This week I'm going to show you why you need a fast prime lens for astrophotography.
If you take photos with an interchangeable camera system like the sony a7iii, and you'd like to photograph the stars, consider getting a fast prime, to get better results in astrophotography.
I have the samyang 14mm, 24mm and the batis 25mm. All of which are prime lenses (they don't zoom) and have a really wide aperture. Affiliate links
Some of the links above are affiliate links, which means at no extra cost to you I will make a small commission, if you click them and make a qualifying purchase.

Great video, thanks! I wanted to make a comment about infinity focus. The reason that manual lenses focus past infinity when set to the infinity mark is because the focal point is affected by temperature, and the lens needs to accommodate a wide range of temperatures. As the temperature changes the lens components expand or contract slightly and this changes the focal point. If you’re going to preset infinity focus, make sure you do it at about the same temperature that you’re going to shoot. Otherwise you may find the focus has shifted. Also, at smaller apertures the depth of field is narrower, which makes accurate focusing that much more critical.

That is a great point Mark...and that would answer the reasoning behind the fact that some lenses have their infinity points not quite where the infinity marker is. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Thanks for another informational video. Due to your videosI ended up purchasing the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 for my a7iii. I wanted a lens with low (like zero) distortion for architecture shots. I am hoping the 2.8 will be fast enough for shooting the stars. It's a manual lens which I was dreading, but I ended up liking the manual settings. The focus point is right on! You ROCK!

Now I am a little envious.....apparently that’s an amazing lens....I’m desperate to get my hands on the Laowa lenses....the 15mm f2 is at the top of my shopping list!! 2.8 will be great for shooting the stars. I have the samyang 14mm 2.8 and it’s plenty bright enough. Yeah, it seems a bit counter intuitive, but a manual lens forces you to slow down and think about the process....and actually speeds up the process in astrophotography once you’re used to it due to the ease of focussing at night. 👍 Thanks so much Robert and I hope you get lots of use out of it!!! I’m sure you will! 👍

@@mikesphotography I live in Dallas, TX, so I can avoid light pollution with a drive an hour north. I sometimes have buyers regret when I buy almost everything. I think a f2/0 or f/1.4 would have been a better choice. Maybe 12mm is too wide. 15mm f2/0 would have been better. Then I already have a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for my APS-c camera. Etc. Etc. Etc. I did some test shots around a museum, in low light, yesterday and the color and sharpness were amazing. So I'm happy with the purchase. Stay tuned for how it performs for astro. As always, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Appreciated!

Ah, the good old buyers regret! It’s so annoying!! Although it sounds like that is fading fast for you. I say you can never have enough kit!! My bank manager wouldn’t agree but I ignore him on the days I visit the local camera store! 👍

Great videos. I like the quick, no nonsense approach to your subject. And the fact that you use words like "faffing" make them all the more entertaining. Keep up the good work.

Haha!! I hate it when people “faff” 😆 Thanks so much Chris, the one thing that really annoys me is when I click on a subject and I have to wait ages for them to get around to the title subject, so I cut as much of the faffing out in the edit!! 👍 I really appreciate the words of encouragement, they keep me motivated and making more videos for you guys! 👍

You nailed it, I was using the kit lens for astrophotography three months ago while I was in Yellowstone, I was thinking I was as idiot for taking crap pictures,(I am a noob in photography just as FYI) now I understand what I was doing wrong, thanks for the crisp education video loved it. Thumbs up 👍 all of my thumbs, waiting to learn more from you

I’m so glad it’s helped!! So many times people say it’s not the camera but what’s behind the camera that counts....however, in astrophotography....it really is what camera and more importantly what lens you have that makes all the difference as there’s so little light about. I was filming a video last week, I hired a canon 1600d and tried shooting the stars with a kit lens and it was almost impossible to get a good image....luckily my samyangs are canon mounts so I put them on there, followed the rules and ended up with some decent images. Thanks for all the support! Lots more videos coming so keep checking back.....and if you’re interested, I’m going to be sending out a weekly email with links to my videos and any significant photo news I think is interesting....head over to my website and scroll to the bottom of my home page if that’s something you’d like, no worries if not. 👍👍👍

Really nice mike! The first prime that I bought was a rokinon 14mm f/2.8, it is such a good lens for astro photography

Otávio Carvalheira thanks Otávio! Most definitely, the rokinon 14mm is a great lens for Astro. I really want the Laowa 15mm, but they are quite pricey!! It’s definitely on my shopping list though! 😁

