So correct. I grew up absolutely destitute. I began working at age 12 just so that I could afford prescription eyeglasses and dental care. At age 14, I had to pay rent to my parents & help with other bills and food. At age 16, I received my emancipation and entered college (yes, I worked full time AND received an excellent education in scholarship AND graduated high school early). Next, I got a STEM degree in Georgia in the Hope Scholarship. It still wasn’t enough!!!! I had to hop from one abusive guy to another to merely survive. Once I finally got free, I had special needs twins & the government doesn’t help or care at all! Now at age 50, I’m done! I worked my heart out. I’ve never hurt anyone with intent, but was thoroughly abused by all my employers b/c they needed me to do their job & make them look good. Even once I figured that out and started my own biz… I couldn’t make it b/c of my children’s illness. Women do not get proper healthcare in the US. I warn you, menopause will destroy your health w/out proper hormone treatment.

I left the US for all the reasons that you stated. I sold all my stuff, had someone take over my lease, and left. I moved back to Thailand and it was the best decision I have ever made. America was killing me mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. I am so much happier and my life is leaps and bounds better. I will never live in the United States again.

Everything you said, in the beginning, is what people say to me when I tell them that I am leaving. I have a 2.5-year-old son and I just ordered his birth certificate. Next will be his passport. I have started minimalizing and downsizing. I am planning my finances and selling things. I am a black woman raising a young black son, and I feel unsafe everywhere in the US. I want better for my son and leave before he experiences the active shooter drills. I plan on going hopefully in less than 2 years. Hopefully, I will be gone by the next election. I am just tired of the rat race and the American dream is dead.

Sis if Dad's name is on that birth certificate you will need his permission to obtain the passport for the 2.5 year old. He has to appear with you or can sign in front of a notary unless my brother is incarcerated and I hope that isn't the case.

Made the move 2.5 years ago, we also have a 10 year old black son. It made a huge difference in his and our quality of life. Make sure you get your birth certificates, marriage certificates all apostilled .

I am an Indian, and trust me when I say I have immense pressure over me from my friends and family to leave India and move to USA or Canada. Even after telling them I am not comfortable leaving India, they call me stupid and say that you will never be successful in India as the paycheck is higher in those countries. But still I am not leaving India and ignoring all their advices, and have no regrets on my decision. Seeing this video, I can definitely say I made the right choice.

I lived in Portugal for the past 5 years...Originally from Texas...Never been happier, healthier in mind, body and spirit in my entire life...Lived in Mexico and many other countries around the world...Love culture and exploring places off the beaten path...The amount of money I have saved being a legal resident across the board...has been fantastic...Don't need a car...that in itself puts a lot of jingle in my pocket...I have everything I need in a small package from Mountains, rivers, beaches, lakes, Islands and etc...Excellent food and quality of life...It has been an blessing and I am truly grateful to call Portugal home! I lived in Italy for 10 years, and for financial reasons I moved here to the USA. I’m so glad I did at that time because this country make me grow up like I couldn’t do in Italy. Now that I’m financially responsible I’m working really hard to became financially free and go back to Italy, because we really don’t feel safe here to grow our kids! And that is really Sad

Welcome to how black people have always felt living here. All we want is our reparations and land we are owed by the u.s government. Half if not all of us will leave this country in a heart beat if they give us what is owed to us. I plan on leaving. Like that world war 2 vet that was crying on tv this country aint what it was and never will be. I dont intend on sticking around to see it. Japan looks like my kind of place. Good luck man wish you all the best. I never been to italy maybe one day. I know my father lived in Germany and said he never wanted to come back to United States in his life after living there but he came back for us since he had my sister. So maybe i might visit Germany and see why he loved it so much. But just that alone learning my father would leave United States gave me a real perspective on things america really isnt the best and hasnt been for a very long time. My friend just moved to Columbia and loves it so much. She said her rent is $550 for a gorgeous apartment with a really nice view. She walks everywhere and lost about 15lbs in 2 months she has been there. And she has been the happiest she has ever been. My husband is from Ghana. We are looking at me getting dual citizenship there.

