Ridge Roamer explores why he bought a Triumph Tiger 900 and why a Tiger Rally edition may be the better mid size adventure motorcycle for you too. The Yamaha T7 offers great value, but many of its design choices and component limitations hold it back when compared to the higher end Triumph Tiger Rally, in what may be the best overall mid-size ADV bike.

I bought a Yamaha T7, and the main reason was for simplicity. I ride more off-road than on and not looking for all the bells and whistles of traction control ect. When you are far away and in the middle of nowhere I want a bike that has minimal things to go wrong and the T7 is minimalistic. The T7 has more than enough power for off road. The Triumph is a great bike and owners will love it, but for me I am more than happy with the T7 and no plans to swap.

Yes simple is better. The amount of times I've been out with guys on ktm adventure bikes and triumph ect.everyvtime we get to a hill or loose ground they have to stop and scroll through menus to find a rider aids. I hate tech .

Just got a 900 GT. Love it. Sales guy asked, gonna do much off-road? My answer was no. The tiger is a street beast. Slim , powerful and a great view forward. If Yamaha had kept up on production, I would have owns one, but I’m absolutely in love with my new triumph.

Very nice. After waiting for two years, finally got a 2022 Tenere 700 last weekend. I came off a Super Tenere, so I never even considered the Tiger 900 because I thought it was too close in class to the S10. I alos own a WR250R and plan to ride the T700 more like that bike. I suppose at $10K versus $15K I won't feel as bad dropping a scratching it up.. Very surprised at all the pluses the Tiger had (especially the weight). Thanks for educating us.

I have had my Tiger 900 GT Pro for a year. I've added a few things to it and absolutely love it. A quick shifter is now a must have on any future bike. I use my bike in my Realtor Rides videos on my RU-vid channel. It's great being able to control your GoPro from the bike.

I have a 2023 900 GT-Pro...All road, never Dirt, and it's one of the best "Touring" Bikes out there...love it I had a 2021 GS, but prefer the nimble, lighter GT

How do you adjust the valves on the motorcycles? Do they have Shem valve adjustment and is the shim over the cam or under the cam where you have to take the cam out to check the clearance. Do they have simple rocker arms for adjustments that the owner can do themselves or is he stuck with a huge bill for a tune-up?

Great comparison, especially when only considering specifications. When you consider the use case of the two bikes (which is arguably even more important) the difference between the two is even greater. The best (and for me, only) argument for the T7 is price.

Owning a girly tiger 955i made me a believer in triples for adv stuff. I also like the 5+ gallon fuel capacity. The highway yeet of the triple is really nice. I also don't like the P-twins that have proliferated in the segment. So, I'm looking at the rally for all these reasons. But 5 grand is a lot of snacks and fuel, and the T7 is a good all arounder. But I do already have a lot of Triumph swag... :D Good vid, man. Great comparison.

I'm considering both. Here in southern ca you have a lot of high speed freeways to get to the trail/camping... however i'd probably only be putting miles on the freeway every so often... so a smaller, lower cost bike for around town and quick hour/2 hour rides might actually be the better investment w/ a Tenere. That being said they're the same weight so pushing it in and out of the garage is the same... idk. Good problems to have

I had a triple 900 engine from Triumph for 10 years. No problem whatsoever. The electronic is japanese on them, the injection is khenin and the suspension is Showa (like on the Africa twin). And the engine itself... mine had over 150000 km on it and no problem. But the 3 cilinder engine is pure fun and much more powerful and versatile

Thanks for an rational review and video. But I want to correct fuel consumption information. One of the mpg is imperial, another one is not. I mean, tenere’s fuel cons. is about 4.2, tiger’s is about 5.2. You can check the official uk site.

Great vid, although I'm not a fan of spec checking, much more important to try each, I have a Tiger 800xc and looking to go to the Rally pro, the T7 is just that much too tall for me, and although I love trails, its just too much off road bias for me

Here in India, only Yamaha and KTM are not launching their ADV line-up (although KTM does sell its 390 which isn't a true adv). All other manufacturers have their ADV line-up available. I'm waiting for Aprilia to launch the Tuareg 660 or will probably go for a 900 Rally by end of this year.

Thank you gor this great video very clear, informative and well made. Now if you get a Tiger 850 Rally it will be cheaper than the T7 and with Tiger 900 Rally equipped (crash bar etc..) the difference of price is more like $3k than $5k.

