If your sponsors don’t understand a medical emergency causing delays and aren’t willing to work with you, they probably aren’t a sponsor you want anyway. It says a lot about their business practices.

Right when Evan started talking, I was like, "I recognize that voice change. He was intubated." My wife's had more than a few surgeries, and I can now tell when they've had to intubate her just by how she's talking after she wakes up. Sucks that you had appendicitis, Evan, but glad you got it dealt with before it fully ruptured. Be well.

Sometimes a high pain tolerance can get you into trouble. My mom once went in for unrelated abdominal surgery, and they found that her appendix had ruptured and healed years ago. Without going into detail, it was a crazy nightmare of abdominal adhesions (organs being "glued" together by the scar tissue). They had no idea how long ago it burst, or how she survived it, or why she didn't feel it, but she felt a lot better after it was all sorted out. I'm glad the messy part is behind you. May your recovery be peaceful and relaxed.

I have so many "been there, done that" reactions pinging around my brain right now... my appendix ruptured ten years ago, and we thus discovered I have a high pain tolerance too: based on the mess the surgeon found inside me, it had ruptured 5 days before surgery, which means I had gone for a 2 hour horse back trail ride and weekend road trip with said ruptured appendix. I do want to point out that it hurt like the Dickens. "High pain tolerance" must not be confused with "high pain threshold", which seems to be what some people are describing in some of these comments. I felt all of the pain, intensely; I just gaslit myself into believing I was just being a big baby and to just suck it up and stop whining, until I finally decided *maybe* I should consult my family doctor about it, just in case... It's only in post-op when the surgeon said that I was "one very lucky young lady to be alive" that what had happened finally sank in.

I suffered with gallstones for over a year because when I’d go to doctors (I visited multiple) they’d tell me it was other things. So I actually went on vacation with those pains. Also, I think most people don’t rush to the dr immediately if they aren’t feeling well they usually try to wait a little while to see if it passes. That is rough. I went through three years of ongoing pain and issues. I changed doctors and did research to what could be causing the pain. I then just asked my Dr. to check my gallbladder for stones. I had some stones, and right before I was to go in for surgery, my gallbladder decided to have an attack. The anesthesiologist saw me rubbing my left shoulder. So, I ended up in the hospital for two days so they could check my heart to be sure it was ok. Esp since my EKG still shows I had a heart attack. LOL also my Mom, sister and I had our gallbladders out in reverse order to age which we find kinda funny. Get better soon Evan!

Appendicitis, or any kind of abdominal issue, is so hard to pinpoint, especially if you have other stomach issues. Is it gas? stomach bug? a revenge-seeking taco? danger? By the time our minds get to danger, it's evolved into imminent danger and possible surgery. You're right about the over-dramatized ER visits in Movies/Shows, and it definitely gives you a false sense of what is and isn't urgent.

I'm from the Netherlands, we do have to pay "eigen risico" (to a maximum of 600 euro's) for certain things but otherwise your insurance covers most big things (there's some nuances, and you can get extra coverage). When I broke my leg, my friends hadn't seen it so when they called they just said my leg was broken, even though they weren't sure, just so an ambulance would come and take me to the hospital.

Having a sore throat post-surgery is fairly common I think. I am not a doctor, but I have had a bunch of surgeries and my throat is always super sore after, like yours is now - I think it's because when they put you on anaesthesia they put in a breathing tube and it can irritate a bit or something:) Feel better soon!!

My dad sounded like a robot after his thyroid removal. I was worried that they had done something since it's such a close area. He also had to be sedated for an extra day. Well removing his thyroid which was cancerous they kept going down further and further finding more cancerous tissue further down his neck and they accidentally punctured it long. They got all that fixed up but he doesn't like being in the hospital at all and really really really hates the hospital after a 7-month battle with cancer years prior. While he was coming out of anesthesia they obviously had to have him hooked up to more things and monitored and apparently he was trying to rip everything out. So he got sedated and kept under because of his bad behavior.

