Today, I'm discussing 10 great micro budget feature films I've watched and why I think aspiring filmmakers should be watching more micro budget films.
EDIT: I'm an idiot. Incorrectly said that Jeremy Gardner directed Blue Ruin and Green Room. Jeremy Saulnier directed those. Somehow I merged the Jeremys in my mind. Sorry Jeremys...
EDIT 2: I recently found out that the Blair Witch Project was actually made for $300,000, which doesn't fit on this list. Somehow the numbers have been made to seem smaller than they were by the internet over time. And while the fact that it was shot on film does add a large expense that we don't have to factor in now, the rest of the budget is still well over the $100k mark.
All of these films were made with $100,000 or less. We'll discuss the smart decisions films these filmmakers made in order to execute these stories with little money. Spoiler: Casting, Locations, Genre, and Runtime all play huge roles.

This is great. I’m currently about to produce my first feature film with 2.5k. This really helps give me a sense of scale for these kind of movies

Glad it's helpful! I'm developing another feature of my own this year for about the same budget. It's definitely important to keep your producer hat on from the get-go!

I will definitely try to document the journey when it happens! I let perfectionism get in the way and never got that idea I was working on out into a feature script. Trying to get back on the horse now. I’ve done a few shorts lately that have helped me get out of my head and let go a bit, but it’s a struggle! Good luck with your film! Excited to see that!

Excellent video and a very well-rounded selection of titles. I can't wait to check some of these out. The best thing about micro-budget films is that they're both inspirational and informative and you can learn so many tricks just from watching them

First of all thank you for making this video. You made some excellent points and it was all well thought out. Most of these films I had never heard of so I feel motivated to check them out. I thought for sure "El Mariachi" would have made the list but that's ok, not the end of the world. Honestly I don't understand where all the praise for "Creep" comes from. I watched it twice to see if there was something I missed but found myself bored out of my mind both times. On a positive note the sequel was better in my opinion. Again thanks for the video.

You forgot about inflation. Pi and Blaire Witch are both well over $100k if you factor inflation
@obscurity_films
@obscurity_films 9 месяцев назад
That’s true. I actually have a note in the Description now about Blair Witch, as it was actually produced for about $300,000 in 1999 dollars. So that one's waaayy over. Hard to nail down the real budget on some of these older films. Pi is also over, looked closer at the Wikipedia and it was shot for about $60k but there was an additional $60k for post. The one thing that I think slightly offsets this is the cost of film. Pi shot over 53,000 feet of 16mm film over 23 hours worth of footage. Today all we need is cheap hard drives and memory cards.

@@obscurity_films Blair Witch the film was made for 35k-60k. The finishing of the film did cost more, but that is really not the point, as everyone will not have that option. Same with El Mariachi, it cost 7K to make, but probably over a million in the sound mix for Columbia. So for your conversation, the budgets are the shooting budget, what the film was brought in for. Also on Blair Witch, it is not the 16mm film that cost so much, it is probably renting out the studio to do the editing, and then once the film picked up a distributor there was probably more work done to it. Also the poster above is correct as many of the budget numbers of early films are no longer really valid due to inflation, as no one can make a film as good as King Kong today for 600K. Very good video by the way, and I agree, for folks wanting to make films, look at these micro budget films, though even most of the films you mentioned are way too high. One you missed that was very creative, and doable is The Last Broadcast also I think from 1999.

The Endless totally fits in this list. It was shot on the exact same budget as Resolution ($20,000)
@obscurity_films
@obscurity_films 2 года назад
Oh was it really? Everything about it seems much larger scale and I couldn't find any of the budget info, so I assumed it was a decent amount higher. Also, very cool to see they're directing Moon Knight!
@timsmythfilmsandanimations

On the running time, it is not that over 100 minutes cost more money, it is that with low budget films it is harder to keep the quality up enough to make it any longer. Folks have no problem sitting through a 2 hour film called Star Wars, but they might for the Blair Witch Project, as famous as that even is. So shorter has always been the rule, and it is a good one. Thanks again for the video.

Blair Witch was filmed on celluloid so I assume majority of the budget when to 16mm film stock and development.
@obscurity_films

Actually, interesting you bring this up because I just found out recently that the numbers are WAY OFF and somehow over time the numbers have become deflated. It was actually a much more traditional Hollywood business plan and cost $300,000 in total. Found this out watching the beginning of the "Movie Money Confidential" (which I would not recommend past the opening interview with the lady who wrote the Blair Witch Project business plan).

I think Mark Duplass mentions in an interview that all they spent on creep was 500 dollars for the airbnb/cabin. But I bet they must've spent at least a little bit on food and transportation. Great film though!
