Good video but the Recycle and Fabrication system really fits the game's narrative and is better than the usual way of picking up trash and it magically turning into coins. That whole station's basic purpose is for research and development and using a system like this makes the most sense, especially with it's crew staying aboard for long periods of time.

Agreed. One of the rare criticisms I have for this game. I also disliked how you can't repair turrets when they're at half HP, you have to wait for them to break completely. Those are two minor complaints in a whole sea of excellent mechanics though.

A review should be a review of the WHOLE product. Looked at under a microscope. I am still waiting to buy this game because I am waiting on a patch to enable the FOV slider, fix the crash that corrupts saves, see if more people have the same frame pacing issues/ fps drops in certain areas that are mentioned by some. If the RU-vidr needs to put out a video that day, he can do a "initial impressions" video. Talk about what he thinks about what he has played so far. Talk about performance, the feel, the graphics, what he thinks of the story so far, what kind of game is it. Out of all the channels I am subbed to, I think I have ONE, fucking one, that actually said, "We are taking a little more time with our review." Releasing any sort of review in less than 24 hours.... Just.... Don't.

The moment it all clicked for me was when I needed to get into a room. It was locked and I didn't have the key, my skills were too low to hack the door, and the window was barred so I couldn't climb through the glass. Then I noticed the door override button inside the room, so I shot it through the window with the nerf gun and it worked!

My friend. Even though you’ve made this about a year ago, I do want to say that you’ve definitely said what needs to be said. I’ve had your experience with this as well: barely having jack to work with throughout my first play through and scraping by on encounters before becoming much more efficient with my second play through, being able to kill enemies with a bit more ease, and actually experimenting more with the mechanics given to me. The turrets were something I had come to use as more than just area denial, but as a means of luring typhon and other enemies into a trap. The environment began to resemble much more of a field of endless possibility, such as upgrading to Leverage 3 to move a large object out of a doorway or use an explosive canister to actually blow the thing out of the way. Going with guns, using larger objects to throw at typhon to kill them, or guiding them into pipes to unleash flames upon them. I’ve played through this game at least 4 times, and I’ve enjoyed it every time. I’m sorry if I sound kind of idiotic saying all of this, especially considering how I just wanted to thank you for doing this game justice, but... yeah. Thank you.

Did you have any issues with the late game quest called "The Repo Man" which requires you to find and kill a specific operator? For me the game just didn't mark where it was so I spent an hour looking for the damn thing and based on what I see online, many people seem to think it's bugged in general. Huge muchos spoileros in this comment, dont open if you havent played the game. And same in german, DAS GROSSE SPOILER ACHTUNG, JAWOHL.
I think the story is good and seems that most people don't seem to understand it. It is NOT a dream. You are "Project Cobalt" (There is voice log about this at the beginning of game in psychotronics, it basically is what the game is, go check it out) research subject, a captured(?) typhon who is given mirror neurons to see if they could empathise like human. The simulation happens after Earth is already or nearly destroyed, maybe as a last measure to try save humankind. The typhon is put thru simulation which consists of now deceased(??) Morgan's memories of what happened at the Station. At the end, depending how you play, Alex and the operators talk if the experiment was a success or not, could IT (Typhon with mirror neutrons) empathise with human and should it be spared or killed. If spared, the last experiment is that Alex gives his hand -> If you take it the experiment is a success -> Alex made typhon empathise with human, so maybe he saved human race from extinction. Secondly, in the epilogy there is a frame where Alex disappears and only the operators are present, hinting that Alex isn't really there and maybe he is dead and just projected there somehow. I don't think that is the case, but rather what Alex hints earlier that "they dont see us" or something in lines of "they dont kill us because they are cruel, but thats what they are" and Alex disappearing from vision is the "Old" typhon trying to wrestle the control (NOT seeing Alex), same as the dark whispers "they are lying to you" is the old "you" before mirror neutrons. "Can you really SEE us" nuff said. Sorry that the explanation is bit messy.. if you have completed the game tho, you should be able to see my point, even if you do not agree. I know this also has some faults, but that's something I have gathered.
*Michael Scott "Thank You!" GIF* Thank you for sharing this! Why is no one talking about this when they mention the ending?? The story is easily one of my favorite parts of this game, the whole way through I was hoping for a proper mindfuck of an ending, and this was perfect: you are actually a captured typhon who has been living out a simulation of memories(?) from Morgan. I agree, I assume the real Morgan actually died at some point. I would have loved DLC that delved into the myriad of questions I had after discovering this. Is Morgan dead? When/how did he die? How long has the simulation been going on? How is it administered by Alex? (How exactly does the Morgan-typhon experience the simulation? Is it actually a dream?) Is there anyone truly alive in the real world? The ending to this game was EXACTLY what I was hoping for. A couple of interesting things I found: I discovered the whole thing was a simulation near the end on the bridge. I found the "window" that looked out on the Apex typhon was nothing more than another looking glass. Though I guess I started guessing it was all a simulation when I tried escaping on Alex's Escape Pod. One more thing: Did you happen to notice how Morgan increasingly (maybe beginning after installing Typhon powers) actually sounded like a Mimic when he walked? That was actually one of the first things that tipped me off to the ending.

