In the fourth round of the FIDE World Rapid Championship 2023, GM Parham Maghsoodloo (2644) was up against GM Magnus Carlsen (2818). Though Magnus was winning at one part of the game, a blunder by the World No. 1 gave Parham a chance to equalize the game. But as the game reached its conclusion, something happened that surprised Magnus.

Explanation for beginners: If you dont move 50 moves a pawn or capture a piece - it will be a draw due to 50-moves-rule. Last pawn move was on move 47. Game ended on move 87. Parham tried to claim 50 moves. Magnus understood within seconds, that there were only 40 moves.

Imagine how it was to play rapid in era when there were not DGT boards and proper chess software for computers. In 1988 FIDE organized so called "Active chess world championships " with rapid time control and Karpov won it. Kasparpv was upset, he did not play there and said ; "If Karpov is active chess champion who am I then ? Passive champ ?" I am pretty sure they did not have DGT boards back then and players did not have enough time to write moves on scoresheet.Perhaps they put arbiter next to every board to write down moves ? in 1998 Elista Olympiad FIDE first used more than 300 DGT boards in big tournament and is using since then in every important event.

Originally there was no such rule, and frankly the rule is slightly dubious in how it helps the chess game itself. It was brought in because, from a tournament structure perspective, you don't want really want games that could potentially go on for many more than 150 moves, and absolutely don't want potential games where both players are just trying to wait for the opponent to blunder mentally first in drawn positions just because they refuse to agree to a draw. The few games that have gone over 200 moves in these settings, especially if it started in the afternoon, tend to go on way too long (heavily impacting the next day of playing for both players) and be incredibly dull to watch. So, the theory goes, if neither side makes a single capture or pawn move for 50 moves straight, then there must not be any advantage to convert (as a good player would have made such progress substantially within 50 moves) and the game is drawn. Of course, things are rarely that theoretical. It is possible to make a positional mistake that doesn't lose material but still loses the game, but if you are close to the 50 move rule the game is still maybe drawn. Or you could be objectively winning and simply be having trouble with a difficult pattern that you will eventually get (a few tournaments back Super GrandMaster Nepo found himself in a Queen vs Rook situation, which is winning for the Queen but with a very tricky pattern, which Nepo seemingly couldn't precisely recall. But part of the stress that made Nepo fail to win (via 50 move rule draw) was that it is a very long pattern even when correct and 50 moves was looming over him. Or you could simply argue that chess "should" be about mental stamina, and if you think you have a slight advantage you should be able to try and grind out a win, and not stopped because you are using too many moves to do so. At the end of the day it has many flaws and can be situationally positive but is really designed to restrict statistical outliers that could interfere with tournament priorities, at the cost of sometimes drawing winning games.
@flacsomtodosclas2165
@flacsomtodosclas2165 4 месяца назад
@@rowanmales3430bruh this rules was made so people wouldnt keep playing in an dead draw position for hours just to try stalling the opponent clock saying it dosent help is absurd because in a general level of chess there is a lot of toxic kids who would try that.
@rowanmales3430
@rowanmales3430 4 месяца назад
@@flacsomtodosclas2165 ...And that is a problem? If it is a dead drawn position, but someone wants to play on and hope for a blunder, why should that not be allowed? It is only a "drawn position" with perfect play after all, and humans are not perfect. You also risk being the one to blunder instead. Also, there is a natural end based on 3-Fold Repetition draw which you are ignoring which stops the exact same position being played endlessly. So long as you can keep posing NEW positions to your opponent, your opponent should be required to choose how to defend that position. Seems pretty obviously correct to me.

At 8:35 if Magnus had played Nxf3 with the follow-up gxf3 Rxf3 Kg2 Rxf4, he could have kept the winning advantage… I think. Instead Nc2 allowed Maghsoodloo to equalise.

*Even if you didn't look at the cheat engine, it's harder to play moves when on the clock, running out of time and under pressure. Otherwise, Magnus is known for getting the best move, 100% correct moves all the time.* *Something you and I will never be able to do in our life time.*

@@radicalrick9587 I am not criticising Magnus. I am a big fan of him. And I did not look at the engine. I just paused and analysed at the critical juncture when I saw the evaluation bar jump back to almost equal from a winning position. Which meant that he missed a tactic. I am just bringing out the better move for the other viewers of the channel. If you can stop judging me, you will see that I was not looking down at Magnus but instead inviting a discussion about the correct move for fellow chess lovers.

I think if there is no pawn move untill some thing like 40 moves (I am not sure) it is draw. And that is why praham did not chop the f5 pawn by knight. No harm in it. But if he did so praham had the winning chance. But he wanted a draw desperately. I may b wrong.

if he wouldve taken the pawn on f5 it's lost for him, his knight will get trap, he had only d6 for his knight to return in the game but magnus blocked it with the rook xd he tried thru e8 to go back in the game but as you saw didn't work

you are wrong in both statements, it's the 50 moves rule, and taking the pawn would still be losing as you can see by the engine bar evaluation on the right. He did not take the pawn cause he understood it and instead tried to get some more moves in to approach 50 without pawn moves and captures

three fold must be claimed exactly at the moment you repeated three times, you cant claim later, and even so, I'm pretty sure it didn't happen, Magnus was keeping track of the squares he was using with the rook

Is it clear? In 19:22 Magnus put the kings on white center squares. So he claimed the win. But then the sneaky Parham said in 19:26 - 19:36 Nope, I take a draw home, as he puts them on black and white squares in opposition. Magnus felt to the aggressive style of sneakiness, so at the end Magnus give up and put the kings on the white squares and resigned 19:48. The result is clear 20:00. - So don’t mess with Parham. When he is hungry for a draw, he is always winning.

Can someone explain why Maghsoodloo put the Knight on d6 square.? Is it so easy to make a draw by keeping the Knight on g6. He can make the Knight jumping around g6 and move the King around g3 pawn. Should it be a draw? Did he lose because of timing pressure?

Can someone just answer the damn question if Magnus won, lost, or if the game was a draw? Comments so far are all over the place and don't say one way or the other. I'm not a chess aficionado, so I don't understand if someone won or if it's still a draw. I understand Parham THOUGHT it was a draw due to the 50-move rule, but it wasn't, so does Magnus still win? Does it still draw? Why did Magnus put the kings on black, but Parham move it back? WHO WON?
