Why we can get overwhelmed when we start healing our trauma

A common thing that happens when we begin excavating old traumas at the somatic level is a sense of overwhelm. From my experience this can be due to a few things, and while this week’s vlog doesn’t cover each and every aspect of why someone might feel overwhelmed when they begin their healing trauma journey … at this nervous system level ... know that this is a starting point, so c’mon over and dive in.

I am so grateful for this! It’s exactly where I’m at. Been doing so well, then, bam. I did feel overwhelmed and shut down. Bla, no energy, pessimistic, etc. Freeze. My issues are in my tissues. How comforting to know this is part of it. So good. It’s part of the process.

Wow - so incredible to have found this. After several years of emdr and good training/tools to do all my shadow work (the more inner layers of the onion)…last year, I was journaling because I was angry about the issues and environment and caregivers who contributed to cptsd when I was young. Even in my 30s, 40s and 50s I didn’t know I even had anger - I was so disconnected and codependent. I have been in the midst of a physical and lifestyle change already and the anger was ready to come out. When it did, it was a tsunami. That’s exactly what I called it not having heard these videos before. I had my first panic attack. Others in my family have too so I tried to focus my awareness on the symptoms and what I needed to do. It was SO huge. But I got thru it. And I remember asking the Universe/God and my inner knowing to please, let’s parcel this out so I can manage it better. And that’s what happened!! Being in those “small waves” of overwhelm are not comfortable but i am safe and my husband understands (later I talk with him about it) and supports me. I am learning in the more manageable overwhelm parcels that I’ve needed to heal the shame and need to apologize for feeling so disruptive and out of control. I also keep reassuring myself that I NEED to feel this and in identifying the pain and shame coming out for being authentically angry, I am letting it go. I’ve also noticed some somatic work spontaneously occurring. Which tells me it is closer on the surface and this movement is letting it go from my body too. This work can feel like overwhelm and it takes courage to walk thru it. And I feel so rewarded and grateful each time one of those parcels has dissolved. And I get some time in between of peace and calm. Thankful for Irene Lyon videos arriving in my feed at the right time. ❤

This is a very very helpful video! Being reminded to pause, name it, ask the body what it wants to do, and etc. is a great reminder. It's so easy to forget when unbearable feelings come up. 💙

Opening Pandora’s box…makes sense dealing with overwhelm and learning new internal boundaries to regulate. I’m learning to create internal safety by paying attention to my physiology and processing trauma slowly… building the muscle takes time, and there are no shortcuts. Painful work coming out of freeze and loosening long held protective patterns, and gaining a little more strength each day is slowly expanding my capacity to be in discomfort while maintaining my presence. It is the road less travelled.

My usual response is not psychological but physical and very bad, for instance, anxiety (never suffer from it before), pancreatitis, crippling low back pain and unbelievable tiredness. That has happened to me with hypnosis, EMDR and Somatic. Every single doctor and therapist told me that they would go very slow. But, nevertheless... Well, I am quite scared and sad with no hope for recovery because it means so many days at the hospital as well.

So true, facing your own truth is challenging. The rewards of a healthy life are worth it. A similar thing I see often, those healing make life changes, and those changes affect the people in your life. Often those support systems don't want you to heal. People want the predictable patterns they know over your new healthier patterning in life. Often this strains relationships.

Thanks for this reminder Irene. Makes so much sense why my Psychologist specialising in Somatic Experiencing who I've been seeing for the past 15 months now, keeps sending me off after a session with primarily this one piece of advise 'SLOW RIGHT DOWN!'. Have definitely made great progress but it's been incredibly gruelling at times.

I've done the 21 day tune up which has been helpful. But I find I have been tuning into on occasion this annihilation emotion/feeling/energy which manifests as some despair and the thought attached is a brief 'I wanna die'. It basically feels like emotional agony/pain. It's intense. I feel it and use the exercises but it's overwhelming and scary.

Wonderful explanations Irene. I’ve been working with your information and resources for the past few months. Every day I sit down and do the orienting. I shoot for three times a day. It’s always the most uncomfortable when I start. I just remind myself that if I just follow the steps, I will feel better at the end of it. I usually do 12 minutes at a time. I also say a prayer. Every single time by the end of the 12 minutes, my system has noticeably calmed down. Of course my system always wants to go back to the previous state of flight, fight, freeze, but I can tell that if I just keep at it, there’s progress being made. Just doing this has been a lifesaver. Literally. Thank you so much. 🌼❤️

Is it normal to feel overwhelmed for months with these survival energies? It all started with a panic attack that I had in May...Since then I feel like I had 1000 of them. I crave answers so much yet it seems that nobody has any. The funny thing is, before this happened, I have been intentionally dealing with all my pain for 6 years, focusing so much on healing, loving, and taking care of myself on all levels. Now I feel so overwhelmed that I feel like I even cant relax, I mean I really can but it doesn't matter cause I am so sensitive that I feel all the shit no matter what I do, so even distraction is difficult... its as if I am spinning in circles... it's so weird...any ideas what the hell is going on?