This is honestly some of the best advice I've been given in relation to games in a long time. The first playthrough I did was on Hard difficulty (second hardest the game offers) and it kicked my ass. I was constantly struggling to stay alive against the Typhon, whether it was a scarcity of ammo, health, or psi; I was constantly lacking the resources to fight back. I've now started a second playthrough on Nightmare difficulty (highest difficulty the game offers) and I'm actually finding it easier now that I know what I'm doing. I've just reached Psychotronics for the first time (again) and I have a surplus of pretty much everything; meds, ammo, crafting supplies, suit repair kits, etc. Going back to play the game immediately after you've finished it, and playing the early sections armed with the knowledge you had at the end of your first playthrough can make the game infinitely more enjoyable. I won't spoil the story, but the theme of the game very much supports a Groundhog Day mentality anyway, so honestly, if you're not playing this game through more than once, I think you're playing it wrong.

I am so fucking happy you made this video. I love watching your reviews but I was thoroughly disappointed with your Prey review. I am no longer ashamed to admit that this has become my favorite game of all time. Most of the criticism it gets isn't even really about the game but just a blind loyalty hate for the original Prey which this does not set out to replace! I really like to take my time and see as much as possible, which is what makes me laugh when people try to say it's monotonous or boring, I even saw reviews giving it a 0/10 saying it is "THE WORST GAME THEYVE EVER PLAYED." Call me slow, call me deliberate or OCD but I just logged off my PS4 for the night and clocked in my 37th hour on my first playthrough on normal difficulty and I still have 17 side missions sitting in my quest log and entire portions of the station I haven't even seen yet. This game is challenging, enticing, and downright immersive as can be. There are so many mechanics in this game that just clicked so well with me. My favorite game WAS the original Bioshock, and I almost felt guilty after telling my brother the day I got Prey only 10 hours in that this had become my new favorite game. I read what I think is probably the best "review" of this game that basically said that Prey is a game where no matter what, no two people will have the same experience or even the same sequence of events that create the 'main' story, but in an organic non-sequence breaking way that makes you realize just how truly unique this game really is. I don't know if it's just me either but I also feel like every hour I've played, there is some new mechanic added that keeps things fresh and tense that is just so amazing to play. The first time I exited the airlock and was gliding around in 0 G I thought something was wrong with the game because my character wasn't moving... at least I thought. Little did I realize how unbelievably MASSIVE the station is, and giving you free reign to literally scour the entire ship inside AND out just made my jaw drop. This is the game I never thought would exist, the one that reminded me why I fell in love with gaming. Thanks again for this video, I no longer feel like I'm crazy for being amazed by this game.

Some people play for the story, some people play for the gameplay. I fall under the category of gameplay. Don't like games that are story driven so this was a welcome addition to the all the gun crazed games that try to shove the story down your throat even if it's not that good. Plus it's an opinion, every one has his or her's. This game is not going to be for everyone, but if you like a system shock kind of gameplay then go for it.

Stealth is handy for sneak attacks and also tagging targets and then planning out your attacks. Tagging enemies, throwing a typhoon lure to group them together, and then catching them all with supethermal is awesome. It seems like my typical gameplay loop is sneak, psychshock, gloo gun, and then shotgun until the phantom is dead in 1 on 1 encounters. The great thing is I could play through the game again with different skills/powers with a completely different approach, and so could anyone else. I have a hard time balancing the skills, because I enjoy the powers for combat, but I also enjoy leverage, repair, and hacking for exploration because I just have to unlock every single room/safe. I spend so much time in the neuromods tab just deciding which skills to get.

