What I dramatically don't understand is why they don't broadcast challengers' league on the same youtube/twitch channels as LCS. It's really hard to find the NACL broadcast, and it seems like a slam dunk to get more viewers if they just aired it on the LCS channel after LCS.
This, I actually do understand, even if I hate it: they don't want to dilute what it means for that channel to be live. They want people to know that if that channel is live and they click it, they'll be seeing a tier 1 broadcast.
@@Pizzastealingninjanahhh that logically makes sense but in reality you simply do a better job of helping people understand your channels programming. Like any other channel ever
It would pollute their numbers with the LCS channel and they feel if it's not LCS than folks could have more reason to unfollow or remove notifications. I would like us to get the LCS channels for our final (few) playoff matches again like we used to based on your argument :)
Robert Morris University IL gave me a scam degree that I could not find a job with, but I did have fun playing league there... Honestly much love for giving that warning on the pitfalls of collegiate esports
Not through the video yet. But hot take: NACL should put together a summary video from the prior week of what happened. Similar to a highlight video on ESPN. This being played during the broadcast could give hype for the games following LCS. You can use it to help build story lines also.
Translating Travis's point about academy to another industry: It's a loss leader. It loses you money directly so that the overall business can perform better because of the indirect impact. In a grocery store, they'll sell something cheap to get you in the door so that you buy other things that are profitable. In the LCS, you invest in the infrastructure for young talent so that regardless of viewership, there is a clear path to pro that gets better players into pro, raising viewership. The idea makes sense for a healthy business with smart decision-makers controlling the purse. Does the LCS have that? I guess time will tell.
As an esports coach in the high school scene, Tzvi's call is so awesome and hits so home to me - lolesports is not just down in participation PlayVS, but from what I've seen other competing national- and state-level high school leagues. That is just a huge red flag for the longevity of lolesports, let alone the NA LoL playerbase. Roadshows are definitely a lofty endeavor, but there needs to be some push to try and attract younger players. Other educators and colleagues that are esports coaches want to keep our programs alive for the long term future, but some of us are experiencing problems keeping up some of these teams with games not being as popular with younger demographics and then us not being able to field rosters. What Kelsi had mentioned about LoL having one of the biggest barrier to entries is a real concern, though... I know I and other coaches who are trying to start up development programs would be willing to spend time having our students play the game in our labs and learn the ropes if the youth just had a better external opinion of the game.
Realistically there's just no way to make a going on two decades old game suddenly popular in NA with young players. League was never hugely popular in NA to begin with. We've always had one of the smallest playerbases of all the major regions. I'm not really sure what can be done to suddenly fix that. League is just not popular here.
Just a thought on the barrier to entry. Kids in the 2000s had access to extremely popular RTS games as well, which had mechanics that carry over to mobas. Most gamers today have grown up with a controller rather than KBM and something as simple as moving your character in league can feel incredibly foreign.
@@pregnanttomato9576 To that end, that's also why mobile games are extremely popular with kids - touchscreen interfaces interface are what they use for a majority of their day when they aren't home, and probably still do when they are home if they mostly play mobile games rather than PC/console. Mobile esports is definitely not as figured out, especially in the West, but there's definitely a consumer base that could be tapped and engaged with.
Lets be real, if the influencers streamed NACL, and actually cared, they would get views. Caedrel did it for T1 Academy, and lets be real, T1 Academy is a middle to bottom team. But I laughed everytime Poby got his Neeko. Incorporating talent with upandcoming players will build up these players "brand"
1: If you want to scare Travis, just say "ROADSHOW" 2: Travis just subtly telling us HotshotGG died ( he's alive y'all) 3: the common link between this years FLY Roster and EG Roster ( which started the whole 3 Vets/ 2 Rookies) Is Andrew Barton ( and yes Inspired) 4: High school take is the best because if we want to see LCS grow and perform and not just be and entertainment venue for league, we need to invest at our deepest routes and that is HS Esports. 5: I support Kelsey being on every episode of HLL. 6: C9 DOES need their NACL team back 7: CLOL IS THE FUTURE OF NA LEAGUE OF LEGENDS AND SHOULD BE! (it's like crazy that we would like to use EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE to make our product better!) 8: Crazy how Travis says " elephant in the room, I don't pay attention to this stuff" and proceeds to have like 3-5 moments of.. "huh what? How did i not see this?" xD
Post original squad ,if c9 hasn’t had Sven, they have clearly lacked direction completely. Hands capabilities aside how much impact Sven has had on the totality of the team is clear. His dedication to improving, he articulates his thoughts well and is a very outspoken person who provides direction, which is specifically what c9 lacks. Now and when they replaced him for korea9 included.
