What Do Foreigners REALLY Think Of CAMBODIA
I arrived in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, in late December 2021. I had no idea what to expect - my expectations were low after spending 3 disappointing years in Bali.
I came to Cambodia at the time as it was the only country in Southeast Asia that opened its borders for international travel while the pandemic was still ongoing.
The government had the foresight to make it easy for international travelers to enter, unlike its neighboring countries, which still upheld quarantines or complicated and expensive procedures.
I’ve now been living in Cambodia for 2.5 years and I have no plans other than staying.
It’s the best country I’ve visited and lived in. I’ve lived in 7 countries on 3 continents over the past 4 decades. I’ve also traveled to many other countries for business or pleasure.
I believe that qualifies me as a seasoned international traveler and an experienced expat.
My Cambodia Uncovered Story So Far
I’m not close to finishing exploring Cambodia - I’ve only scratched the surface to better understand the country and its people.
That’s the main element of establishing a successful and happy life in any country -understanding its culture, practices, traditions, how things tick, and how to interact with people.
You can only function well as an expat in any country if you grasp and practice those basics.
Unfortunately, many expats worldwide don’t bother - instead, they remain in their bubbles with each other and don’t care about the country they’re living in or how its people see them.
And that’s why expats are often unpopular, particularly in Southeast Asia.
Next on my exploring calendar:
Sihanoukville, the Islands, Mondulkiri Province, the mountains of Mondulkiri, and the elephant sanctuaries.
I can only strongly recommend you visit Cambodia soon. You will not be disappointed!

After 10 years of Nicaragua, I'm ready for a change. My concern with Cambodia is the heat. In Nicaragua, air conditioning is not always required and my electric bill is usually about $30. So, where can an American go, in Cambodia, and feel relatively comfortable with the temperature? I have no problem with 92 degrees outside and 78-80 in the house. Cambodia is high on my list of next destinations, but I don't want to stay in all day and go out only at night. Thanks for the video.
@robshealthcrunch
@robshealthcrunch 26 дней назад
It gets hot but it’s manageable. Driving a motorcycle or going for a swim always helps. In the south by the sea in Kampot and Kep there’s always a nice breed keeping things cooler. I walk a lot each day around 10km and I’m fine with the heat and breeze. I work at a cafe with an outside terrace and they have fans, so again, that’s fine. At night I use the AC for 1 hour before bed to cool down the room, then turn it off and only use a fan. Don’t worry about the heat here, especially if you go south.

How about internet speed Thailand vs Cambodia? I’ve lived in Siem Reap for a while but it can get unreliable, and therefore more hard to keep up an online business. Or is Phnom Penh better?
@robshealthcrunch
@robshealthcrunch 29 дней назад
Internet in Thailand is mostly faster and more reliable. The problem in Cambodia is that there is only one too notch provider, Sinet, but they are expensive so many businesses opt for the cheaper ones that often drop, plus they choose cheaper plans with only 20 or so GB. PP is definitely better than SR as is small Kampot town.

I am interested in retiring in Kampot but I am wary. Do they have a decent hospital? Phnom Penh nightlife has become too expensive and Sihanoukville is a ghost town compared to 10 plus years ago. You don't have to visit the Thai immigration office every 3 months at all its online now, Cambodia easy for sure but for good reason, no doubt its laid back compared to Thailand but the country can't be compared to Thailand and is also more expensive with very few beaches, glad you enjoy it'
@robshealthcrunch
@robshealthcrunch 27 дней назад
It may be online but there is a lot of red tape in Thailand. Thailand is way more expensive than Cambodia! The police in Thailand also rob tourists daily for riding motorcycles that they can rent without a license but can’t drive without a license. It’s a set up money making scheme. Cambodia has everything Thailand does, beaches included and mountains too. It’s simply much smaller, easier to get around and the locals are so so much more friendly. I’ve been to Thailand many times and I can compare the two very well. I choose Cambodia as it’s much better placed to live

Despite Thailand having better infrastructure and healthcare system than Cambodia due to being ahead. I don't see much of a difference between the two countries. A foreigner might get Cambodian citizenship much easier than Thai.
@robshealthcrunch
@robshealthcrunch 17 дней назад
Oh there’s a massive difference. As I mentioned in the video (you clearly didn’t watch), working here as a foreigner is legal and you can set up your own business with low cost or work for locals. The cost of visas is 10% of that in Thailand, and there’s much less red tape, no police hassle, everyone and everything is carefree and easy-going !
@imperialkhmer6146
@imperialkhmer6146 16 дней назад
@@robshealthcrunchI did watch your video. I was referring to the landscape and geography of both countries ( Mountains, hills, Sea, Islands, and such.) I do agree Canbodia is more relax when it comes to Visa rules and regulations. This is why I mention you can get Cambodian citizenship much easier than Thai citizenship without having to marry a local. When Cambodia modernize and develop more on their healthcare and infrastructure there probably will be mass foreigners trying to relocate there in the future.
@robshealthcrunch
@robshealthcrunch 16 дней назад
@@imperialkhmer6146 well, the only difference is that Thailand is much larger so has more of the geographical places you mentioned. However, Cambodia has all of this too, just on a smaller scale, which for me is a bonus as traveling around Cambodia is easy and fast. I agree that infrastructure needs to be improved, such as roads, healthcare etc. But it’s not just the low cost of visas and easy-going regulations for foreigners to work here, it’s also because the local are so friendly and welcoming.
