I own a 2011 Range Rover supercharged. I LOVE IT. It was a one owner, I saw the service records from the previous owner, I bought it from a Land Rover dealer and, it's a joy to drive. Just like any other vehicle, if you prepare yourself for things down the road you won't be disappointed.
We are long time Range Rover fans and have owned a totaI of 8 in our lifetime. Now that we are retired, we own two Range Rovers, a 98 P38 and and a 06 322. The 98 I bought with the intention of finding a great accident free body with no rust and good paint. My plan was to have the engine, drivetrain and all engine related stuff rebuilt or replaced so that I could have a daily driver. I now have an excellent 98 RR P38 with low miles that looks greatand runs awesome. We have taken several vacation trips this summer with 0 problems. We got the 06 RR on lease when it was new and then bought it after the lease and it is my spouses daily driver. Our secret to owning Land Rover Range Rovers is to find great local mechanics that can fix anything. We have a small shop in our town with great mechanics that let me buy the parts and charge me for the installations. For example: Range Rover dealer wanted $3,000 for a transmission problem on the 06 which cost me about $700 at my local shop. So our cost of owership is comparable to that Toyota Corolla mentioned in the video. We love our Range Rovers and will probably keep them forever.
Never had a Range Rover yet but ive had many used BMWs that i loved dearly. They are also supposedly unreliable and never had a single issue apart from basic maintenance which is not expensive if you have good mechanic which you should.
I owned the Range Rover Classic until it was 13 years old and currently have a P38 that I bought new in 2001. I do as much work on it myself as I can, and avoid the dealer like the plague! There are places with quality parts such as Atlantic British. When the air suspension fails, get the air suspension replacement kit that gives you a regular suspension and that will eliminate a lot of future Range Rover repairs. If you added all that I spent on it and divide it by the 17 years that I've owned it, it actually is pretty affordable.
I’ve had a LR D1 and currently have a 2003 LR D2. They are great rigs. If you wrench on your own vehicles, the cost to maintain the vehicle is manageable
This is a great video- I subscribed and liked as I can truly relate to it. I bought an 03 Range Rover HSE in 07 for 38K. I kept it for 10 years and when in 2017 the transmission died with 189,000 on the clock I traded it for a 2012 HSE Supercharged. I got $2500 for the undrivable 03 and spent 30K on the '12 SC. In 10 years I can honestly say that I would not recommend anyone buying a BMW 4.4 RR. I Spent over 40K in repairs including changing my air suspension after 90K miles twice and eventually doing the expensive repair of switching to coils. Once I switched to the 2012 it made my old 03 feel like a go cart- the improvement was unbelievable. After 105K miles on my '12 SC though I had to replace timing chain, Supercharger, fuel injectors, spark plugs, front suspension rods and got 4 new Pirelli Scorpion Verde 275/45/20 tires and one tail light that was leaking that needed to be replaced. Total cost for 2017 alone on top of my purchase price was 12K- so I was beginning to feel like deja vu with when I had the 03. I now have 117K miles on it and have gone 9 months and 12K miles without a single service cost. It drives like a dream. I'm thinking because I have now replaced so many of the major flaws with it with new parts now it just feels like a new vehicle. I have already decided I am going to drive it until it can't anymore. I has aged beautifully- black on black, leather barely has a crease on it, even on the driver's seat and people truly think it is brand new. I have had the same issue with you with the sun visor, but I really don't care. It fits in the broken hook just fine and because the car drives so smoothly it just stays in place and doesn't move. I honestly have never tried my volume knob because I use the steering controls constantly but the last time I checked it, it worked fine. I don't have any creeks or squeaks like yours (probably because it has never been taken off road). Even my rubber seals around doors and roof are all perfect. I only had to replace both rubber seals on the edges of the rear windshield which had totally corroded. So all in all I am going to keep this as long as I can going forward- I love it that much. I f eventually the cost of any individual repair becomes more than that of the vehicle itself, as what happened to me before then I will just search for the best Range Rover 40K can afford all over again. I just want people to know that- yes it is more trouble free to buy a new RR SC and get the warranty, but if you truly weigh up the cost of depreciation of buying an out of warranty 4 year old and use that savings for the cost of repairs moving forward it will cost you way less money in the long run- especially if you invest the difference on a new car payment. Range Rovers get a bad wrap and the older models should for their reliability, but the driving experience of a newer model and improved reliability for me at least is well worth it. We are all individuals though of course and they are not for everybody nor will many agree with my summary here. Thank you so much for all your information though as this is a great channel to dicover for someone having a very similar vehicle experience.