Everyone needs a Nifty 50 (Canon 50mm f/1.8) - a little narrow field for astro, but it has *exceptional* glass quality and blistering speed -- all packed in a ridiculously affordable ~$130 price tag. If you're on a budget don't even hesitate. Get it.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 лет назад
I definitely agree! A nifty fifty is by far the best bang for the buck, budget lens, you can buy. When I was first starting out, I made money with that lens time and time again! 👍

Was hoping you would speak about the Batis 25, I am thinking of buying it for astrophotography.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 года назад
This was more for the budget sensitive astrophotographers amongst us (And I’d only just got the batis when I shot this). The batis 25mm is a fantastic lens, one of my favourites. I wish it was a little faster but it does a great job and gives amazing results even wide open. I’m hoping to get my hands on the 24mm Sony 1.4 and then I’ll be comparing them to see which is better for astro.
@amtraker

@@mikesphotography That would be a great comparison, I am curious as to how much coma the Batis has compared to the other tested lenses. I am a new subscriber and very much appreciate and love your work.

amtraker thanks so much! Great to have you here!! 😁👍 Hopefully I’ll get the Sony lens soon...it’ll definitely be interesting to see the difference with any of the aberrations between lenses. Thanks 👍

Are fly-by-wire lenses really that much harder to focus manually than the old ones? I've been looking to get a new lens that has all the automatic controls as options for daytime but I do shoot at night quite often as well. My experience so far is only with vintage lenses on Sony and AF-S lenses on Nikon.

Hi Mike. Just bought an A7 III and am looking to purchase a lens for astrophotography. However, I would really like it to be a versatile lens as well. I would like to use it for other wide angle situations such as landscape or indoor shooting. Ideally, it would have a nice AF system since this is one of the highlights of the A7III. I've sort of narrowed my selection down to a few lenses and am curious on your thoughts- Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2.0 Sigma Art 14mm f/1.8 Sigma Art 14mm-24mm f/2.8 Sigma Art 20mm f/1.4 Price does matter a bit to me, but I do not want to waste money on an inferior lens which I will want to replace or will not serve me well, which is why I've not included Samyang's lenses. Let me know what your thoughts are.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 6 лет назад
Yanoa hi, wow, that’s an amazing list of lenses, any one of those would serve you well. The samyangs are ok but you’re right, ever since I’ve had the batis, I want a better quality super wide! The most versatile would be the 14-24mm zoom, but then it’s not quite as fast as some of the others. I really like my 25mm batis but wish it was a bit wider angle at times. So for versatility I’d say the zoom. I haven’t used it so it would be worth checking RU-vid to see how much distortion there is. I’m currently saving up for the Laowa 15mm f2 to replace my 14mm samyang. The a7iii is a great little camera isn’t it! I got mine about a month ago. 👍

What do you think about Zeiss Batis 2.8/135? Would be any good for astrophotography along with a Sony Alpha 7 III mirrorless full frame camera? 🤔
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 года назад
That would be ok, but you would have to get it on a tracker with the 400 rule, because with the 135mm, your exposure time would be limited to 3 seconds. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I was thinking about getting the 16-35 wide angle gm lens from Sony, will be as sharp as the prime lens?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 лет назад
The 16-35mm gm is a beast of a lens, it’ll be better than the samyang and very close to the Zeiss quality....you can’t go too wrong with that lens.....it’s definitely on my shopping list.
@crosdremz
@crosdremz 5 лет назад
Thanks Mike, yesterday after I posted the message, I came across "Sony 24mm F1.4 G Master" lens, apparently it came out recently and costs way less than the 16-35 mm F2.8 GM Wide angle lens, I am now in a dilemma if the F1.4 Prime Wide angle GM lens will be better than the F2.8 Wide angle GM lens for astrophotography and landscape mostly?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 5 лет назад
Now that’s a dilemma....they’re both fantastic lenses! The 1.4 gives you a tonne of light and the 24mm is a good focal length; I use my 25mm batis all the time and that’s only an f2. The 16-35mm will give you more options with focal lengths, it’s still a fast lens but not quite the same as the 1.4. Whichever one you end up going for, you’ll probably miss features of the other one.....and of course the price.....the 16-35mm is so expensive!! Anyway, that probably hasn’t helped much, the best bet might be to try and find a shop near you and try them both out.....if that’s possible. 👍
