37 years ago, my parents converted an old ups truck into a tiny home and we lived in the redwoods above the smith river in California. We moved back into town so I could start school and my parents ended up getting a divorce. My mother always said that if she had known about homeschooling, we never would have left and she feels that her marriage would have lasted. My father was an alcoholic and being in the mountains meant he was sober. We were happy. I miss those times so much. Over the years I have lived a nomadic lifestyle. I am currently living in a house with the love of my life and our three children. We have a scamp trailer that we bought for 1500.00 and are fixing it up. Maybe we will live in it later on, but for now, it’s an amazing escape. I love your vision and your videos, best of luck to you both. Blessed be.

I know this is an older video but it's really great to see the thought process behind your decision and how it's mirroring my thought process. I went from thinking of buying a fixer-upper > buying land and building a house > buying land and having a tiny house on it > towing the house around > buying an RV/Van. I'm still super undecided but I'm realizing why so many people are choosing to live off-grid when even when you own land/house, you're still subject to the city/county/state as your landlord.

I had a 1988 16ft Scamp and it had a small restroom with the option to install a shower we did not install a shower since most r.v parks have showers and rest rooms. We also camped with our 12 & 8 year old children and the front sofa converted into a bunk bed. Our Scamp was loaded with almost every option it even had a small awning. The kids finally out grew the bunks and I used it out at my deer camp for several years. I sold it for what I bought it for 6.5 years later . It was a very good starter camper.

Awesome video! We had a 1981 Scamp 16’ for about 3 years - about 95% re-did it and had a blast in it. Made what we had into it back when we sold it (needed a larger bed as our dog is bigger than your dog) so yep - they definitely hold their value! And my husband would have our dog and me sit on the bed so he could hand maneuver it. We have a slightly larger trailer now but still under 20’ so can fit where we want!

So glad I clicked. Basically been looking for a way to live out of the box so can rent out or sale the house. Found some tiny houses built to code for city/state dwelling and been binge watching Kirsten Dirksen channel seeing how ppl all over world build modular contained furniture and build out tiny spaces or even larger spaces efficiently (def check it out, opens up all kinds possibilities for future ideas!). Tiny house can rent out later on as cool place but so expensive and iffy on where it can go like you said. As of yesterday someone finally convinced me to look at airstream or small RVs and so thankful for your whole thought process and thorough video of what REALLY goes into these decisions. Thank you!

If you ever do think you need more room, then I would suggest a good used Van. It would double your living space and give you 2 rooms. You could also buy a Thetford chemical toilet to keep in the van. I currently drive a GMC Savanah Van which has about as much space as your camper...and I have been contemplating a tiny camper. I think this would be the perfect setup.

My husband and I have been together for 7 years and have been talking about tiny living ever since. Unfortunately we've needed to live with my grandparents while I heal from chronic illness for the past 4 of those 7 years, but now that I am feeling better, I'm binge watching all your videos. Our obstacles right now are figuring out how to feed ourselves with so many dietary restrictions, getting solid on location-independent income and where we will do laundry (I have chemical sensitivity so public laundry just won't work). When we figure that out then we have savings so I hope it will all work out. That was longer than I expected, but in essence THANK YOU.

There are tiny clothes washers that easily fit under cabinet when not in use. Sensitivity to chemicals and dirty air is a challenge. Keeping the interior of my boler is a snap . . . And I have two dogs. If you want to try out camper living, there are a (few) that can be rented. And don't think you cannot find an inexpensive one to buy. But these often present challenges because of their age. But there are more new campers than ever now. Ironically, I lived in a van for a few years and found the lack of space to be so confining and depressing, I was thinking about moving back to a stix & brix house once again. Then, I started looking at small Casitas, Scamps, and small travel trailers like what Jayco makes. It turns out, you can buy a brand new Jayco (or other brand small trailer like Coleman) for the same price of an old wiped out Casitia or Scamp! I went with a 154 Bunkhouse that has a kitchen, full bath room with a tub, , a full kitchen with a stove top, microwave, hot water, food prep area, dining area, heat, air conditioning, TV/entertainment system, and a built-in monitor to keep an eye on all systems and levels - that only weighed 2500 lbs.! It's easily towable with my small S10 4x4 pickup truck, and I can leave my small home just about anywhere (safe), and go into town, run errands, or get it repaired without losing my living quarters. Towing a small trailer that provides ALL the amenities and is designed for travel and living efficiently in a small space is head and shoulders above living in 50 square foot van - ANY DAY! The only drawback, is the whole stealth travel thing goes out the window once and for all.

My sister & her husband lived in a Fifth Wheel for about 5 years. His job took him all over so they just drove their "house" to the next job & stayed at RV parks. Their Fifth Wheel had pop outs which made it bigger, 2 plush recliners inside, a bathroom with a shower of course & was plenty big enough for the 2 of them & the baby. Me personally - I could handle living full time in a Fifth Wheel or a Tiny House. I'd actually love it! But Scamps....not so much. They're just way too small & claustrophobic for my taste. Tho I admire anyone who can live in a Scamp full time!

