. If they had granted access to Imperial Resources (troops/ships in exchange for materials) his Empire would have been secured from a political standpoint as well. The Death Star is really the perfect weapon. The engineered flaw aside (easy to correct), the battle station is better than using the resources for a larger fleet. The simple fear of planetary destruction alone forces planets into submission. It’s too large to attack with capital ships as no one has a fleet big enough to succeed. Vader didn’t like the Death Star because it was ultimately a technological superior over the force. The force is an energy field between all living things and the worlds they exist on. Destroying the worlds, destroys the force.

3:54 i have to disagree with the first half of this statement as i remember reading a comic( I can not remember which one) and in it states that vader also hated the death star program, he also alludes to this thought during the death star meeting in A New Hope, i think he says " the power of this battle station is nothing compared to the power of the force" and i also read somewhere that even the Force itself is against super weapons as well, e.g it guided Reven to the star forge to destroy it( the second time), Luke and friends with both Death stars, and im not sure if this counts because its not a super weapon but a species but the Rekarten Empire fell due some strange Force disease, im on the sidelines with this last one due the the fact that 1. We don't know how they got the disease and 2. They are the ones who built the star forge, my guess is that the force itself diseased the rekartens so that they would lose the ability to touch the force( they were more darkside like the sith purebloods then they were to the light), they were also cannibals, so they would eventually eat themselve to extinction

the death star is a failure from any conceivable viewpoint, i remember vaguely on wookieepedia reading about how the hutts also had planet destroying weapons that used large asteroids as the ammunition, there have existed either a few or many things in the star wars galaxy that can destroy planets and even more, all sidious had to do was scrounge around some old sith ruins to find a bunch of old anti force stuff if he wanted protection from a light side jedi.
@Michael-fb1rl
@Michael-fb1rl Год назад
Ultimately even though Vader made all the wrong sacrifices, he was still proven correct for anyone who for any reason wants power and control to any degree must be willing to sacrifice and be willing to do anything to attain it and keep it. Even Sidious made sacrifices and accepted his consequences for what he wanted, so quite literally they both proved that they indeed earned their power and control, despite not making overall good choices, they at least proved they were "higher, more powerful ", beings because they put their personal relationships and their physical wants on the back burner and valued their long term goals and their loyalty to their power and in essence the Dark sides wishes, because despite Palpatine foolishly thinking he had complete control over the Dark side itself all sith are ultimately subject to the Dark side period and Vader especially during the time of a New hope, he understood that much deeper than Palpatine ever did, mainly just because he never foolishly thought he was actually in control of the Dark side, but instead honored the Dark side and respected its power and it's will, in that way he actually exceeded Palpatine in terms of actual control the only reason he never overpowered Palpatine was because of the sheer amount of knowledge of the Dark side that Palpatine had and the simple fact that Palpatine was taught by one of the most knowledgeable of Sith in Darth Plaugouse. So quite literally if Vader had not been as physically limited as he was he could have very easily overpowered Sidious just in his natural force abilities which in his full power would have literally overshadowed the Emperor in terms of sheer might in the force.

A fleet of ships could easily destroy a planets surface. The total demolition of a world and it's resources makes no sense in terms of effort and cost. @@darbyohara You're looking at things purely from the standpoint of the movies. Even if the empire got the plans back the rebelion would have happened. It was already underway and it was more organized than you think. There is a reason why they were able to form fleets and secure fighters and the like. they operated in cells that were not aware of eachother. The DS may had make the rebels think twice for a few years but that's it. Again the DS is a single asset, even assuming the first one didn't blow up and they had 2 it's still just two assets. Assets that at the end of the day couldn't even be used because if they blew up planets as they pleased more people would rebel. The rebels employed a stateless strategy, the empire would have a VERY hard time beating them because The empire had no real target to attack and the rebels could end up popping up anywhere. At least with a fleet more places could be defended. The share size of the empire makes single powerful assets a foolish thing.

Ah. This actually explains a few things about superweapons in general, when combined with your movie about why the Force (including the Dark Side) hated the Death Star. It was not just a weapon to crush any rebellion. It was a weapon to crush the Force itself, should Darth Sidious consider it neccesary. That would indeed explain the difference in vision between him, Thrawn and Darth Vader. And why he might've considered their visions lacking.

Seems all similar super weapons seem to meet the same fact throughout the universe's history. The Force/Darkside fights back against them and destroy them, I guess because too much death at once isn't like by them, or causes some issue with the Force/Darkside that it finds a way to wipe them from existence every time.