Really nice comparison video. I considered both bikes in addition to an Africa Twin, but went with the 900 Rally Pro exactly a year ago. I didn't care for the AT looks (just my opinion - some love them for their looks, obviously) - would have preferred the Honda reliability. And you simply couldn't get your hands on a Tenere. And when you could, in my area they were just as much $$ as the Rally Pro. I'm glad I went with the Triumph and I am loving it. And it didn't hurt that I could find anyone on RU-vid that had anything bad to say about it. It fits my riding style perfectly and is really comfortable to ride. I love the handlebars and riding position right out of the box, as well as the power and sound of the 3-cyl. And I love the tech it has and use all of it. I think I would have been disappointed in a Tenere had I bought one due to road comfort and the lack of tech (primarily cruise control and heated seats) especially after watching this video. Yes, the Yamaha, would have been very reliable, but so far the Triumph has been flawless and I think it's the best-looking mid-size ADV bike available. There isn't anything I've found that I don't like about the Rally Pro.

I had a Tiger 900 Rally Pro, sold it due to heat coming right onto my knees. Here is Texas, not pleasant. Had issue with bouncy front also. I have a T700 now and would not go back!

Heat has been a bit of an issue for me here in Australia too. I find that it settles down after a bit of riding, it’s not intolerable, but definitely something to think of.

Thanks for your review. Choosing between T7 rally edition, and Tiger rally. It comes with 2000$ difference. I am leaning towards Tiger, but Yamaha just looks more reliable and rugged. What would be your thoughts in such situation?

I went with the Tiger, but I also wanted the additional emphasis on street riding, with cruise control, a better seat, better wind protection, etc. All depends on how you plan to use it. I have my Yamaha WR250R for more intense dirt oriented rides.

I have a 2013 Tiger 800, I test rode 8 motorcycles a couple of weeks ago, one was the Tenere 700. I preferred my Tiger 800 to all the other bikes I rode. Though the Tenere was closest, its seat was very uncomfortable compared to the Tiger. Plus everything else you mentioned

I'm going to be buying my new adventure bike in the next few weeks, after we get past the holiday season. If I can get the 2023 T700 in Washington state for close to the list price ($10,499), I'm going with the T700. If the T700 is not available, or the price due to demand ticks up above $13,000, I'll be taking a close look at the Triumph Tiger 900.

I bought the Tiger 900GT Pro as my road bike last year, love it on road however don’t think I’ll be adventuring off-road with it so considering a mid size more off road suited adventure bike which is where the Tenere 700 interests me… though now you have me questioning that.. possibly KTM790?

Your math is a bit wrong. Dry weight is with no liquids at all (gas, oil, breaking fluid). The wet weight of T7 is advertized 204kg although some say it is concidered with a partially filled tank and it is more like 206kg full. The Rally Pro is advertised 228kg full on european website (of corse a couple kilos more than normal Rally). It makes it at least 20kg ~ 42lb more than T7, which is quite significant. Personnally I changed for T7 after 2 years on Tiger 800 XRT and definetly won't go back. I really love the simplicity of T7 with little electronics. Not mentionning the prices when going to the garage for checkups.

Nice vid., I have 23K on my Rally Pro and love it both on road and off. Only query on your video is that your assumption is that the difference in wet/dry weights is just fuel but I believe its every fluid including oil (engine/fork), coolant, and possibly even battery. Even though I'd still choose the Triumph as its a nicer place to be !

@@Mike-dj2in I can't remember what was said in the video Mike, but I get 200 miles and an MPG of low 50's. Also, even when the the miles remaining show zero, there always seems to be a few litres left in the tank. I should run it dry sometime to test it, but don't like pushing it unless I have to :D .

Great video. Thanks for posting. I am actually torn between these two and the base Honda Africa Twin as my potential next bike. I love Japanese reliability and the aftermarket upgrade options that are typically plentiful for them, but it’s tough to deny that you are missing out on some pretty useful features by going Tenere. I love the weight and features on the Tiger, but $5,000 is a lot more to spend for a bike that is going to ride pretty similarly at the end of the day. And what are maintenance costs like for a Triumph Tiger over time? I would get Japanese reliability back again and save a few bucks with the Honda AT, but it comes at the cost adding about 50lbs in weight. I like that the base AT has all of the features one would want though and is plenty capable off road too. It comes across as a big heavy bike that is barely a middleweight at all though. So, I’m still not sure where I will land but I like all three for different reasons. To add to the complexity, I will probably need a low seat and/or Touratech lowering kit for whichever bike I choose. Lots to think about. 😂 This was a strong argument for the Tiger, however. 👍🏾

Lots of good bikes on the market. Definitely a hard choice! A lot of times it comes down to location and relationship with your local dealers... who do you want to support you over the coming years of ownership.

