Base 987.2 Boxster had a new 2.9L engine but it wasn’t DFI. Only the 987.2S’s 3.4L engine got DFI during the 2009 facelift. Still a big improvement over the base 987.1.

Have the Base 987.2 2009 Boxster 6speed MT since new. Correct Jonathan, Base has no DFI-therefore no bore scoring as reported in the 3.4L S version. Base 2.9L is the best engine & most reliable. Have 136000 kms. Only major repairs, clutch cables @ 96000 kms, and replaced brake lines @ 135000 kms due to early corrosion (I also drive it on clean salt free days in winter which explains the corrosion). Other than that, annual oil changes (or 12000 kms), brake fluid flush each 2 yrs, cabin filter, blow out radiator grills & drains. Spark plugs @ 60000kms or 4yrs. Better to change them then than to have difficulty removing them and stripping the threads in the aluminum block. Still on original coils- redesign of coil packs in 2009 allows easy inspection for cracks on spark plug change interval. If any one is cracked, change all six. Mine are still fine surprisingly! Battery replacement at 5 yrs. Almost as reliable as my 4Runner, and that is saying something! Cheers.

Old fashioned port injection in the 2.9 instead of the 3.4's newfangled DFI may sound like a downgrade, until you realise that the intake valves of early DFI engines (of all makes) eventually get caked with oily soot. A good squirt of petrol over the back of the intake valves in the 2.9 keeps the engine nice.

Boxster S Gen2 is definitely a future classic - 305 BHP and PDK. No IMS and DF injection.

I just bought 3.4 Boxster S. Absolutely love it but the steering wheel feels so heavy compared to normal new city cars i am used to haha.

I have a 987.2 these car have the sort after hydraulic steering hence the weight, I was surprised when I first drove mine compared to my BMW electric steering! The 987 steering is a gem!

Standing joke among some 987.2 owners is that their car should have been called the 988, due to the extensive mechanical improvements made to what should have been a simple mid-cycle face lift. Temoore's claim that the car will become a collectible may well turn out to be correct. Cars like these are no longer being made and appeal to drivers who appreciate the analogue driving experience.

7 to 25 percent of all boxsters will have an ims. Bearing that will explode and destroy the engine which is a $20,000 repair that’s a good reason not to buy one. Not only that notorious engine leaks and a host of other major mechanical issues with these vehicles they’re pure junk but they look nice

@Richard S don’t need to. Just read the reviews and repair forums. Thought about buying one then read the horror stories. That’s why boxsters don’t hold their value. They are poorly designed cars which was proved in court they lost a class action lawsuit a few years back and Porsche had to pay hundred of millions of dollars to customers. If you can get one for cheap with the ims bearing fixed Snd engine seals fixed then maybe it be worth picking one of these up for a few grand. But you have to go in knowing your buying junk

Second owner of a 2009 Boxster here. I've had mine for 3 years, and am happy to say the car has been very reliable and trouble free. I did my homework before buying, and made a deliberate decision to avoid water cooled Porsches made before 2009. Every car maker has its share of heroes and dogs, and Porsche is no exception. What makes Porsche a bit different is that they cost a fair bit more than other cars, so buyer expectations are raised accordingly. The advice offered on this video is largely correct.
