Hey chums,
We had to cut the video a little bit short this week as Tom is getting married this weekend meaning I needed to have the video finished before we went to his wedding on Saturday.
Anyway I hope you enjoy this weeks video and we'll be back in a couple of weeks.
Enjoy the show folks.
Stef.

I think that it is not just the fact that we distract ourselves from a "real social life" which makes people depressive. It is also the fact that you are constantly confronted with the perfect life of other people. Obviously nobody´s life is perfect, but in social media it is all about the perfect shot, the perfect look and make up, funny and exceptional things people do in their leisure time. It is a very materialistic world, since it is more and more used from the big companies for commercial purposes. But this is not real life...most of the time it is posed. And people spend lots of time aiming for the exact same perfect life or expensive things and start struggling when they realise, that the designer bag or the high end make up product doesn´t make you feel any better. Sorry for any spelling mistake. I am not a native speaker :) Greetings from Germany! I love your videos. They always make my sundays.

I definitely agree with you. In my opinion when we're using social media we feel like we're in a different world where everyone's living a perfect life and everything's perfect, while in reality it is not. It's this difference between "social media life" and "real life", in which there are ups and downs, that make us unhappy. I'm gonna try your experiment Stef, greetings from Italy! :)

I agree with you! I feel so insecure and like I am on a hamster wheel and I’ll never reach the level of others. I’m trying to lose weight and constantly see people on social media and think I wish I looked like them I wish I had their life and their house and car etc. I feel so much pressure to be like them and that everything I do means nothing I stress and worry every day and I feel like I’ll never be good enough

Interesting one with smart phones... at Christmas I decided to get rid of my iPhone and replace it with a flip phone (flip one just because it's fun haha) and it's actually changed my life. Sure, I have my laptop at home if I need it but when I'm out and about or with friends or family I am just *being*. No distractions, no notifications, no useless scrolling. I'm living life, seeing new things, noticing new natural beauties. It's quite something. Not to be all philosophical but I think we've really missed a trick with smart phones and social media. In a bid to make us more interconnected, we've have made ourselves less connected than ever before. I worry so much for the next generation, growing up with all this so engrained in their society, but I'm hopeful that they'll find a new, healthy balance so they can learn how to really live in this world when social media is everywhere. Really glad you guys are doing this - I hope it'll change you like it's changed me! I never want to go back to having a smart phone.

I'm curious, how has this worked out for social outings? I definitely want to cut out/down time spent on my smart phone but most of the people I know will still be browsing on their mobiles while we're out so it would be like going out alone :/. Obviously don't want to be a nagging person but also feel it will be weird sat there being fully aware that everyone else is on their phones.
@anniebacon1635
@anniebacon1635 6 лет назад
This is an interesting one! I have found a couple of times that I have been sat there with others on their phones, but it's been a great opportunity for them to recognise themselves being on their phones and become more present! It also makes you think though, what's the point in going out if you're just browsing on your phone? You could do that anywhere haha. Maybe start by asking people direct questions and getting conversations going? (instead of calling them out for being on their phones - I have been guilty of that!) That way people are off their phones and don't feel like they're being criticised for being antisocial etc. Just a few thoughts! good luck :)

Claire Walker I was kind of shocked and sad reading your comment! I'm assuming you must both be younger than me? I am 30 and whilst I know many people who are addicted to/over use social media, i don't think I've ever gone on a social outing with friends where everybody just sat on their phones. That would still be considered extremely rude by most people I know! I'm curious as to whether it's where I live, or is it an age thing? I've seen younger teenagers doing this out and about but you both seem older than that. Maybe because I'm at the age where we didn't have smartphones as teenagers, we kind of missed out on that aspect of the early social conditioning of smartphones.

I'm 32 :). To be fair it isn't the whole time, though if you sit in a coffee shop and someone just checks something on their phone it can become 20 minutes of checking Facebook/Twitter/WhatsApp, constantly trying to catch up with everything going on at once. I like the idea of sparking conversation (not that I haven't been in the past!).
@anniebacon1635
@anniebacon1635 6 лет назад
I totally get that, I've been guilty of that myself, which is one of the reasons I got rid of my phone! You can end up just sitting there on it and completely forgetting that you're in company or you could be doing something else - it's so addictive!

