Last week, we talked all about finding an L322 Range Rover that was in good cosmetic condition if you're looking for a used one. We went through the process of finding a list of used Range Rovers that would be good to inspect more at a dealership or in person. If you missed the last video, check that out in the I above. Today, though, we're talking about what to inspect once you get there to test drive the L322 Range Rover.

First up, let's talk a bit more about cosmetics. In a picture in the last video, I pointed out something about the paint in one example. In order to check it out more closely, we have a few options. For the most part, the paint should look like it blends in normally. It's not always the end of the world if a car has been repainted if it's been done properly, but the issues come when it was done cheaply and poorly since it will affect your resell value and could also mean other cheap fixes have been done.
By no means am I a paint expect, and a pre-purchase inspection can tell you more about it, but before you waste your money, there are a few things you can do to check for paint quality. First up, check for overspray and runs in the paint. This is a huge indication that it's been repainted at some point. Paint is near perfect when the car comes off the assembly line, and on something like this, there should never be any overspray or runs in the paint. I'll link a video below showing you what that looks like.
Moving on to the interior, check that the seats have just normal stretching and wear on them. Every L322 I've seen has stretched leather on the side of the seats, but make sure it's not cracked or torn. Not only does it get very annoying, it's also ridiculously expensive to replace with genuine parts.
For the air suspension, make sure it raises and lowers correctly without throwing any faults. It's still the dealerships car, so test EVERYTHING, and please never listen to their BS excuses of “oh, that's just normal.” If it doesn't seem normal, it's not, and falling for the trap makes it your issue.
I test drove an LR4 once at a Chevrolet dealership, and when I tested the air suspension, a fault came up telling me the vehicle was raising slowly. The salesman said “Oh, they all do that. It's normal with this weather.”
Assuming all is working well, start up the engine and open the hood. Listen for any unusual noises, and if there are any you have a question about, make a note of it for your Pre-Purchase Inspection. It could be nothing, but it's better to make sure first.
Timing chain replacement on 2010 to 2012 models can be common, so if you hear a knocking on the engine that increases when the engine is revved, consider walking away. The last thing you want is to inherit someone's old problems.
If the used Range Rover you're looking at is on a Land Rover lot, it's a little more trustworthy. They know the car, and if it's a few years old, they've probably kept it because it's in decent condition and won't risk screwing more loyal Land Rover customers. Most of the time. Keep in mind, they're in it for profit too, so if it's at a Land Rover dealer, find an independent shop to do the inspection that specializes in Land Rovers. Normally, if there's a dealership, an indy shop will be nearby.
If the used Range Rover you're looking at isn't at a Land Rover dealership, I'd recommend taking it to a Land Rover dealer for them to inspect; however, indy shops work fine too. Above all else, just have someone inspect it if you're not confident in your own skills to fix it. They'll be able to point out the problems and give you estimates for fixes to help you negotiate or walk away.
On top of that, don't let the dealership or private party refuse to let you have it inspected. It doesn't matter if it's the perfect spec you've been looking for on the outside. If you can't have it inspected, don't bother. We drove the 4 Series over an hour to have it inspected, and the dealer had no problem with us doing that. It's your money on the line - not the dealers. Get it inspected if it's the only part of this series you take with you.
So assuming everything looks good and the inspection is setup, we're another step closer to buying a used Range Rover. Next episode, we'll talk about what to do with the inspection report, how to negotiate the price based on the report, and what to do once you've purchased it.

I would say one of the biggest things to look for is that subtle jerking when driving forward over a flat paved road. It is very hard to notice if you aren't paying attention or looking for it specifically. It will kind of feel like the transmission shifting, but it's not. It is the transfer case. If you notice it, watch your revs, if the needle isn't moving and you still feel it, it's the transfer case. This is an extremely expensive repair 8-9k and it will only get progressively worse as you drive it.

