Why we check governor spring screws in our Gramophone/phonograph motors.

Two loose screws in the steamship sticker HMV-102's motor, one was just about to come out. Not cross threaded, just loose, unknown reason why, could be from the factory, or someone replaced a spring 50 years ago and missed a screw. Always make sure the screws are snug on these while you are giving it a clean and inspection.

I appreciate your devotion to good governor operation. It is much more critical on cylinder players, all of which suffer from the lack of a dampening flywheel like a turntable. The huge majority of cylinder players demonstrated on you tube suffer horribly from neglected governors, and several times the horrible wobbly sound is being blamed on a bad cylinder. Every machine I own, and any that I have looked at for friends, got a complete going over of the governor. Thank you for your tutorial

Governor problems can cause erratic speed on disc players also. This is mostly due to weak springs, including some of the new replacements. I once had to double up the springs to get them strong enough to operate correctly. That supplier later improved the quality of the product.

Hey so I found my dads old 240D gramophone and it’s in really bad condition so I started to restore it. I checked the spring which is alright and greased all the parts. However I think there is a problem with the governor cuz it makes a grinding noise after some time and the clutch like thing doesn’t lean on the speed controller which I also noticed before taking it apart. I just wanted to know if I can fix this at home or do I need a new one?

Best thing to do right now is take some good pictures of the motor, and the problem areas . Send them to my email rockisland1903victrola@gmail.com So I can see what's going on. Could be something is frozen, or worn, Body of the governor is able to freely move on the governor shaft? The body is the brass part with the springs and weights on it, the shaft is what it is slid on to and secured with a set screw. These parts can lock up with dry oil, and then speed regulation is impossible. The shaft the friction leather ( or felt) is attached to can also freeze up. Sometimes that set screw on holding the governor body to the shaft can get loose causing the body to move enough to contact the gear attached to the main shaft. Pictures, video if you can, the more detailed the better. Hard to say what stuff might be when it's not apart in front of me.

@@Rockisland1903 sorry for the late reply but for some reason I can’t send you to that email.

There isn't much I can do without seeing the problem. You could try and make a video of it and post it on your channel. Be as detailed as possible and use good lighting on the problem.

@@Rockisland1903 Hi, sorry so I took the governor out and it’s seized to the shaft....I tried removing it from the shaft but it’s really stuck there. Is there anyway I can fix it or do I need to find a working one? Thanks.

Soak the shaft in penetrating oil , leave it soaking for a week if you have to. Remember that the brass governor weight assembly only moves on one end of the shaft, the other is retained in place with a small set screw. The end with the disk that the friction leather rides on will move a short distance on the shaft. The end that is closest to the gears has the set screw. Be very careful in moving the disk end on the shaft, only move it a little bit or you could snap one of the governor weight springs. Get it to slide on the shaft the space of twice the thickness of the disk. On the end of each shaft where it connects to the body of the motor are the bearing caps. Inside each bearing cap is a small ball bearing that tends to be stuck, but not always. Don't lose these ball bearings. I remove the caps and put them in a sealed plastic pill container with some strong solvent, then shake the container vigorously until the ball bearings have loosened and come out. I then put the now loose ball bearings back inside the bearing cap with some grease over the top to hold them in place. If one cap has a groove around the outside that one goes nearest the gears. The groove it for the retaining screw to set into as this side you do not adjust. The other end you adjust to have a small bit of endplay. Endplay about the thickness of two business cards will do.

I have a weird knocking sound that I believe is from a dry leather pad for the governor what do you think I can do???

No broken governor springs? Could be the leather wore down causing the governor to spin too fast, when this happens the weights can extend by centrifugal force out far enough to hit the bottom of the motorboard. If the leather is intact just oiling it should be OK, but you can replace it. Not easy, you will be taking the motor apart so you might as well do a full service on it. The leather is the same diameter as found on Singer sewing machine leather belts, you just snip off a piece large enough to use. The belts aren't expensive and can be found on eBay, same is also used for the brake leather. One belt will last a Victrola 500 years or so of regular servicing. I assume the sound is constant so long as the machine is playing? If so then the governor is the place to look, if it's just every now and then, and more of a shuddering rumble then the springs are dry inside the spring barrels. Either way you are doing a full service on the motor, needs to be done anyway if you haven't done so in the last few decades.

@@Rockisland1903 my hmv 102 was completely restored from the UK but after I got it after a few days it started doing the noise but I believe it is the a dry and old governor leather felt

I opened the gramophone and everything was completely normal but the leather felt for the governor looms dry should I get some sand paper and scrub the leather and put oil on it.
@Rockisland1903

NO! No sandpaper, that is not leather at all, it is a felt pad. Just oil it and see what happens. With the motorboard out of the case wind the spring a bit and watch the motor to see exactly what is causing the noise. Everything on the motor is exposed for you to see, you should be able to pinpoint the sound.

Yea, I remember the last time someone brought me a "fully restored" 102 they bought from a UK dealer. Lets just say I have a different standard of what I consider a full motor service than they do. Pull the motor, go over everything yourself to make sure it's done
