My friend, being born and bred in RSA, at the age of 18, we had compulsory military service. As youngsters, we were forced into war with Russia, Cuba and Fapla. What it taught you is that life goes on. You mates will die next to you in war, but you need to stay focused. We couldn't get emotional or distracted by our mates death as it could cause your own death. . Mat has met his end like all of us eventually will do, but we understand, that it is God's will . It doesn't mean that we are ignorant or arrogant. It is because we understand God's will and the reality of life. This life is temporally. One day, we will all be united again.
