Just a heads up! I’m not saying this camera is a “waste of money” I actually purchased one for myself 🫣 but it wasn’t for the prores options or even the BRaw… Anyways… don’t get too rowdy in the comments section 😉

Sorry bud but you clearly do not know what you’re talking about 🫣 Or you should watch my other videos where I tell people to rig their cameras or share my rigged out Red Komodo 😂 I can shoot a whole commercial simply handheld on the s5ii, which I have! A true professional will shoot with what they need and actually know what they need instead of saying “all the pros do this, so I’m going to as well” Just my 2 cents

The price difference is not enough to warrant the term "waste of money". Both are expensive regardless and if you do client work, it's kinda an insignificant cost difference anyway. Get the X and future proof yourself should the need arise.

The S5iiX is a great camera you can grow into. Your currents clients might not want RAW but if all of a sudden you meet one who does, the upgrade is more simple than getting (Renting or buying) and learning a new system.
@AnthonyRodriguezz

I agree for the most part! The only thing is, if I’m working with clients that are demanding raw, they better be paying me enough to where I can afford a proper cinema camera.

@@AnthonyRodriguezz - When I started my production career over 10 years ago I bought great audio gear and rented cameras based on the job. Now that a $2,200 camera can do 90% of the jobs I’m cool with renting when the client DEMANDS RED or ARRI. If they are demanding merely RAW I’ll just keep the sub $1000 RAW investment and not spend the over $1000 in camera/lens rentals. In reality, I’ll just hire a cam op with a RED or ARRI because you typically get a cam op, the camera and all the camera gear for the price of a comprehensive rental.
@HGQjazz
@HGQjazz Год назад
If "all of a sudden a client" demands RAW, I buy the camera THEN and charge the customer accordingly. If I bought a new camera for every "just in case" or "future proof" scenario that marketing teams indoctrinate my mind with, I'd go broke.
@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528
Exactly. It's such an contrarian perspective. People keep acting like the ability to film to an SSD and shoot pro-res, RAW, B-RAW and high end All-I options are a con because of the external recording requirements... when none of the camera's around it's price range can record these options internally OR EXTERNALLY. The competition don't offer these options in anyway. Yes it's not ideal to record externally but as your production quality grows you can hang onto this camera for longer than having to splash out on higher end video cameras the minute you want to start exploring pro-res of RAW video recording.
@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528
@@HGQjazz If you bought a new camera for every customers need you'd go broke... To offer RAW on a S5iix only requires an investment of an external recorder for the rare situation when needed. An external recorder that can double as a monitor when not shooting RAW. To buy a camera that can offer RAW internally you're looking at either ONLY BMPCC cameras or cameras in the $5-10K at a minimum.

Appreciate the input Anthony. I've been on the fence on whether or not to return the S5II within the 30 day return window. I have decided that yes, I will return it and purchase the S5IIx, and here's why; - Future Proofing: I had my last DSLR for a long-ass time man, over 11 years. I was so blown away when I started looking at the improvements of the new mirrorless cameras, I had no idea so many improvements had been made. So, judging by my previous camera, I'm likely to have this one for quite a while. And if/when I do go to sell it, resale value will likely be higher and would recoup the $200 right there. - I agree with you on the file sizes and I doubt for the small business work that I do, on another RU-vid channel, that anyone would ever see the difference. So, not really planing on shooting Prores but it'll be nice to know that the capability is there if/when a client ever requests it. I may or may not get the Kondor Blue handle but just for simplicity sake on the SSD and the workflow, not interested in HUGE files. - Live Streaming: I have already done this at a couple of weddings and although it went off without a hitch, the ability to be able to do this right from the S5IIx is worth $200 to me right there. - Black Paint Job; A lot of reviewers mention that this is worth the price alone, and I do like it, but this is by far the least important thing to me. I doubt that I will ever have a single person notice it except myself and it did not influence my decision at all. Hope I can see all the dials in the dark when shooting events! - All in all, if I was not within my 30 day return window, there is no way I would take a big loss on the S5II just to get the X. Thanks for all your content man.

The '500 to 700 dollar price difference' was a little off. Maybe if the S5 ii had been out a little longer then sure the prices would be lower but right now it's more sitting at the S5 $1800 price range for used ones. Still spending a little less money but just not that big of a difference.