That seems horrible and costly. But I suppose it's not always going to make sense--especially if the owner enjoys the driving experience. That's the value you pay for I suppose.
You pay for driving a top end vehicle but driving exp is well worth it a2017 honda or a 07 rover the rover will make you feel like a king and look like a king its up too you"
The last Range Rover we had was a 05..with the BMW Engine..Vanos, timing chain, a lot of cooling system components, and air bag suspension consistently failed..maybe the vanos and timing chain didn’t fail after replaced..but everything else did..always dealer serviced..still the best suv I’ve ever driven..but without warranty..they can keep it
EXCELLENT REVIEW !!! Well balanced and I exactly have that experience and feeling driving my l322 4.4 HSE BMW engine ( happy with German engine ! ). I consider to buy another one since I need two cars & can’t afford to break down and wait repair ! I have an ML MERCEDES but confident to part exchange with a more recent L322
jjmarz1001 You couldn’t have said it best..in less you have a warranty or of course a 👉disposable income👈😂😂..it’s a fun suv to have..really makes you feel invincible
I love this video, as it is so true....My 1997 P38A has been faultless for the 18 months I've had it because I keep an eye on it.... From basic oil changes to the suspension height, right down to trim pieces... If you suspect a small problem, fix it so you avoid bigger problems! They are pretty much like any Luxury car to be fair! Just keep an eye on them :)
And honestly, I wish that's something more people would wrap their heads around! They're like any other luxury car; just keep an eye on stuff! If you do that, they'll be perfectly fine. I've been dying to buy a P38A to do videos to show what they're like when you actually take care of them!
Yes absolutely, I bought a 2001 P38 4.6 V8 and it's been the best and most reliable car I've had, after 10 years it's still goes. One problem that is common is the porous block common on those 4.6 V8s though and mine is now showing symptoms which means a top hat liner but I paid £7000 for it and even with that rather expensive work it's still paid for itself several times over.
@@BreakdownAutomotive I would love a P38A comparison/review on it against either L322 or just on its own :) My dad had a 2005 L322 Supercharged 5-years ago, its a beautiful car, yet felt so different to the P38A......I couldn't quite describe it, but the P38A just feels antique, not dated... just a completely different driving experience ;) L322 was solid, precise, and heavy....P38A was a little lighter on it's feet, yet just as capable :) This channel is so true about RR ownership, and car ownership in general :)
Bought a Discovery 4 same spec Santorini Black with black interior and black piano wood trim! Also same year 2011 and bought with same miles as your L322 98K
It sounds absolutely beautiful! The LR4 looks so menacing in black! I'm actually not sure how that mode affects the diffs. I would assume it would, but I might be completely wrong. It might rely more on traction control for that, but I would assume it would lock at times.
And also a maintained Range Rover is also very expensive, but when we have money to buy a Range Rover ,we can buy a used one,but I am not so rich to buy it,so I will by the Lexus lx 450 ,no issues with maintenance ,just buy in half or even lesser price, also it looks more better, and I get enough luxury,as a car guy ,I don't want that high level luxury, and if I just do some tuning in the engine,I will be able to go much faster than a Range Rover ,also if I travel through a forest, the Range Rover will suffer a lot of damages in body panels and the hard wares and also the software, whereas I will not be annoyed with such a problem and reaching home ,it will still look the way it used to
mines done 259000 so far and no real issues.. I abuse it but service very regular. it's iconic in every way, it's at home off road or outside a nice hotel and has a class of its own as the original hi end go anywhere vehicle used by royalty.. chew on it haters it's no 1
Love my 2008 SC. Comfortable, quiet and fast. Also have a 2000 RR that I believe was well maintained as everything works and it does not even leak oil. 99 to 2001 are the best years for these Gen2 Range Rovers as BMW was onboard during their build.
