Why You Should Vacuum Your Mattress

I do a quick demo of why you should vacuum your mattress. We lose millions of dead skin cells and hair daily. I vacuum my mattress about once every couple of weeks to remove dust, dirt and allergens from my mattress. The machine I demo is the Kirby Diamond Edition in hose mode. I removed the bag and installed the dirt meter to show an example of the type of filth we sleep on. The mattress is fairly new, and while not much dust was on the pad, it can build up if not regularly vacuumed. You can use any machine to clean your mattress, but make sure you use straight suction (preferably a hose) if you have a delicate mattress. You could snag or damage your mattress if not careful.

Appreciate the kind words, Kita. Yes, cleaning the mattress at least once a month is a must to remove dust mites and their eggs.

Agreed. I actually just recently vacuumed mine I try to do it as often as possible to get all the nasty stuff off of it. Very good video!

I do my bed every week which is when the bed sheets get changed but I do use the Power Nozzle with the Brush Roll turned on

+Just for the comments and Subscribing I can do that on my mom's mattress, but the other mattresses in the home are delicate.

Great demonstration! I vacuum & flip our mattress once every 2 weeks. My brother is highly asthmatic so vacuuming the mattress was something the asthma clinic told my Mum to do when he was little. It's been a regular job ever since

+sorcerer101567 Thanks man. Yeah, I understand. I started having asthma problems at 22, and have to take two different inhalers. That is a good idea to vacuum and flip them. My Kirby Diamond Edition is probably the most sanitary out of all my machines; reason why it gets the most use. But, I know there are machines out there that filter better. I want at least one that has superior filtration.

I'm not a huge fan of Kirby's to be honest. My Mum had one when I was a kid but I always found it too large and very overpriced. To give them their due, they cope better in American homes with bigger rooms than they do in our smaller houses. My mother in law has an Ultimate G which works wonders on their single story, all carpeted house.
@mattjones7621

That is understandable and true, if you have smaller spaces. The vintage models (500 series- Dual Sanitronic 80) are great for smaller spaces, rugs and floors. Unless you convert them to disposable bags, though, the filtration is bad. They are made to last and you can easily find parts for them. As far as the newer ones go, I think the Diamond Edition is the best one they made. It is the only one with a delicate speed switch and it has come in handy on my rugs.

+lifeofjaykay Glad I was able to help. Yes ma'am; dust mites, their eggs and feces can become trapped in your mattress over time. We also lose millions of dead skin cells and hair during the day. All of that combined filth can have an impact on your health. Keeping it vacuumed every so often helps cut down on allergens that can make you sick.

Great Video. The Diamond Edition is my favorite model of Kirby. I don't have one in my arsenal of vacuums. I do have a heritage 2 though. I grew up with a classic omega. Nice to see other vacuum guys out there.
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 7 лет назад
Yeah, I think it is the best well-rounded of the G Series. I have different types of flooring and area rugs, so that delicate switch comes in handy. The Heritage 2 was probably the best well-rounded Kirby ever made. It was the old style motor but had the filtration needed to battle dust. I love the 500 series- D80 concerning style. If you don't have allergies or asthma, I would recommend one of them; especially if you have floors and rugs.

I agree that its a good idea to vacuum the mattress. I do this every six months and with a Kirby with the brush roll attachment on it. I guess on the next go round I could use the hose. If possible can you do a video with the brush roll attached and see what you get out? Great video.
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 5 лет назад
I would, but the brush roll is too aggressive for my mattress. I tried it a couple of times with both the brush engaged and disengaged, and it picked the material. That is why I use the hose with the utility nozzle when cleaning it. If you have a mattress that is made of a more durable material you can use the brush roll.

good video, I learned about this stuff from a Rainbow demonstration decades ago, learned a lot (like your video) I bought a dirt meter just yesterday to 'test' areas of my home...before and after vacuuming......interesting for sure....but sure pulls up a lot of carpet fiber ( kirby sentria). have you noticed that with your kirby as well?
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 6 лет назад
Not really, concerning the fiber. I have rugs and hard flooring, though, which is the main reason. Lots of dust and hair is what I usually pull up. It's amazing that it appears clean on the surface, but not when you go over it with the Kirby.

I need to ask but even though your royal vacuum has stiffer bristles then your kirby . is it chevron style or oblique style and does it have stiffeners or not
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 5 лет назад
That's a good question. Concerning the Royal: It does have the stiffeners. I would say it is closer to chevron style than oblique. My Kirby Diamond has the oblique style brush. Both are great machines in their own unique way. I rotate them all, but I use my modified Kirby model 519 most of the time. It is a lot lighter and I upgraded it to using a chevron 4 row roller brush and HEPA filtration.

@mattjones7621 4 года назад
I have a mattress protector, but it is mainly for old folks who have bladder issues. It is on my brother's mattress, because my grandmother is living with us for the moment. Whenever I vacuum my mattress, it's just convenient to use the hose with the utility nozzle. I do that about every Friday when I dust my room.

Hi Matt could you please help me with this question. I am restoring a Kirby Legend 2. On the parts list it shows for the front bearing a seal retainer part # 100873A but i don't know if mine had one or if it fell off my workbench and into the black whole...LOL Any can you please tell me if i really need it or not from the looks of it i think it was used for open end bearing but now we use sealed bearings. Thank you for your time and help
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 5 лет назад
Your Kirby Legend 2 should have a sealed front bearing, and there should be a retainer clip that helps hold it in place. If it hasn't wobbled loose when the motor is running, I think you should be fine. The bearings usually fit in the fan case holder pretty snug when they are tapped in. I have opened some machines up and have seen certain parts missing, but they didn't malfunction or anything.

For a laugh, I forgot to plug it in at the beginning, lol.
@vacuumcleanercollectorfixe1499
Maybe you should use a Zipp Brush

+Just for the comments and Subscribing It is too harsh on every mattress in my home but my mom's. I use it in regular nozzle mode on her's, but have to use the utility nozzle on the rest. The very first time we got new mattresses I almost ruined one of them, because the brush roll started to wear out a spot on my younger brother's mattress. I used it in nozzle mode in straight suction and even it picks here and there. The best way that works for me is in hose mode with the utility nozzle.

Did you bought your whole vacuum cleaners used or did you bought some of them brand new?
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 6 лет назад
I bought the Royal brand new; the Kirby Diamond Edition reconditioned; the Kirby 519 used. I keep them all running at peak efficiency by servicing them a few times a year. I tear them apart, clean them and replace anything that is worn out.
@brentcho1275
@brentcho1275 6 лет назад
Where did you get the royal vacuum from?
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 6 лет назад
I bought it in Lebanon, TN at a place called 'Lebanon Vacuum and Sewing Center.' I once had the all-metal attachment set with it, but I sold it later. I didn't need it since the Kirby has so many attachments, and it was taking up space.
