Rob generally speaking overall, for a newbie to live in Cambodia for potential retirement would you recommend Kampot or Siem Reap or somewhere else? Cheers
@robshealthcrunch
@robshealthcrunch 3 часа назад
Well, that's not an easy answer and depends on how you want to live your life. Siem Reap is great, but the city is very small and aside from Angkor Wat, there isn't much else to do or see there. As a result, you're pretty much limited to the inner city, and walking around the small riverside. It's a busy nightlife place, so if you like that, it's good. Kampot is smaller again, but a very cool and diverse little place. Tons of great local and international restaurants, and mountain ranges all over for trekking, hiking or just hanging out. The riverside promenade in Kampot is large and the river too. It's only a 20-minute drive to the beach at Kep, 2 hours to Sihanoukville from where you can take a ferry to the Koh Rong islands, and 2.5 hours from Phom Penh. In summary, there's much more to do in Kampot than SR. The problem with SR is it's in the middle of nowhere, 6 6-hour drive from PP, and 8 to Pattaya for example. I felt way to isolated there and left after 8 months. I did enjoy Phnom Penh and have lived there 3 times for about 3 months each. But after a while, it became too much (noise and traffic), so I always left. It's worth visiting all 3 for 2 to 3 days each, and then see where you would like to settle.

I usually don’t comment but here goes…1. Foreigners are a MONEY BAG. 2. The objective of women in poor countries is to catch a money bag. 3. Object of foreigners are to have gorgeous lovers. 4. If the both of you did not have a public marriage ceremony that are approved by parents and are witnessed by her family, friends and/or neighbors; then you are nothing more than a money bay to her and her family. 5. Please check your ego and question; for an example, if you’re a 60 year old male, ask yourself why would a young vibrant lady find you attractive? Please be realistic. You’re an F’en money bag. Even if she says NO NO NO in the beginning…it’s in their nature hunt you down. Rinse and repeat. Helpful hint: they will pull the; “My so so is SICk, I need money for hospital.” Hint #2: Once she moved in, you’re pretty much FUCKED because now the ball is in her court. She can fake, lie or play victims to get what she wants. Please note that they play to your emotion. They play stupid because they know that’s what egocentric foreigners think of them. Yes, I visited Cambodia for 1.5 years during covid, so these are my observations. Please understand and respect the game. Gentlemen, I hope this helps. Stay happy. Stay healthy!!!

Hi Rob, I lived in Vancouver several years. Half of the year there, it was overcast and rainy. I loved it!. It kept me cooler while hiking or playing volleyball in the summer. I loved how the greens look greener. At night the light reflections on the street made my walk to home so romantic. I realized early that I’d never find time to hike, rock climb, or walk if I wait for the sun. Lots people who want it o move there, fear depression because of lack of sun. I was super happy there and miss it lots.

One advantage of living in the Pattaya area is the weather, has been very good, hardly any rain and low humidity. Also it’s great for playing sports, I play Pickle Ball and Badminton. 🏸 There is a gym here I use that has no aircon, it’s covered but has no walls so we get fresh air. I have a friend who’s 81 and he completed a 10K run today, more than 5,000 participants took part. On July 21 they hold an Iron Lung marathon, many roads will be closed and it’s a very popular event. Kudos to Pattaya for the many events that take place, unless you live here you don’t hear much about 😊.

Well, it's simple really. I lived in SR for 8 months and it becomes boring fast unless you are into getting drunk with the way out-of-control rough expats in SR. Besides Angkor Watt and the temple area, there's nowhere to go into nature. You are basically stuck in downtown SR. Kulen Moutain is nice, but it's a 2-hour drive. Kampot offers great restaurants, cafes, bars, nightlife, and tons of easily accessible nature, the beach at Kep is 20 minutes away (where I am heading now), Sihanoukville is 2 hours, and then a 30-minute ferry ride to the Koh Rong islands. "Coastal Cambodia" and this whole area offer far more than secluded SR. It's also only 2.5 hours to PP if you want some city vibes. There is live music in Kampot, not as much as SR, but there's plenty of good bars and nightlife.
