If RU-vid is doing its job in gathering data for ad revenue then it may be impossible to calculate how much money it actually brings in. Certainly, Google thinks its worth it.

The only service that unironically has a chance to even steal marketshare from RU-vid is PornHub. Both have the same business model, both let anyone following guidelines upload, and both have annual conventions for the platform. But I would think only one is profitable right now, and my money is on the Hub.

Only thing with pornhub is that they don’t have relationships with major brands, and a lot of their current advertisers are sus. While I’m sure they could pull something off, they’d still have to get over a lot of hurdles in order to gain any traction against RU-vid

As interesting as RU-vid’s higher up decisions may be. I wouldn’t want it to disappear, there’s soooo much documentation on this site that would be devastating to lose, if RU-vid were to disappear, so many people would lose their jobs, even their only source of income. So personally I hope RU-vid stays a lot longer.

Copyright is a major problem too. Without high in demand content no video platform can keep up with RU-vid, and of there weren't copyright then with enough money you could use bots in order to make a copy of popular creators into your site. But with copyright that's effectively impossible.

Question, how did you learn how to edit? I make my own essays and feel like i improve with each one, but every time i watch one of yours i feel so astounded by the range of things that can be done. Do you have any recommendations? Is it just a matter of practicing more and more, or is there a resource that can help expedite the process? The things you do in the intro I don't know if i would even be able to think of, let alone edit. Thanks for producing so many enjoyable essays, they're always a treat to watch.
@1C2yt
@1C2yt 3 года назад
Wow thank you so much! This really means a lot. Personally, I'm mostly self-taught, and anything I couldn't figure out, I've found RU-vid tutorials for it. I use Final Cut Pro, but everything in this vid could have just as easily been done in Premiere. Like you said, practice is one of the most important aspects of improving your craft (and believe me I still have plenty to learn), but these would be my more specific suggestions, assuming you're just starting out: 1. Learn your stock transitions/effects well. It's really crazy what you can do with the effects built in with Premiere and Final Cut once you learn what their parameters do and how to use them together. You really don't need any fancy plug-ins to make something look nice. And there are plenty of tutorials out there that can explain things like this if you ever get stuck (I know I did). Just remember though, experimentation is key. Screw around with vignettes and keyframes and wipes and blending modes and you'll eventually stumble upon something interesting (that's essentially what I did for my intro). Once you figure out how to use these, though, you'll soon come to realize their limitations, which leads to the next piece of advice: 2. Find plug-ins that address the limitations of your software, if required for your project. In this video, for example, I knew that I wanted some glitch effects and transitions, and while I could have taken the time to build them with stock effects, it wouldn't have been time-effective to do so. If you do decide to look for plug-ins and stuff, I'd suggest being specific in what you're looking for so that you're not overwhelmed with choice. Also, there's plenty of free stuff out there, esp for Premiere, once you start looking around. Again, though, I'd only really suggest finding other plug-ins if you know exactly what you're looking for. Otherwise, you're probably fine with stock effects. 3. Try to recognize good editing in other videos you watch. RU-vid is a treasure trove of editing ideas, and even if some effects can look overwhelming, try to break them down and identify the parts that you could feasibly do and replicate them with the tools at your disposal. It's never a bad thing to take inspiration from other creators when trying to find your own style. And, even if you can't recreate something exactly, you still probably will have learned a lot in the process. 4. Try to recognize good PACING in other's work and your work. This one is probably the most important part of editing. You can have all the fanciest effects in the world, but if the pacing is off--if the rhythm of your video is off---then they'll serve no purpose. When you're editing, take your time making edits and rewatching clips. Be hyper-cognizant of how your video, your music, your voice, and your script all interact with each other. They all should work be working together to deliver your message in a clear and (ideally) clever way. 5. Value improvement over perfection. This one is less technical, but I think it's important. Obviously, make the best things you can, but don't fret about making your video "perfect," because it will never live up to that standard. You gain infinitely more knowledge from completing multiple projects in succession than you will ever get just sitting and tinkering with one forever. And, if you take into account other people's criticisms (and if you're critical enough of yourself), you'll see improvement as you go on. I'll be honest, when I even *think* about my earlier videos, I cringe hard. But I keep them up to remind myself of my progress from then to now. Sorry this got so long; I wasn't expecting it to. It's a bit of a jumbled mess, but it was a fun opportunity to reflect on my editing process. I hope this all helps!

@@1C2yt Thanks so much for the prompt and detailed response! I work with premiere, though I haven't done much searching for what resources are available as far as plugins go outside of the base program (mostly because I haven't mastered the base program itself lol). This is really good insight, and it makes a lot of sense; nothing really is a substitute for exposure to new ideas and practicing. I appreciate it, and am excited to watch whatever you have coming out in the future.

Good video. I think you hit several nails on the head. The simple fact is that RU-vid really is the best available streaming platform, in spite of its problems and controversies. But that could change. No company is too big to fail--that's a myth we need to kill. And there is a lot of competition for RU-vid, even if that competition hasn't been wildly successful. How did Apple survive and even thrive, in spite of the Microsoft juggernaut? By doing things differently and not trying to out-Microsoft Microsoft. And the solution isn't to replace the RU-vid giant with simply another streaming media giant. That wouldn't solve the problem, but simply change the names involved. If enough streaming services find their own profitable niches, then RU-vid might not be killed, but simply diminished by attrition. A lot of my favorite RU-vidrs are on Nebula and provide additional content that doesn't fit well on RU-vid. Vimeo and DailyMotion seem to be hanging on somehow, so if a couple of dozen other services like Curiosity Stream, BitChute, etc also find their profitable niches, then the power and damage caused by RU-vid and its policies will be greatly diminished. As long as there are other places to go for similar content, then RU-vid can't risk making really big, stupid mistakes, or if they do, it's not the end of the internet world.

This video is great. Great production quality, script-writing, and several good points. However, I don't think it needed to be 17 minutes. The reason RU-vid won't die boils down to this: It's a mainstream media platform. People won't leave it regardless of if another video sharing site arises, because RU-vid is all they know. This is basically the same as asking why Twitter won't die. Because it has no competitors. The competitors that it does have aren't the same, or, as objectively good. (By the way, don't take the comment as ignorant or criticizing, just wanted to potentially start a conversation around this topic. This video is great and I love your content!)

I'm months late to the party, but the ending reminded me of a proposal someone in a discord server I'm in had - What if we made a web of decentralized video sharing platforms that are spearheaded and put under the umbrella of one larger entity? Maybe using such a network it may be easier to moderate content and such, though ofc without completely reinvigorating the internet in such a way that competitive profits are no longer a thing and finding some way to make sure every single site is being monitored whilst still retaining enough independence to do their thing unfettered a system like this would be completely untenable.

Thanks! the reason why I focus on the alt-right so much is because the alt-right has caused infinitely more demonstrable harm than the left has in this century, whether you measure that by terrorist incidents, hate crimes, or the erosion of civil discourse.