I left the US in my twenties and I've lived in Japan since 2007. It's great for health care, safety, and cleanliness. But you have to deal with a lot socially as a foreigner in Japan. It's give and take really. There's no perfect place to live. There will always be difficulties.

Yes totally agree. I am an immigrant in the US. Nothing is perfect, all countries have their issues and you need to navigate, adjust and adapt to live happily and comfortably in anywhere. In fact, people don't understand USA is actually fair and virtually no racism, compared to many other countries. I am an asian, they are nice and all that on the surface, but deep inside, they don't treat foreigners as same, it's just the facts. Biggest problems I see in the USA is, it's getting soooo expensive just to survive, food, housing, healthcare, schools, all crazy. Also, stupid politicians/people try to make non existing problems out of thin air for power and money. It's pathetic. It was such a beautiful country with freedom, but now they don't even allow free speech. What a shame.

This is such a timely and relevant post. The safety, healthcare, and cost of living issues here in the US are just too much. Thanks to this channel, I went from living paycheck to paycheck to investing 30% of my salary, picking up some side hustles and making a plan with my husband to retire early and move abroad. Not to minimize your experience by why compare one of the more dangerous US cities to an entire country? South Korea definitely has its more slum(ish) areas (admittedly not as bad as the US but still sketch IMO). I'd say before you leave the US altogether you can find some of the much safer Illinois neighborhoods (or even a safer state). With that said, there's nothing like living abroad! (as long as it's for the right reasons) I've only done so in the military but it was awesome no less.

I'm making plans to move from 🇺🇸 RIGHT NOW! I'm originally from 🇯🇲 and when my parents moved here it was for a so called "better life". And while I'm grateful for all that the U.S.A has done for me and my family, I can not with all honesty say that this country offers a better life. I fact, my father who is now 86 years old moved back to Jamaica 25 years ago and he regrets not moving home sooner. The United States has a lot to offer, just not anything that I'm interested in anymore.

I’m Jamaican as well. I’ve been here for 20 years, but I’m young with young children so I’m “stuck” here for sometime. You are right. The US has a lot to offer, but just nothing I want anymore. The longer I’m here the more I see that the system is designed to keep us all working/grinding, not for ourselves but for the top 2-5%. Everything we think we have accomplished is a myth. The house, car, possessions are all on borrowed money, and we have to work to keep it all, so the cycle continues. It’s really modern day slavery.

I lived in Senegal for a year altogether during the pandemic. It’s hard coming back to America because of the boredom of life in the US. Life is just much more social in other parts of the world. You know all your neighbors, you visit with each other. People take public transportation and interact with each other daily. All the different cultures mixing together. You just feel alive. I won’t retire in the US. I’ll most likely leave well before retirement. Gotta enjoy the time I have here while I can.

It’s just mentally exhausting being here, I’m from Texas and I can’t get what those kids went through out of my mind, plus the lack of response from “law enforcement “ hurts my soul, I’ve talked to my husband about leaving, I just need to get my daughter on board, America has serious problems, the problem is ONLY have of the population truly want to solve them, money, power & greed trumps all here, most Americans don’t realize that you can live a better life somewhere else.

I hear what you are saying. My parents are originally from India. They came here 45 years ago to the US to make a better life for me and my younger brother. Now, I've lost them both to cancer. I do have some extended family here in the US. But I have a lot more extended family in India and I am definitely feeling the emptiness and the void here. I definitely feel like I want to pack up and go back to India and settle down there because family and connections are important. I still remember all my india trips with fond memories when I went there for vacations. And I have no problem going back there and settling down. Sure you can make your money( lots of it) in the US if you are successful in your field and good in whatever you do( doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant etc...) and you have a little bit of luck on your side, but here's an important lesson that I learnt after loosing both parents: In the end, in your final moments, it really doesn't matter. You don't take anything with u. Not your house, not your car, not your money, not your jewelry... Nothing..

Definitely considering it. I’m in a great financial situation, military retired in my 40’s. I do have it good, large house, 5 acres, toys, garage etc etc. I realize it’s only stuff. Letting go of all it and living a abroad….single, never married, no kids and the dating blows here. I’m so thinking, “Jim, sell it all and go live abroad…and just maybe you’ll find a nice girl along the way….get out of Podunk Ohio.” Watching all the content out there. Thailand, Philippines, Spain….sounds awesome.