"Japanese reliability". Let me share my experience with this talking point. I've owned 6 new Triumphs since 1998. Put on around 250k miles between them all. And I've had more recalls on the '18 Kawasaki H2 SX SE I've owned since new, than all those Triumphs put together. I've had to worry about rear wheel bearing failures, and now bad cam chain tensioners on my "reliable" Japanese bike. Not so much on all those Triumphs. Maintenance costs? Oil, filters, tires, chain, sprockets, and brake pads all cost the same no matter what the platform. 12k mile valve inspection doesn't mean they NEED to be adjusted every time. In fact, it's more a safety check at a convenient time, with 6k mile oil change intervals that pretty much everyone is doing these days with synthetic oils. It has been my experience that Triumph valves don't move enough to make them a concern compared to "Japanese reliability". I used my '20 Tiger 900 Rally to do 90% of the CO-BDR a couple years ago. It was quite enjoyable. My friends on their T7, 690s, KLR and DR650 all had just as much fun as I did :)

I remember when off-road motorcycles had rigid frame. With these kind of Adventure bikes you need to be seven feet tall and order to sit on one. BMW AirHeads had long-range travel suspension front and rear end would go all over the world. Ted Simon took a regular ordinary everyday 500 Triumph roading around and wrote a best-selling book about his travels. The adventurer needs to be in the rider more than the bike he rides.

Horses for courses as the Brits say =) Though considered downsizing from BMWs (GS/GSA) when the T7s finally came to US, I lost my job at that moment and had to pass. Fast forward to 2022 and I was financially ready for a new bike and had fallen in love with the Tiger 900 specs. Have ridden a few friend's T7s, but decided it wasn't for me...too pokey on the highway and handles like my XR650L in the twisties (the T7 is a delight off road though, I must say...like my XR but more power =D). This past November, I found a smokin deal on a nicely farkled 2021 Rally Pro with only 1400 miles... for less than the local sale price of a base Rally. First off, the BAD: that TFT is ridiculous, four formats, all suck. The vibration buzzzzz is bad (by my standards and what I was used to on GeeSers), but adding weights to the Barkbusters, grip buddies, and Rox anti-vibe risers has toned them down to tolerable levels. The risers (generally not a fan of them) improves ergos a bit for my personal fit and I now sit (and stand) as I did on my GS. That phone pocket under the seat...lolz...great place to carry documents tho. The GOOD....and it's very good: In true Triumph spirit, this thing is freaking outstanding in the twisties!* With those Brembos and on Sport mode, it rips! I had no idea a 21" front would handle so well (yeah, front end is soft...I'm 215 fully ATGATTed, and I have front preload to max...springs for sure in next few months). The quick-shifter is phenomenal, much better than the one of my 17 GSA. Bike is currently on AX41s...I can imagine it's even better on a more street oriented tire (the GTs have got to be a blast!!). Have not had much dirt time on it as I wanted to get familiar with controls, adjustt ergos, get to know it better before, but what little I have done has me excited for hitting the trails more aggressively. I have a feeling that the weights you are showing here are a little low...I've seen Cycl;e NEws actual measured wet weight at 505, but it does feel a lot lighter. Wind protection/buffeting, etc. is really good...much quieter around my head than both my BMWs, and easily adjusted on the fly. It's taken me a few hundred miles to get used to it (already doubled the mileage), but we have bonded and I'm very pleased with it. * Previously owned a 955i Street Triple/Daytona as my track bike.

Dude, I’m the same weight as you and have the same bike. There is no way you need different springs. Have you tried stiffening up the compression and rebound damping? Just turn them all clockwise as far as they go, and then go anticlockwise by two or three clicks. You’ll be amazed

@@lukeadv Thanks Luke! Yeah, I'm not done fiddling with the suspension so I will play with the comp/rebound settings as you suggest. Finally got some mild dirt time on it yesterday and I was surprised how quickly I got used to it! Loose, damp sandy gravel, small rocky sections, rutty climbs and drops...bike inspires confidence immediately (great control balance with torque, clutch, gear). Cant wait to spend more time in the dirt with it. Looking forward to trying out with camping/travel kit on-board (full Moskos, dry duffel, top case).

Big downer for people who do their own service... Triumphs warranty is sticky and depends on your relationship with the dealer... And service light reset and error codes can only be done at dealership(unless you have a triumph that can use the tuneecu app workaround). If you're going to work on your own bike, the Yamaha is the way to go

Hello - for me comparing numbers are not interesting. I need to sit on a bike and feel it, does it work or not. I tested the KTM 790 Rally and hated it, me and the bike we are not compatible. Then i jumped on the T7 and loved it, even is is worse in every single metric besides price copared to the KTM. At that time the Tuiger 900 wasnt available. I am still loving my T7 and bought myself a CRF300 to train myself to be able to handle a heavier bike better. So pelase go to a dealer, get the bike and have at least 2 hours of experience. Look in the mirror check how many smiles ber kilometer which bikes make. And then ride, dont invest to much in aftermarket parts, invest in gas and get yourself dirty. At least this is what works for me.

It really is a no brainer. The cruise control, tank volume, suspension and overall comfort with heated seat, heated grips, adjustable windscreen etc. the Tiger is simply the better choice. To even make a bike aimed for long distance travel without a cruise control in 2023 is really weird and most likely a deal breaker for a lot of buyers.

