www.londonwingc... ► Wing Chun is well known for Seeking the Bridge, but you are really asking to be punched in the face. This is because another use of this Wing Chun technique is to 'Ask' for a punch. By simply placing your hands forward you are basically asking someone to punch you. This sounds dangerous but there are many benefits to holding the centre ground and letting the attacker punch you.
So, Man Sao relates well as an effective self defence technique. The term literally translates as 'Asking' or ‘Questioning’ arm, but is often referred to as the ‘Inquisitive’ arm of Wing Chun. Man Sao is often thought of as the guard hand of Wing Chun. Contrary to this miss understanding Man Sao is not typically a guard as in other martial arts.
Guard hands in other martial arts or boxing are typically a technique of protecting the head or body from the attacker’s punches. The idea being that the arms stay close to the head in order to prevent strikes landing. In Wing Chun, the idea is not necessarily a way of blocking punches. Instead, Man Sao is a technique of moving between offensive and defensive action. The shape is a method of obtaining a link or a contact (referred to in Wing Chun as a Bridge) between two bodies. It is simply a method of seeking and/or establishing contact with an attacker.
We discuss why this technique is important to control distance to your attacker, and how this technique can be used to set up a Wing Chun Chain Punches for Self Defence (also watch • A Beginners Guide to W... ). Remember, the purpose of Man Sao is to bridge contact with an attacker in order to control that person’s movement, space, and distance. The next video will cover how to use the Man Sao Wing Chun technique to set up a a trap by using a probing technique.

Great video. The level of detail shows that real skill is not "flashy". Great to see technical information on actual application of wing chun techniques under pressure. Love it!

Nice demonstration: however, you should never reveal your stance in a real-life confrontation as what that does is escalate the attack against you, as your attacker will surmise that you're experienced and know what you're doing. He/she may therefore be inclined to attack you with a weapon, or even attempt to charge at you, all of which would result in a very ugly confrontation. If you place your hands front-center, the attacker may also attempt to go low, not just throw a hay-maker. Don't reveal what you're capable of and the attacker will have to guess, giving you a better advantage.

excellent. you are not throwing 46 punches that require his arm to be outstretched for 20 seconds, you are not doing lop after lop to the same arm, etc. you are displacing the power of the initial strike and immediately attack with great power directly to the center line only what's necessary. I respect William Cheung, for example, but I would possibly prefer to work with you. you move as though you have actual practical combat experience. great video, brother. much love and god bless.

good clear explanations...don't just practice the techniques but apply it..just like boxing if you only practice the technique on the bag and have the perfect jab, hook, uppercut but if you can't apply it in a match it does no good...don't think that pro boxers like tyson is dumb, he is a genius that knows how to use the techniques in a match..gotta be smart enough to apply the techniques or don't learn any martial arts and just try to get away from the situation

Another great video, your wing chun seems so natural compared to leung tings lineage.Do I observe well that you put in your shoulder a little bit with punching?, not that far as a boxer for sure. But I think the power generation is more natural this way.

Nice explanation sifu. May i ask: i did pretty much sparring in the last month and i find it very difficult to do those defences / intercept of the attacks against a moving opponent, espacially if he acts like a boxer with feints, jab cross hook combinations etc. Do you have any advice or explanation on that?

My name is George and I’m from Western Canada enjoy watching your videos I too am a student of Wing Chun I’ve been training now for about 39 years and really enjoy this system and would not trade systems for anything some day I like to meet and train with you. Don’t know if you may have heard of Vancouver Island in Western Canada right across the Georgia Strait from Vancouver BC but yes I watch your videos and you offer some great insite on the system keep up the good work now also I am the only Black student in my class so it is nice to see another Black person especially an instructor pass on information that very interesting I also occasionally watch Master Wong but like your videos much better. Thanks and take care

Once again valuable ideas ie arms forward. I've thought for some time that the regular" fence position" is too passive & if a fence is necessary then the situation isn't looking good in terms that of it becoming physical

Always wondered how wing Chun could be applied in a street fight situation and haven't seen good examples until now! Do you recommend any good schools in central Florida? Thanks again! Nino

There's no energy in those 'strikes'. Besides if you cant (learn to give and) take a shot in a controlled environment what chance have you got on the street. Learning & practicing Self Defence often times involves being hit and finding yourself in physically (as well as mentally) uncomfortable positions/situations. I dont mean to be rude, it seems obvious that you stumbled upon this channel accidentally perhaps while looking for the ballerina channel, but instead of 'Grizzly' maybe you should call yourself 'babys buttocks'.

@Outrider74

Depends on how hard and how well you train. Most of the time, the problem is not the technique, but the lack of practice or lack of application.
@Pij23
@Pij23 4 года назад
@@Outrider74 you could have just trained boxing. It's simple and more effective
@Outrider74
@Outrider74 4 года назад
@@Pij23 Yes, and I've trained boxing techniques. While boxing is simpler overall, it's no less demanding insofar as techniques and combos requiring repeated practice over and over. Plus, whereas boxing relies on the closed fist, Wing Chun uses open hands frequently. The problem with closed fists is that you can run the risk of breaking bones in the hand (as I've seen people do in actual street fights). With the open hand, there's more chance to inflict damage without breaking hand bones.
@Pij23

@@Outrider74 I've trained Wing Chun too but I only found a few techniques that are actually effective that Wing Chun offers. Well as Bruce Lee said. Use what's effective and dump the useless techniques

once, years ago three turds surrounded me, after putting the loudest down the others attaccked me from different sides, i put by instinct a muay tai guard, i don t even know why, i never do stuff like that😂 in the begin of the brawl, i was on guard "in front of" a guy, but two of others were on my sides, so my first question in a split of a second was," who is the closest to me?" i want to tell, there are too many windows for attacckers while in this few seconds we have to decide fight or run for your life, sometimes its better run off. sometimes is worset cuz running means turning your back to those fuckers, and even god wouldnt know:/ Best hit and run thou...i guess😅 i hope its understandable this story its true and make me much aware so far. always great videos and perfect forms💪🏼🌄💚☕take care.

lol. I think the grammar is wrong on your title. The Title says, without a comma, You are asking to be punched in the face(when)doing Wing Chun. (I just typed it backward for the sake of the sentence)

sifu As martial artist if we were in a situation would it be ok to throw the first punch ,in protecting yourself before the situation escalates
@fightscience
@fightscience 9 лет назад
+Ash Mohd Ah, this is a tricky question that is hard to give a black and white answer. There are so many variables to consider in a self defence situation. However the key factor maybe the country that you live in. In some countries it may be more acceptable or necessary than others. For example, here in the UK (London) we have the issue of reasonable force. Perhaps for us here in London there has to be more of a justification for hitting first. Of course, it would be interesting to hear what other people think, or even what experiences you may have has in other countries? Anyway, thanks for the great question and watching our video on Wing Chun.
@daleiverson6822
@daleiverson6822 6 лет назад
Depending on the country, it would have to be established that harm is intended even if not delivered by the potential attacker. If the intent is apparent, you certainly don't have to wait for him to hurt you.

I hear alot of people talk about structure in wing chun. could you please elaborate on that?? like when they say, "structure and not strength".
@fightscience
@fightscience 7 лет назад
+Daanish Panjwani structure is the simple alignment of the skeleton structure (at the joints) so that you can withstand force. Think holding a press up position (it's easy right because the joint of your arm is in alignment). Now compare to holding in a bent arm position. This takes up your muscle process. I hope this makes sense. Otherwise ask your Sifu. Have a great day.