I've been traveling as a single woman for 40+yrs. I left the USA for good (aside from a vist) 4yrs ago. Not all but most of those who have said "why would you leave the greatest country of all" have never been out of the country themselves for more than a quick holiday. My next move here in Europe is Portugal. Weather, healthcare, safety and overall friendliness says it all.

Great topic, I sold everything and left the U.S. last year. I am so glad that I finally made that move. After 6 months in Costa Rica I went to Medellin Colombia where I currently am right now and live very comfortably for less then $1,300. My beautiful Colombian girlfriend which I met just after my first month here is a restaurant owner and wants to sell and follow her sisters lead and move to Spain. We will be flying there in the fall to explore our options. Thanks for another informative video and I couldn't agree with you more. You didn't say it but I will other then you being their to be sucked out of every dollar you have by our Oligarchy corporations in my opinion America is turning in to a dystopian Police state authoritarian nightmare at best. And I want nothing to do with that self-inflicted painful future anymore. I am so much happier and healthier now that I am living abroad and could never go back. The grass is much greener over here and I expect that to continue.

It's very true I am living with my wife and three kids in Lisbon Portugal since January 2020 in a 3 bedroom rental flat ,groceries electricity gas and water including the flat rent costs maximum 1050 euros per month with free health care for all family and free education in government schools .transportation is very reasonable as well and you can find buses trams trains in almost every street of city passing by near your 3 to 5 minutes walking distance area . The weather is amazing here we have almost 315 days with sunlight in the year .Portuguese people are super friendly and lovely. Crime ratio is very very low .

Keep in mind, this is coming from a perspective of making American levels of income. Living in Lisbon on a Portuguese income isn‘t nearly as much fun. I‘m not claiming that Amon doesn’t realize this. Rather, having lived in numerous countries myself, I know that people who have never lived abroad and have only experienced other countries from the visitor perspective, often don‘t understand how hard it can be to by on local salaries.

I've heard that Lisboans are protesting the American influx into their city. Americans over paying for rent and driving up prices so that natives cannot afford to live in their own city anymore! Kinda like what we did with the Native Americans - running over others in greed. It's in the American DNA and it's so obvious in what's happening today here in the US.

Yes local salaries and local policies, mandates and restrictions. Portugal is one of the strictest European countries coming out of lockdown. It imposed some horribly draconian measures such as curfews stopping people from leaving their homes.

I agree. We plan to be in the US one more year and then go. My children are young, 3 and 6. But the school Shootings, health care costs, university costs, housing costs ( in California especially) all things I don’t want them to struggle with. We put our daughter in an international school so she would gain a second language and be more of a global citizen while we’re deciding where and how to move. She knows we’re on our way out and is excited. Also almost fluent in a second language.

I just moved to Paris 6 months ago and because my job requires me to be in the states 7 days of the month, I feel the difference dramatically to the point now where I'm leaving my job in the US to fully commit and immerse myself into France. Initially I thought it would be easy because I'll still have one foot in and one foot out. I’m on my 2 year plan (Oct 2024) to move out of this toxic country. Depending on what happened especially in Texas this time frame will be shorter. Inflation has made it difficult for me to save but I am planning and plotting ways to save up for this one way flight to Costa Rica or Portugal. Congratulations. Word of advice, maintain reminders in your daily life. It is so easy to get temporarily distracted with day to day life, and all of a sudden, ten years has gone by and windows of opportunity have closed. I was on track for New Zealand residency, had the paperwork filled out while I was in Christchurch. "I just need to nip back to the US to take care of some things." That was 2009. I never made it back to NZ. Retain your passion and focus for this rewarding but unconventional life. :-D

