Back in 2014, I was in the Army and they really started cracking down on styles worn by African American women. I had had my sisterlocks for two years at this point with no drama, but then suddenly I had to cut them off and mediately. I almost left the military. But succumbed to their demands and cut my hair. Been miserable ever since with weaves and extensions damaging my hair. But I just got my second set! I plan to keep these for the rest of my life! I love your video, new subscriber!
Ahwwwww. I really touched by your journey. I cant even imagine how that must have felt-- the reality that your hair became the source of so much conflict. It's all so wrong! It's time out for all of this. I'm glad you found your way back to YOU!! I wish you all the best. Welcome home!!
I lost my job at a construction company; I wasn’t cute to the boss; 🐓. I haven’t missed a retightening though & never will . I went straight into sub- contracting with the Gov’t. God opened a better door. Personal Freedom at its best; now everyone wants to touch it. I’m like 👋👋👋
How do you know that your hair is the reason you lost your job??? I never had a problem and I started my locs in 1993 in Atl. working with all "white" people...Never one day of a problem..
@@brendaross2379 different strokes for different folks but it's not surprising at all. Some states passed a law were it is illegal to fire someone or not hire because of their locs.
I was afraid to watch this because I thought it would make me no longer want my locs. I’m happy I did. The military just accepted locs (in 2018) and I’m ready to begin my journey!
Just surfing different videos as I consider starting locs....I’m already sold on you as your first piece of advice was “you need to have a strong sense of self”. Much respect!!! You’re the first person to start with the real...
Ahwwww..I really appreciate you expressing this. I am humbled that my little experience can mean so much to some of my sisters and I don't take this for granted. You all bless me!!!
I used to love my friends locs and wanted mine to look like hers but she changed me when she said, your locs are your signature. I love being unique so that works for me.
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet. So basically this "sister-lock" process boils down to 3 words. It's a Committment. If you are mentally ready you will do fine.
Nothing but truth. Hair, especially for black women is very political. Going natural after completely shaving my head... I would go through my journey again and again and again to arrive at the place I am now. Truth ❤️
Hey sister! Doesnt it make you feel good when you aren't defined by your hair, which is what shaving or really short natural cuts do? I remember when I cut all mine off prior to growing it for locks. It was amazing..
@@TunisiaAli yes they are long.and sister locks need alot if maintanance and a profssional close by and i live in the village where not many women grow locks.i think maintaning sister locks would be difficult looool so ill keep mine now.also you and your hair are very beautiful.
I thank you for this chat!! I've been wearing sisterlocks for almost 8 years and it's been a hair journey and a life journey. I LOVE my locs and they are me. Your advice is spot on...your hair is YOUR hair and is going to be your hair.
Great video, but I laughed when you mentioned the distaste for your hair immediately after retightening. Some folks love that fresh look. I do not like the fresh look. I prefer between 3 to 4 weeks post retightening. By week 5 or 6 they are a bit messy, but braidouts help! It is funny how we all perceive our locks. Yours are beautiful of course!
This is a great video. You hit so many perspectives from a place of experience. I appreciate your time you took to talk to us. I’m newly locked almost 1 month - I’m ready to put the work in!
I am 7:46 minutes into the video and am trying not to laugh out loud about picking Cotten in Starbucks. So funny. I’m am researching Sisterlocks as I think they’re beautiful and would be a great lifestyle for me. I love the title and content of this video. Thank you!
Ahwwwww thank you!! You would have died if you saw me picking today ...om regressing back into my obsession for the last 3 weeks sigh!!! Sigh!!! I now carry my push pin and tweezers in my purse and st the red light, I PICK! Smh
Great video. Sad that people are still facing professional repercussions. With getting Sisterlocks in 1999 at IBM, I’d think the struggle would be less almost 20 years later. True about learning to maintain your own locks is crucial. Never be totally dependent. Take the retightening class!