I think what scares me about everyone being glued to their phones, is that they don’t notice if someone needs help, they are completely unaware of what’s happening around them. I remember ones sitting in the subway and seeing a man in the distance getting an epileptic attack, and literally no one around him noticed . Even though I was further away I got up and ran over to see if I could do anything . Sadly I was the only one. There are people in need all the time, and we keep missing it.

I decided to give up Instagram on New Years Day after coming to realise how toxic it had become to me and how slowly and gradually I was slipping back into my depression. Social media has become a virtual competition of who is seen as perfect and popular. I found myself constantly comparing my own life to others, wondering why I didn't have the most exciting social life and why I didn't look a certain way. Yes, social media has positive aspects such as a way to connect with others you probably wouldn't have otherwise, however the way in which consumers use the platforms now has developed these social sites into degrading and self-consuming black holes. Even if I were completely self-content and happy with my own life, allowing myself to go back onto Instagram would only contribute to continuous self-doubt and conjure up silly reasons to hate my life. Thank you for bringing up the topic x

Definitely agree with the detox , I did a full month in December, it was lovely to have Christmas without feeling pressured to buy stuff, or even what others brought. At 23 it reminded me of secondary school days, less social media more happiness. Also I'm not sure if anyone agrees but taking time out of the digital world, helped me focus more on local news, just everyday stuff.
@neilstevens9796
@neilstevens9796 6 лет назад
As an illustrator / graphic artist, the likes of twitter and instagram have been so helpful as a tool of self promotion and getting inspired by other creatives. But in December last year I just got fed up with it. And switched them off my phone / iPad etc. It's now March and i've not looked back. And if i'm honest i've received more work in that period and by going to events and exhibitions met more people who inspire me than just endless scrolling on my phone. I think i'll be ditching twitter completely as no matter how hard you try the moaning and self righteous brigade and political nonsense always gets into your feed so i'm done with that, but I will return to instagram. But for the last three months being without them has definitely enriched my life and left me feeling less anxious, from comparing yourself to your contemporaries, less angry from all the humble brags, showing off and nonsense and made me just get on within being. Recommend it whole heartedly. As let's be honest, it's just a load of bollocks really.

I recently noticed how dependent I became on social media over the last 2 to 3 months due to stress and frustration and putting energy into something that would actually change my future (I'm avoiding the word 'planning'). And I kind of escaped myself because I did not want to feel as toxic and under pressure. Thank you for talking about happiness and the relation to social media. You reminded me that maybe my escaping is the whole issue. Oh and I love Graysons personality, I feel like he's growing into an amazing person. Lots of love from Germany!

I've started my digital detox about over a month ago and i couldn't be more relaxed and joyful. I can go on my laptop if i really need to check anything but the langer u take a brake the less u feel the urge to even check your social media, you kind of forget it exists when you don't need it and you get so much more time to think about what you need and want and it's easier to just change the bad habits. I recommend it to anyone who thinks they may need it because we all need it for sure! Love the vid btw, greetings from Belgium

Michalaks: I have been one of those silent viewers that never really comments but has the absolute best time every sunday pretty much since little Grayson was born (lol please don't think I'm creepy!) It is a pleasure to see you and your family grow and become the incredibly talented & dedicated people that you are! Just needed to leave a word about this week's video because it is just brilliant. I loved the content (going on a 1 month social media detox myself, right after this) and the cinematography was just beautiful. This belongs on a big screen. Stef, I'm loving the new & improved latte art segment, I laugh out loud every time (mainly because I can definitely relate to the struggle!). Hannah: you are so inspiring to all of us out here coming out of a difficult moment and trying to be better women (and human beings), I am always astonished at your strength and courage in your every day life and can only wish to grow up to be half as kind. Thank you so much for the joy, laughter, time and effort you share with us. I am immensely grateful ❤

I started working at a nursery in January this year and that has actually “cured” or “lightened” my social media-obsession. I wouldn’t say I was totally addicted to it before but now that I don’t have the time and can’t have my phone with me during the day I actually don’t feel the need to constantly check what’s going on. It’s really refreshing.