Telling it like it is. Americans don't realize how much TIME and STRESS is involved in living here, because of healthcare costs and absolutely zero safety nets because to be American is to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps," supposedly - meanwhile people are staying in toxic jobs because it's the ONLY way to may be get health insurance. We have our eyes on Spain, Portugal or Costa Rica. But it's funny, every time we mention this grand idea to family and friends, like clockwork, "Aren't you AFRAID? Do you think you'll be SAFE??" I'm like, "No, I'm more AFRAID of getting older and having health problems in America where I could go bankrupt over one thing. I'm more AFRAID of imagining my life later, struggling to get by in a society that doesn't take care of its own. This is exactly it. I met my husband while we were both living in South Korea. I left the US after college and so did he. We've lived in Thailand and Japan since then and we've done a lot of traveling. A few years ago we moved back to the US to try it out. We don't like it here and we want to leave. Your videos make us "homesick" for travel. We have some business we need to take care of in the US, but once it's done we are packing our bags and heading out. great video. I too left USA. In 1997, I went on vacation for 10 days to Ireland, loved it and stayed 18 yrs!!. Best thing I did. Everyone thought I was crazy but I said Id give it 1 year and if I didnt like it I would return to USA. It was such a great quality of life that I stayed! I always say Americans live to work and Europeans work to live! so different. Ive learnt that people leave their country for mainly 4 things L.A.M.B. = love, adventure, money or better way of life. I got all 4 by living in Ireland plus a baby! All the things you discuss in all you videos I can totally relate to! 1 quick question.. Did you work in all those countries?... Spain, Japan etc. If so how did you manage the work visas & languages?

Great video! I lived overseas for 15 out of the 21 years I was in the Air Force. And I loved every minute of it! Quality of Life is so much better overseas! My wife and I really loved living in Western Germany for 4 years and was able to travel everywhere. And it was safe! No drama. I can go on and on. Great public transportation system. Also, Southeast Asia was a good experience too! Lived in Korea, visited Thailand, Japan and Philippines numerous times. And we are buying property in the Philippines in the near future, we can’t wait! But we are not planning on staying in the US for the rest of our lives! My military and va pensions and investments is more than enough to live on overseas! US is boring! You mentioned Spain, we went to Mallorca, Ibiza, Madrid and Barcelona! It was awesome! They have Americans brainwashed here in the US thinking that it’s no life outside America! Great opportunities here in US but it’s more out there in the world! Your video is spot on! Kids in other countries can walk to school on their own without worrying about being kidnapped, etc. I also seen kids young as 4 walking to school by themselves in other countries. Very accurate!

America was like that. I grew up with neighbor kids, we were outside all day, no air conditioning. We walked & rode out bike everywhere & never worried about being trafficked, shot, beat-up... The country has been ruined. Criminals rule, the mentally ill have nowhere to go, homeless & drugs all over our streets. Also the Infrastructure is not as good as in the 90.s In Germany we have also higher costs and the „Inflation „ is also realy hard . I’m still watching but had to comment as this really spoke to my heart. I love the US but it really was like living life on hard mode. I moved to the Netherlands two years ago and my quality of life has increased immensely! I agree with every single one of your points because now I have a reason to go out and enjoy life every day instead of feeling unsafe (or yes, bored). I do miss the over the top selection for food… but that’s really about it lol-so definitely not a reason to put up with more than I was able to. Sure taxes here are higher and that sucks but I also actually have a work-life balance (not just what was spouted to me previously by corporate America jobseekers). We have to pick our battles and I agree that being abroad has opened my eyes; we have to chose what we want. Thanks for making this video, I’m sure your wife will be proud when she sees it!

Quality of life has improved because there are so many more activities to do (I don’t drink so there was not much outside of going to bars), but here there’s something to be done everyday. I do live in one of the bigger cities though so I know that’s a factor but overall, I would say visit for a few days first and see if you like it.

Just the title of this video and the timing is confirmation for me. I’m in Italy now and was doing a “test run” to see if I love it enough here to get a long-term visa. The LIFESTYLE of Europe just sings to me. The walkability, the quality of food and how my body responds to it, the affordability. I have worked so hard to get out of debt for two and a half years and to start my own business from 2017. I’m finally at a comfortably financial place to where I haven’t needed to work a 9-5 job in a year, and then everything in America sky rockets. It feels so unfair, like I had worked so hard, and then they raised the bar on a good standard of living to astronomical heights. But you know what? It’s literally CHEAPER for me in my position right now to book Airbnb’s across Europe than it is to sustain a lifestyle in America. I’ve lived abroad before (Japan, South Korea and Prague, now Italy) and all this tells me it’s time to make it official. America isn’t sustainable anymore for the lifestyle that I want, so it’s time to make a permanent move. I’m ready and I thank you for this further confirmation.