Just starting to watch the video but certainly, all the moments you mentioned about relationship to our hair - cutting it off, wearing it natural - all of it i found to be true too! The last move especially is letting the grey come in. All of it, “having a strong sense of who you are”. Keep sharing good words
I absolutely loved this video and your entire presentation. I had my first set of locs for 8 years and now 3 years later I’m starting my second set much smaller with micro twists. I agree 100% with everything you said and plan to binge watching all of your videos as soon as possible. Thank you😊
I wanted sisterlocks for several years. I made my decision and stuck to my choice of total acceptance. I am elected official in a small town. I am investing on me.
Two years sister locks no products no lint . Just my natural oils people say all the time my locks look good. I agree with you on that make your self look pretty with your money. Stop giving it away.
You look, sound and talk like the actress Tasha Smith. It kept bothering me as I watched this video until I figured it out. Love your advice by the way!
Stumbled upon your video. I'm getting my sister locs installed next month. I'm so excited but nervous!! So appreciative of your video. Blessings to you!!
Thank you so much for this review I've been considering locs for a while and all the information you've have given still tells me I'm not ready YET. It will happen because there beautiful but I need to be 💯 percent all in. Thanks
This is such a helpful video!! You brought up some beautiful points. What you’re willing to invest in, is huge. I’m the same way. I don’t pay for certain things so we put our money into what we value so that’s a great point that a lot of women don’t make when they make sister lock videos. They just say how expensive they are but don’t factor in that it’s all about what you’re willing to invest it. Loved this and you have a beautiful set of loc’s!! I also loved the part about being solid within yourself before making that commitment. That’s what I always say because I’m natural and desire to have loc’s but when I’m ready. Thank you so much for this insight. I love loc videos!✨👑
I’ve been a loose natural for three years now...I’m obsessed with your channel I had my SL consultation yesterday and my establishment is in two weeks I’m so excited I wish I could get them sooner...
Thank you for this! I have been thinking about locks for like 2 years and have finally decided to take the plunge. I'm doing research and its so wonderful to hear about things to consider before I get them.
I’m only 4 minutes in and already love what you’re talking about. What you said so far is what I tell my clients but you made it simple and I will be sharing sharing sharing!
I'm with you on "pickin' cotton". Im always looking for anything in my locs. I'm semi freeform, washing often and oil moisturize. It works for me. Love your hair.
Girl Yes! I have an obsession with it!! I've seen unsightly locs when people arent really being vigilant and chekcing for lint. Thabk you for engaging the channel!
You are making me laugh sis!!! I'm so serious. See, if you find that funny, if you and I got together we would be in the floor!! Welcome to the channel. Stick around sister!!! Thank you oodles!
You're locs are beautiful. Thank you so much for this informative education! I thought locs were locs, but have always been partial to what I now know are Sisterlocs.
I’m a 1/3 of the way through this video and it’s amazingly real. All my friends are hyping me on locs but you are definitely bringing a different perspective! Thank you’
Love right back atcha my sister!! Thank you for watching. Yes, my hope is that these tips can apply to all us sisters who have small braids, or locks, or similar styles.
Thank you so much for the video ... love it. You have a new follower! I was on the fence about getting sisterlocks, watching your video has really help me make the decision to move forward. :)
Wow!!!! I wanna say THANK YOU!!!! I appreciate your honesty, I’m newly installed 2 weeks almost 3. At age 46 I so appreciate your honesty, I absolutely LOVE MY baby loc stage!!!! I will keep you updated. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Sisterlocks is not a natural hairstyle, it is the way you choose to wear your natural hair, they styling comes after. I know some people who consider sisterlocks have a hard time understanding that. Many always ask me can they be taken down. If you go in to it wondering if they can be taken down, then you definitely aren't ready to get them.
That actually makes sense to me. It's a way you can wear your natural hair. I never thought about that, but it's a precise way to describe. Natural would imply, we had to do nothing and were that way naturally. Yes! The idea of trying to take these down is exhausting. I always said I'd likely just cut mine out. But I've seen people actually taking them down. Whew!!!
Exactly. Your natural can exist the way it grows out of your scalp or you can choose to wear it a certain way,(Just like some naturals or AA in general like to wear their hair straight, pressed, or relaxed. But that's not a hairstyle, Just like Locks in themselves is not a hairstyle. Girl I had braid locks about 3 years ago, and I picked them out. It took me 2 months. It is not for the faint at heart!! I was interlocking them from he roots. I had 278 of them. I have over 500 and no way would I pick these out. Its exhausted and your fingers get ripped to shreds! lol.
