Episode 39 - Why You Should Train 3-7 Yards
After training 3-5 yards, we should work on training 3-7 to continue to develop good fundamentals. As a civilian, things CAN happen at greater distances but are more likely to be within 7 yards. This video explains the importance and the mindset behind why it's important to train close.

2 things: I don't think people know how hard it is to shoot at 25 with that accuracy with 1 finger. And switching to the left on the reload and shooting is tough as well. Great job Alston. Learning a lot.

Excellent! 👍 I liked the "sit on the couch and talk trash" remark 😏 I've been shooting since a boy of 8 with my father and my great uncle guiding me. Both were soldiers and lawmen. Both were also veterans of combat, and shootings as an officer. They trained me to draw and shoot from less than 1 ft. to as far as 75m. with a handgun. By the time I went to basic training, I was more than ready. After 3 tours in Vietnam I too became a peace officer, and managed to walk away from 3 shootings during my career. Because of my father's and great uncle's skilled and professional experience in training that I'm still here. Now in my 70s, I still train on my own range, and close quarters drills are a big part of how I train. And fundamentals are at the top of the list. Recently discovered your channel. I was very impressed and immediately subscribed. I'm going back to other videos you've made, and catch myself nodding my head at times thinking "man, this guy knows his stuff". Thought I've been shooting for over 6 decades, I'll be the very first to say I'm still learning. And your channel is an excellent source of knowledge to add to my own. 👍

The Dunning Kruger effect is very real. Most gun fights are within a car length (7)yards, and in, and so-called professionals (police) miss at that range. Handgun triggers are heavier than the gun itself, making it easier to disturb during the trigger press. Shooting is simple but not easy.

Remember guys, the closer the action the less time for reaction. Muscle memory is real and practice at different distances is essential. Check with your sight picture before shooting, and across lanes. Your range won’t thank you for damage to walls etc.

I have annual memberships at 2 indoor ranges and I had to qualify at similar distances with a range officer on a shot timer with speed and accuracy. I'm qualified to practice holster draws and rapid fire drills that many ranges don't allow even for their members. I train predominantly at 3, 5 and 7 years so I did see some new drills and movements that will help me diversify and advance my training. 💪🏾👍🏾

My son and I play battle ship at the range. The target has some sized circles on each ship. We run a magazine each, and check the target. Want to find out how good you aren’t? Put that target at 7 yards. When I’m within an inch of those dime sized dots I feel like I’m doing pretty well. Fundamentals up close, at medium distance, and at 25. Shoot small targets. I’ve learned “Aim small, miss small”. Thank you for reinforcing that.

Your approach, instructional technique, and delivery are above par. I like your approach to convincing and demonstrating why fundamentals at close distances are just as important as when the target is at the far end of the range, I spend 33 years in LE with two thirds of the time as a firearms instructor. For probably 20 of those years, entities where I worked required quarterly qualification course to start at 50 yards. Distance is the most perishable of all shooting skills, especially when someone does not have or has forgotten the fundamentals and eventually the 3-7 yard strings will result in rounds impacting outside the scoring area. I am in the process of transitioning to teaching citizens, and I appreciate your approach to teaching and relating to the student.

100% agree crawl, walk, run. Working law enforcement and being prior military we train as close as 2 meters. When dealing with a person and they pull a weapon at close range you need to know how to get them away and get rounds off immediately. You can never overtrain you can only be over confident and cocky. Nice 25yd shot by the way.