Downside, having been in Spain a couple weeks ago: waking up at 3am to watch the NBA playoffs! But seriously, I plan to leave in a couple years and be a full-time nomad; the thing that I would add is not to make a kneejerk reaction to current events. Watching U.S.-based news programing, it's easy to forget that problems like rapid inflation and rising popularity of authoritarianism exist beyond our borders, so while everything in this video is 100% accurate, people should be sure to have realistic expectations, lest they mistakenly view moving abroad as a "quick fix" to the things that they find frustrating.

Uhhhhmmmmm while authoritarianism exist beyond the borders as a full time nomad already I can tell you that it's not as bad as many think which kinda makes people raise an eyebrow at them when it comes to telling people where it's bad and where it's not bad or really no different then the U.S. in some parts where you see people being people but the local government NOT AS BAD AS the U.S. in some of the counties there. So that logic should apply to the world over. I've seen it with my own 2 eyes. It's pretty jarring because it let's you know. America was and has been living in a bubble for far too long. It might be good that it loses some of it's citizens to other countries. Maybe America will begin to become better for it. Who knows!

Kang, no one is suggesting that America doesn't have problems, nor that it's not a good thing to get a perspective outside of the U.S. bubble. Authoritarianism has historically occurred and continues to occur in cycles across the world, and there's no doubt that we're in the midst of another one. As trade and innovation make the world an increasingly smaller place, economic struggles aren't contained within national borders, and as such, responses--and overreactions--to those pain points occur simultaneously in different parts of the world. As democracy faces challenges in the States, one doesn't have to look hard to see similar trends in other nations: the rise of the Fidesz in Hungary, the PiS in Poland, the RN/FN in France, Tunisia's suspension of parliament, Myanmar's military coup, Turkey's concentration of executive power, etc. As for seeing things with one's own eyes...me too. Just a few years ago I was on a train in South Africa, where I was set aback to hear locals speak fondly of so-called "law and order" politics in the U.S.; in hindsight, I shouldn't have been surprised; historically, politically-fatigued people have often relinquished their freedoms to figures who make broad promises that, under their direction, all of the nations' problems will go away. In short, authoritarianism isn't a national problem...it's a human one.

This is very true! I want to pick up on something specific with regard to the news. It's very easy to get caught up in the negativity. The news and social media environment is VERY polarized in the US - from social media only serving up content and views that align with one's own (this is everywhere, actually) to "news" channels that have no right to call themselves "news"...more like politically-slanted talk shows. I lived in the UK for several years before moving back to the US. It had its own issues. The national health service almost killed me one time due to ineptitude and I knew several people who could not get seen for serious medical issues. The grass is most certainly not always greener.

I am from Colombia, moved to the US, studied and worked hard and became a physician. I have a family here, but for some reason I don’t think the US is the place I dream of when I moved here on the first place. I feel overworked and physically and mentally tired and stressed. I think life is too monotonous and cost of living, rising violence, gun culture, and many other aspects of life here are pushing me to consider moving somewhere else. Two years ago I spent time in China. Mind blown. It was nothing like all the negative garbage I had heard and I found it wonderful. Planned to move there after retiring and making it a base from which to travel. As you said, a big motivation was the need for adventure and even despite all the things I messed up (figuring at the subway comes to mind) it was def an adventure. Of course, then Covid came and changed a lot of options. Plus the increasing negativity between USA/west and China. I may never get to go there (so much for trying to study mandarin). But I STILL do not want to stay in America. I live in Texas, which should tell you everything. The more I see our laws protecting weapons more than people, or the gov and SCOTUS removing rights we enjoyed for years (I fear for my gay friends and young women), the increasing move towards an authoritarian theocracy, AND the skyrocketing cost of health care - its not what I want. FYI. I just learned that for me, Ill have to pay about $600/mo for MEDICARE premiums. I only pay $40/month for insurance as an employee. So when I do retire, that will be a crazy HUGE chunk of my expected social security check. Cripes!!! Yes. I agree the shine is gone. But life on a SS budget is hard to imagine in a place with no friends or safety net. I've debated whether to sell my home. That would get me enough to live on well for at least 6 years. BUT... if I do that, if and when I do come back to USA I will have no cost controlled home. So - yikes. How would I afford to live in America then? I do wish there were local programs where I could get more details. Talk to more people. I am single and in my 60s, so I have a different set of questions than you do as a young family man.