For me All-i, and ssd recording is a good option. The S5IIx in Hungary was 550000Ft(1577USD) the S5II 1400USD. It wasn't such a big difference, so I bought teh X model. I am with you on this. When I was buying my S5ii a few weeks back I was really going back and forth on whether to get the S5ii "now" or wait for the S5iiX in June for the several extra features. I ended up deciding that for my use case the S5ii was the better choice for a few reasons, the biggest being the ease of use. I actually love that the S5ii has a lowish bitrate that allows for the use of relatively cheap, high capacity media options, even in the highest recording qualities. I have two Sabrent 1TB v60 cards in the S5ii and they, one, work perfectly in all modes- 6k open gate, burst photography, etc- and two, are a fraction of the cost of v90 or CF Express cards. In addition to that, the files are extremely easy to work with in editing suites, unlike the larger file sizes that come with different codecs. You also don't need a bunch of extras with the S5ii to get the best out of it, no external recorder, no SSD and SSD holder that needs to be attached to cage a cage and so on. I estimate that by the time you add the cost of all those things to the S5iiX to unlock its full potential, you are going to be spending $3k or easily even more when it's all said and done. I think the one thing that would have made it a little more intriguing for me is if they had been able to add full frame 4k 48, 60 and 120fps. I am in the fortunate situation to also own a Canon R5, giving me raw and all-i codecs as well as full frame 60 and 120fps, so the omission of those things are not a huge deal to me, but that being said, I would have considered making a full switch over to Panasonic had they been able to offer those frame rates. I actually think that the R5 and S5ii compliment each other perfectly, and between the two they cover just about any situation a filmmaker/photographer could encounter, but that is a whole other discussion.

I disagree… being bulky and having more cables that can fail is pretty annoying. Saving $1-200 for another fail point on 3-10k shoots isn’t worth it imo You also wouldn’t need extremely large sd cards if you’re not shooting in ProRes which is the whole point of the video. Pretty counterintuitive if you ask me

Hi guys I need help and advise! I am an outdoor photographer and lately videographer too. My tours are adventure tours around the world in any weather conditions, desert, ice, heat, jungle, ocean etc. I just invested in a better filming set-up and chose the Lumix S5llx as lately the entire industry talk about this camera as the new 'affordable' standard camera. I started witha Canon M50 and I am happy to get to the next level now. So I bought it and now with all the features I get quite confused, I am not used to it and it makes me feal dumb to try something that seems so complicated, why didn't I started with easier cameras, but whatever. I don't know anybody who could teach me, so I turn to you guys. My criterias are 'just' high quality video that I could use my LUTs on them. I don't have a high-end editing set-up which would be my next investment, but I need to edit those files. My videos are often an hour long. I know the quality of the video depends more on the content, but I want to do the best out of the camera too. I don't want to film with huge mega files if I don't know how to use them😂. So what to do with this Prores or RAW videos? I don't think I need that, what is your advice guys, teach me and share your knowledge and experience, any advice is greatly appreciated guys What is the best settings for just using f.ex. 4K and apply my LUTs, in post or now even in Camera?

And here my perspective: 1. If the s5ii had ALL-intra then I might not have considered the s5iix. Gop files need computers that ...cost around 4000 today. 2. How many FF cameras have the ability to write PRORESS internally and how much do they cost? 3. How many FF, cameras are able to write to ssd proress and how much do they cost? 4. How much are 2 v90 256gb sd cards and how much is a 1tb or 2tb ssd? 5. I will agree that writing to an external ssd has some problems for the operation of the run & gun (cables, cages, base, etc.) but IT IS THE CHEAPEST SOLUTION. Greetings 🇬🇷🤘

For the money that cost the S5IIX, there are not just the external features, there is also all-I H264 up to 600mbps on sd cards, and that save time editing. Also the IIX still has subject recognition when monitoring the 6K or 5.9k! And the features you say are pricy to handle, are pricy on any camera doing that and the S5IIX is one of the cheapest doing that, so yes prore will cost but for those asking for that the camera is a bargain that's all! Also the b-raw of the s5IIX is the best to date, with higlight recovery it has a of dynamic range, can be converted in any log/gamut/ colorspace of davinci, almost perfect white balance recovery/ exposure recovery! And for the price it cost over a s5II you can decide or not to use those features but if prores is a client obligation, the versatility of that camrra is difficult to beat! And it has live stream support

