I was a service technician at a Houston area Suzuki dealership when the Busa was first introduced, and I was at the '01 factory update seminar when they announced the gentlemen's agreement. The Suzuki factory rep said that fear of government regulation was not the sole reason for limiting speed, the AMA and FIM told the manufacturers they were getting out of control and that 300 Km/Hr was the fastest that a motorcycle could go in a road-racing competition setting. They were also aware that it took most of us about 5 minutes to figure out how to override the speed limiter. One of the first changes they had to make to Busa engine was the cam chain tensioner. The first ones were ratcheting automatics and some failed, ended up bending the valves and occasionally breaking the crankshaft. The second ones were manual and some had the same results. The final recall repair kit came in 2001. In that kit was a new cam chain guide and new tensioner that was designed to use oil pressure provided by a hose that we had connect to the front oil galley via a banjo bolt, and two zip ties to prevent the cam chain from jumping when the kit was installed. One side note is that most of the broken crankshaft repairs I made out of warranty ended up stroker kits. I look back on those days and I'm amazed I'm over 50 years old now.

Radical also uses the stock 1340 Hayabusa in SR3's and SR1's. They also make a bespoke 1500 stroker Busa motor that pushes out 220 at the crank. The SR8 used a macro block V8 with stock cylinder barrels and heads from the Hayabusa spanning from 2.6-3.2 litre V8 that revs up to 10,500 RPM!

@Bed of Fire or Decompose unfortunately due to the high stress on the motor/transmission (both in the same casing when you're talking just the haybusa) reliability is a bigger problem. 1500cc motors only get around 60 hours of life. This is mainly a timeline based on transmission life

The ZX11 / ZZ-R 1100 was an extremely fast bike in its prime... Some of the C models I've heard had a few issues mainly in regards to the gearbox. Apparently the original gearbox couldn't handle the torque at the time and if the bike was rammed from pull it sometimes jumped out of 2nd gear. Bearing in mind that the ZX11 is basically it's predecessor's engine which was the ZX10 TOMCAT just with a displacement increase along with minor engine upgrades. From the ' D ' model that was launched in early 93' those issues were eliminated but the bike now was quite a bit heavier with a more sleeker appearance and with a twin ram air system induction system which ( apparently ) made up for the added weight and a softer rear suspension and increase width on the rear wheel from a 17 inch up to an 18 inch which caused the bike to be more of a hyper sports tourer than its previous model but even faster at the redline... I have much respect for the ZZ-R 1100.
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk Год назад
Funny that they'd retard it,if you meant just the cam timing ,that'll add up top and take from down low. Nothing's impossible,if all they did was retard can timing I'd bet some machine work can get that back for you.
@coache1nine
@coache1nine Год назад
@@MrTheHillfolk it's the opposite. Retarded timing increases bottom end, taking away from the top. That, along with the change in camshafts, decreased top end. Their desired goal.

My Blackbird was stolen twice. When it was recovered the second time, it fit on a shipping pallet. Something major must have happened for it to get that mangled. I low-key hope it wrote the final chapter in the person who stole it their life. I use to take it to the track. The other riders said I looked like Hailey’s Comet as I threw sparks. The Blackbird wasn’t designed for the track as everything was placed low. Insurance gave me enough to buy an older F3 (600cc). It was a great track bike. It would overheat if I let it idle for too long. I usually parked it the back alley, but my landlord decided to re-pave the parking spots. The first night it was parked on the street, a drunk woman in a minivan hit everything on my side of the street. Cars were pushed into cars & a car was pushed into my bike. She didn’t have insurance and there were at least a dozen cars with significant damage. I was SOL.

I have a real pretty copper 99 busa. By far my favorite bike ever, I can’t wait to turbo it. The power is already insane. I’ve also owned a 93 zx11, still had the power to snap your neck back. A zx12r would be fun too lol

In my younger days I rode a turbocharged and intercooled BMW K75s that developed 170hp. It topped out at 173mph and change and since the speedo didn't go that high, I had to measure the circ of the rear tire and do the math to get my very top speed from the RPM and final drive ratio. I worked at Luftmeister in Paramount CA and lived in Simi Valley and my run to work was at triple digits every. single. day. Work started at 10am so I had the road to myself, mostly. Fun times. I'd like to get my paws on one of these Hayabusas and wring it out across Montana.
@1crazypj
@1crazypj Год назад
That is probably the best way to work out theoretical top speed, you will probably have a little clutch 'creep' and tyre drag but it should be close. I did the same years ago after I had my 490 Maico topped out on a firebreak in the woods, worked out around 130mph which was much too fast on dirt track less than 2ft wide

Depends some on how you ride. The busa is longer and heavier than the smaller sport bikes. Makes them stable and pretty comfortable. They actually make pretty good touring bikes. And, the large powerband can make them really nice to ride since you have power in any gear at almost any rpm. Often they didn’t get many miles since they it seems most were bought for show. They’d get pulled out every so often to show off then put away again.

Low compression and high engine displacement is the key. Stroker and big bore kit would made it even monster of an engine.
@kovacevd
@kovacevd Год назад
No .... 4 cylinder reving to 10.5k rpm stroke it and big bore and see if it can rev to 10.5k susuki know what there doing, you dont. They spent lots of money and time making the most powerfull bike engine, you didn't.
@DersNoNem
@DersNoNem Год назад
@@kovacevd who is this susuki that I have never heard of? 'Suzuki' doing the research for long term and reliability. You can still do high revolution with bigger bore, long stroke is the challenge. Also having bigger stroke means bigger displacement, so force induction can be introduced. Making the cylinder bigger by those methods means lower compression ratio.