I'm not 100% sure how the college circuit works, but there is def an idea about waiving a fee for something if the school partners to put on a "lan". Obviously the caller over sold the idea of a "roadshow" but I think it is kind of bad practice to attack the technicality. Because for most of these kids, this might as well be a roadshow.. some of them have never been to an esports event in person let alone participate in one.
Damn first caller has a great point like idk the players but I just imagine Meteos drafting a team I would follow and root for that, like make it a bit like the voice were these guys are coached and work with the team for the whole season. Then put it on the main lcs youtube and I will watch, T2 league are just too hard to find atm.
Regarding Tzvi's (Caller 3: Colleges need to invest in lolesports); Its a cool idea, but I think its got a fundamental oversight that needs to be addressed. This idea is to invigorate League specifically over other esports. However college's have no direct incentive to support or develop League specifically over other games. Giving them a solid reason too is the first thing that needs to be addressed for the idea to have validity. The panel seemed to focus on recruiting but how is League specifically helping recruitment significantly more than other esports programs would. Especially when the idea was prefaced with the caller stating League is in decline at collegiate levels. So well maybe getting the schools to foot the bills for road shows and esports events is a great idea that could be beneficial for everyone. I think other parties, like Riot and esport enthusiasts, first need to provide, or atleast highlight, that incentive/reward for the colleges too choose League as a focal point.
The data that Tzvi is referring to is corroborated across the U.S, including the nonprofit state run leagues. League of Legends is falling in numbers year after year and it is the only esport to do so. The rest are growing, including games like Overwatch.
T2 in the Region (NA) is such a joke while there are valid ways to make it more healthy and productive. NA doesn't have the infrastructure nor interest to promote talent to a T1 level at an acceptable rate....unless people are willing to lower the standards required for NA T1. But on the same token, we as fans can't act surprised when they get bodied during lane phase in international play.
Massu outperformed Berserker on all pro and Sniper got an all pro nod his first split, Busio 1st team all pro split 3, and Yeon and APA hoisted the trophy with a coach from Challengers as well in their 3rd, 2nd, and 1st split respectively.
Let's be honest, if you're watching NA tier 1 it's not because you think it's world-class League. There are plenty of valid reasons you could have for not watching NACL, but that one makes no sense. And let's not conflate a weaker development/practice environment with lack of talent.
I know this is irrelevant but the whole country is in an economic crisis right now. I have a pretty good resume and an MBA and I made 27k total last year, and I'm a much less skilled person compared to an aspiring pro. So for them to make that much while trying to balance life/school/etc is just incredibly hard. No one should gloss over that fact, those are people that are putting their lives on hold to live their dream and I think everyone should be able to relate to that
Travis I love this show, but there’s way too much amateur talk recently, for an amateur league that has no viewership, why do you think ppl wanna hear it here? I’m aware I can fast forward, I’m just sayin.👍
I don't watch amateur either, but I think this is really important because the talent pipeline for the league is broken which endangers the health of the LCS.
First off Travis you’re the man & I love this podcast. I’ve not missed an episode in about three years or more since I started listening.. This whole episode was about college, tier 2, tier 3, high school league… almost nothing about professional league of legends. I didn’t even finish it.. the first episode ive not finished. I don’t know if it’s Cubbys fault for pulling just takes he can relate to. Aka tier, 2 and related topics. Or if the guest also influenced it, or that was the topic you wanted the show to be about. “Pre planned” either way this was a hard listen personally & hopefully we don’t get stuck talking about tier 2, and so on so much! Ether way much love & I’ll still gonna listen to every episode!