One of my favourite videos from you guys. We are a generation of social media addicts and it is so unhealthy! Love the thought behind this. I think social media has had a large role to play with rising depression stats. I can also relate to Hannah's bit about feeling like a whole new woman after Rufus being more settled and having a normal bedtime.. having that time to yourself and looking after yourself makes the world of difference. My son was born a couple of days after Rufus so it's been amazing watching your videos and relating to certain parts of yours guys' life. Thanks for sharing, all the way from New Zealand 😊👍💕

I take a weekend a month off of technology. No phone, computer, television etc. My friends know this and respect it. If they need me they know to either wait till Monday or just pop over to have a proper chat. I have found this little break from the craziness of the world, to be so wonderful for my mental wellbeing. It reconnects me to nature, my daughter, and most importantly myself. As a mum you sometimes need to distinguish/separate between “mum” and “me”. Much love you guys.

How do you define Happiness? A simple Yes or No to your question does not cover the spectrum of the happiness rainbow. Of course, going without social media will allow you to be more present. Although i do agree with the problem of addiction and instant gratification social media sometimes provides, it is a CHOICE we make. You do have the freedom of choice to look at the screen or look at your child. We do hold some responsibility of the obsessive comparisons and gorging on social media. In saying that, it's nice to have a reminder to turn off the screen and tune into the reality around us 🤗🤗

Greetings from the middle of the US where Dorothy and her ruby slippers reside.....I went off of social media for 6 months and my depression fog lifted and I felt more confident in who I was as a person apart from what anyone else thought. It was liberating. I recently went back onto Instagram but not until watching this video did I realize how toxic it really is for me. My depression and anxiety have taken on a new and ugly form and I want to take back control. Deleting my account and also taking a step away from RU-vid (my daily companion in a world of stay at home motherhood with a one and three year old) to connect with myself and REAL friends! Every time I watch a video you upload I get lost in how mystical you are able to make such mundane daily life look. I need someone to document my life for a day, edit it and put it to beautifully fitting music, cutting out the tantrums (from mommy) and let me sit down to watch it and look at what a beautiful life I really do live.

Two years ago I went through this major shut down and decided to get rid off my smart phone and replace it with a regular nokia,, This summer was the best 3 months of my life. I used to get up in the morning, take my bike and go all the way down to the beach where I would sit and draw and read and write and then would return home to relax and eat and that was pretty much it . As days went by I realized how much I loved drawing, so I got on with something that filled me with life and I could finally express myself. Days were brighter and fuller and more meaningful. At one point I decided to post my sketches and thoughts on Instagram. At first I was borrowing my father's phone but after some time it was necessary that I bought my own phone, just for practical reasons. At first I was so happy thanks to all the positive feedback I would get for my work and all these yes nods for everything I was thinking. But as time went by, I think I was drawing just to post on Instagram. My work wasn't filled with honesty and self expression.. Just this need to be liked and accepted.. Ultimately, I think it's all about finding yourself and what kind of life suits you.. Each period of time has its own unique traits and therefore calls us to rediscover who we are in it. I don't know why I wrote all this, I think it's probably because I started watching your videos that summer, and your work reminds me of this life circle.. makes me wonder what the next step should be.. Kisses from Greece

You’ve inspired me to try, as I’m continuously stretched from work, currently training as a teacher, and selling a house. So I feel I kind of need this time away from all the information. Thanks, guys!

I loved this vlog. Missed this types of vlogs :) When I saw your Nokias guys, I thought of getting myself one as well, good old times.And good point with social media. I am not that much into it but still probably too much. Since 3 years, I realized that I cannot fall asleep. It worried me a bit as this was never the case before. Then I just decided to stay away from my laptop and phone when I come home from the office. That was a game changer. I go to bed, take my book, I read few minutes and sleep like a baby!