It's a 10% difference in price. For many people shopping at this level, the camera body is only part of many many thousands of dollars of gear, so this isnt really a huge difference for them. I agree that no single one of the X's extra features is probably going to justify the difference for most people, but I do think that the combination of all of them is worth it. For me i would pay the difference just for the intraframe internal h264/265 codecs. ProRes internal and external, raw out, and the streaming stuff are just nice bonuses for me. Apart from this video being a warning beginners, I strongly disagree to most of what you said. If someone is looking at the SIIX, they probably (should) have already compared it to other cameras, Lumix SII included. So if they get the camera it's because they KNOW, they NEED that ProRes, or that BM RAW, they know they will include these workflow into their process. So they probably already have all of the knowledge, the media and the accessories they need in order to do so, or at least have planned for it. They might be already be using other ProRes or BM RAW capable cameras like the XH2S or the BMPCCs and want to include the SIIX in their arsenal. Getting a camera is an investment, it needs research and planning, and I think most people that are looking to get the SIIX don't need to be warned about the cost of ownership. Do all the people that are hyping, defending or have bought the camera know what to do with RAW or ProRes? Probably not. Recording to External SSD is much better because it's A LOT cheaper and A LOT faster. Modern NVMe like SN850X that can run pcie gen 4 speeds (this camera won't be able to support it fully) for 2 TB cost only 120 usd? Not a single SD card could match the durability, performance and price per GB of a good NVMe SSD. I understand your reasoning, but I still buy the X. First of all, I have the S5 (from almost launch day), and I'm sure I will at least do as long with the S5iiX... And longer, because my S5 will become the B-cam, and when the S5iiiX or S6X or whatever it will be called, I will only sell the S5 (that might even become a C-cam). However, the streaming and all-intra recording are also strong points which I really want. And BRAW in the future, although I hope it will be possible to SSD with an update. But I see myself buying a monitor in the next 12 months anyways, so the Blackmagic 12G 5 inch is a good option than. And about the rigging... True but you have your camera without the rig in five minutes or less. Sometimes i have my S5 also rigged just to be more 'professional' looking, at other moments i want stealth. But if you are shooting a giant doc with the red as an A then yeah this is a solid cheap B cam for those type of people.

Why is the ssd a problem? most people rig out there camera regardless so using a shoe doesn’t really matter and why spend more money on a smaller sd card when you can have a faster work flow with the ssd plug and play for less but with more storage. No brainer for me. Most people will need a monitor/ext recorder. I actually picked up a 4tb for storage. So let’s also forget about the sick blacked out body. 😂 well at least your footage looked good.

I understand your point and “most people” actually do not rig out their cameras. I prefer to not have more cabling, points of failure and technically SSDs aren’t cheaper if you’re looking at the size of files needed vs the storage you’re getting. What you’ll be recording to an sd card will be much smaller than the ssd stuff and if you’re just recording all I to an ssd, it’s more of a reason to keep it simple and not complicate things for little to no benefit

Nothing is more beautiful than an old car with rounded shapes and vintage colors. On the subject you mention, I think the main problem is the usb c power supply made impossible if an SSD is connected. File size and storage cost are a non-issue. @@AnthonyRodriguezz well for run and gun scenario with lots of movement in hand held its quite a big of a problem. Can’t be really compared to hollywood as their digital cameras like alexa has rolling shutter below 8ms compared to lumix 20+. And cine cameras are heavy so it compensates even that little rolling shutter effect they might have. fast-moving subjects can appear angled or sheared, and rapid camera movements are more likely to appear as a wobble. Effects are most pronounced with whip pans, fast subjects, high shutter speeds or run and gun type shots. Just try it yourself, try to shoot some hand held action scene ala extraction 2 or bourne with this camera and it will look like 🐕 💩. @@AnthonyRodriguezz Guess it depends on your work. I know of people that stopped using it because of rolling shutter, RU-vidr Patrick Tomasso has done videos about the issue for instance. There are factors that make it better/worse and more/less noticeable. The sensor read out is super slow on this camera which is so frustrating as I love everything else about it. If you shoot with long lenses for instance, especially on open gate 6.2k and pan you'll see the whole image becomes a wobble world. If you operate in APS-C UHD 4K 24p with a wide lens it is far less though, so there are ways to manage it. Shooting in a room with strobe for instance will be unusable on this camera but on the Fuji XH2S, their newer stacked sensor one, it's practically zero rolling shutter to the point that you can shoot strobe lights and it'll be perfect. It's APS-C though and missing some video assist features.

Other important upgrades on the X are the faster open gate modes - this is really nice if you shoot anamorphic. Also, If your use to a ProRes workflow I think this is a great addition. It’s 2023 - storage is cheap. The R3D files from my Komodo and Gemini are just as large if not larger. Also for long term when project footage is going to be archived we usually convert it over to H265 10bit 422 where it generally goes to retire on a NAS and can be resurrected in pretty good quality on the off chance it’s needed again in the future.