I agree with your rant right there, sometimes some games have to be replayed more than once for the full experience. As one of my favourite games of all time Deus Ex (One) is one I didn't experience fully until I replayed it for the 2nd time and I love it to bits because of the freedom you can do in the game world and that made me played the game at least more than 10 times.

I actually kind of like the recycling and fabrication system, it kind of makes sense for a world building stand point, since this is a station filled with scientists and business men and women for various projects. It wouldn't make sense for it to run on currency, it's like if a mess hall at an army boot camp forced you to pay money to eat, it doesn't seem very practical given the moment. Plus, I suppose they also wanted the fab system to force the player to ration items, like would you find the psi hypos more important or the materials recycled from them to help make med kits or ammo.

I think my experience with the game speaks exactly what you're saying: I used the wrench all the time. Killed mimics in one-four hits, I had over 90 medikits that I just found all over the station (I used a lot of food with that metabolism perk which made healing easy), and I never really ran low on ammo past a certain point. This said, I also crafted around 100+ neuromods because I recycled every little scrap I could and then some. I never used powers outside of one level of transforming and relied mostly on guns and that combat sense which slowed down time. I made extreme use of the free suit/health/psi bots, so maybe that's why most psi hypos were just recycled. Seeing the footage you had, you were far more liberal with the powers which makes a run completely different. GLOO+shotgun once you have the right perks? Simple and effective, but if I put those points into stronger powers, I'd have just an easy time. Just with different form of ammo.

Jesus, it's like people can't understand an opinion on a game can be complex with positives and negatives, and sometimes the game just gets better once its mechanics and gameplay style mature in your mind. The first time I play Morrowind I thought it was crap, it is now one of my favorites. The first playthrough I tried playing the game that was counter inductive to the way the game was best played as, and mistakes that haunted me from the beginning to the end of the first playthrough were avoided in my subsequent games.

I REALLY enjoyed this game. It was different, refreshing, terrifying!! I played the hell out of it, and there's still parts of the station I never saw! I got such a great Bioshock vibe from the game, but with a nice fresh twist on the formula. The retrofuturistic style was unique, too.

it's why you combine the effect of GLOO with your gunfire, use that with a fully Upgraded Shotgun and you can kill most Typhon (except maybe Telepath's and Nightmare's) in one or two hits, never used the Q Beam myself but hey this game encourages different tactics so each his own.

Back in the day SystemShock 2 was may favorite game, though I got stuck I didn't finished it. Right off the bet I recognized Prey as "spiritual successor". The things that makes it "a SystemShock game" are - 1) only one or two enemies at a time, feeling like mini bosses whey you first encounter them and never complete push-overs. 2) Exploration, non linear 3) Multiple approaches 4) hard as hall in the very beginning, for the first time 5) Respawning enemies - you are never ever safe. It is funny how BioShock was considered "inspired" by SS, yet it had non of these or was extremely, extremely limited.

Very nice re-review. I understand most of your points and they end up being personal preference. The shop system is one of the things that I think it adds the most to the immersion. The mimic mod is VERY useful for traversing obstacles like squeezing trough a door while in a shape of a whine bottle (never actually used it for stealth). And I think the story is excellent, don't really understand why people hate this kind of plot twist but oh well. I really didn't see it coming so at least for me the story blew my mind.

I personally like that the enemies are hard to kill as in my opinion an enemy is more scary and hence more interesting when they take more than 2-3 shots to kill. Having hard enemies is especially important for a survival horror game as I think you're supposed to feel like you're facing overwhelming odds unlike playing a game where your character is an unrealistic badass that can kill an army by itself. I loved this game, my only complaint is the lack of enemy and arsenal variety.

I have to admit, i didn't see this comming (neither i understand). I'm not telling this as a criticism, but by the last review you did of this game, i would never guess that you would give it a replay.. specially that soon. It's funny when you said how the game pushes you to use alien abilities because I deliberately avoided ALL psi-onic stuff and I thought the opposite. I wondered how I would get by without all the hacking, repairing and weapon-boosts to even the odds, and I found I always had a surplus of supplies and tools to use. I guess that goes to show how much the game truly is tailored to how you want to play.