China is really good for retirees. Very advanced public transit, Local buses are free for retirees, lower cost of living and very safe, and quite clean. I’m sure that you have also seen the large number of retirees exercising in groups at public squares and in parks every morning and every evening. Lots of good food, diverse cultures and sceneries from north to south and from West to east coast of the country. Yes, the Western report about China is complete garbage. In fact, it’s the people in the West who are brainwashed about China. Glad that you have been there to see it with your own eyes to make a fair conclusion.

From 2020 statistics the average salary in the US was $56,000/yr The average in Portugal was $19,000/yr. So I'd make sure and bring your salary with you when you move.

Tanisha, that’s great to hear. I’m also 1st gen US in NY. Started the process by getting Apostille BC but stalled on the final application form. Just need to gather my parents documents. Where are you in the process? Our plan is to buy a vacation home in Portugal and start our retirement by sharing time between US and PT. We’ll see where that leads. Good luck!

I would just add that the Healthcare in the US is just bad all around. Maybe the technology is more advanced but the service is abysmal and of course everyone know how bad the cost is. Waiting hours upon hours in an emergency room before someone even sees you is common here. Hell you get billed faster than you get actual help. I've been in hospitals in European countries and received much better service than in any US hospital.

When I was in grad school I studied and interned abroad and I did not want to return to the US. Now I'm newly married and my husband and I are working towards FIRE so we can leave the US and raise our children (when we have them) some place else. I've always had concerns about raising children in the US, particularly if I have a son but as more time passes the more determined I am to leave the US.

If I sold my house I could pocket like $200k and get a part time job there and get to experience what living in Japan would be like. Would help me improve my Japanese too.

Katsuya89 I’m in my forties with a child. I’ve lived in Japan for one year in middle school but not by my own accord. I never thought I’d say this but I’m really considering moving there in the future. I know all the stats but, im so tired of the mass shootings and having to explain why it happens to my kid. It’s sickening that it even has to be explained and my kid being scared to go to school of all places. Just sad. Also, bad service here will never ever change. I just got a TB test that takes 2 minutes but waited 2 and 1/2 hrs at an urgent care center, it’s constant nonsense that we put up with.

I’m a native Japanese who lived in the US and EU, and have graduate degrees from an American school, and currently live in Tokyo. If you look for safety, reasonable healthcare, and good foods, Japan is where you should chose to live. You may easily find a second hand house outside of Tokyo with 200K USD, and the cost of living is much lower. You get higher quality for everything with lower price. You get along with locals quickly especially with your family backgrounds.

Don't give up, lay out your debt numbers on a post it on the fridge and every pay day put all you can to it. It is empowering when the numbers lower and there's an end to it. It helps you to keep from giving up.

Looks like my checklist of red flags matches yours! I have lived in several other countries (over a year in Spain, for one!) and after planning a move abroad for a long time, I'm finally in the position to emigrate, and my plan is already underway. I will be relocating to Europe in one year and my daughter and grandkids will move, too, in a couple of years. I am retired and already have relocation consultants (including an immigration attorney, who are in-country) started on my visa application. Will be traveling there this summer to check things out and look at real estate. Very excited and thank you for the points you make in this video, all of which validate my own reasons for leaving.

Very good video. I long wanted to make the jump and only managed to have my wife agree to retiring overseas. Only recently when she found your chanel did she decided to not wait until retirement and just live there already. The 5 reasons are spot on and ultimately, as you stated the worse case escenario you return to US with renew love for it. Brilliant!

Great info! I don't feel unsafe necessarily, but I often feel unwanted. That is the most concern at the moment, and it seems to be getting more concerning and will perhaps become unsafe at some point. As retired military, we have experienced living in other countries. Watching your journey is certainly propelling us forward.