I think the price difference is so little between the two cameras and the fact that you have more open gate frame rate options, all- i as well as ProRes if you want it that the x is definitely the way to go. I did the math and 2 hours at 6k open gate ProRes 24 is about 1.4tb - that’s really not that bad and in line with my REDs, Alexa’s when we have rented them as well as the Varicam LT we had up until last year.

Great color grading, Anthony! Just ordered the S5IIX to replace my Sony A7RII. My main camera that I use since 2020 is the Blackmagic Pocket 4K (rigged and paired a lot of times with the Ronin M), but I only use it for my biggest projects, where normally I know I will be doing color grading and look building, basically for cinematography. However, I always wanted 4K 50p for some run and gun projects, events and thinks like that, where a light camera that I can either fly on my Ronin S or use handheld, and switch between those quickly, is paramount. With a versatile zoom lens and all Canon glass that I have, paired with the MC-21, I think I'll get the perfect light camera for videography, and a great B camera that I can match with my Pocket 4K properly. All that said, I understand why for some people, those features won't mean much, and specially for those who already have the S5II.

Currently a S5 owner, I do a lot of corporate stuff and I'm just starting to dip into the world of shooting RAW. Shot some stuff in Prores RAW but the workarounds for getting it into Davinci held me back considering the diminishing returns you're getting from RAW. I see the use cases for it but my stuff is usually in fairly controlled environments so I don't have to make huge adjustments in post. BUT, I am also starting to get into shooting some short film stuff, and I can see more use cases there, as real world environments can have so many factors out of your control. So for those situations the S5ii X is the perfect upgrade to get access to BRAW. I already have a Samsung T5 1TB to shoot BRAW externally and plenty of storage on a NAS to accommodate larger files, so the jump to shooting more RAW won't be too bad for me. A true cinema camera is on my "someday" list, but for now I can't wait to see what the S5ii X can do. EDIT: For anyone else coming across this comment, the S5 ii X does NOT shoot BRAW to USB-C, as clarified in the comments below. Although I have found a nice way to take advantage of ProRes Raw. Shoot ProRes on a USB-C and use that as my main working files, shoot ProRes RAW to a Ninja V as a backup and only access the files that I may have gotten something wrong or I perhaps need the extra flexibility in post. I'm willing to deal with converting a few files to Cine DNG as opposed to an entire project.

I'm a little late but having owned the S5iix since it launched I may say I'm not disappointed. I come from the S5 and still use it as a second body for stills and third body for video (GH5s is 2nd video body). For hybrid shooting is fantastic and I've done a couple of jobs recording on SSD. It's fantastic. The Lumix lenses are a little bit on the sharp/digital side but they are so good. 35mm and 85mm are my main. All the different record resolutions are a little too much at the beginning but since you can program a button to select your preferred resolutions it's just so easy and so handy to have all those sizes. You can experiment with them. specially since apsc is the only mode that has fast autofocus on video. but sometimes you can use the full frame if you don't have to rely a lot on autofocus. It's a camera for filmmakers not a point and shoot so you have to practice and learn a lot about it.

That's a dream come true! Unless you require a full sized HDMI port, open gate, better AF, and a few of the other S5II features - saving money and putting it toward lenses is a great option. I'm just having a hard time understanding why Panasonic released the S5II twice with minor upgrades that can be accomplished via firmware. Very odd!

Well, the Batman paint job that looks cool to the user yet attracts less attention from those members of the public whose attention you don't want is perhaps another reasons why the X might be another reason why some might think that they won't miss those 200 dollars.

Appreciate your input and makes a lot of sense, however even though I don't think I will use a lot of the pro features to begin with and will just record to an SD card with normal format to begin with, BUT it will be nice to have the options to use some of the more pro features in the future if I want to and hell that Blackout stealth look is worth the extra. Also, there's a deal on here in the UK where if you trade in £250 worth of camera gear with MBP you get a whopping £1000 off the camera, and the £250+ from MBP so I'll be getting a S5IIX, plus the 20-60 zoom, 35mm & 80mm for £2329 all in, absolute steal, so happy to pay a bit extra for the X. Thanks for the video, didn't consider how many SSD's I may have to buy to shoot in the pro formats.

If you already have the S5 with all the extra stuff anyway (I do) it's an easy decision. I want it for the improved auto focus. The S5 II doesn't make much sense for 200 bucks difference. You need to record to a SSD on the Sigma FP to get 4K raw it does 1080 raw internally ( I love that camera ). The T7 1TB attaches to the cage and is pretty small.

Personally, I think choosing the S5ii is stupid. You're cutting off all possibilities to save $200. Unless you're an existing Panasonic user, it's not a competitive choice with Sony. If you want a lightweight and simple camera, Sony is better.