10:01 While I understand that it might not be the fastest way, I still think its pretty neat that they managed to make it feel like a part of the game world; like something that people on Talos I would use. I mean, even "skill points" are actual objects in the game. The game could've used a "Fabricate 'n' number of one item immediately" option, sure, but other than that I really didn't have a problem with recycling and fabricating.

I think the crafting system works better split into 4 elements as it prevents you from just making the most essential items all the time. For my 1st playthrough I was always low on Organic matter and so like you had very few MedKits which influenced my play-style in a way it wouldn't if I could just buy dozens of them.

The worst part about this game is the hacking minigame, it's mind numbingly dull. It felt like a quick program someone whipped up to test analog stick control because it's not challenging, interesting or anything. All you do is move a circle to another circle and hit a QTE while dodging stationary blocks, some freeze your cursor when you bump them for a moment. For each level of skill required it goes up a time you have to do this. The problem is it takes a while to do some of them, the later ones requiring you to run the circle across the map FOUR, TIMES. And if you take the hacking route it's got a lot of usefulness meaning you're sat around doing this tedious minigame. I'd rather have had the pipe minigame from bioshock, at least it'd have been some kind of thing for my brain to do.

Agreed, the hacking minigame is terrible. It would have been slightly better if the red blocks actually made you fail the hacking attempt, that would at least add some tension to it. I would have preferred something along the lines of a simplified Deus Ex style hacking minigame.

I did enjoy this game upon playing it and I understand your thoughts with "replaying is the best part of the experience" but don't you think a game should be able to hold itself up on its own merit the first time through? I mean why should I have to go through the entire game once or even multiple times to get the best experience? Idk I feel like it's sortve a cheap way of judging a game.

Many people do enjoy it the first time through. I guess that the difficulty dropped enough the second time through that he was able to enjoy the game. The game is really men't to be a survival horror, making you scavenge and prepare to get through the game, this may make you struggle at first.
@robertjordan6392
@robertjordan6392 7 лет назад
RaggedyAnne Frank it's not that it wasn't fun the first time around I think it's because most people aren't used to games that are practically an open sandbox so you don't know what you are capable of. You see a locked door you think you need to find a key when in prey you can use your glue cannon to jump on overhead pipes and from there climb over the wall through the broken ceiling . That way of thinking turns the game into a creative world where your excited to find the next way to complete a task that at first glance was impossible but was actually simple if you used some creativity .

I am developing a game and i was asking myself yesterday if focusing the gameplay in "layers" that you can see only with multiple playthroughs is something that is compatible with modern gaming audience. This feature is so common in rogue-lite games, play and play and play it again to see new things and new challenges, with a forceful death mechanic and there are so few cases of "classic style" genres were you find that. Games like System Shock 2 or Dark Souls hit that spot of a title that can give you options to explore, more than just spongy enemies in harder difficulties :)

@grittynerd
@grittynerd 2 года назад
@@christianjohnson2275 Struggling, but i'm still working on it. Had issues with finding the technology to do things alone, then had problems with the scale of art and scope. Last year i decided to focus on something smaller, still having the simialr ideas but in a more manageable task. Then i could return to the previous work. There are multiple approaches to content that can be experienced multiple times. In my current game, it's half/half between skill and interaction with the enviroment.Third person pixelart melee/shooter with PS1 3D graphics. Tracking magic, melee when they are too close (or not waste mana). You run through linear fantasy enviroments, everything you smash give you mana. Certain ways to kill give you more mana or "special" mana, to open to other magic. Around the level you find bosses, with certain tactics you open to new paths (story bits, alternative paths in the level). Some bosses parts if smashed give you new abilities. If you are really good it escalates more and more and you see the true ending. Exploration, secrets, use the enviroment to kill.. kinda immersive sim but in an arcade point of view :P As said, save mana is key, so enviromental kills are a must. In few months i'll start to show something, if interested i'll tell you here when it's time. Other small project i have is a party based game in first person, kinda Might & Magic 6 (not grid movement) but with more tactical approach, realtime as possible. Class based abilities with time to use them so other members need to protect them. Scouting, sneaking before combat, etc. But still need to think about it before prototyping (and finish the current game :P).