@@godsflame2 oh boy! How in the world?? 2 months? Wow, I know me....I like to think I could do it, but the feeling like I wouldn't be getting anywhere would do me in! Sigh! What was the motivation to take them down? Did you lose a lot of hair, thinning, etc? Wow. 500 plus would take make 5 or 6 months. That would I would be potentially looking at. OMgosh! Whew!
A natural hair style in my opinion is hair that is not chemically treated. Loose, locs, or sister locs all have to be maintained. When it grows out of your scalp naturally, with out maintenance, it will be just matted hair. We always have to separate, twist, and plait our hair regardless, when it is untreated.
So true, I just start the journey, I lost my self confidence, but after 6 weeks, I start feeling good about my self, but I love it, thanks for this video
I'm in love with my sisterlocks, since 2005! Back then, I knew I was ready, nobody could tell me a thing about getting locs. It has been a wonderful journey! I try and explain to those who are considering getting locs that it will be an emotional, mental and spiritual journey! But YOU WILL KNOW when you're ready! I appreciate this information because it is so true especially, the part about having the "fresh look" I'm not a fan, Lol! Thank you Queen for enlightening us!
I'm 16 and I'm starting my local journey with microlocs..honestly I was in between the idea of getting them...after watching this video I thought back to when I cut my hair a lot of people said it wouldn't look good but it ended up looking great so I would like to try it...I'll maybe keep it for a year or more but I'm excited to try it
Absolutely Love This!!! Thank you for speaking to the soul of what it really means to be a woman taking this loc/life journey!!!! Beautifully said!!💕💕💕💕
I love your name "be grateful". Its one of my mantras and a major factor in how I came to be a healer and shift my entire way of life. I so believe in gratitude. Love it! Thanks for stopping by.
Wow I’m like #1000 and btw you are very funny and I’m glad I came across your video. I was struggling with the fact that I wanted locs. You definitely answered a lot of questions that I was wondering about. My struggle is the fact that me wearing weave has began to give me headaches. Plus I began to feel the need to embrace my natural everything. Beauty and all
Ut ooh!! Sister, sounds like you are in the throws of a spiritual awakening ! LOL! I'm serious. You know how it is when you change your hair and also the pull towards your natural beauty! I wish you love and light on this magnificent journey! Go for it!!!!
Tunisia Ali Thanks so much and I definitely am. I’m in the transition of accepting the change and it is definitely a spiritual awakening. God bless you also beautiful Queen 👑
This video is very special. I have traditional locs coils when I got my hair I hated how they looked omg my hairline wasn't grown in 😫 locs different sizes unbelievable. Now I'm 7 months I'm did come into acceptance though
Thank you Krystin!! I soooo appreciate you sharing. I know that feeling so well. The rough stages are a test of who we are, how much we self accept, and the degree to which we self validate. I'm glad you are giving yourself permission to be you and love you. Saaluh!!!!!! Yay!! Please share more of your of your journey as you watch other videos. I'd love to have you share!!
I’m preparing to start my loc journey and your video gave me the reassurance I needed to GO FOR IT. I’m dedicated to this and everything you said touched my soul! ♥️👏🏾 I get them next Saturday. I do have very dry hair; do you have any recommendations of products that would be great to start out with?
Hey SchalaZeal. I waited until about year 5 to color my hair with the vidal sasoon reddest red color. I was afraid, as I listened to what everyone else was saying. It did toughen my locks a bit, but once I stopped, just recently, I feel almost back to normal. I did it about every 2-4 months for 2 years. Thanks for commenting!!
Identity prob even more reason I think I might consider this for my daughters 4c hair. I just hate idea of covering all her hair all the time. I want her to be active and also not feel the need for so much fake hair. It's like eventually with all the fake hair it's like ya loose or miss her face and her features.