Katelyn and Evan- what you said about how the E.R should feel like an urgent matter really got to me. I'm not a doctor or nurse but I am a MLT. I don't know as much as doctors and nurses but I will say this- please come in. Sometimes patients are too ashamed or scared to come in the E.R. and they unfortunately pass away because they don't make to the hospital in time. Never feel bad for coming into the E.R, it's better to be safe than sorry. Too often I've seen patients pass because it was just too late. I would rather have healthy patients leave knowing they are healthy! I know people have gone to the E.R and felt like they weren't welcome or that they felt like they wasted the hospitals time- unfortunately we do not live in a perfect system and these things happen. But please, don't be afraid to advocate for you're health. Doctors don't have all the answers, that's why there are specialists! To anyone struggling- do not give up. The answers are out there I promise. I'm so glad too see Evan getting better and I hope that Katelyn can relax now knowing that he's better- having loved ones that are sick is hard for family too! ❤ thank you guys for all the awesome content!

I think as sick people it can feel like a huge burden to take on the stress others feel about you coz I feel like so many people stress about us. I heard a thing about rings, where you, the sick person, are in the middle circle, and then your very closest people are in a circle out from you, then close family, then close friends, then like work colleagues you like a lot and friends you know less etc etc and the idea is you can only complain to someone in a ring further out from you so as not to put extra pressure on the people in the middle circles from like all the pressure pointing in. It's really helped me (as an autistic person especially) figure out who I can talk to about stuff and how. And also feel less pressure about my own health :) I hope you're doing good x

My day is always brighter when the two of you drop a video! My ex had appendices and hid a lot of pain from me. On day four, I get a call from the hospital, and he's telling me that his appendix was close to rupturing and he's heading into surgery. He worked the graveyard shift and drove himself to the hospital. I was gobsmacked. Evan, have you had a CT scan on your neck? I have horrible neck pain and headaches, and my new doctor ordered a CT scan. Turns out that I have degenerative discs, arthritis, and bone spurs. I need surgery to stabilize my neck, as it will only get worse. I'm so glad that you're doing better Evan!❤🦸‍♂️

As to Evan being so cold in the one waiting room. You said he had a hoodie on, and yours over top that (although I doubt he was able to physically wear it because of size difference) one think I learned from backpacking in having too many layers closer to your body prevents your body heat from spreading and warming the space under the blanket. So even when camping in the colder months I have minimal layers on in my bag so my body heat can warm up the space in the bag and keep me warmer.

this reminds me of when i had both my kidney stones, the first one i was still in or just recently out of highschool and was on vacation. i had been dealing with sporatic random bouts of extreme pain/cramping for several months prior (3-4 months), but having had IBS my whole life thought it was just that spiking to an extreme level. well it had hit a point where i was apparently just very sickly pale, i could barely stand anymore and just wanted to lay down. A family friend offered to take me to Urgent care since my mom needed to go visit family in the hospital. Urgent care was just closing and said to go to ER, and the ER had alot of normal looking people, and i was ready to just collapse, and thats when i found out what was going on, as the stone showed up on Ultrasound (unusual unless they are reaching a certain size of 1cm or larger), it felt silly having gone in for that after the fact but getting the medication afterward is what was important. Flash forward 2-3 years and had a second one, at that point i recognized all my symptoms and already got prescriptions, but again it spiked more that the medication could help with. had to go to ER again, and was actually vomitting from pain. ended up getting stronger pain killers after the fact and an IV while i was there. the ER that time was PACKED and most everyone looked "okay" or at least calm, and i got rushed in rather quickly because i knew what was wrong, was able to explain what i was already doing, and someone at the desk could also tell i wasnt just faking it for stronger meds. ER Is so helpful, but knowing when to go is tough, especially if you think its not serious because you have a high tolerance for pain/illness.

It's nice that they took you serious in the ER. I once got ready for work, already feeling completely jittery. My boss looked at me at 6 am and immediately send me to the hospital as I was sweating and bright red in the face and I had problems with my blood pressure before. I was literally the only person in the ER and the nurse just looked at me 'Can't you just wait until your GP opens at 8?' No Ma'am, I think I might die until then. She hooked me up to some monitors and got suddenly very quick and gave me something to lower my blood pressure and heart rate. Both were way to high. She then took a blood sample and had me waiting in the cold waiting room, me only wearing a short sleeved business shirt soaked in sweat, with my blood pressure down to normal then I was freezing my butt off. I had to wait there until 8 when the lab techs would start working and all they did was check for drugs, that I hadn't taken obviously.
