I’m guessing the reason they stopped pedaling at times was because they passed others while crossing the yellow line (I think there’s a yellow line rule for this race). That’s also why he got an earful at the end of the race

I am really enjoying all your videos, but especially the Lower rank race commentary! Thanks. This particular race demonstrated one of your points so well - without a plan, these races are just like fast training rides, but with people you don't necessarily like. So many missed opportunities to make a defining move - like go to the front, then...sit up! Anyway, just want to thank you and Brian for these great videos!

what's the beef at 15:58? was justin mad that the guy sat up so quick after the sprint?
@Snorlax604
@Snorlax604 5 лет назад
It's that fact that the POV rider still had gas in the tank when he could've gone and closed the gap for his teammates on the prems/chase group in the final laps.

How strong do you have to be to start racing? Because these cat 4 races look just as hard as cat 1 races with lacking racing experience/technique.
@GOTHICforLIFE1
@GOTHICforLIFE1 5 лет назад
Well that is pretty accurate, but remember that these guys are also usually in the breakaway and top of the race. Cat 4 will have every sort of caliber riders. So stay with the main group in the beginning and move on from there once you feel like you finish the race with any spare energy
@許嘉宇-y5r
@許嘉宇-y5r 5 лет назад
For a flat course, it doesn't take much fitness if you just want to be a pack finisher and gain some experience. I usually manage to get around averaging 2.5~2.75W/kg for a cat 4 race with 42km/h average. Just go do your local race next week. Stop worrying, it's already July, the calendar isn't going to wait for you.
@okimy3668
@okimy3668 5 лет назад
Thanks for the responses. I'll see what I can do. Here in Germany it's pretty hard to find races and I want to find a club/team to ride with first. Sadly most people are way older (I'm still just 17) and imo that's not much fun. If you can stay in the main group with 2.5 to 2.75 w/kg I should be able to do that (my FTP is around 220 w and 3.4 w/kg).
@HeathyRoidz
@HeathyRoidz 5 лет назад
okimy well my ftp is 1W/kg more than yours, and I can win some races, and podiums... so you definitely can get on the peloton and stuff and I’m 15 too so yeah

I am confused why you guys were hard on him for going outside on the turn when he passes ten people only doing 200W and it’s the sheltered side. Do you have to yell out where you are on the exit of the turn or? (Early in the race)
@willross5108
@willross5108 5 лет назад
Justin- Good racing man! at 5:40 you want to be positioned to the left and much closer to the rider in front of you as you wait for the right to left cross wind to take effect upon exiting the turn you are using a less watts. RIght after that at 6 min you pass 9 riders at under 400 watts and that was brilliant use of right to left cross winds. The bend in the road (not a right angle) to the right doesn't justify the inside line because of the wind dynamic. Last lap- turn two at 13:40 you are trying to move up on the unprotected side with left to right cross wind, hitting big watts you pass one person. Start recognizing that you will have wait to for better conditions to move up or move up on right side, the protected side, practice some gutter ridding LOL. 14:45 a very well documented major double yellow line violation worthy of relegation to DFL has to be called out for yours and the safety of everyone one else, but maybe all in cat 4 race don't recognize it, you gained at least 6 spots by doing so. Then scary indeed was that turn 3 at 14:48 followed by again excellent use of right to left wind to finally lead out your teammate to really good result.

Awesome breakdown but lots of mistakes which impacted them negatively in their strat. Really good legs but if you dont have the technique and teamwork it won't work. Sad to see Justin pull his team mate to the finish but miss it by a few seconds. I wanna see Justin closer to the front more

To move to cat 1 do you just have to win/place events even regardless of physical ability?
@nickdorsett7777
@nickdorsett7777 5 лет назад
You have to place in events to score points. The number of points you earn depends on the size of the field and the categories of the other riders. That's where physical ability comes in, you can't just cherry-pick races to win

The problem is that in Maine there aren't a lot of races or opportunities to practice corners. The guys who are willing to drive to MA and CT will get that experience and get better. The ones not willing, will forever be out cornered.

It's not really apparent in the video, but there's a fairly good size hole in the pavement near the apex of turn 3 which the riders are avoiding.