When test driving remember to check the heater. This is easy to forget, especially if test driving in the summer months when most people just check that the air con works. If the heater blower makes whirring noises, sometimes not until a minute or more after the blower starts, something is not right and it should be looked at. The blower is pretty quiet when on auto but there shouldn't be any other audible noises that start with or shortly after it.

So true. Found a sweet 2010 Supercharged a month ago in another state and after I put down a nominal down payment, had it pre purchase inspected. Check engine light was on and A/C needed servicing as well. I'm still waiting for them to finalize the repairs on it before the final prepurchase inspection can be done. Beginning to have doubts if it's all worth it mann.

Bonnet /hood struts best replaced with wood 2x1 inch can be pine but better still oak last for ever and most important no head damage otherwise just use a crash helmet but they dont come cheap if you have a motorcycle then not an issue !!!!!!!!!! remember if the hood falls on your helmet it must be re placed !!!!!

Question, you stated to take it somewhere to get inspected (a close by independent shop) but do the dealerships or third party dealerships typically allow that, to have the vehicle taken off their lot to be inspected somewhere else? I can see maybe bringing a trustworthy mechanic along to inspect the vehicle on their lot but taking it off their lot before you have bought the vehicle, is that pretty normal to do? Thanks, Great Video.

You young man do talk tooo much but so do I /me But and a big but you are good yep good !!!!!!! When buying any car look at the price tag that sets the sceene is it right is it wrong and take it from there.. Most tell you to check this and that etc etc All a load of bolocks as we say over here in the U.K. !!! There are so many con men/women out there us mere mortals don't stand a chance so look for these clues and you will not go wrong well almost not wrong !!! 1 Are all the tyres the same make dont worry about tread are they the same 2 Has it got a full service history dont worry about main dealers cos they just rip you off 3 Is it warm when you arrive or cold 4 Has it been valeted the best is when they have not 5 Look at where you are buying it from if dealer is it a nice place or a dump same goes for the house and garden is it neat and tidy or a shambles Tidy house tidy car etc etc 6 Listen to what the seller says dealer full of bulshit or private also full of bulshit if sensible we are now getting closer to buying 7 How many owners has it had the fewer the better people only sell bad cars or some every two /three years 8 Whats the milage if very low its good if very high its good the middle of the road could mean everything is coming to its end 9 Go by your gut feel this is often the best judge you will ever have To date I have followed these examples and owned many R/Rovers and other cars I have only been conned once When you buy anything used expect faults and dont beat yourself up !!!!! Anything thats old will have faults that includes us humans so budjet accordingly but remember if you cant do it yourself then an expensive car will be expensive to fix Personaly a R/Rover is worth every penny great to drive and will ,yes will ,make you feel a hundred dollars or pounds does not matter what anyone says it will !! The only car that put me on equal terms was an Aston but even that could not do what the Rangie could All the above can be done without feeling silly at time of inspection Last but not least if very low milage check the steering wheel and pedals for wear this always gives the game away GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH and thankyou young man for a good vid !! Stay healthy Stay safe from all over the pond We do get on do we not ?????????????????

In my opinion and from experience of using range rover’s starting with 1986,1989,1992,1994,2001 and know 2011 …. The most reliable year is 1992 and it’s more reliable than Toyota …. The 2011 I just bought looks clean and it drives and looks as the classic Range Rover and that’s why I bought it … is it normal to hear ticking noise from engine after starting when in normal operating temperature but disappear after maybe a minute?

No Replace with new battery and perform a hard reset Unplug battery cables and use a wire or metal to touch both cable ends together, turn key on for about 15 mins to get rid of any and all current, this will reset all computers and get rid of the transmission warning

@@lonniewhite4262 I've owned a number of range rovers (although not an L322). I drove a classic RR to Mongolia and back. Rebuilding hubs and suspension components in the desert was fun. When I got my used Range Rover i took it directly to a good independent mechanic that works on euro cars and range rovers. Spent $3,000 on preventative maintenance. Had it for a year no problems. But I prematurely change all those parts I knew were going to go bad. To me it’s worth it because you basically have an 80,000 car for 20 grand.