We are going to have a quiet week from you Stef maybe quite a good idea!!! I notice loads of people just sitting down and on their phones in coffee shops and restaurant's couples not speaking. We are becoming people who do not talk and obviously do not write letters anymore. I am of the generation where I used to write letters its always lovely to see old letters as I did the other day whilst clearing out photo albums and letters from my Mum's flat where there was a postcard which my Grandma had written to my Grandad (whom I never met) before they got married it was so lovely.

I loved this weeks vlog! Such an important message, we really don't need our phones to be happy, yet I'm one of those who never put it down! I'm going to try and detox next week! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

Absolutely love seeing the clips of the boys playing, so sweet!! Also, Hannah - I’m currently in that “lost in baby” stage, I don’t mind it at all, I love being engrossed in my son’s happiness but I can definitely relate to the feeling about forgetting who you are for a while. I hope I can feel a bit more normal and myself when he gets a bit older.

Yes and no. My grandmother said something to me recently that was quite valid. 40 years ago people where just as anti social. Heads still looked down on busses and trains the only difference is people had their heads stuck in newspapers not iPhones. People have not changed the method in which they are being twats has.

I couldn't agree with this more! There's an iconic photo of a train carriage of people, dating back decades, and the ironic thing is that they are just as 'antisocial' as us whilst reading their newspapers. Unfortunately, I don't know how to link the photo, but it's super easy to find. I guess it puts life into perspective, things don't change that quickly!

It's true. My son always has his face in a book and we have to pry them away from him so he'll eat a family meal or bathe. I literally have to ban library books from our house, or dole them out one a week. : /

Agreed. But still it's sad when you see a group of friends or a couple being in their phones instead when hanging out.

I recently left my phone charger at a friend's house overnight, so I put my phone on airplane mode to save battery until I got the charger back, and it ended up being so lovely and freeing. It scares me sometimes to think about how many hours of my life I've spent mindlessly scrolling through pictures and posts I don't really care about. In all honesty I'd forgotten about that day, but this video has inspired me to try it again, and maybe even make it a regular thing. Thanks for the inspo, and for another absolutely stellar video. Especially loving all of the sketches at the moment - really hope those are here to stay! x

Are you happy? It's a good question. I think most of the time we would answer with YES just out of the subconscious. To make ourselfs feeling better, to not show others our real feelings, to not have to explain our emotions. But to answer those three words with a NO could make a huge difference. To admit that you're not feeling well isn't a bad thing, it's not something that makes you weak. Everybody is feeling bad sometimes, some stages of life are just shitty. But it's a good thing to speak out loud. Tell others so they can help you. Everything you said in this weeks video is so true: we isolate ourselfs by using our phones, our creativity shrinks, our human relationships break. I'm so happy I'm part of the generation that grew up with barely any high tech things around. It's a blessing and I hope we can all come back to this one day. To spread positivity and love in the world. Thank you💕

I have so much fun watching you guys.. it's one of the best moments of my week. And at the moment I don't use facebook and other social medias. It's been 6 months since I stopped using them mainly for political opinios that I didn't want to see or discuss with most people. And I needed some time for myself too. Sometimes I think about going back on making part of some of those medias, but I don't fell ready yet. I know comunicating on line can be fun, but it requires we to be well enough to don't let it take more time from our lives than it should. And I think some detox from everything that we do or use to much is good sometimes (I still drink too much coffee for example). Lots of love from Brazil.

Last year I experimented for 3 months with turning my phone off for 2 hours every day, it gave me time to bring myself back down to reality and concentrate on myself. Definitely going to do it again!

As a 25 year old creative ... I am finding it SO hard to find the balance between tech time and mental health time. I deleted my Facebook at the start of the year and it has been so uplifting not to have it in my life BUT I’m missing out on networking in the art industry and job postings through the groups I was part of and I’m struggling with that. I’m trying to cut down on others too, I really only use Instagram because It’s great for visual creators and twitter for updates. But as someone who is trying to start a creative career, social media and digital networking is a STRONG element of this now and part of me wishes it wasn’t. Balance and moderation ! And finding new ways to spread art. X