Yeah, that happens to me too!I want to start with a little waves but it seems that I get thrown into the tsunami. Sending warm feelings, camaraderie, and hugs. I’ve heard it’s said that this work is not just about the end result and the healing, but all the little steps in between. In other words, the journey is just As important as the destination.

Is this related to the fact that some of us are unable to work during the beginning of this process? I’ve had anxiety with working for a long time but it came to a head about a year ago, at the same time that I stopped using my main coping mechanism. I was fired from my job for too many absences, and the truth is, I was so overwhelmed by anxiety attacks that I don’t know how I would have been able to continue anyway. I could barely get out of bed and make meals for several weeks. I had to go on disability and get help from my family. And now I am afraid to go back to work because what if the stress of it shoots me out of my window of tolerance and I regress? Sometimes I wonder if that’s why more people don’t do this work - they HAVE to go to work and make money and they can’t afford to risk letting this stuff come up and disrupting that.

SBSM student here... Thank you for the information, much needed! I have a question since you mention the darkness/shadow aspect of healing, how does the Dark Night Of The Soul relate to doing this work?
@teamlyon3109
@teamlyon3109 3 года назад
Hi Pack & Click, great to hear you're an SBSM student! Jen here from Team Lyon. I think someone could probably write a book in response to your question. Some people use the term "Dark Night of the Soul" generally and it has a specific meaning related to Catholicism. That is not my area of expertise, and from what I understand (simply put) it involves finding oneself in darkness where the only light in this dark night is the light that burns in the soul and the journey ultimately leads to divine union with God. I'd invite you to explore this question for yourself as you move through SBSM, and in my experience the nervous system work can be connected in that sometimes the pain of the experience of living for a lifetime with trauma can lead one into a sort of dark night experience, and in doing the work one can start to find the light in the soul. Growing regulation also tends to give us more access to spiritual and mystical states. Seth speaks to this briefly in the SmartBody SmartMind Q&A call from last week. Hope this gives you some food for thought!
@PackClickSite

@@teamlyon3109 Hi Jen! Yes, lots of food for thought about how everything is connected for sure. Thank you for your reply. Looking forward to continuing doing the work (as painful as it is) to find that light within. Have a good day!

My inner stuff goes to me during the night . I have a dreams /nightmare sometimes/ and then it wakes me up. I have very few seconds to get to presence & appropriate mindset and for sure I fail sometimes, cause strong emotions are already on. Probably I react as a newborn... I wonder if it is possible that this way it retraumatizes me? I am aware that probably it is very early trauma. Maybe you have a good advice for that? I would appreciate your answer so much.
@IreneLyon
@IreneLyon 2 года назад
Hi Jagna Soul, Seth here with Team Lyon. It probably isn't retraumatizing you to wake up in the midst of strong emotions, more likely you are simply experiencing the trauma you are already holding. As far as advice goes I've got two answers - practical steps to do in the moment, and bigger picture. For the first piece, try out the steps in this free eBook from Irene the next time you wake up like this. This PDF has a link to an audio file of Irene walking you through these steps, so you can download that and put it on a mp3 player or your phone so it's right by your bed. Just press play when you wake up and follow along... irenelyon.com/4-steps-to-calm-overwhelm/ Big picture... You need to do the larger work to resolve the trauma and restore regulation to your nervous system. When it comes to working with trauma of all kinds, early/developmental trauma included, there are some key things that need to be in place... 1. Education so that we understand what is happening physiologically which helps increase our sense of safety and opens the door to finding other options. 2. Practical tools that give us new ways of listening, understanding, and working with our entire being. 3. Profession support from qualified practitioners. 4. A safe enough home environment in which to learn and practice the above. If you have this last piece, we can provide the first three! Irene's 12 week program, SmartBody SmartMind is open for registration until the end of the day tomorrow. We only run this powerful online group program once a year, so you have good timing. That is honestly the best thing I can advise for working with what's happening at night for you. Private sessions with a good practitioner are great too, so if you can find one that would also be a good way to go, it's just that they are hard to find! Which is a big part of why Irene created this world of online resources and programs. Here's some links that may be helpful for you... Hi sandstone_block, Jen here from Team Lyon. Feelings of derealization are usually a sign that the nervous system is over it's capacity and is in freeze/conservation mode.