I would say Tenere 700 without gas weights 423 lbs (204kg wet - 16l * 0.75 (avg.gas density) = 192kg -> 423lbs)

Here in Mexico, the Tenere is more expensive than the Tiger Rally! Almost half way to the cost of the Rally Pro. Yamaha Mexico have lost their mind... Triumph all the way.

What I dislike about the Tiger 900 is the power ports used and their placement and the LACK of apple car play..... BUT for me thats not a deal breaker given I already plug in my Phone as I ride and use it for navigation and communication ...... I'd NEVER use that power box under the seat...... USELESS... The one concern I do have is the reported vibration..... I plan to test ride one this yr for the day to make my decision between the tiger 900 and Honda Africa Twin.......... Ive concluded the T7 is no longer a contender...... AND the A T may also get X of my SHORT list given I can't seen to get IN THE US the Color I like from HONDA ........ GRRRRRRR

Ok just to be clear, Tenere 700 is a bike with purpuose made conponents to fit a "big dirtbike" title... While Transalp, Tiger, GS (1200 not the 800, that thing is a gem), 790/890 adv (same for the Norden) are nornal bikes whiped and beaten in to good offroad behaviour. Consider any of these if youre and ADV tourer, if youre an dualsporter there are only 4 bikes that actually have dirt bike manners (T7, f800gs (NOT the 850, while okay its not the same as the 800), Tuareg 660 (on the border betwean light touring adv and dualsport like bike) and Africa Twin).

Thanks for weighing in! I'm curious what components you feel are purpose made on the T7 that aren't for others like the Triumph? If it was purpose made for the dirt, why the low slung exhaust? Lack of road going features doesn't make it purpose made for the dirt... It just means they didn't spend the money to incorporate extras.

@@RidgeRoamer swingarm, frame, crossplane twin, countershaft +squat +anti squat +static weight distribution that floats like a butterfly over rough terrain and at the same time sinks the front into the ground trough turns, the exhaust isnt low slung, its just too low for your personal preference is what it is. Its okay, most people buy their bikes by numbers and features, but im afraid if we get more people like you, buying bikes the way you do, were not getting any more pure dirt breeds, but rather a spec sheet motorcycle to adjust for lack of engineering. Oh and "lack of road going features".. what exactly is it missing? As i said before youre buying the specs sheet, not the motorcycle.

@@jakaberdajs4378 I have a WR250R and love it. It's a true dual sport, a street legal dirt bike. The T7 is too big and heavy to be considered a dual sport. It's squarely in the adventure bike category, meant for riding to your destination, then hitting some trails. So if you can get an adventure bike with all the extras the Tiger has, why wouldn't you? More power, better brakes, better suspension, more technology (ride modes, fuel maps, traction control, cruise control, heated grips, etc), adjustable wind protection, adjustable seat (which is way more comfortable), bigger tank with more range... all in a bike about the same size and weight, and still extremely capable off road. The T7 may be slightly better off-roader than the Tiger, but it's an adventure bike, not a dual sport. So I chose the better adventure bike, and have my 250 dual sport when needed.

I live my 900 Rally Pro but the gas mileage is nowhere the mid 50s. More like mid 40s.

Triumph has the stuffy old look of a bmw.for $5000 more than the tenere you get a triumph but for $5000 more than a triumph you get 2 tenere,s. We are not all wealthy especially old school bikers. $5000 spent on a t7 will make an awesome bike. They are both great but it's about which you like and can afford. I personally love the fact that t7 has no aids at all.

Be happy & not grump Orange/BMW people 😂 I tested thousands of bikes for over 40 years and can tell you there is no perfect bike, but there is one you might like better ❤

No joke You compare Apples to oranges😂🤣. Price tag is 50% more on Triump🤓, au Canada this 14k$ for yamaha and 21,4k$ for Triump🤪. For sure Triump is better! However, not sure is 150 % better than tenere. You havé what you paid😉

People say adv riding, but really want full motocross bikes 😂😂 It’s truly hard to make people happy on Dirt vs Asphalt 😅 Another equation, is age plus how much comfort you want out the bike for both purposes. The Tiger give great comfort for long rides with an ability to light trail rides. Is everyone clear 🤔😂

Teneree is bit overhyped, altho offers good value for the money and reliability. Modern trend is suddenly wanting to turn adventure bikes into dirtbikes, and thats kinda going too far into the whole "dirt road is the only road" aspect. Rally Pro is MUCH more comfortable to ride long distances than KTM890 or Teneree 700 imho, its day and night difference. BMW GSA is probably the king in that, but its getting into Huge Bike category with the other issues of such category has. Tiger is great middle sized one for long distance touring, camping, adventuring everywhere, not just overgrown dirt bike.