@@BreakdownAutomotive so...quick good search (nothing too extensive) shows YOU'RE car is longer than mine (by a few millimetres [do you have those in North America?]) so as to why you have less room in the back than I do...no idea. Gonna take a punt on the fact that your engine is bigger? I have the 3.0 diesel (coz you've have to be rich or stupid to own a petrol range rover here). Maybe with a bigger engine everything is pushed back?! but then if I look at my engine it looks tiny inside the engine bay....
There's nothing like owning a range rover , i have a tdv8 2008 average 30mpg in a v8 is perfect for me in supreme confort. Also no problems , just thermostat and oil changes.
This gentleman keeps talking about hiccups and normal mishaps that happen to “any luxury car” as if it were some sort of virtue. Well, no! Rovers are beautiful and a lot of fun to drive, when they aren’t stranded at the side of the road, or living at the dealership for weeks while they try to figure out what new electrical problem it has. The truth is that underneath that beautiful body and beneath the leather and nice interiors, there usually is a cancer lurking and waiting to come out!
RK first of all, al the vehicles you mention are indeed crap as well. As to the fortuner, it isn’t even in this class... that would be the Land Cruiser and please, as to what reliability is concerned, don’t even try to pretend the Rover is better than the LC. By the way, come on, dude, nobody believes the fortuner is so plagued with problems as all the others. The fortuner is based on the Hilux platform and this vehicles is legendary for its reliability, as are the Tacoma’s and 4runners which do not directly compete with the luxurious Land Rover, but are a lot more reliable.
Had a BMW 645 beautiful car that had to be scrapped due to electrical cancer and failing plastic components all over the place plastic and heat you just can't overcome that wonderful on a Sunday Day Cruise play comes a time when financially is too painful. The thing is that motor manufacturers use parts from each other there is planned failure of these parts and the price of parts is sometimes 1000%+ over what they cost to make. It stinks.
You are telling there is nothing better than Range Rover in terms of capabilities ,but I can beat this with a Mazda truck ,also it is more reliable and Durable
If you can find one with a solid service history, you'll be good. Weirdly, mileage won't make a huge difference IF service was done regularly. There's a 2006 L322 that someone here has owned since new, and it looks like it's in better condition than mine.
If you embraced the diesel V6 and V8 engines you would would really see the +ive side as they do not have half the isdues of the petrols plus keep up manufactures maintenance and you would have the issue. In the UK very few have these issues. Over in europe we judt do not recognise these issue that you have in North america. Is this due to a combination of our law and how we maintain cars and the laws around the responcibilities of the suppliers and manufactures i do not know. But i guess they do have something to do with it . With unlimited miles warrenties prepaid service plans Annual government vehicle inspections etc. Do not het me wrong you can get abused cars. Most people only keep car 3 years and normally at 10 to 15 years only we scrap them. Plus our cars are very expensive so peopke do look aftet them. What do you mean by major service items. There are that that much that is not taken car of at standard service. Prepaid service plan for 3 years about £1200 ($1800) what is there to pay with and extend 3 year warrenty costing similar theres nothi g major to pay out.
The 2004 -2007 Range Rovers HSE are crap! I bought a brand new '04 model, kept up the maintenance, took great care of it and it just malfunctioned and stopped in the middle of the highway with my child in the car. Reliability?? They're dressed up junk! The computers in the years and models I mentioned malfunction constantly. There's a reason Land Rover has had several lemon lawsuits against them. I would never trust a Range Rover in an off-road situation. Give me a Hummer and be done with it.
I just recently purchased a 2011 range rover sport. It has been my dream car since forever. I did know that buying this car would come with a few problems. But, all in all, I totally love this car and could never imagine driving anything else! The problem is that after the 2014 model, I don't like the new look. They changed the whole look which is what originally attracted me to the range rover. Therefore, I am going to have to take excellent care of this car. This car has now become my inspiration to go to work each day!😂
If one has plenty of money and no sense to buy a cheaper, more mechanical SUV that won't give fits every time something needs fixed. Keep your electronic gewgaws and whistles.
There is nothing remotely good about a range rover. They are horrific crap money pits. They are British. Brits dont buy them. Our cost of living is stupid so we dont really buy them...but u guys go ahead and buy them lol. Bang for ur buck being the build quality