The sisterlocs consultant informed me that I have traction alopecia. I then went to a trichologist who informed me that I have that and a condition called CCCA (central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia) Besides the treatment, I can't wear wigs, plaits, nor cornrows!!! I had to cut my hair!!! It's been one week since I cut it into a short tapered style and yes it's freedom. Just get up, take out twists, moisturize and out the door! I just might not let my hair grow back, except for the situation on my scalp. CCCA is an inflammatory issue, so it's another red flag to change my eating.
I was going to get locs so I wouldn't have to do anything to my hair. But now that you explained all the maintenance that go into it, I'm not gonna get.. I just don't want to have to do a lot to my hair. Thanks for such detailed explanations.
Thank You SO MUCH! I have locs and was considering combing them out and getting sister locs because I wanted more volume. I hate box braids and I have very fine thin hair like a baby, so I KNOW I will not like those parts in my head, My hair looks thick even thought it isn't. I like that there isn't much maintenance with my locs. I only have to spray them with water and oil. I wash them every 2 weeks and re-twist every 5wks. I am 1yr in but my hair is longer than most people who are 3 yrs in. My hair is very healthy. I would not want to band my hair, so now I know sisterlocs are not for me.
If we follow the process that is explained by your certified sisterlocks installer then we won’t have slippage or it matting. We must give just as much time to looking after our hair just much when we deal with it in Afro. But I’m glad she said about education as I’m in education so I know it’s real for some facing discrimination like a friend of mine. But I love sisterlocks and I aim to get them done in October’s 2020
Yeah, thanks for reinforcing this. That's why I decided not to get Locs in general. 1. I dont know if I can to commit to a look. 2. While they generally are low maintenance since you only need to wash and retwist every month(or wash biweekly), I'm not one of those natural that can spend even close to 1000s on my hair every year. $70 a month is a lot. I know some places can charge even more than that to retwist.
You have a point. It's an investment. For me it saves me time and helps me.take the focus off of my hair.. This is invaluable to me..It is besT to consider what you know about yourself and what makes you comfortable.
Very good information for those considering Sisterlocks. But one thinks Tunisia, I never covered my hair, because I can't stand anything on my head when I sleep. Miraculously I don't have noticeable lint or breakage.
Sista No! Nooooooh! I'm so lock enjoying you! How the heck have you escaped this? I must admit, even though I know locks form with the help of lint, I am ABSOLUTELY sure I am prone to lint. I regularly check in with my locks due to lint and it's just a battle. You are too lucky!
Beautiful locs sister ♥️. I would do them this thin if I could find a ladies only facility as I'm in hijaab and in South Africa, here mostly men do locks. I've cut mine once before because I gave up, but now I do them myself and they're a little bit thicker. They're 2 years old this December, growing fast but dry and something unexpected happened just before I turned 35 this year, 4 grey hairs have popped out just out having at me, I'm not so chaffed about it even though I love people's salt n pepper hair strands. I lock them this way
Yes Sis! Embrace the gray. You probably look gorgeous. You could always consider installing them yourself or the next time you travel, get the install and just maintain them. You can train anyone to maintain them or you can easily learn to do it yourself.
It seems kinds tough, but believe me what you get in return is so worth it. And it doesnt take long. The payoff is the you get hair that's always ready. No more bad hair days!! Lol! Thanks for your comments!
Thank you for responding! One more question: I'm stuck in a wig/cornrow lifestyle. My hair is long underneath, but I'm tired of it and I'm starting to have breakage. Would I be able to wear wigs over the sisterlocks during the first year or so or would it be too bulky?
@@thescorpionstrikes Hmmmm....that's an interesting question. Without knowing your thickness, and length etc., it is hard to say. But for sure, you wouldn't want to get them and then have to braid them/tie them down to wear the wig. Since they would be settling, that would be ill-advised. But, I did wear a scarf the first few years and it didnt harm me at all. Once I would get home, I would take it off. But while wearing thescarf, my locks were longer, so I needed to pull them back into a LOOSE pony tail. It would have been possibly to much height for a wig, depending on the style wig. I hope this helps. Thank you for your commentary.
The cost of retwist is not bad at all. A sew in is over 200 for the install at a salon and that's minus the purchase of hair. I really like them, but I love changing my hair and sister locks are permanent, yes?