If you are similar mobile, or even better if you are stationary, check out videos on sand heaters. The nifty thing is anything that is metal will work to build one out of. A metal pail $15, playground sand $5, and 12 volt solar panel $22, and a 12 volt immersion heater $7 is about the cheapest you can build My first was put into a 14" tall SPARK pot bellied stove with 2 immersion coils to heat a coffee cup (just about any truck stop or online from Walmart) That one now heats the main the kitchen. The second was my 30" tall Buck Warner with two 12 volt water heater units. I stir the heat with a heat activated stove fan. And I've cooked on it and I can also put my ceramic coated coffee cup on it. That one in the LR gets the room so hot the cat goes outside 😅 Oh, and those pot bellied stoves are always a topic of interest in conversation. The little SPARK goes with us when we venture out in the boler Camper. Best of luck to you

Wow! That gives me a “light bulb moment”! In the late eighties.. and into the early nineties, we owned a small used “70’s style” trailer that was 13 ft. The “bathroom” was actually just a closet with a porta-potty. Since we didn’t want to clean it .. we NEVER used it. I’ve been thinking if something like a 17 ft trailer that gad a “real” bathroom.. but maybe your idea is better! Good tip: look into fiberglass trailers. Thanks. So many “conventional” trailers end up with roof problems.. I would rather avoid that. The aluminum Airstreams seem solid .. but they are wicked expensive .. but seem to hold their value very good.

I think I’ve found my “bliss” narrowed down to either a version of the Sprinter (not the Mercedes ugh) or a mini scamp travel trailer. I’m going to watch more of your videos whilst trying to cool off in my full time Hyundai Minivan home. Thanks you two angels🌹💗

Thanks for a great story. I really enjoyed it. We loved our little Scamp, and towed it all over for three years. Our only problem with it was that we could never minimize enough to make it viable, and we were just vacationing in it, not living ini it. That’s what I admire about you two so much, your commitment to downsizing, minimizing, and making it happen, through ingenuity, creativity, sacrifice, and hard work. You have truly set yourselves free. Way to go! Good Vibrations

You two are adorable!! I would love to "sell" my 19 year old son on the idea of living in a small trailer that he can pull with his Jeep. It seems like such a perfect solution for a young college student who refuses to live in a dorm. I am going to show him this video, someday, when he's in the right mood :D Ha!

That's awesome! Its our first week of living in a trailer ourselves, its a 16ft trailer which includes the bed pop outs on either side and it was only $2000! a bit of floor damage which was patched up but were living in it parked on a lovely piece of property. Definitely an interesting and fun experience!

MrBrian...I learned so much about people after over 30 years in sales and and dealing with over 20,000 people as a former small business owner. I can now very accurately see the mannerisms that real down to earth people have. I'm only a few minutes into the video. I see so much consistent traits that this couple is so genuine early on in their presentation.

You two are totally cool. So glad that you decided to buck the societal norms, and chose your own path rather than what people think "you're supposed to do". You're creating memories that will last for (unfortunately) too short a life on this emerald orb. Make them great, and keep truckin'. It's how we meet and deal with adversity along the way that brings us true strength and confidence to do the things we never thought we could. I'm an immediate fan.

I hope the two of you don’t lose sight of the fact that people sacrificed so much to give you life, and the special times you’re having in your trailer. Life MUST be paid forward! And to do that, you’ll either need a conventional home or a much bigger trailer!

Yes! If you're not familiar with the famous actor Robby Benson, look him up; this guy Baron looks so much like him! Most people are likely to know Robby Benson as the voice as The Beast in the original Disney animated version of Beauty and The Beast, but he also was a teen heartthrob film and TV actor back in the 70s and early 80s. Just like this guy, dark hair, striking blue eyes! Even as an older actor/producer/acting teacher, he's very handsome. Baron seriously looks like he could be his son!

Over the years I HAVE added the Dreamtime super deluxe thermarest along with an extra foam pad. Have a $44 nylon canopy for putting over a picnic table when it rains (Living in the NW that means every time camping out pretty much!) Just went to a NW Mushroom Association foray up at Mt. Baker and saw someone had a Scamp. It looked really appealing...I like the idea of being in an indoor place for cooking and with ready heat..

That's a good idea to not have a bathroom. I agree with your thoughts unless you are like me. I have Crohnes Disease and have to have a bathroom in my trailer. I'm planning my van and cargo trailer builds around the bathroom necessity. My advice for anyone looking into this life is to find what is necessary for you to live the life you choose and model your build or purchase around that necessity.

Same can be said of camping with a child. When my daughter announces that she has to use the restroom and we're on a horrendously long stretch of road with no gas stations, businesses or rest areas in sight, pulling off to the side to open the trailer and let her have at it is a God-send!
