The better you are at something, the longer away from the "body" the focus should be, this is the classic internal vs external focus, Marcus is god at giving feedback staying away from the "internal" feedback most of the time. i m so glad i found this channel, im a golf coach myself, and i learn so much watching him work. Thanks for the inspiration and making me think. Love it!
This is super helpful. I know that when I focus on the ball too much it’s detrimental and that my mind should be “out there” on the target with some plan of what will get the ball there (visualising the shot). But this drill is a brilliant way of developing those mind skills if you don’t do them well naturally. My son has a number of neuro-atypical diagnoses and he is incapable of visualisation - a condition called aphantasia. Most neurological conditions exist as spectrums and visualisation definitely isn’t a strength of mine. This approach to practicing is a great way of developing that sense / skill. I’ve just tried it out and the results were just like this student’s. Thank you, Marcus. The way you develop your approach is a model for every coach of any sport.
Marcus , On the downswing to perform properly , the right leg "knee " moves more out ? As shown with the Red pressure pads ? It seems to set up the drop and pop ?
I've not seen u teach this for ages an it was 1 of the most important parts of freeing up my mind when I 1st saw u talk about it. I was 95% focus an intention on my immediate area an 5% on target, now I'm the other way around its a mind freeing awesome feeling body freeing game changer 🤯👌 Stand behind the ball an look at my start line an target, make a definite decision, focus on that decision and swing to that whilst looking at target to get the feel of the shot, walk into the shot whilst still focusing and looking outwards and allow the body to set itself up, look down to make sure club behind ball an let rip 🏌🏿♂️ If you give yourself a direct intention and trust it the body will move to that intention by the subconscious. If you have dout then the conscious takes over an tried to recorrect which leads to most bad shots in golf.. As you said b4, u have to loose control of the swing to gain control of the ball ❤️
Ok I’ll bite 🙂 I don’t look at the dart or the basketball because they’re already in my hand. But I will look at a hockey puck, a tennis ball, or a football when I hit them. So is it not more accurate to want to create an internal mental representation of the target when you’re hitting it, rather than not looking at the ball at all?
I think that's the point. This student had no concept of creating an internal representation of the target because his mental and visual focus was on the ball. This was a drill to get him reacting to the right intention. Would be a long round if you actually played without looking at the ball 😂
I play tennis to a reasonable level and you definitely need to have a target in your mind’s eye when hitting. Yes, the eye is on the ball at contact (although often the eyes are actually closed at the moment of contact). That’s why you often hit at cones in practice.
Look at the old video "No look shot" might be on Robins channel or Zen golf mechanic... it was a drill where you looked away from the ball or even close your eyes and still produce amazing golf shots! The walk in shot is also a great warm up exorcise
Funny enough and not sure the cause of it, I’m assuming it’s the severe ADD I have lol, the amount of focus I have to use to see my club hit the ball is equal to the brain power of 10 humans lmao. I always thought I was lifting my head and was always told to stop lifting my head. But about a few months ago I finally got a lesson with a higher speed camera that could capture my whole body and it was evident that my eyes were down at the ball the whole time and really the big issue for my swing was my club being way open. Which was surprising to me lol because I still take videos and every-time my eyes were down at the ball. So really my only explanation is my ADD will not allow me to think about anything else even at that moment other then the ball being in the air and seeing it. But this has caused me for a very long time to throw my hands early and hit 10 inches behind the ball it has gotten way better but still not great. Thanks for the coaching tips sir!
